AFC / NFC 2011/12 Championship Games: Believed to be one of the few — if not only — “flying dumps” ever recorded.

Sabol said the most impressive dunk he ever saw came at the end of Super Bowl XXXVII, when a group of Tampa Bay Buccaneers players carried a bucket as they ran behind Coach Jon Gruden, who was excitedly sprinting down the sideline.

Sabol said the NFL Films cameramen were running alongside the group, too, giving the entire sequence a certain “National Geographic as an antelope is being stalked quality.” Finally the players dropped the liquid on Gruden as he leaped in the air, providing what Sabol said he believed to be one of the few — if not only — “flying dumps” ever recorded.

“It was impressive,” he said.

I'd never want to hear the name Harbaugh again after the two weeks of hype leading up to kickoff. That said, this is 49ers/Pats.

Not quite as good as "Giant Jerk Shoots Himself," but, hey, they can't all be winners.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 21 January 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

I really don't like 3 of the 4 clubs, so the odds that I am good with the results will not be that likely.

49ers impressed me last week. They got a bit of everything. I think the game with the Giants being a pretty much total pickem, as the NY passing game definitely has more horse power and their running game has come along. Then again the Niners went toe to toe and beat the best offense this year with the Saints. Close game, but I'm leaning SF by a field goal.

I could see Baltimore knocking off NE, but I have seen them play way too stupid and bad at points to think they can get it done, even though the Pats defense isn't like the old days. Give me NE, but it could be close.

Maybe 9ers Pats? I dunno that the 9ers have any more games in them like last weekend though...I kinda want them to go just to get creamed.

The reward for the stress happens when your team wins the Super Bowl, though, and it is spectacular. Of course, that also means that most of the people who take on the stress just end up unhappy wondering why nobody on the Packers could catch a ball last week.

I am most interested in seeing 49ers-Patriots (for stylistic reasons), but the Ravens are my 3rd favorite team and I really did like the potential angle of having the Ravens play for the Super Bowl in Indianapolis the year the Colts finished 2-14 and Peyty possibly said goodbye.

OK Fox's play of the year apparently had LeGarrette Blount running past the entire Green Bay Packers winning over the dude on the Bengals who did the flip and stuck the landing.

i realize that it's not a complete pass, he holds onto that and the ravens win, just saying it probably should be reviewed. the dumb thing about this "all scoring plays must be reviewed" rule is that it doesn't overturn anything that wasn't called a score but should have been...this probably wasn't one of them but it's happened a few times this season

frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Sunday, 22 January 2012 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 22 January 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

"i think that's the worst shank in the history of football... at least scott norwood was like 3 inches off."

Drunken kicker's kick with the Colts to blow that playoff game against the Steelers the year they won it all was really bad. That thing I don't think touched the endzone, it was like a coffin corner punt.

They probably didn't review that last Ravens pass as the NFL didn't have time to sell another advertisement for it, which I think is the real reason they do that stupid 'we review all TDs' BS.

earlnash, Sunday, 22 January 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I also have a theory if your kicker is the 'most accurate kicker' in NFL history (at that point), your team is totally screwed in big games.

"An eligible receiver who catches a forward pass from the quarterback on his own team in the end zone, is, by rule, deemed to have scored a touchdown, and his team will be awarded six points, with the option to either kick for a single point or attempt a run or pass from scrimmage from the 2 yard line for two points in an untimed down following the touchdown. However, if the ball is caught in the end zone by a player from the opposing team--which in this case, it was not--the ball will be said to have been intercepted, and the receiver has the option to return the ball out of the end zone, or down it for a touchback."

Billy Cundiff and Joe Flacco were prominently involved for the Ravens, I think is the issue

Alex Smith is mobile!

Is Smith about to get all Steve Young up in this mother?

This game hasn't had the fireworks of the Niners/Saints game, but really it has been played about as close.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

I really like watching the 49ers play defense.

C-L, Monday, 23 January 2012 02:53 (thirteen years ago)

God he just Flaccoed it out there when it mattered most.

C-L, Monday, 23 January 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

I knew they'd show up eventually

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 January 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

Joe Flacco played pretty well today. That throw he made that got broken up was dead on the money in a tight window.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 02:59 (thirteen years ago)

flacco played v well I thought, missed the one wide open bomb badly, threw that int, p solid besides that

lag∞n, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

manning waited so long there

johnny crunch, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

Like I feel like outside of Davis and maybe Gore the offense doesn't deserve to score points, but the Def/ST totally deserve the Super Bowl.

xp the throw at the end was perfect but Flacco also made several other poor decisions late.

johnny crunch, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

Victor Cruz!

C-L, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

Flacco out played Brady, who really wasn't exceptional. I think the story of the last couple of weeks is that NE's defense has played really well, maybe a bit reminiscent of the Colts run a few years back when they were shite all year then played great in the playoffs. NE had some success running the ball today too.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

if Cruz even caught that

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Monday, 23 January 2012 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Brady made more bad throws today than I can remember him making in a while.

C-L, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

I think the Niners problem on offense is that their wideouts are just freaking terrible more than Alex Smith.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

terrible punt

bnw, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

C-L, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

Brady played like poop but the ravens D is v good so

lag∞n, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:05 (thirteen years ago)

also the patriots won that game for no actual reason

lag∞n, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Monday, 23 January 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

wtf

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 January 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

The Pat's D made a couple of huge plays that cut down points. That one sack with that huge push up the middle along with a false start put the Ravens out of field goal range and they went for it and didn't get it.

The play in the endzone is huge.

That's 10 points right there.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

does that count as a third-down conversion?

Cool thing about these OT rules is that it gives you a good reason to go for the TD and possibly get the classic real "sudden death" ending like in the 58 NFL championship.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

That is the second possible INT SF has missed because they had two guys with a play on the ball collide.

lag∞n, Monday, 23 January 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like the Giants are going to match up pretty well vs. the Pats - I can see the Giants putting up 30+ as Eli and Cruz really seem to be peaking and the Pats pass defense is ripe to be picked apart, and I think they pressure Brady enough to force him into some bad throws (same thing the Ravens did). Will be close but I think that the Giants are once again peaking at the right time while the Pats haven't really looked good in victory the last 6 weeks or so, outside of the second Denver game.

frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Monday, 23 January 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

the giants are clearly a better team than the patriots, going by overall talent level. when they come undone, it is usually because oft he weird psychological problems that team seems to have as a group. the relationship between coughlin and the players is so bizarre. they either just don't give a fuck or they buy in 100% and with a 3 playoff wins under their belts they are true believers right now. the sad truth is that new england has no business winning this game. doesn't mean they won't, of course.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 23 January 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)

if the pats win again it is nbd. if the giants win, 2007 stops being an aberration, ie we all lose. the only possible upside to a gients win is that eli goes 2-1 ahead of his much more talented brother. and it is hard to see any more rings looming for big bro.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

hey rs how was your blood pressure on sunday?

i was a complete mess of internalized stress.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

I can't really explain the 2 losses to Washington but the Giants did have a rough middle of the schedule.

I think part of it is that they started getting healthy and the new people on defense started to gell at the end of the year.

Sun, Nov 6
New England Patriots @ New England (5-2)
W 24 - 20

Sun, Nov 13
San Francisco 49ers @ San Francisco (7-1)
L 20 - 27

Sun, Nov 20
Philadelphia Eagles vs Philadelphia (3-6)
L 10 - 17

Mon, Nov 28
New Orleans Saints @ New Orleans (7-3)
L 24 - 49

Sun, Dec 4
Green Bay Packers vs Green Bay (11-0)
L 35 - 38

The Pats only played 3 games against playoff teams losing to the Steelers and Giants while beating the Broncos.

earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

if eli wins big brother will probably be favring around until he dies on the field or wins another championship

iatee, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

lol poor benson.

fwiw i pretty much agree with your assessment. patriots will need to play much, much better than they did this week and keep getting treats from the ghost of myra kraft.

there are not enough games basically is the thing

yeah in order to really get a good set of data you'd need teams to play like 100 games, but if teams played like 100 games (or even 30) everyone would probably die. it's like the schrondinger's cat of sports.

iatee, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

i think ochocinco is this year's schrodinger's cat

this is funny u bitter dork (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

it was sad during the last game when phil simms was all ochocinco is inactive today because he attended the funeral of his father yesterday, then he goes I think thats why hes inactive :(

giants win and they establish long term domination
giants lose and it's still 1-1 in the superbowl
PATS LOSE EITHER WAY
*think about it*

this is almost right tho really the crux of it is that even if the pats win they havnet beaten an undefeated giants team, a perfect season is like winning 3 superbowls, I'll take some measure of solace if they destroy them and Eli has 6 interceptions and poops his pants and crys, otherwise it's not really revenge, tho it is a superbowl win which is p sweet, also would unequivocally punch the pats dynasty ticket, but no im not really pumped for this matchup

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

There definitely have been seasons though where you pretty much knew the 2 or 3 teams that would be in the Superbowl.

Pretty much the early 90s were that way as the Cowboys and 49ers were so much better than everyone else. Giants knocked off the Niners one year that was unexpected. At the same time the Bills pretty much were a huge step over everyone else in the AFC.

Pretty much Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins, Cowboys and Vikings dominated the 70s. That's nine of the winners and almost all of the teams that made it there. Redskins, Rams and Broncos made it and lost once and I think that's it. Oh yeah the Colts beat the Cowboys in the fugly bowl.

^it gets better. if you remember against arizona early in the season Victor Cruz went down without being touched on a catch in the late fourth quarter and just dropped the ball. Like he was in college or something. The refs came up with a doozy of a call and said it wasnt a fumble.Giants go on to score and win the game.
