we will ride into week eleven on a two-game winning streak.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

lots of interesting games this week - NE vs NYJ for control of the AFC East, Indy with a chance at their first win, home vs. Jax, Tebow with a chance at another win vs KC (which would put them within a game of the lead, holy shit), Dallas vs. Buffalo (both teams need a win), Giants vs. SF (New York could definitely pad its lead), and best of all, Detroit vs Chicago which likely will have huge playoff implications

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

the only thing in NE's favour vs NYJ is that it seems so obvious that the jets will win

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

also: hooray thursday night football

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

how great would NYJ be if they had someone like Cam Newton? they seem so insane everywhere but at QB

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

well, their pass rush isn't much to talk about, their o line is still suspect and in tandem with that their running game is super inconsistent. they have one WR who isn't exactly reliable and a one dimensional pass catching TE who is overrated. their team basically rest on run stuffing big guys and a great group of LBs and DBs that rex uses extremely well. and when david harris wasn't showing up at the start of the season they weren't really doing anything.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

Thursday:
Oakland at San Diego- Chargers. Raiders are in disarray, I fell. plus no mcfadden. :(

Houston at Tampa Bay - Texans. I believe in the Texans!
Washington at Miami - Dolphins.
Jacksonville at Indianapolis - Jaguars big.
Denver at Kansas City - Chiefs big.
Buffalo at Dallas - Cowboys!
New Orleans at Atlanta - Saints
St. Louis at Cleveland - Rams.
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati - Bengals.

Afternoon games:
Baltimore at Seattle - Ravens
NY Giants at San Francisco - 49ers
Detroit at Chicago - Lions.

Night game:
New England at NY Jets - Patriots

Monday:
Minnesota at Green Bay - Packers. Vikings beat the spread.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

last week 7-7 (and I don't mind as I picked against the Bears and Bengals and they both won).
season 83-47

Oakland at San Diego- Who knows. Both of these clubs are mistake prone as you get. I guess the Chargers at home.
Arizona at Philadelphia- Philly should win.
Tennessee at Carolina- Probably a decent game. I guess go with Camolina off the bye at home.
Houston at Tampa Bay- Eh, I guess Texans, but I hate picking either of these clubs.
Washington at Miami- Miami is definitely playing better, but I don't think they have won a home game since Wannstedt was coach. Washington's brief flicker of being competent has passed. I guess give me the Fish at home.
Jacksonville at Indianapolis- Wow... I'm taking Indy, no good reason but figure they are going to "eventually" play better like in 2012 or something.
Denver at Kansas City- This game has intrigue for a couple of clubs that kind of blow. Give me the fxxxxx Chiefs for my bxxxx Todd Haley.
Buffalo at Dallas- This is kind of hard to pick. Eh, go with Dallas I guess. Still hard to buy the Bills on the road yet.
New Orleans at Atlanta- Saints need to win this one.
St. Louis at Cleveland- Browns?!? Maybe...
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati- I'm going Steelers and hoping to be proven wrong. Bengals win this one, people will start to believe.
Baltimore at Seattle- Ravens but knowing that group, I'd buy it if they went into Seattle and took a big duker.
NY Giants at San Francisco- I guess Giants, but this should be a real interesting game.
Detroit at Chicago- I'm going Bears, but this game is a pickem.
New England at NY Jets- This is another hard call, I'm going Pats but hope I'm wrong.
Minnesota at Green Bay- Packers

earlnash, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

That Raiders-Chargers game is so huge. Raiders win that game, Hue looks legit again and they probably win the division. If they lose I could see Hue Jackson being fired in a year.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:50 (thirteen years ago)

funny thing about the Raiders is that right now the Carson Palmer trade is like the 10th craziest thing Hue has done.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know why I was so all-in on Hue Jackson before but the last few weeks have given me pause.

He clearly has too much power at the moment.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

benching heyward-bey for housh in housh's very first game is absolutely crazy. And essentially not playing Kevin Boss because his blocking isn't good enough? Isn't Boss unquestionably one of the best blocking TEs?

In a way it doesn't matter because in the last game the issues were all defensive. But I have to think introducing all this chaos has something to do with it.

Dude is a great offensive play caller though.

i wonder if the o line hate mccoy, because a recurring theme there is that they are not doing shit to block for him.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

altho let's not put it all on the o line itself, i have never seen a back sidestep out of the way of a bullrusher like a matador before, like on that third play

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

So what do we say if the Bears defeat the Lions? Are both wildcards likely to come out of the NFC North, or are the Lions going to struggle?

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

lions still have to play gb twice right? altho unless the pack is going for an undefeated season the week 17 game might mean nothing to gb. i would say this game will mean a lot w/r/t the rest of detroits season yes. what is the deal w/ jahvid best btw?

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

they have the Saints and Chargers too. also I wouldn't sleep on the Panthers. i'm guessing that whoever wins this game is almost definitely a wildcard, especially given the softness of the Bears upcoming schedule (4 games in a row vs. awful teams)

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

all I can say is that a Bears/Packers NFCCG in Lambeau would be so incredible

i wonder if the o line hate mccoy, because a recurring theme there is that they are not doing shit to block for him.

― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 14:20 (8 hours ago)

on so many plays they seem to have ok protection but mccoy can't make downfield reads/throws and just surrenders the sack

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

oh my god the play where mccoy just straight up loses the ball....

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

Don't kill the messenger, but looking at things more than seeing them play, I have to wonder if the Browns are probably having to rely on Colt McCoy more than he is ready to deliver especially with that running game and receiver setup. Looking it up, Cleveland is second from the bottom in the NFL in rushing and their top receivers are Ben Watson and Josh Cribbs; a vet TE and a kick returner.

Last year they could run the ball a bit and couldn't throw a lick, this year the ground game is gone daddy gone.

I don't doubt that McCoy is probably holding the ball too much trying to make something happen, but hopefully he won't get pounded into hamburger like Tim Couch did along with the fans making him take the sins of being the QB of a shite team, which was definitely doled upon Couch.

They are 3-5 and probably lost to 5 teams that are better than them or at least are .500 or greater clubs. Look up they could be 5-5 going into play Cincy again.

I feel like it's been weeks since I watched a whole day of football games, I'm slackin. I don't think the Raiders will beat the Chargers this week, but I can't bring myself to pick the Chargers regardless. My only vain hope is that the Raiders are sufficiently humiliated by the Broncos loss to cream the Chargers. I can dream.

yeah I felt sick picking the chargers. Raiders have so many injuries on top of everything else. I definitely think they're the more desperate team, which is what I'm pinning my hopes on.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 10 November 2011 08:23 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

btw I don't think "what team was more embarrassed" is really a good method for picking football games, but if anyone needs a bounceback, its Kansas City

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

just so you guys know, the original title was a reference to Flacco's final TD drive against the Steelers, I agree it sounds a lot more disgusting now given recent events

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

You people are fucking high by picking the Lions over the Bears unanimously. Youve got to be kidding me. This is as close to a lock as ive seen this year. Bears.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

I'm curious what the Bears need to do here to get respect.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

i think they're pretty respected. they already lost to the lions so idk why you're acting so aggrieved.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

tbh i just never think the bears look very good when they win. but as i said on sunday i think that was the best overall game i've seen them play in ages.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Well, the Lions have a good pass rush, and the Bears, ahem

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

yea also bears = short prep wk; lions = off a bye ~ idk i think i bears fan shd hope for bad weather on sunday

johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

*a* bears fan

johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

that said, i do agree that the Bears have been pretty massively underrated and will almost definitely get a wild card should they win on Sunday. obviously its well known how well they ran last year and it seems thats all their run was known for - "yeah but they faced many 3rd string QBs", or "yeah but nobody ever got hurt", or "yeah but they probably should have lost both Detroit games", or "yeah but they got to face the worst playoff team in the history of the NFL" - all those things true, but what could they do? win 12 or 13? they were really one drive away from the Super Bowl, and that was with their 3rd string QB! hard to say they wouldn't be a playoff team had they not gotten some breaks (in Week 1, they could have scored another TD after that non-catch catch anyway), harder to say "well they wouldn't have beaten the Eagles" or whatever

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

also Cutler looks better this year than I've ever seen him, so despite the team's flaws he will probably seem them in this thing

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

i think their win last week p much locked up the wild card for them, even if they lose this week - the rest of the nfc is pretty poor

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

well they do face the "murderer's row" of Oakland, KC, Denver, and Seattle in weeks 12-15
that said, if they lose to Detroit, then the Lions would have the tiebreaker, and if da Bears finish 10-6, I can see both Atlanta and NO finishing with 11+

frogbs, Thursday, 10 November 2011 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

Well it still could be for the Bengals if by fluke the Raiders ended up in an AFC title game and they draft good.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 11 November 2011 03:54 (thirteen years ago)

http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/11/02/andy-actually-is-just-fine-for-the-red-rifle/

“It’s all right,” he said Wednesday on “NFL Total Access.” “It seems like everybody is going to find a nickname with ‘red’ or something for my hair. So, the ‘Red Rifle’ is all right.”

Just all right. OK, what does he want to be called?

“Andy,” Dalton responded. “Andy works. It’s just Andy.”

I thought this quote was really cool, it's better than "Joe Means Joe".

If the Bengals somehow beat the Steelers, I think "It's Just Andy" should be next weeks title.

earlnash, Friday, 11 November 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

As soon as I saw that quote, I started to think of this guy being the QB of the Bengals, albeit with red hair.

that 132 yard rush game was a funny one. pats kept running the same stretch play to the left and for some reason the jets couldn't or wouldn't adjust to it, but they have already shut it down tonight.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

I thought that was pretty clear PI on the gronk pass

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

Belichick needs to let someone else start drafting RBs for him.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

they don't have any RBs who look like #1 RBs from a physical standpoint -- they maybe should've drafted ingram like everyone said

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

idk ridley seems like a good pick! there are other positions where drafting help would be much more appreciated.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

ridley looks promising, and we haven't even seen vereen yet. it's hard tho, this is a pass block o line. neither solder or vollmer looks like a run blocker at RT

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

there's the other RB shane vereen they drafted - injured for part of training camp and hasn't made it on the field iirc

pats keep passing on RBs with great measurables for whatever reason. Why not pick DeMarco Murray? Taiwan Jones?

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

that third down throw seemed like a real slow read on branch coming open. it looks more mental than physical. his judgment is off.

i mean, i know one can affect the other, but i dunno.

and has mark ingram done anything interesting in nola? would be news to me.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

ingram isn't having a great year but i think a lot of that is a function of the saints offense

murray is really good but he also could never ever stay healthy at oklahoma, it's only a matter of time before he starts missing every fourth game

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

boston globe:

Patriots safety Patrick Chung approached the podium after the game yesterday in a state of relaxation. The second-year player from Oregon had already keyed a 41-14 beat-down of the Dolphins, even adding an exclamation point at the end.

He blocked a punt that led to a BenJarvus Green-Ellis touchdown. He blocked a field-goal attempt that led to Kyle Arrington’s scoop and score. Oh, and he ended it with a 51-yard pick-6. Not bad.

How did he feel at the end?

Well, he channeled the movie Bad Boys II, saying like Martin Lawrence’s character, “Woo-sa…”

“It’s just relax,” Chung said, laughing. “Don’t get too hyped. Just relax. Woo-sa.”

i'm p sure that you care way too much about ppl picking the lions and no one was making a very vehement argument about detroit winning that game

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

also, i wouldn't get too boastful, if i were you. it's a team coached by lovie smith and quarterbacked by jay cutler, disappointment is in your future.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

cutler is probably top ten QB right now though. he scrambles well, has a huge arm, is very tough, and seems to have put the struggles of the last few years behind him. i fear that "CUTLAAAAH" is all but dead. it nearly came back when he tried to spike the ball and it almost got picked off. either way, this is a team that made it to a Super Bowl with Grossman, so I can believe that they may be able to win one with Cutler, someone's gonna have to beat GB though

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

anyway, can I just express here how much I really dislike Peter King? his column mentioned that a stathead had figured out that the Falcons had a 5% greater chance of winning if they went for it on 4th. then he writes not once but TWICE about how he hated the call, even listing the coach as the "goat of the week", you know, even though he writes in HIS OWN COLUMN that you win the game more often if you go for it.

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

that was a pretty fucking dumb call imo

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

i understand that it gives you a 5% better chance of winning the game, but it also gives you a 100% chance of losing the game if you don't get it, and that's what happened

they had already stopped new orleans once in OT and kasay doesn't really look anywhere close to automatic outside of 40 yards. they should've punted.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

not at all, it was not as good as Belichick's 4th and 2 call but was definitely better than punting

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

also they called an idiotic play -- the whole thing was dumb

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

if you're gonna make that decision, don't do the one thing that everyone in the entire stadium expects you to do

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think that 5% is worth the 100% chance that you lose

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

that's not really a huge boost to your chance of winning the game

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure you're understanding the stat, that 5% extra you get factors in the chance that you lose should you fail - it's not like their chances of winning only go up 5% if they convert, I think it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 25%. plus the Saints are a very good team to do this against as they have given up a very high % of short yardage defensive situations

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

well in any event, i don't think the 25% was worth it either -- also it was an absurdly bad play call, considering that they lost 3 yards

the belichick call was much more defensible considering the players on both teams, altho that also featured an idiotic play call iirc

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

well in any event, i don't think the 25% was worth it either -- also it was an absurdly bad play call, considering that they lost 3 yards

the numbers disagree with you, especially since the Saints are still an elite offense, and it's not like a 3 and out would win you the game, you'd be in the same situation you were in if you had just converted the 4th

i do agree with the second part of that statement though

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

i agreed with the call at the time but the play was hopeless. surely every team has to have a 4th and inches play they can depend on. the QB extends his arms he's almost at scrimmage, you can't push him forward a foot more?

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

i hope cutlol and the bears keep up this form. they might be the only nfc team that can take down GBP.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

i think that's a call that you make if you're like 15 or 20 yards out of field goal range... not 40 or 50. or if like in the pats game the conversion literally wins you the game.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

i'm being more harsh on the decision that necessary because i think it's hard to extricate it from the decision to hopelessly plunge michael turned right up the middle, but i still disagree w/ it

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

Niners don't meet GB this year, huh?

Also, can I just say...hello good Niners team!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

I think its fine in both situations. In general i think that people just hate there being so much variance in one play. the problem is everyone is looking at this as "what would I do if I were the Falcons coach", not "what would I WANT the Falcons to do if I were on the Saints". I definitely know if I'm a Saints fan that I want the Falcons to punt there, especially since NO is usually terrible in those situations, and hadn't stuffed a short run all game

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

i was kind of surprised the niners scored so much vs the giants, particularly with the gore situation, but clearly their defense were a big part of that, and rodgers isn't going to help them out like eli did. but alex smith was playing like a real QB in there. insanity.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

they only scored 2 tds and 1 was a ~15 yd 1 play drive off eli's pick so

johnny crunch, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

i'm still v skeptical of the niners ability to win a playoff game

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

yeah there's so much surprise that the 49ers are doing well w/ Alex Smith when it really has little to do with him - he's playing better but more than that they're not forcing him outside of his comfort zone so much and the defense seems way, way better

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

well, i figured that the niners would come undone the first time alex smith had to actually lead the offense, but he threw for 242y against a decent defense.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2011/11/schaub-has-significant-foot-injury-leinart-to-start-at-jax/

All the good news over the Texans’ 7-3 start turned bad today when they found out quarterback Matt Schaub has suffered a “significant foot injury,” according to coach Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak said Schaub will wear a boot on his ankle and then travel around the country next week seeing specialists in Indianapolis and Charlotte to determine whether he can play again this season.

Kubiak said Matt Leinart will start at Jacksonville when the Texans return from their open date.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

So excited about the new Matt Leinart era!!

polyphonic, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

They'd be better off just snapping directly to Foster or Tate.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 November 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I can't imagine this'll hurt them too much as long as Leinert is remotely competent

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago)

i mean they have the bye next week while Tennesee plays Atlanta, then get Jacksonville, so if it's only a 2-3 week injury they'll still be in good shape, didn't know it could be "season-ending"

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

I think Leinart is one of the best backup QBs in the league, very interested to see what will happen.

tough to talk about the best backup qb's, when there is a significant shortage of decent STARTING qb's. That said, I think Houston's fucked.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

To make the playoffs? Schaub is a good middle-of-the-pack QB on a team thats mostly based on running the ball. The Texans have a two-game lead on the Hasselbeck-led Titans and 3 games on Jacksonville. I'm sure Matt Leinert can get them to the playoffs.

Lovie Smith is fine as a coach. Lovie needs to have the kill switch on the pass button for Martz on offense, but the guy knows what he is doing on the defensive side of the ball.

Jay Cutler is the best QB the Bears have had pretty much forever. He's an oddball and looks a dude people want to smoke in the face, but there is no way they do what they do last year and this year with their usual meatball QB.

The Bears o-line keeps it together and it might, as I think the shakeup they had with the short pre-season could have added to the instability - they will do o.k. Big thing is keeping the WR healthy especially Hester, who while not a great receiver, clubs have to respect him and Knox's speed. Getting Earl Bennett back will help, as he has good hands and is faster than Dane Sanzenbacher (sp?).

The defense is there. They are big and deep up front. Keeping Peppers healthy is a big thing. He causes teams to have to leave Briggs and Urlacher free to roam and create havoc.

Amobi Okoye has played really well for the Bears rotating in and out, where he was a bust with the Texans. I dug that guy at Louisville and Okoye is still only 24 years old, yet in his fifth season. That's still kind of crazy. Good pickup for the Bears.

Steve Fuller- decent backup QB, won a playoff game and if hadn't gotten hurt after Jimmy Mac in 86, they might have had another shot at the Superbowl.

Mike Tomczak- much maligned, but really better than many of these clowns that followed. He hung around the NFL for a long time.
Doug Flutie- First start was a playoff game against the 49ers as a rookie. The Bears gave up on him after that embarrassment and in hind sight was mistake, as Flutie did eventually prove he could play in the NFL.

Jim Harbaugh- Harbaugh was kind of a scapegoat as he became the starter as the great Bears teams were in apogee with Payton gone and that good offensive line starting to fall apart. Ditka really screwed him big time pulling that yanking stunt in Minnesota and the fans turned on him big time. In hindsight, he was WAY freakin better than most of these bozos and could have been a solid for a lot longer. His scrambling ability bailed out a their O-line a bunch. The only game I ever saw in person was the Vikings versus the Bears like the weekend that Jordan retired for the first time (so probably 92?) and they sacked him like 7 times and hit him a dozen more. The line was so porous and yet every Bear fan listening to talk radio driving out talked about how much Harbaugh was to blame for the loss, which was complete insanity.

Peter Tom Willis- He was hyped up for about a half a year after he was drafted, I think because of the three name thing and because he had that Jesse Palmer thing that he kind of looked like a QB. He was also one of many Florida State QBs that put up huge numbers in college and not do squat in the pros.

Will Furrer- Don't even remember the dude.

Erik Kramer- He actually was pretty decent when healthy. He had one good season with the Bears.

Steve Walsh- See Peter Tom Willis and insert Miami of Florida where it says Florida State.

Dave Kreig- This guy was a pretty good QB for a long time, not heralded as he played in Seattle. He played for the Bears late in his career and had a few decent games on very middling Bears clubs. I think he was there in the Wannstadt 7-9 into infinity years.

Rick Mirer- The guy had a decent rookie year at Seattle then turned to suck. The Bears cannot help but get rooked on Notre Dame guys, but hey Mirer kept getting a job for ten years or more.

Steve Stenstrom & Moses Moreno- Don't remember, I didn't watch as much football for a couple of years as I used to have to work a bunch of Sundays at a restaurant.

Shane Matthews- See Steve Walsh, insert Florida in place of 'The U'.

Cade McNown- Flush that #1 down the toilet. He looked cool throwing from the left side though.

Jim Miller- One of my favorites, as the dude was a total meatball. His press conference after he got busted for steroids was hilarious. He was decent, but couldn't stay healthy after having the one OK year.

Chris Chandler- Chandler was a decent QB that could never stay healthy. When he could play, he did alright and put up some results like in Atlanta. The guy played in the NFL forever and ended up with the Bears at the end of his career.

Henry Burris- This dude was terrible. He was one of the worse ones, even more so then Krenzel. That season the Bears went through everyone and a bucket playing QB and I don't think that Burris guy could of started at Illinois, let alone the Bears. Burris started either a Monday night or Sunday night game and it was one of the most freaking ugly games a QB could have.

Kordell Stewart- The guy had some talent and maybe if just left as a 'slash' player, he might have had more success. He took the brunt of the Steelers long time failures in the playoffs, some much deserved. It wasn't a terrible idea giving him a shot, but I think the failure seemed to kind of break him a bit. When he first started though, he was an exciting player for a season or two.

Rex Grossman- In the end, see Shane Matthews but give him a bunch more starts.

Jonathan Quinn- Another guy that got a shot in lost season. He didn't have much.

Craig Krenzel- Dude gave it the old college try, but he just didn't have the chops. I kind of liked the guy, but he didn't have much of an arm.

Chad Hutchinson- This is a backup that got hyped, a signing for the Bears a bit like Steve Walsh, who started as a backup with the Cowboys. He had some big ass teeth.

Kyle Orton- I like the guy and there have been some decent QBs to come out of Purdue, so I hope for the best.

Brian Griese- Dude was following Elway, his dad is a Hall of Fame QB and he ended up a QB for the Bears -- i.e. he was screwed from jump street.

― earlnash, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 9:17 PM (2 years ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Jeff Blake is one of my favorite of the more obscure Bears QBs. That dude had a cannon of the arm and a couple of decent years with the Bengals. If he would have ended up with a better club early in his career, things might have been different.

Vince Evans- The guy had a really good arm and started a bit before Jimmy Mac. He hung around the NFL for a long time afterwards.

Bob Avellini- The dude would run for more yards than pass some games. Payton always got more running the ball for more yards than Avellini would thrown.

Mike Phipps - Dude was a big time first round draft bust that ended up with the Bears for a while before Jimmy Mac.

I got to say I think part of it is that they are a club I just haven't seen play in a while. I saw Fitzpatrick play a few games when he got starts after Palmer got hurt a couple years back and to be honest, I'm not surprised he has done Ok. Fitzpatrick started kind of shaky, but he got pretty decent by the end of his run as a starter in Cincy.

That said, I'm going to be 15-15 in the last couple of weeks, so I am definitely not doing so hot on the picks of late. Then again some of these clubs are just wacky like Philly and B-more and SD and Indy, who I keep giving the benefit of the doubt and getting burned. There is no way Indy brings back Caldwell, is there? How can you do so?
