"Check out 91," says Fox, pointing toward Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali. "He's a great rusher, but look how he has to play. He can't even rush. He's just sitting there waiting. He's reading the option.
"What he does against conventional teams is rush the passer. Well, we don't have a passer. We have a runner. Not to say he can't pass at all, but we're recognizing his strengths."

the nfl has long been this bastion of fitting players into molds as opposed to molding a team/scheme around your players, so i think any player -- like mike vick or vince young or steve young before him -- that forces or allows nfl teams to be more creative is a good thiing for the league and for the fans and i hope tebow takes a ton of wildcat snaps next year and is successful with them

john fox being 'more creative' just means hes going 'oh jesus fucking christ how do i win a game with tim tebow' and comes up with a gameplan that minimizes the chance for disaster. in 06 foxy coached a panthers team that won a game where they only attempted 7 passes - out of necessity. it was not a successful season for them. the broncos are doing what every team with a shitty QB does; cordoning off huge chunks of the playbook because their guy can't run most of it with any efficacy. so really tons of teams in the league DO mold their scheme to their players, it's just that when you're gameplanning around minimizing the damage your weakest link can do, it means your team's a dumpster fire.
its really about talent, or lack of it. vince young doesnt have nfl talent, neither does tebow. all the boundless creativity in the world can't disguise that fact forever, when other teams can see it on tape

also, steve young didn't break any molds, he was slowly massaged into a system over time by some of the greatest QB coaches who ever lived. he was also a really comfortable pocket QB in his best seasons - he had some huge runs, but he mostly lived and died in the pocket. he had a wide variety of elite NFL skills
― The sham nation of Israel should be destroyed. (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:15 (thirteen years ago)
Tebow is an elite athlete. He's just not good at throwing footballs.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

i think the conventional wisdom on tebow is right, he appears terrible at throwing to a spot with his receivers, but gifted at anticipating space in his runs. some kind of spatial perception issue or something.

How many good QBs are there really in the NFL at any one time? I don't know if running a spread option in the NFL will work, but at one point, the short passing west coast offense was considered 'different'. I think the whole think with Tebow and running this kind of offense has some pros and cons, but I think you would have to do the following.
1. Team is built around defense & ball control.2. You build your roster to run this kind of offense.3. Your backup Qbs are in that mold - so if you got Tebow, you go and get Tavaris Jackson or someone who can "RUN" the offense. You don't keep Bernie Kosar immobile types as backups.4. You carry 3 Qbs at all times - to not just waste the draft pick you use the 3rd Qb possibly like say Brad Smith. They are going to get hurt, so you build depth at Qb - perhaps even using some oddball formations that 2 Qbs are in the game like UK would do with Randall Cobb (who was a Qb in highschool and originally recruited as one.)5. Outside your rb, you spend your cash on your O & D-lines. Really in a way, you can build a beastly club going that way, as those cats get paid less than your flashy wideouts etc. IE you get more good players for the same cash.6. You need to be good on special teams and it would probably be good to have a total burner returner - that you could at least use on offense to spread the field a bit.
Would it work? Eh, I don't know. Ultimately there is only a handful of guys that can run this high powered passing game and the rest of the teams are shlubs who just can't compete. It has been shown though if you can keep the big QB off the field by controlling the clock and minimize on defense that is at least a game plan that can work.
I think the spread option is less hard on a Qb compared to the wishbone.
Eh...screw it, give it a shot. I think it could work to a degree, especially if the club has the first pieces and the Qb and maybe the WR skills guys are elusive to acquire.

― frogbs, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 20:57 (thirteen years ago)
this is what happens when you give a jackass like skip bayless a public forum. he thinks favre should still be qb at green bay. the best chance houston has now is to not do anything stupid, ie the opposite of this. leinart is more or less exactly what they need, a fairly reliable short term option who won't grab any headlines good or bad, ie the opposite of favre.

i dunno - the fact that Lienart was cut from Arizona makes me really iffy on him, though I suspect a lot of it has to do with Weisenhunt not being able to develop QB's AT ALL and AZ running the same plays with Lienart that they would with Warner

i did a good amount of head nodding through this, the wisenhunt stuff is certainly otm. but there is no mention of leinart's most important feature, which is that he notoriously has never put the effort in since leaving college. i don't think he is a sleeping giant, but he is a guy who can actually throw the ball and who will probably not throw more ints than TDs, and sometimes that's all you need.

it would be so badass if they did the thing the Colts did and benched Rodgers for the last two games to "preserve him" and finished 16-0 anyway since Flynn is that damn good. probably won't happen b/c there's a chance the Pack won't even get the #1 seed, as the 49ers have 5 of their 7 remaining games vs. the NFC West and will finish with no less than 13 wins

Last week 8-8, season record 91-55
NY Jets at Denver- Jets are just not the same team on defense this year, but they are playing against pretty much a single wing offense. I'll take the Jets, but I kind of hope Denver wins.Tampa Bay at Green Bay- Packers but the last time Tampa got their clock cleaned they somehow came back the next week and knocked off the Saints. I don't think the Pack is the Saints though.Carolina at Detroit- I'd say the Lions lick their wounds curse at the world and bounce back at home with a win.Jacksonville at Cleveland- Boyo I am glad this one is not on TV around here. I guess Browns (even though I have picked them wrong a couple times already this year). Oakland at Minnesota- Oaktown should win, but I would not doubt they would play stupid with the penalties and turnovers and make it a game. Buffalo at Miami- I'm feeling Dolphins, they seem 'improved'. Their d isn't that bad.Dallas at Washington- Boy no one really likes getting a job in DC, it pays good, but it always turns to crap. Dallas should win easy, but saying that is like counting on your drunken college buddy to do the right thing.Cincinnati at Baltimore- I'm going Bengals as I just can't get over the fact that B-more beats the Steelers twice and then loses to Jacksonville and Seattle. Ravens can play just as dumb as the Raiders and Cowboys. Arizona at San Francisco- 49ers should smack the Cards around. Seattle at St. Louis- Eh who knows...I guess Seattle in that their club kinda sucks and their fans are still into it. I kinda like Tavaris Jackson from the little bit I have seen him play. He's not great at all, but the guy to me seems to be a player that really tries to maximize what he's got. The guy throws some dumb picks though.Tennessee at Atlanta- These two clubs are pretty much Dr. Jeckle/Mr. Hyde this year. They have both won a couple of good games and lost a couple where you just can't figure. I guess Falcons at home?!? Sure.San Diego at Chicago- I'm going Bears, but I am a total homer. Knowing my luck, this will probably be the week that Rivers and Co. figure it out. They seem to kick in once everybody starts talking about firing someone.Philadelphia at NY Giants- Giants are pretty good, the Eagles are not. I'll take NY, but this is a rivalry game, so weird things 'can' happen. I'd kind of liked to sat down and watched that whole NYG/49ers game. It was pretty good game from what I saw.Kansas City at New England- NE should beat them handily.

On the impending return of Matt Leinert, I think it will be interesting either way. Not everyone gets a second chance getting the wheels of a playoff bound club. Jim Plunkett was a total first round bust that came out of the scrap heap to win two Superbowls in this situation.
It seems like Leinert pretty much believed his hype and stardom from USC would translate into the NFL and the way it was played out, he didn't work at it. Getting dumped by your head coach like what happened in Arizona was pretty ugly. It will be an interesting story to see if he can get the job done.
High side in this situation would be Plunkett. Tommy Maddox totally came out of nowhere to have a nice small run with the Steelers and that guy was out of football.

you can just never tell. NE will stop the run first and tho i haven't seen much of battle i don't think there is all that much to stop. it all swings on palko because they will need him to make throws. maybe he is great and they win. probably he is average but if he has a cool head there's no reason why it shouldn't be at least close. if he starts losing it and throws multiple picks it will be gory. BB and TB have both made mention of how good the KC defense is at forcing turnovers, so maybe it'll be a super conservative approach from NE.

Some Denver Broncos fans are customizing their #15 jerseys with the name "Jesus" on the back. The jersey, currently worn by Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow(notes), has caused quite a stir. Maybe it is fitting? Tebow is often crucified for no good reason. What has he done to deserve this?
To my knowledge, Tebow has never killed dogs, wielded unlicensed handguns or cursed at a fan. All he has done is tried his best to play a position that poses great challenges for him. Tebow has a very strong work ethic. He knows he has work to do so he works hard. And people criticize him?
It is no secret that Tebow is a devout Christian. He draws strength from his strong faith and sometimes expresses it on the football field. This expression has been coined "Tebowing" and people mock him for it. [video: Tebowing For Dummies]
You might thing his fellow athletes might empathize with him. But his own peers ridicule him, right in front of his face. Even Broncos Head Coach John Fox said Tebow would be "screwed" in a traditional offense. What happened to coaches giving words of encouragement?
Despite the criticisms, despite his publicized lack of quarterbacking skills, Tebow is winning. He is 3-1 as a starter. Some of his games have been nothing short of, dare I say, miraculous. In Week 7, the Broncos trailed the Miami Dolphins 15-0 with 5:23 left in the game. That is when Tebow somehow orchestrated a stunning comeback win. In Week 10, Tebow completed just two passes in a win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Two passes? How is that possible?
Like him or not, Tebow has been one of the most exciting stories in the National Football League this season. He continues to be bullied and beaten down by all the critics. Yet he remains undaunted. I admire his perseverance. Tebow does not deserve the criticism he receives. He has done no wrong. I will continue to watch and support Tebow. I hope one day this nice guy finishes first. Then maybe, just maybe, we can praise him instead.

deep fades and quick slants are universally known as the easiest passes in football to throw and they're seriously like 60% of the jets passing offense
too bad their qb isn't good at throwing them

I'm kind of buying the Tim Tebow a bit. Its a big if, but even if the guy can get 3-5 more completions a game and keep the running going, it's something, which is more than what they had. The guy is built like Rofflesburger. He'll get hit but just get up. I think Tebow might actually be a guy built to be a running Qb.
I also just like it, as it is something different. I dug the wildcat too and am kind of sad it faded pretty quick. I also kind of dig how the Raiders and Chargers pretty much live by chucking it half way down the field all the time (even though it isn't quite as successful). I'm just bored with the whole dink and dunk passing game. That crap has gotten so BORING. I'd rather watch clubs run the freaking ball instead of playing touch football which is what half of that dink and dunk passing game is and the other half looking for a bunch of weird phantom fouls that might or might not be called depending on the angle the ref has non the play.
I could buy the Bronco's 8-8 at this point, which is probably Elway/Fox's worst nightmare. Tebow does just good enough they have to go into next season continuing the experiment. It was a changing time in the NFL, but Broncos won plenty of ugly games with Elway. The guy is a legend now, but the guy wasn't statistically like Montana or Marino.

as a raiders fan the "success" of Tebow does make me more intrigued by Terrelle Pryor since I generally think Tebow is a poor man's Pryor.

The dink and dunk is fun to watch when it is Peyty, Brady or say Brees running it, especially with Manning and no-huddle, as when it is cooking - it's similar to a killer run game, as it is enforcing your will on the opponent. And with those guys you keep waiting for the big strike. But I freaking hate watching clubs like the Jets or Flacco, try to run permutations on it where they complete 3 of 5 passes in a sequence for like 9 yards. It's like the passing version of a Frank Kush offense - as exciting as sawdust.
― earlnash, Friday, 18 November 2011 05:45 (thirteen years ago)
throwing a pick 6 on a dink takes a lot of the luster off.

Eh, I don't root for the Steelers really anytime. Steelers/Pats or Steelers/Ravens - I pretty much just hope that Kthulu chooses their stadium to open up the vortex when they are playing.
Tebow is kind of built like Conan for a Qb. McNair was also built that way too.

McNair kind of bulked up as his career went on. He wasn't quite as stout early on in Houston.

man if the Panthers didn't have the worst defense in the league they may be able to run something like this very well
it sucks that Tebow is probably gonna come crashing down to earth hard but A) The AFC West looks awful all around so who knows and B) watching Tebow pull games out of his ass in the final 5 minutes is such endless entertainment, I cannot get enough of it
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 13:38 (thirteen years ago)
Half his games at UF were the exact same way. (The other half were them crushing their opponents by five or more scores.)
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:42 (thirteen years ago)
if course the prerequisite for tebow 'pulling games out of his ass' is that the other team not score more than like two touchdowns
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:51 (thirteen years ago)
don't forget the Sanchize pick-6 which I still don't understand. I mean if you're Sanchez - midway 3rd quarter, up by 7 vs. a team that really cannot score at all on offense, you have to be thinking that one score will ice the game, that your defense will probably win it on its own and that the Broncos will struggle so hard to put together TWO scoring drives, that you'll get so many more chances unless you do something astoundingly dumb. I mean the throw itself was very stupid but the situation where you can pretty much ONLY lose by throwing a pick-6 makes it dumb squared.
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
having not seen him play a game yet, i was kinda shocked by just how bad tebow's arm is. dude missed at least four open throws.having seen sanchize play basically, oh, all his pro games, i was not shocked by how inaccurate he is past ten yards.

I am! I miss you guys too! I was in the ER last night chattin' with people about their abdominal pains and whatnot, and then last Thursday (and this Sunday) I was away with limited access to football, which I fear may be a recurring theme. For the next like 5-6 weeks I am going to everywhere to put on a suit and talk about how I want to be a neurologist, it's gonna be kinda nuts. I still read all of these threads but I am increasingly struggling to participate. But I wanna.
But yes the important thing is THE PACKERS (they are probably still beatable, but it'd be OK if they weren't). Also Clayton Kershaw.

Neurology is a lil weird in that you have to spend your first year out of med school doing a medicine internship (or another thing called a transitional year that is sort of like a medicine intern year but alternately easier and more surgery-containing. I dunno, I only applied to like two of those). Some of the places I am going (especially those in the middle of the country) have that year attached, so like when I was at Virginia last week they had a guaranteed spot, so I'd just go to Charlottesville next year and then stay for residency after. And then most of the places where I applied out west (plus some of the ones out East, most of which I did not apply to) only offer the neurology part of the residency (which will begin in 2013 after I am done with intern year), and you are on your own to find an intern program. So I am doing both intern year interviews and residency interviews. And then, at the end of all that, I pick who I like most, and the programs all pick who they like most, and we both send our lists of BFFs to a big computer in the sky and that will tell me where I get to move to.
It sounds a little insane but then I had a Psych resident who went to med school in India talk about the residency selection process in India and THAT was basically the most insane thing I've ever heard. USA #1
Also I AM ALREADY INSIDE YOUR BRAIN MAAAAANNNNNN. I am not gonna be a neurosurgeon so I can only look with pictures, though.
xp How dare you

I mean I admire that kind of conviction in any football player, and zaniness aside he's really just trying to do what he thinks is right and moral, gives everything on the field (see: bowling over Revis rather than running OOB as most QBs would do), believes in his teammates, cares not about stats or playing time, and seems like an utterly sincere guy, fanatic or not.
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

that's a different question b/c he played for the team I loved, and as such I really did like him regardless of whatever, and besides you can't really compare the two, no way Favre would take a hit for his team
if I were a Bronco fan i'd probably feel different about the whole situation. you can like a player regardless of whether or not he is any good. my favorite pitcher is Bruce Chen which I can't really justify at all.

I don't really want to turn this into another dumb abortion debate but I disagree with basically everything in this post, especially as you're making it out as though pro-life violence is a huge ordeal in this country, it's killed what, like dozens? ― yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 November 2011 21:21 (thirteen years ago)
most ilxors outside of the sports forums are utterly clueless on how you can admire someone for their accomplishments on the field without necessarily having to have an opinion on them "as a person", so no thanks
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:21 (thirteen years ago)
god damn clueless ilxors
― iatee, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago)
ps you can't admire tebow for his accomplishments on the field, so
― iatee, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago)
typically i don't associate much with that type, most of the people I know or have heard root for Tebow do so b/c they (essentially) think the NFL is way more entertaining if he succeeds, which is how I see it too
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago)
well that's honest enough, but I would find the nfl way more entertaining if he has a spinal injury, so you'll have to accept my reasoning too
― iatee, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:26 (thirteen years ago)
winning 4 out of 5 starts despite playing being a nearly historically bad quarterback on a team that's pretty terrible otherwise is pretty impressive!
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:26 (thirteen years ago)
denver's defense is not terrible

tim has shown me that if i want it badly enough and i hold true to christian values, i can achieve anything despite the obstacle of my personal incompetence. it's like the american dream gave birth to a son on earth.
― Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:31 (thirteen years ago)
xp they've allowed more points than any team but Indy
― frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago)
yes does that stat have any relevance to the games where tebow won
― iatee, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago)
fair enough; let me amend that to:denver's defense was not terrible last night

if you phrase it like that instead of "i want him to get hurt because he's actively pro-life" then its less objectionable
the most i've ever really wanted a football player to fail was Favre in 2009 and 2010, it's way way more fun seeing him fail because of his own bad decision making (like in 2009) than it is to see him actually sustain a brutal injury

what the fucking christ is going on here
― call all destroyer, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:38 (thirteen years ago)
anyway m@tt's original post is otm in that tebow's on-field success would be harmful to other ppl and we shouldn't lose sight of that

we need to get one of ilx's musicians to write a two second jingle that has a small group of children sing "thaaaaaaaaaaaat's frogbs!"

― Lamp, Friday, 18 November 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

"ps you can't admire tebow for his accomplishments on the field, so"
Maybe not for his stats in the NFL, but it's hard to deny what he did in college.
Weird thing is that his Qb rating in some of these games is not as bad as the completion percentage, mostly as when Tebow connects on a pass it often goes for huge yards. And that doesn't take in account the running yards.
I don't have any skin in the game on all of the off the field persona stuff with Tebow, but it does make watching a crappy Broncos/Jets game kind of fun. I think it might even make a crappy Broncos/Chargers game interesting. I think SD losing to Broncos and Tebow might bring the axe on Norv (possibly).

that seems like it'd be inevitable w/ a defense that doesn't have to expect more than 2 completed passes a game
― iatee, Friday, 18 November 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago)
Wish the Chargers would fire AJ Smith instead of Norv.

Tebow is like the amusing nerd in school who prayed before eating his lunch.
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 November 2011 22:50 (thirteen years ago)
Also as far as Christianity goes he's a bit too showy for my taste, for me to see him as more a marketing tool for Jebus than just a humble Christian boy. thus I am compelled to ridicule him. Beyond that I could care less.
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 November 2011 22:53 (thirteen years ago)
this is really the heart of the issue right here - no way am I watching that game if not for Tebow, and like the announcers (and most ppl watching) I couldn't stop myself from laughing at the sheer absurdity of the final drive. with Orton there's no way that game is remotely interesting. with Tebow its all anyone can talk about.
