Raiders too. It's a good year for smaller market fan favorites.

Sorry, Cleveland.

The Raiders only had 10 defenders on the field on that last play vs. the Texans.

fwiw Lions were a pretty trendy pick preseason.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago)

They were destined to do well with Stafford healthy and the meanest D-line in the league, but I don't think anyone was anticipating 5-0.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:01 (thirteen years ago)

a lot of people bet on them to win the superbowl.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:17 (thirteen years ago)

a lot of smart gamblers did too, apparently.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:18 (thirteen years ago)

when they opened the line at 100-1 or whatever it moved to 18-1 FAST and there was a lot of action from "sharps" (successful bettors.)

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:19 (thirteen years ago)

Hell, I'd love to see them and the Bills in the Super Bowl, but we're only a third of the way through the season. Lots still to happen.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:25 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i managed to get them at over 7.5 wins for the season, which seemed like a good bet since they were really an 8-8 team last season (got screwed vs. the Bears twice) and could only be better w/ Stafford

If they didnt make that horrible personal foul call against Urlacher, then it's a whole different ballgame. Plus, McNabb has got to be worth at least six points in our favor.

I've not really been that into football this year and I think it is showing in my pick performance:
Last week 8-5, so far this year a mediocre 49-28.

San Francisco at Detroit - Who would have thought a month or so ago that this would be a "marquee" match-up. Sports is weird sometimes and this year's NFL is definitely a change of the guard or at least narrative. I watched a bit of the Niners in the first half when the Cowboys looked good, not when they blew it. Detroit's D-line is pretty serious and the Lions offense was pretty impressive on being able to throw some plays that totally caught the Bears in the wrong place. I'm going Lions at home.
St. Louis at Green Bay - Even with losing Clifton, the GB offense is real scarily potent. I think a big think on why the Pack have been so great in this little run starting last year is that they are not getting the stupid penalties or turnovers that kind of plagued other years.
Carolina at Atlanta - This is a good game and I think kind of a pickem, as Carolina has played everyone tough to not too many wins. Atlanta has to win this one or their season is toast. Falcons it is.
Indianapolis at Cincinnati - Finally got to see the Bengals last week as they were on TV (since they were on the road). Got to say they are not getting pub of the other clubs that have come out of nowhere, but they look pretty good. The defense is healthy and playing like it did a couple years ago. Andy Dalton looks very polished and under any season where you don't have an LT/Marino out of the gate mindblowing start like Newton has had, he would probably be a big story. Bengals SHOULD win, but Indy since the Titan loss has played everyone fairly close. They are definitely a pretty good 0-5 club. Funny thing is if Manning is there, they are 4-1. You know it's true. I'm going Bengals, but I won't be surprised if Indy wins one.
Buffalo at NY Giants - Wow am I really going to take the Bills on the road in the Meadowlands? I still can't believe.
Jacksonville at Pittsburgh - Steelers but this will be closer than you think. Gabbert looked OK last week. Still not sure how JVille lost. Pittsburgh is a wreck, but I still take 'em.
Philadelphia at Washington - Am I really thinking of taking the Redskins? How bad do the Eagles have to finish for Reed to get the axe (6-10 or 4-12...?
Houston at Baltimore - Ravens losing week 2 to the Titans kind of makes me hesitant. Don't care for the Texans either. I guess bmore at home.
Cleveland at Oakland - Raiders I guess...there will be a warrior funeral pyre at half time right?
Dallas at New England - The Pats are pretty much impossible to beat at home. Cowboys could get it done, but they bring the stupid way too much. I'll go Pats and be ticked when the Cowboys somehow win. Either way, you won't want to listen or watch ESPN afterwards.
New Orleans at Tampa Bay - Wow the Bucs got clobbered, kind of blew the shine off their easy schedule wins over the past year or so. I'd believe it being close, but the Saints are a big step above the Bucs who are obviously not yet ready for prime time.
Minnesota at Chicago - I'm going Bears, but their D-line is really banged up and that o-line is a freaking joke. I saw Minnesota play a bit on week 1 and their D looked pretty good. I figured with McNabb and Petersen they should be at least a .500 club. Hasn't turned out this way. Either way, it is an old NFC Central game and really even if one club is great and one is total shite, there are upsets. It happens with these clubs. I'm going Bears and hoping it goes well. The Bears lose and I think they have to win with the Lions and Pack racing away, just to stay in the wildcard race and at 2-4, you could almost call them toast. 6-4 or 7-3 in the last ten might be possible but 8-2 looks damn hard for this club. Bears right now look like at best a .500 club as they don't have the explosiveness on either defense or offense.
Miami at NY Jets - see above and apply the Jets to where you see Bears and put in the Bills and Pats where you see Pack and Lions. Jets should win.

San Francisco at Detroit - team megatron
St. Louis at Green Bay - pack obvs
Carolina at Atlanta - carolina!
Indianapolis at Cincinnati - this game is not on tv here, so I WIN
Buffalo at NY Giants - pink socks
Jacksonville at Pittsburgh - steelers
Philadelphia at Washington - REDSKINS
Houston at Baltimore - ravens
Cleveland at Oakland - raaaaaiders
Dallas at New England - PATS but this could be close
New Orleans at Tampa Bay - saints
Minnesota at Chicago - bears
Miami at NY Jets - jets

They said the same thing last year and they won the division.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Friday, 14 October 2011 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

recap:

1. jets WRs allegedly meet to complain about offensive play calling
2. jets deny this happened
3. mason complains to press and jets ship him out
4. jets deny trading mason because he complained
5. burress claims that the jets did trade mason because he complained
6. holmes, feeling left out, tells the press that their O line is no good

going well.

They said the same thing last year and they won the division.

They were still one of the flukiest division winners I've ever seen (both Lions games should have been L's, they matched up vs. a bunch of 3rd string QBs, and nobody ever got injured), and even then, the O-line didn't look THIS bad. Who knows. Maybe they can patch it together. I hope so b/c I love watching Cutler.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

Oh I don't know, the O-line looked pretty poor last year. Cutler did get sacked 52 times last year. I think he is dishing it low quite a bit more this year which is cutting down on the sacks, but literally in a couple of games he has not had many plays at all where he could actually setup in the pocket and really deliver the ball. Oddly enough, they do seem to be able to expose the aggressive blitzes some right now and have done OK running the ball at points the last couple games. I think just cutting down on the dumb penalties would be a big start. That was like -50 yards of offense or more alone last game with the false starts and holds. I don't know if they would have been better if the Bears' kept Kreutz around, but they might have a bit more continuity and possibly play a bit better.

The banged up d-line is a big thing though as the Bears are a totally different club when the front is getting a big push as that frees up the linebackers to roam and create havok.

I like the move a lot! It was a terrible price to pay, but whatever. When the alternative is starting Kyle Boller ...

polyphonic, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, part of me hopes that Oakland gets to the playoffs (if not the Super Bowl) so CP can feel vindicated in quitting on the stupid Bengals. Small victory, of course, because the Bengals get choice draft picks out of it, but it would make me smile anyway.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know. Palmer hasn't been good since 2006 and has been sitting around the whole season, AFAIK he didn't do any training camp stuff or anything so he could easily be way out of shape. I guess the Raiders only need him to be "okay" but thats a gamble. I can't see how Mike Brown could have even turned down like, a third rounder for him - having him on the team but not playing was only costing him money!

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

I think he was retired, thus not making money.

my bad, I thought that he got paid unless the Bengals released him?

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i did too?

loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

hmmm, looking it up, it looks like they have to keep cap room for him, but I guess he doesn't actually get paid. still hurts the team to have him on, though they're under cap anyway

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah. i seriously wonder how the negotiations went here. did Brown refuse to get just a 1st, knowing the Raiders would overpay? and how the hell is Palmer going to get himself into game shape in just a week? its gonna be a hell of an entertaining week..

― frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:01 (53 minutes ago)

Apparently the price all along was 2 first rounders (which i guess even Hue wasn't willing to pay, since he negotiated the second pick down to a conditional).

This Palmer trade is really one of the most fascinating stories in NFL history to me. 2 years ago, Hue Jackson was just an assistant coach. Now he basically IS the Raiders, and has staked his professional reputation on an insane trade for a 32 year old quarterback with a reconstructed knee and a bad ulnar nerve. He had literally 10 days to step into the power vacuum of Davis dying and he did it with this?

If somehow he's right and the Raiders make it to a Superbowl, he'd basically have the status with the franchise that Davis had back in the 60s. If he's wrong he may never get another HC job.

Raiders DT Tommy Kelly on Carson Palmer trade: "Man, I thought we was gonna get Garrard so you can't be nothing but happy."

lol poor DG.

zombie al davis shambled into room, rolled his eyes back in his head, extracted wadded up papers showing draft picks from his mouth, uncrumpled them, and placed them on brown's desk is how.

yeah, niche-y, that's what i meant (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

you forgot "hasn't been good since he was 27" and "way overpaid"

but you never know, maybe getting out of Cinci is just what the guy needed?

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i am on record stating on the way down that i had "no concerns at all" about beating dallas and i think i pretty much held fast tho it was a frustrating and nerve-wracking game. never seen nfl in person before and it was actually more fun than i thought it would be. great to see all 22 guys and have a better view of the lines, especially run-blocking. crowd was actually pleasant and it was really fun to be noisy and see dallas get called for false starts.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago)

that dallas-new england game was really weird.

Hue also knows more about Carson than almost anyone. Recruited him to college, coached him in Cincy. Palmer's personal offseason trainer is also an "advisor" to the Raiders. But man... Hue is on an island by himself with this move.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

I like the move a lot! It was a terrible price to pay, but whatever. When the alternative is starting Kyle Boller ...

this is actually sort of how i feel about it

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

the alternative is to shrug about this one season and not remortgage your already mortgaged future. also, let's not forget that palmer is terrible now. this is the most essential fact in this whole craziness.

gonna go on record to say this was too crazy even for al davis.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

was really pissed at the dallas playcalling for the last 5 minutes of the quarter, you've got a good QB vs. a bad pass defense, why go run when NE is thinking run so you can give the ball back to the greatest 2-minute QB in the league

It's not just too crazy, it's the wrong kind of crazy. Al loved first round draft picks. Yeah he traded one for Richard Seymour- it was Richard Seymour. And when was the last time he moved heaven and earth to get a QB? He liked to either draft his own QBs or find retreads from other teams.

I disagree about their future being mortgaged btw. A lot was made about them not having picks next year, but they used them on developmental players. Picking Pryor wasn't mortgaging anything, it was just using a draft pick 9 months early.

honestly i think a big part of the raiders trade is if pryor can give them anything. bcuz i'm willing to believe that carson can be adequate -- and remember, this was a competing team with... jason campbell at QB -- for the rest of this year and next year, but he's only a bridge to someone that's gonna be there or 4 or 5 years or whatever. if that person is actually pryor, then this will turn out fine. if it's not, then they're gonna have wasted a lot of picks on a position that's going to be a... wait for it... black hole

oh man, i was like here come the DOLPHINS about a million times and then the name Brian Daboll (last years Browns O-Coordinator) would flash in front of my eyes. Put a drive together and then fizzle with field goals and degradations.

brownie, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:42 (thirteen years ago)

their last good qb was the elderly rich gannon so I don't blame em for piling up some depth and seeing if someone pops. campbell was never going to be more than a game manager

the trade only makes sense as a short term move made to contend for super bowls. Which I guess making the AFC title game counts as, so if that actually happens I guess the trade is a success. But they have to be expecting more than 2 years of play from Palmer. 4 years+ at least.

I have been a defender of Campbell: obviously they won with him, his contract was reasonable etc. But he has done things this season- the pats red zone INT, the fumble this week-- that make me think they'd never really have playoff success with him, merely make the playoffs.

I guess it comes down to whether they should have given up on the season and waited until the offseason to try and acquire a better vet QB with a different king's ransom.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 20 October 2011 05:33 (thirteen years ago)

I feel good about Palmer...but I think most of that good-feeling is relative to the other alternatives that were bandied about, like Garrard and Orton. Yeesh.

It's a huge gamble, but I at least like that it *might* work. I liked not wincing when I heard the news.

My thing is, the team has finally got to a point where they are an actual team that can play 4 quarters. I think they've earned a chance at a 'real' QB. A retired one. With a bung knee.

Props to Campbell though. He helped to make the Raiders a 4th quarter team again, which they hadn't been in, fuck, I can't remember how long. Weird mistakes the last few weeks made me a little uneasy and I agree that maybe he wasn't THE guy, but really feel bad that he had to go out like that because he was about as tough as they come.

Fuckin missed u guys ;_;

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 October 2011 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

would Orton have been worse than Palmer, though? I'm optimistic that Palmer can at least do what Campbell did, but damn did they pay a high price.

rockapads, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

orton has looked dreadful this year, also who knows if denver would've traded him to a division opponent

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 October 2011 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

This is sort of a gut-thing, but Palmer at least feels like a better decision maker. Orton's just a guy who can throw a ball. That's not who I want for this team. I don't just want to fill a hole. And I kinda like Hue's 'go big or go home' attitude.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

Not basing any of that assessment on any actual statistics fyi. Just talking football because YAY I CAN TALK FOOTBALL AGAIN WOOO

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:44 (thirteen years ago)

orton is looking more and more like a product of mcdaniels and not much else

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:44 (thirteen years ago)

Oh and Orton has looked horrible. DNW.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

Broncos would never traded Orton to the Raiders unless they could infect the whole team with lice in doing so. There is some deep seeded hatred in the veins of the Broncos and Chiefs against the Raiders.

earlnash, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

It would be the most amazing revenge ever if Raiders could fashion a Superbowl win around him. That would be a pretty great fuck you to the Broncos. But yes. The donkey-ness pretty much precludes him on principle.
