Tebow goes to...

now that Tebow's been upstaged by Manning, what is his future? I tried to include every team with a shaky starting QB situation, even if some of these are obviously longshots.

I'm taking Jacksonville with 90% probability.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 March 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

Miami or backing up Manning, I think.

polyphonic, Monday, 19 March 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

I'm voting JAX too but honestly, who knows with this league

frogbs, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

taking his talent...elsewhere. anywhere, plz. (and i will watch, because it is compelling and lol).

obv i want him gone, but externalities aside, would he be a great backup to manning? no backup will be able to run mannings offense really, and here you have a dude who loves the ball in his hands, trusts his feet, and will go out there and run around and through ppl.

low-rise concentration camps (Hunt3r), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

I think Manning might not be too thrilled about having Tebow hanging around, and ultimately if that's the case then Tebow is gone or else Manning wouldn't have agreed.

polyphonic, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

solid poll, frogbs

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

think he goes in a cave now, for three days? so oakland?

bnw, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

jacksonville seems.... too obvious, i feel like things just never work out exactly as they would seem.

i feel like maybe the dolphins would have interest but i also think they're aware that they'd be seen as utterly desperate if they traded for him, and as such they may just lay off of him

so i voted cleveland... which makes very little sense but he's not too dissimilar to mccoy? feel like they'd just draft another QB instead, but i don't know.

staying to back up manning makes some sense cuz you'd have to be a complete fool not to have a serious back up for a guy coming off of SPINAL FUSION SURGERY, but i don't think they would want to deal w/ the controversy, even tho you know tebow would be a foot soldier

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

contemplating tebow's future always involves some magical thinking poly xpost

low-rise concentration camps (Hunt3r), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

if jacksonville can get him for a four or something, they should do it -- aside from the ramifications of tebow going back to north florida, gabbert was an absolute utter disaster last year

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

gabbert SUUUUUX, i have to magically think jax is the place

low-rise concentration camps (Hunt3r), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

well we've seen what happens when you put Tebow in a regular offense built around a good passer. what's interesting about this (and bad for Tebow, obviously) is that you kinda have to change your whole offense to accomodate his "skills", which is why I don't think he'd be a good backup for Manning at all

frogbs, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

gabbert is the worst rookie qb i've ever seen outside of jimmy clausen

granted jax's WRs last year would've embarrassed an arena football team but....

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

well i think the thing w/ tebow is that everyone in denver is a holdover from last year, so i guess they could probably go back to something resembling the tebow offense in a pinch

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

miami imo

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I don't really see Denver practicing two offenses, but you never know. If he stays I'd think he would get used in some TE sets or occasionally be used as a fullback? I dunno Denver really has the possibility to do some goofy things offensively now but I'm not sure if they'll want to, especially if Jacksonville is going to offer them a 3rd or 4th for him

frogbs, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

broncos line already has big enough challenge learning how to pass block tbh

low-rise concentration camps (Hunt3r), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

i think they'll trade him just bcuz the media frenzy of having tebow AND peyton at the same training camp would be totally suffocating

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

miami's the best possible destination because you get to enjoy a full season of tebowmania but also get that #1 pick at the end of it to draft barkley.

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 19 March 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

denver already calling around, supposedly

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

Why does everyone think Matt Barkley is the obvy #1 qb pick in 2013? I mean, I get why. But WHY?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 March 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

because QB is the most important position and matt barkley is the best college nfl-style QB

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 March 2012 23:58 (thirteen years ago)

Barkley put up big numbers in a shitty year for the Pac-10, but then again so did Luck.

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

there's literally 0% chance he goes to oakland -- b/w palmer and pryor they've already given up three high draft picks for QBs, there's no way they're giving up anything for tebow

i think they have the least amount of draft picks in the league over the next two seasons

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

so, i didn't really understand what the contract with tebow is, but is sounds like the broncos basically gave him a $5m advance on his salary, and either he or his new team has to pay that back. but it is part of his agreed salary for future years, so i don't really see what it is a problem, the jets (or whoever) would still be paying the same cash. i guess it is a matter of when they pay it, and if they can weasel out of it.

I'm guessing there is one thing that Cromartie and Tebow don't have in common.

"Cromartie has fathered nine children with eight women living in six states.[17] In March 2010, the Jets provided Cromartie with a $500,000 advance so he could make outstanding child support payments.[18] Cromartie married Terricka Cason, who starred on E!'s Candy Girls, on July 2, 2010.[18] Cason gave birth to a daughter, Jerzie, in April 2010.[18]"

All I know is that SNL has to do another sketch with them trading Tebow to the Jets.

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:57 (thirteen years ago)

i think tebow's performance last year is widely regarded (rightly or wrongly) as a combination of having the right defense and being just bad enough to put himself into a position where a series of lucky plays against unprepared teams allowed the broncos to come back to win a handful of games. plus i think the broncos hate him for whatever reason, i think it goes beyond the skill set and the xtian thing. kinda feel like there might be something more to it? brady quinn didn't harsh on him w/o reason imo.

omar little, Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

plus i think the broncos hate him for whatever reason, i think it goes beyond the skill set and the xtian thing.

no, i think they rightly realized that regardless of what he did in 8 games last year, he's just not good enough to be a long term starting QB in the nfl

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

I'd hate him for putting the team in a situation where 'good decisions' were something that would make your fanbase hate you

He seems fairly intellectually incurious, which might have something to do with why they just let him run his college offense. Hoping that he would suddenly gain study skills seems like a lot to ask for. I'm not sure he can even run the vanilla version of Peyton's offense that Painter et al. were stuck with.

It seemed to me that he was more invested in visiting sick kids in the hospital than learning how to play his position, but while that may be admirable it doesn't go over well in an locker room if you are focusing on your passions instead of your craft. See Myron Rolle.

polyphonic, Thursday, 22 March 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

i don't understand nfl trades anyway. he's generally understood to be worth a 4th-round pick in a trade, right? but he was a first round pick himself just a couple years ago, and he's done pretty well considering?

Biggest difference with the draft in the NFL and NBA is that it takes 22 starters, some unique specialists and a lot of bench players to fill an NFL roster. Basketball has a starting 5 and then a bench of 7-10 people.

You rarely ever see a star let alone a superstar/hall of famer come out of nowhere in basketball, partially as people been scouting them since they were a little kid and it does somewhat translate. Not to say there are not busts.

NFL has lots of alltime greats or at least stars that came out of the later part of the draft or were free agents. Part of it is how college football goes down. Some big schools have tons of talent and for some reason some players can't get ahead of guys in college then when given a shot they are great. Some played at small schools and while they might have dominated there, they didn't have a rep from playing in a big conference or team to become high draft picks. The combine kind of shakes some of those guys loose out now, but running a 40 time doesn't equal knowing how to play the game, which sometimes can trump maybe not present overwhelming physical talent into a great player.

Now that the salary cap and setup is fixed, I'd say having draft picks is definitely going back to being the big gold that it always does. Every good club that has a nice run of seasons, you look at their drafts and they had one or two with extra picks that seemed to stock the cubboard with talent.

earlnash, Thursday, 22 March 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

"It seemed to me that he was more invested in visiting sick kids in the hospital than learning how to play his position"

I don't quite get that at all. From all accounts Tebow has been quite a workaholic trying to upgrade his skills and it doesn't seem that he doesn't get the game, it is just he doesn't have the throwing accuracy to play in a pro style offense.

If Tebow can sublimate his ego to doing what he is really good at doing along with playing with a standard QB that understands Tebow's role - I think it would work. Kordell Stewart was a heck of a weapon until they made him the starter.

It would be totally weird, but really the kind of guy you pair Tebow with is that workman like QB. Criminy if you had Tebow playing with Delhomme and that running game a few years ago in Carolina - that would have been wicked. Thing was that Delhome could get it done in points, but there was a definite ceiling he would hit and just screw up.

I would think if the coach came out and said - "hey this is what we are doing" it might work. Maybe with the Rams - you put Tebow and Jackson in the backfield to add a power running game quotient to their game along with running a regular pro style set with Bradford. You run the "T-bone" (I call dibs on that name) in short yardage situations or in the red zone like Florida did Tebow's freshman year when they won the title.

earlnash, Thursday, 22 March 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

tho i do think that teams generally overrate the importance of their picks

like, if you're outside of the top 12 picks and you wouldn't give up your first round pick for mike wallace you're fucking stupid

also i would posit that maybe he got the feeling that the jags don't actually think he's that good at football, but would just roll the dice cuz of his popularity -- i think it's pretty well known that there's a clash there b/w the football ppl in the front office & the ownership, so maybe he felt like if he went there he would effectively be whored out?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 22 March 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, idk. neither situation is perfcet. i mean, the jags just spent a top 10 pick on a QB last year, so it's not like they would've thrown gabbert under the bus, terrible as he is. tebow definitely would've been the starter, but if he played a few bad games in a row there would be a call for gabbert to get a shot.

otoh sanchez was at the edge of the rope last year but they just re-upped his deal so it's not like they're gonna look to bench him anytime soon unless he totally bombs out

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 March 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

i think the truth is that these things are very rarely about the sport, as much as athletes and the media and our friends would like us to believe. these people lead lives off the field, and that leaves us with a huge amount of speculation to do. i'd bet that he didn't want to go play in jax for one or various reasons that may not have to do exclusively with football.

well, the jets shafted Chad Pennington in a similar manner too ... threw him overboard for 2008's shiny off-season object Bret Favre ... although in Chad's case his career really WAS near an end.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 22 March 2012 04:09 (thirteen years ago)

while i'm not blown away by sanchez at this point, i'd be willing to give him another year or two before totally throwing him to the wolves. that, of course, depended on the Jets not being a Mickey Mouse operation and as the day's events have clearly shown (shit, as the past several decades have shown) the Jets are just a Mickey Mouse operation.

“Tony likes to use the wildcat, and Rex is a big proponent because of how hard it is to defend a good one,” a source said.

“[Why] bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more weapons for Mark Sanchez?” cornerback Antonio Cromartie tweeted after news of the trade broke on Wednesday. “Let’s build the team around him.”

Where else would a defensive back feel comfortable blasting a fresh-off-the-presses trade? Cromartie didn’t realize that Tebow is every bit another weapon for Sanchez, even if it means he’s taking some snaps when Sanchez isn’t on the field.

A change-of-pace offensive package, and a 6-4, 240-pound bull to run it, shakes up the Jets offense and makes it easier for Sanchez to operate. It also should help put points on the board.

“What we’ve become is a diverse, dynamic offense that’s going to make it more difficult for opposing defenses to defend,” Tannenbaum said Wednesday night.

And if Tebow’s arrival, complete with his nation of devotees, puts a little pressure on Sanchez, maybe makes him look over his shoulder a bit, then that’s a positive, too. Tebow wasn’t acquired to be the starter in New York, but his presence creates the illusion of a contest.

The jury remains out on the USC product. He has done some great things – winning four road playoff games, showing poise beyond his years and displaying a canny ability to lead late-game comebacks.

Tebow may not fit into the “let’s get a [expletive] snack” franchise at first glance, but that’s mostly because he is unlikely to seek out the spotlight. Even during his magical run as a starter in Denver he rarely did more than one media session per week and spent his time concentrating on game plans, not sideshows.
