Tracy Morgan was on Jimmy Fallon tonight, talking insane about vaguely football-related things, and went on to a bit about how he and Tom Brady grew up together and went to the same special ed school. Tom had to wear the safety helmet.

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

ha theyre reading bradys draft scouting report right now and its pretty hilariously wrong

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:59 (thirteen years ago)

no poll?

i'll be rooting for the giants but i really cant help but feel the pats are gonna take this. you can argue that the giants are better than they were in 07 and the pats are worse, but i think the matchup favors the pats a little more this time. in 07, if you took away randy the pats had difficulty working the intermediate area of the field. their current offense is in a much better position to mitigate a great pass rush. obv the defense is bad and eli's gonna have a great chance to throw it around the field, could be a shootout, but i could see the pats controlling the ball for a lot of the game

Hungry4Ass, Saturday, 4 February 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

Prediction: the Pats will have a big play using Chad Ochocinco

Moodles, Saturday, 4 February 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

That will be their "use Aaron Hernandez as a running back" surprise play of the game.

Moodles, Saturday, 4 February 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

i could almost see belichick giving him something like that just because he likes chad. it'd be shocking if he played a real role outside of that, but i'd love it if he had a huge game

Hungry4Ass, Saturday, 4 February 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

eh chad played i think one snap in the two playoff games after playing 22 in the last reg season game which also coincides with mcdaniels coming back. i don't think he's playing.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 4 February 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

i'd be happy to be wrong and see him make a play tho

call all destroyer, Saturday, 4 February 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

belichick would do this, just cause

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 February 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

Chad had to miss the Baltimore game because his father passed away. He should at least be showing up for some snaps.

didnt realize parcells didnt make the hall, thats kinda wack

The Hall of Fame keeps the voting results secret, but a source said the debate about Parcells was particularly contentious, with voters discussing his candidacy for about 57 minutes of the seven-hour voting process. Parcells did make the cut from 15 finalists to 10, but couldn't make the final cut.

A small but vocal minority disapproved of the way Parcells jumped from team to team in the latter part of his career, never staying more than four years with the Patriots, Jets, Cowboys or Dolphins. The dissenters also pointed out that Parcells never won a Super Bowl without Belichick, his former top defensive assistant, on staff.

johnny crunch, Sunday, 5 February 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

i had it on in the background for a while and it was lame as hell. but i gotta say i always get a mild amount of enjoyment from watching jocks in suits, esp. when theyre frowning at jokes like dismayed cave trolls that know they don't like something but can't figure out why

Assmaster (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 5 February 2012 05:57 (thirteen years ago)

I got to take the Pats to win. I cannot believe 'the evil one' will allow himself to lose twice to the team from Gotham.

That said, I hate the fxxxin Pats - GO GIants.

I think Bill Parcells should get in the hall of fame, but I don't think he is a first ballot coach, the guy isn't Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi or Tom Landry. I don't know you can say Parcell was a genius innovator in a new way like those other guys, who literally invented ways that changed the game. He's got no more Superbowl wins than Tom Flores. Then again, the NFL Hall of Fame is really weird. Unless you count Sammy Baugh, there ain't a damn punter in the whole thing and it's not like you can play a game without one. There are a gazillion QBs and RBs and like percentage wise not that many offensive linemen. I guess that fame part is the biggest thing.

"bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

aside from the whole not being able to play in the super bowl thing, the tiquan underwood story isn't that heartbreaking

for one there's this

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
CBA says any player active for 8 games still entitled to full SB share. So Tiquan Underwood will receive his SB money and ring, if Pats win.

it's also generally agreed upon now that he only got released yesterday so that the giants couldn't pick him up, but that the pats had informed him long before yesterday that they were indeed going to release him

just mostly sayin that it wasn't like the 2007 match with the back and forth lead changes in the 4th, but that the game itself felt like a chess match and I liked it. granted I think both clubs woulda gotten their asses beat by their 2007 versions (though I think Eli's better at this point though obv).

My friend called me in the last 20 seconds to tell me his cable had just gone out and asked me to do play by play as I watched.

nfl network appeared to just be showing belichick being interviewed on like a camera phone

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

It is always good to see that Brady is indeed human. dude hasn't played at his usual godlike levels in the postseason pretty much since the click read :00 against the Eagles. Obv a shoo-in hall of famer of course and still top 5 in the league but it's almost like some magical fairy dust wore off over time.

frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

i kind of wonder how many other coaches would have 'let' bradshaw score. it was fairly obviously the right choice, but unconventional enough that i think a number of coaches might have held tight and pinned their hopes on forcing a fumble/blocking a fg attempt.

mookieproof, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, def the right call, and I think so many other coaches would have been afraid of the casual fan's perception that they either wouldn't have dialed it up or they'd have dressed it up more. I like how Belichick parted the red sea to where it was obvious and Bradshaw's "OMG WHAT DO I DID???!!!" moment is all-time classic.

frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

i dont remember the exact math but they were saying it'd be like :20 left? w/ no timeouts only needing a fg....i think the right play is prob not to score the td but it is at least debatable

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

also i guess the 3% chance he misses an extra pt distance kick

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

I was really holding out for a hope that Bradshaw woulda started running sideline to sideline Tecmo Bowl style to run out clock

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

Field goals are usually automatic that close, but you do have three places it can go wrong with the snap, the hold and the kick. For some reason, just like with free throws, when the game is on the line the place kick seems to often bring out the screw ups.

earlnash, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

I bet if it was switched around, Coughlin would have gone to block the kick.

earlnash, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

coughlin said he didnt tell bradshaw to go down

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

eh I'd put the chances of Brady getting 80 yards in a minute far above the chances of an extra kick fucking up

iatee, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

nah he woulda wondered why he was suddenly coach of the Patriots xxpost

extra point kick*

iatee, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah. besides, if they kicked on a first or second down, and the snap went bad, they could just eat the ball and try again.

frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)

I do dig that the law of averages have come back on Belichick and the Pats, as they got a whole lot of floss on their wins which were all really close games and could have gone wither way. It wasn't like the Pats were the Niners blowing out clubs 55 to 10.

Assmaster (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

xpost. it's really interesting though because the the last three times they were there, they were well above their opponents in talent. Pre-free agency those blowouts were more common though just due to how far apart the AFC and NFC were in talent.

I will say the Eagles game was closer in score than it was on the field. Once they tied it at 14, they dominated.

frogbs, stills, and nash (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

xpost - most definitely. a play or two the other way in any of their super bowls and that's the difference

Hambone Italiano (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

The first one NE totally owes the win to Mike Martz whose hubris kept throwing the damn ball instead of managing the clock and running Marshall Faulk. All they had to do was run the ball for no gain like twice instead of in-completions and NE doesn't have the time to get it into FG range.

earlnash, Monday, 6 February 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

time of possession: giants +15 mins
turnovers forced by NE: 0
three and outs forced by NE: 0
shortest NYG drive: 7 plays, 22 yards
# of NE drives: 9, of which 6 from inside their 20, of which 3 from inside their 10

crushing possession and field position - that is how you win a football game tbh. great job giants. pats desperately need a defense that shows up between the 20s.

needing to make that call was a direct result of the safety at the beginning of the game. Otherwise the Pats would have held them to a field goal and taken it to OT.

Moodles, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

I mean that seemed like a genuine coaching mistake to me and one that bb should be grilled for even, but since it's so counterintuitive and moneyballish it's not gonna happen.

/ also since the pats did let them score (just not soon enough)

iatee, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

it's a hard decision to make when the offense has done nothing with the ball for 20+ minutes, tho. i was yelling at them to let the first bradshaw run go in, but before that it is not as easy a call as you make it sound. it's the flip of the 4-and-2 decision where the offense was hot and the defense couldn't stop anything.

gisele <3. with bianca (wilfork's wife) in that clip. i was offline for a long time and just saw it. that's the big deal? good grief, that's nothing.

she does have a point. it's not just that a couple of guys dropped passes but BB has really failed at drafting and developing any WRs.. they have no deep threat

i mean the consistent strategery of stockpiling all these picks and trading down every year.. it would be nice if belichick the coach didn't have to try so hard to make up for the deficiencies of belichick the personnel guy. maybe josh mcd will help

terrible how?

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

they should have won? they were ahead with the ball and a chance to ice the game?

i mean, if the giants led the whole time and straight up outplayed them you could be like yeah not terrible the gmen were just better. but on the whole it was a pretty terrible loss and i think there's a lot of rationalizing going on up here.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

so there's not really the 'tragic' aspect there. I mean I guess there is if you are a pats fan. but it's not like they blew a huge lead or lost to a worse team. they lost a close and fair game.

What would have made me lol would have been if dude had stopped at the goal line and not kneeled, but just waited for a Patriot to actually tackle him. I was hoping he'd stop and pats players would try and push him in the endzone, that woulda been beautiful

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

on the one hand i disagree with cad, because despite leading into the 4th, NE were the second best team and the turn was kind of inevitable. the giants played it perfectly - pats can't stop the short-mid passes and brady can't dump points on you if he only gets a handful of possessions and those from inside his 20. they put themselves in the best position to win. it's not like NE lost a 2 score lead or anything.

on the other hand, the loss is a piece of shrapnel moving towards my heart and rationalizing is like the complicated and unlikely iron armor keeping me alive, somehow, with magnets maybe.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

there was a quote from the nyg running backs coach who said they'd practiced situations like that and he was supposed to basically wait it out and force the other team to knock him in so it would have been an amazing stand off if that couldve materialized

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

i would totally agree with this except for the possession with the welker drop and branch miss. that was the chance to survive in spite of all the above.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah brady and the offense are getting some stick for not performing but they did okay in the circumstances. a TD drive in the 4th would obv have been the difference between okay and championship great. would championship years brady have completed one of those drives? maybe. altho his specialty was getting in FG range of course.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

Putting more than 13 men on the field would probably qualify as a "palpably unfair" act, which the refs have significant latitude to punish. The lesson here, as always, is to have plausible deniability.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's very interesting

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

that's from the end of the grantland story, which discusses the origins of the strategy as well: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7545771/the-patriots-giants-super-bowl-rematch-disappoint

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

also a lot of things that are 'palpably unfair' are just things that haven't been accepted as 'acceptable strategies' (like icing the kicker, etc.) bradshaw stopping at the 1 yd line could also be palpably unfair.

if i was a pats fan i'd be pretty broken up about this cuz really that brady to welker play should be all but automatic...

otoh, not to get all bill barnwell in this bitch, BUT the giants did recover three fumbles that legit bounced on the ground for like 2 seconds at a time... and that can't really be blamed on the pats

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

but yeah, brady should've closed it out

the welker miss, the branch miss (altho i thought kenny phillips tipped this?) and the awful hail mary were pretty big flubs

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

it's not like the Giants lucked into a win, you guys

when opportunity presented itself, the Giants executed more often than New England, ergo they won the game

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

they didn't really play better or worse than the pats overall and teh score was close enough that you can argue that they 'lucked into a win'. footballs bounce pretty unpredictably, one small thing here or there woulda turned the score around.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

teh score

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

that doesn't mean they didn't 'deserve' the win, they played well against a good team. sorta like the niners game. but yeah, luck generally does play a huge role in close games. sorta ruins the narrative to accept that, but I think it's hard to argue w/.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

IMO if the Giants got lucky with anything, it was Brady gifting them 2 points right at the beginning of the game. That wasn't the winning margin but I think it gave them momentum/belief that sustained them throughout the game, even after the Pats went up 8 points on them.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

that rulebook article was v v interesting.
i'm shocked that welker missed that pass. blame the mustache.

ELI OWNS YOUR HUSBAND (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that safety has anything to do with luck! that was a decision made by brady and a play made by the giants. whereas the ball not bouncing into gronk's hands on the last play of the game = there is an element of luck here.

xp

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

"lucky" should have been in quotes; I pretty much agree with that was a decision made by brady and a play made by the giants

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

a lot of those onion predictions basically came true!

ELI OWNS YOUR HUSBAND (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah also the nyg offense is not motivated or influenced by the safety at all, except maybe on the ensuing free kick a little. it was just a quirky lil thing. when the pats had scored 17 str8 pts the giants were not thinking, but we had that safety!

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

1. Dropped passes by Welker, Hernandez, Branch
2. 3 failed fumble recoveries
3. Brady safety and INT

If any instance of any of these had gone the other way, I think the Pats have a good shot to win. By that reasoning, I have to call this a Patriots failure rather than great play by Giants. Pats needed to step it up and they didn't.

Moodles, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

basically any game decided by one score that coulda been changed by a single turnover or catch or bounce = yeah tons of luck. giants beat niners = lots of luck. giants beat pats = decent amount of luck. giants beat packers = pretty decisive win

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

lotta sour grapes itt

max, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

idk I would be bummed if I were a giants fan w/ that knowledge that robot football historians will judge their wins for their statistical improbability

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

you can't get too carried away with the luck involved in 2 fumbles not being turnover. the other one was a penalty on the pats, so hang that on them. the brady safety comes from him having to throw under pressure out of his end zone - let's give the giants a little bit of credit for engineering that. you can compare the bad throw to welker to the great throw to manningham, i guess, and say NY just made the play better on that one. but there's no point isolating these pieces from the rest of the game. the giants devised the right game plan, executed it while making hardly any mistakes, and put themselves in the best position to win the game.

the question that remains is how NE could have approached game differently. i know i hated seeing them drain time off the clock in their second-last drive, erring on the side of assuming a successful drive. i feel like they needed to make it a faster game, ratchet the tempo and make it a shootout. that is 3 close, tight games in a row lost to the giants. a shootout has to give NE the edge. throw the fuckin house at eli every other down and pass the ball 50 times. the actual NE gameplan seemed to be 1. hope we can keep scoring on them 2. hope eli regresses five years and fucks up

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

the pats were 'lucky' that billy cundiff blew a v. makeable fg attempt in the afc championship. it evens out.

it was a close game and the giants took better advantage of their opportunities than the pats did. that's all.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

scoring is only one of the desirable things you can do when you have the ball, and sometimes not even the most desirable (eg the bradshaw td). NY made the game shorter and improved their field position on every single drive. those were critical factors in why they won.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

scoring was not necessarily more critical - if they had scored often fast instead of scoring less often but slowly, they probably would have lost that more expansive game. you are oversimplifying a complex business

the slow consistent possessions were the obvious strategy versus the patriots, the key weakness exploited and the key strength to nullified, and the giants did just that. i really think they were excellent in that game.

they ran at a slightly higher rate than the pats but this was still a game w/ 40 manning attempts. they had the ball more due to the safety + brady int more than any real strategy imo. I never buy the 'we're going to keep the ball but *not score a td* as a strategy'. they wanted to score tds and they failed at scoring tds.

pats dfensive game plan also fostered this, playing like zero 1-on-1 man coverage so there'd be no big plays downfield...

halfway through the 4th q and the giants are in a pretty shitty spot and the game is effectively out of eli's hands. pats offensive deserves credit for fucking this up, but if we're looking at the game at that point the story def isn't 'everything's going by plan for the giants'. and as much as the next two drives defined the end result, if you've only got half a q left and the game is essentially out of your hands that's not a game you 'played well' imo.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

oh shit a chart

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

I'm right...scientifically

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

the giants didn't completely dominate the game so how can they have played well? i have seen teams score over 50 points loads of times and they didn't get half that many!

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

context is nothing, chart is everything

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

the chart is the context! I'm not saying the giants 'didn't play well' or even that they played worse than the pats. they played fairly competently, their offense didn't do a v. good job at getting points on the board, which does matter and put them in a pretty shitty spot in the 4th q. pats also played competently, which is why one or two catches would have turned the game.

serious "pythagorean expectation" answer: giants should have won 37-0.

omar little, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

safety would have been a brady pick returned for a TD, 7-0. cruz td catch, 14-0. gotkowski FG blocked, returned for TD. 21-0. back and forth for awhile, brady marches downfield and passes towards woodhead, blocked by JPP. halftime: 21-0. hernandez drops easy td pass in 3rd quarter, 21-0 still. 2 FGs from tynes, 27-0. bradshaw TD run, 34-0. brady fumbles on opening play of subsequent drive, recovered by giants, tynes FG as time expires, 37-0.

omar little, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

according to my math, if the Patriots had scored more points than the Giants, then the Patriots would have won

that seems to be in line with the controversial 'scoring is important' narrative that I've been attempting to sell

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

i thought the whole point of super bowls was to have really good teams play against each other? meaning the statistical certainties get whittled down to hazy 50/50s? which is what happened?

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

i'm kind of losing track of what this argument even is

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

the argument = "ILXers wish Superbowl had lasted forever, attempt to simulate it via opinions; also, lol @ Patritos"

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

two really good teams playing each other doesn't always lead to 50/50 games, but this one did. I guess my only argument is that if the giants played better they did by a v. tiny margin really but, yeah, that was enough. this was a margin of error game and not at all a victory that demonstrated that the giants were 'better'.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

well sure, cue angry swigging

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

i guess my point is trying to argue what a team like the giants or the patritos "should be" able to do "on average" is sorta pointless. it's not average! they're playing each other!

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

well... the Giants were better at turning their drives into points; considering that both teams scored two touchdowns and a field goal, the Giants had an unanswered field goal which won them the game even without the lol saftey

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

well I am not trying to argue that the giants did not win that game, statistically they did win that game 100% of the time iirc, this is about 'who played better' and 'what did that game reveal about the two teams'.

iatee, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

the browns beat the Patriots two years ago and last season if the ball would've bounced the right way they were super bowl shoe-ins so ergo
