first win watch:

miami 3/10 - giants look poor but they can function to some degree as a football team so does not look promising for the fins
indy 5/10 - divisional game so theoretically anything can happen. matt hass honeymoon might be over and they used to have a running back
st. louis 0/10 - new orleans could punt on 1st down every possession thru 3 quarters and they would still score the 10 points required to win in the 4th

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yep, Indy is the favorite to get their first win out of that group. They're only 9.5 point dogs.

I feel like Detroit at Denver is the one to watch. I know he's all anyone talks about but I really want to see Tim "The Toolman" Tebow succeed just to watch people's brains explode. If Detroit can't win their season is going to be in total freefall as their second half schedule is brutal.

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

shaun hill and drew stanton are both as good QBs as tebow, and if either had to play they have better weapons, so i can't see any scenario in which detroit doesn't win that game. and their d line will be revved up, so there is a chance tebow ends the day with his pal jesus in heaven.

Meanwhile Brady’s heard all the talk about tight end Rob Gronkowski and his encounter with BiBi Jones over the weekend, and knowing his tight end as well as he does, he’s not exactly surprised.

“No, but I’ve heard,” said Brady when asked about the topic. ”He never ceases to amaze me. I would have guessed there would be pictures of him somehow with his shirt off, posing or something like that. I’m just glad, I’m no longer the one that people are making fun of on my team on a daily basis.

Brady said that a visit with Belichick is probably in the 2nd year player’s future, although considering other things Gronk has done, apparently it’s not exactly the first time he’ll be making one.

“He’s used to that walk into coach’s office now,” said Brady. “He probably knows it’s coming.”

Brady also was asked about the jersey that was with Gronkowski that he apparently keeps for situations like the one that happened over the weekend, and apparently it’s something he was already aware of.

“The Gronkowski travel bag?” quipped Brady. ”The jersey, and the football to throw around at the pool at the Hard Rock. He has more fun than anybody. He doesn’t miss a fun day. Gronk is single, he’s young and he’s making his own decisions. It’s hard for coach … he talks to us every time we head out for an extended vacation about our decision-making. I’m sure he’ll have something to say to Rob. The players will probably be asking more details — the jersey that the girl was wearing or something like that.”

this guy is kind of dumb:

The NFL has made Chris Cooley a millionaire many times over. During the NFL lockout, when he was banned from working with the Washington Redskins' training staff, he could've hired the best physical therapists around to help him with the left knee that was feeling stiff from surgery in January.

Instead, he figured he would handle it himself. He didn't think the knee was that bad.

It was a decision that essentially cost him a season, and maybe his career. The knee didn't recover. He missed almost all of training camp and muddled through five games, unable to run more than 10 yards without pain. He had the knee drained 15 times.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7156235/washington-redskins-chris-cooley-ir-says-casualty-nfl-lockout

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

oh no, cooooooley. i knew he landed on IR again but not the whole story about it, although i was wondering a few weeks ago why he wasn't a little more concerned about losing his job because fred davis is having a v good season. redskins future does not look bright - hightower is done for the season too, and santana moss out for over a month, and then there's that QB issue..

i wouldn't be surprised if the redskins organization was less competent than most at contacting players during the offseason and before the lockout was in place to, you know, make sure they knew how to handle stuff like this?

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Friday, 28 October 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

"In 2010 only 17 percent of kickoffs went for touchbacks. Through the first six weeks of 2011 more than 50 percent (50.1%) of kickoffs have been downed or gone through the back of the end zone. In fact the total number of touchbacks in 2010 (416) was already eclipsed by the 2011 total after just six weeks (452)."

:(

Last week 9-4, Season 67-36

Arizona at Baltimore- The Cards have pretty much gone back to their norm of being just flat terrible. Bmore is a pretender to the crown. Defense is still good but man do they make dumb penalties at bad times. Offense is just not that good. Ravens.
Minnesota at Carolina- This is probably a pretty decent game to watch. It's pretty much pickem'. I guess Carolina at home.
Jacksonville at Houston- Jack Del Rio does know how to put together a defense, but his clubs are always really awkward on offense. You got to go Texans, by pedigree, but it's hard to believe in them as they have always waffled in these situation. Gimme Houston, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jville knocks them out in a fugly game to watch.
Miami at NY Giants- Giants better win considering their schedule is a witch for the next couple months, but they do sometime play down to their competition.
New Orleans at St. Louis- Got to go Saints, even though they have been upset in a couple of games against total dogs in the past 2-3 years.
Indianapolis at Tennessee- Wow this is a matchup between clubs that got their ass kicked hard last week. Indy got whooped more, but they were playing the Saints. I don't know...it's a stretch, but give me the Colts this time. Wow have both of these clubs fell, few years back this was a marquee matchup.
Detroit at Denver- I'm feeling a Lion swoon, especially if Stafford misses games. I can't buy the Broncos either though. Gimme the Lions but I don't feel good about it. I think the hoopla was a bit premature.
Washington at Buffalo- Both of these clubs definitely don't have the shine from week 2 or 3 now. Beck at least statistically didn't seem to play poor last week, though I didn't see the game. I guess take the Bills at home, but this game feels like a pickem contest. It might be a good game to watch.
Cincinnati at Seattle- Seattle is a tough place to play. Bengals D has been solid and Dalton is getting the job done. I'm going Bengals more on hope they do win more than I feel like they will win. Seahawks are not that good or at least they have some serious flaws on offense, but I'd believe they could win this one especially if the Bengals don't protect the ball.
Cleveland at San Francisco- 49ers have been beating the tar out of people, hard not to take them to win. Browns are a quiet 3-3, but when you have wins against the Colts, Dolphins and Seahawks (especially since that last one was fugly) - they don't inspire confidence.
New England at Pittsburgh- Can I just hope for a mean destructive game where both sides are completely decimated by injuries in the end? Other than the Packers, who seem to be channeling 80s SF right now for being totally efficient, the top of the NFL seems to have clubs that while obviously the best in the league, they got serious flaws. NE's defense gives up tons of yards. Pittsburgh is no longer getting the turnovers and their o-line is swiss cheese. This is a pickem, I have no idea who really to go with as either way you are dealing with the forces of evil. I guess Pats.
Dallas at Philadelphia- Another total pickem game with teams with talent and big flaws. I think in total Dallas is better overall, but they play so stupid at points. Eagles have big flaws. Whatever happened to DeSean Jackson? That guy has vanished. I want to go Cowboys, but I figure it's just too hard to go against the Eagles at home. ESPN won't shutup about the game either way.
San Diego at Kansas City- Speaking of clubs that have quietly gone 3-3, how about KC coming back from their first two weeks. I'd imagine Haley has had to go out and find a new dictionary of curses and swearwords from around the world to make that happen. SD last week got Norved. Rivers and that offense is just not cooking. I'm feeling Chiefs for no good reason other than it would make the division race interesting.

from espn

Andy Reid's Philadelphia Eagles teams are 12-0 in games immediately following bye weeks. That's a large enough sample size; the record can't be written off as a fluke or a lucky streak.

as much as i'd like to believe that...

Mordy, Sunday, 30 October 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

i mean he isn't one of those average qbs who plays consistently average. he makes some really superb plays and he makes some really boneheaded plays. i don't know if anyone else works the extremes the way he does. it really wasn't that challenging to understand...

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 30 October 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

I think you could draw shitty teams after your bye week 10/12 years.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

i mean in football 12 games is 75% of an entire season, that's a strong sample size

this game has been interesting. the steelers have clearly played a lot more man press than the patriots were ready for and i wonder how much of that is informed by their missing linebackers? like if they had more healthy starters would they have done the same crap they always do and gotten burned by brady again?

are they even good?

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 30 October 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, they have a great defense - looking like the best MLB pair in the league and a couple free agent pick ups in the secondary that are really paying off. on offense they have one of the best RBs in the league and a top TE, and a QB that for the first time in his career can move the ball a little, and who crucially isn't turning it over.

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

how could that possibly mean something? reid, of every coach in nfl history, somehow has the incredible ability to coach his teams into playing significantly better the game right after the bye, but we don't see any correlation between that feat and other games?

Mordy, Monday, 31 October 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

because you're really good at utilizing that week off................

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

that's for sure a legit skill, but you'd expect many talented coach to have it. why is reid's record so much more impressive (assuming that it is actually statistically significant and not just a small sample size)?

Mordy, Monday, 31 October 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

like what accounts for his superhuman ability to utilize that extra week?

Mordy, Monday, 31 October 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

idk, i think i would probably feel more repressed by that stat but i'd like to think i'd be clear-headed enough to question whether it means anything predictive

― Mordy, Sunday, October 30, 2011 9:24 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark

i don't know! i'm sure whatever it is that he's not rushing to let the entire NFL know what his bye week strategies are

altho an easy guess would be that he's very good at game planning with an entire extra week to devote to a certain team? like how is that not completely plausible?

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

it's also plausible that the fact that he usually coaches an over .500 team + the randomness of post-bye week matchups could mean that 12-0 is within the margin of error.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 31 October 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

i guess it's possible he has some special trick, and i'm very curious to find out one day what it is. it just doesn't make logical sense to me absent whatever that trick is. like, on the face of it, it's more likely that it's a small sample size. otherwise i'd expect utilizing a bye week to correlate with other coaching skills and i'd wonder why reid uniquely has gone 12-0 and not other great coaches that certainly have relatable skills.

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 October 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

Its been a ridiculous season for gambling. I bet the under on the Saints/Rams, figuring a final of 31-3. The Rams are averaging less than 10 points a game!

frogbs, Monday, 31 October 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

the problem with football betting is just how quickly a few small weird events can skew a score (ie, two quick turnovers, and a usually offensive deficient team scores two TDs off of it). unlike say, basketball, where a little spurt by one team may even out down the line (partially why I made a killing betting on b-ball).

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 October 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

AP still number 1 i rushing yards! had a great day as a receiver too.

i think it's funny to watch chris johnson. every year there's some player that jumps up and ppl are like "oh he's the better than AP" then watch where he is next year...AP is always right there contending in the top 5 for rushing year after year, he is the fucking greatest

a good step for Ponder, he has some stuff to work on but I'm feeling optimistic

was fun to really see Cam play a full game...dude is going to be fucking amazing, i mean p much amazing as is, but yeah with a couple more seasons, wow.

yeah, the fact that the Panthers "only" have a -20 point differential to this point despite being completely awful on defense (last year, they were -212) is really a reflection on how good Cam's been this far.

AP is kinda tomlinson 2.0 ain't he

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

I watched LDT a lot and honestly AP is better.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

As a runner, I mean. LDT was great in the passing game.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

AP is just as fast but MUCH stronger than Tomlinson was. Tomlinson didn't break a lot of tackles.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

i watched LDT a lot and i probably have only seen ten or so games with peterson and based on that small sample size, he's a little fluky in comparison. I've seen monster games and i've seen games where he's made 100 yards seem difficult as hell to achieve. again, i think this is more a matter of not seeing him play enough (lol east coast)

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

Peterson doesn't seem like he's even having that good of a year this year but yet he's on pace for 1600 yards.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

I'm probably not giving LDT enough credit, looking back at all the yards he piled up. But A Pete is so much more upright and muscular. He's got that Dickerson upright style, but he sheds blockers like a Jamal Lewis or somefin.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

kevin otm re o line worries but having vick as a potential scramble option is undoubtedly giving him a leg up that AP ain't got

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

"We just wanted to make him be a quarterback," said Houston, who revealed the defensive game plan was based on the Lions' steadfast belief that Tebow was incapable of moving the Broncos to a score by completing six consecutive passes in any drive. "We had somebody take away his legs and made him use his arm."
