FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (CBS/AP)- Arkansas has fired Bobby Petrino, saying he "knowingly misled" and engaged in reckless behavior in a relationship with a female football employee half his age.

BATON ROUGE -- Tyrann Mathieu has been dismissed from the LSU football team for violation of team policy, head coach Les Miles announced on Friday.

"This is a very difficult day for our team," Miles said. "We lose a quality person, teammate and contributor to the program. However, with that being said, we have a standard that our players are held to and when that standard is not met, there are consequences.

"It's hard because we all love Tyrann. We will do what we can as coaches, teammates, and friends to get him on a path where he can have success. We are going to miss him."

Mathieu, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and the nation's top defensive player a year ago, played in 26 games for the Tigers during his two years, racking up 133 total tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss and four interceptions. He also forced 11 fumbles, which ranks first in school history and seventh in NCAA history, to go with eight fumble recoveries.

Mathieu scored four touchdowns for the Tigers, two on punt returns and two on fumble returns.

Much more anti-Michigan content in my feeds than Friday night's pro-MSU content. That's interesting.

(Didn't attend either school. Would happy support both schools but the nonstop smack talk [often between ppl who went to community colleges and MAC schools] is tiresome.)

ughhhh we shoulda won this

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago)

tedford kicking that third FG on 4th and 1 was a fireable offense IMO

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago)

aside from the fact that the kicker had zero shot of making that FG, did he really think that cal was going to win by 3 points? i didn't even care about that game and i was still incredibly aggravated by that

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:44 (twelve years ago)

he's a very, very conservative coach, three 4th down attempts in a game just weren't gonna come out of him. but there was no way we were gonna make that kick.

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah. i mean a lot of coaches would have done it too. it's just nonsensical. if you've already given up 28 points, you probably shouldn't be playing to win by 3 with 4 minutes left

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago)

I feel like the decision woulda made sense in the nfl against a team w/ a moderate-to-bad offense, but when you have a shitty kicker, totally indefensible

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:49 (twelve years ago)

coaches making mathematically shitty decisions is my least favorite thing about football

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago)

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago)

and if you lose, you can blame nerds. win-win.

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago)

lets have an italian guy join our american football team, what could go wrong

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago)

on the positive side, our offense played pretty well against a real team? bigelow might be a new hope for our run game? tho you don't want to base too much on 4 carries. and I think maynard is probably our best qb since aaron rodgers, which is saying absolutely nothing.

iatee, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:59 (twelve years ago)

It's amazing to me that Maynard started the first game on the bench

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:23 (twelve years ago)

After the first 5 or 10 minutes of that game I would not have guessed USC would not score at all in the second half.

crazy the whole SC dream died so quickly

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago)

Between USC losing and UCLA starting very well against Houston, I am having a pretty awesome college football night here.

Dr. (C-L), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago)

they hadn't looked good all year, either. just a really thin team with some good playmakers but....

i mean it's crazy that last year when SC played stanford, SC wasn't even ranked! maybe this was all a bit hasty

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:28 (twelve years ago)

Also it has been pointed out on the Twitters that Stanford gave up fewer points to USC than they did to San Jose State (and also scored fewer points vs SJSU)

Dr. (C-L), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago)

i'm surprised they even scored twice tbh.

also not being able to kick FGs probably didn't help

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:32 (twelve years ago)

granted sc was missing their starting center, and backup center, and played with a 3rd stringer the whole game, but STILL. barkley wasn't in the shotgun because his 3-step drop was more manageable than corralling hobbi's terrible shotgun snaps. what a terrible game. usc's d-line was supposed to be their weak point, and they were playing fine (until the end, but who could blame them after all those 3 and outs)... but goddamn the o-line is horrendous. oh well, at least i'll probably get to see them in a bowl this year.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:34 (twelve years ago)

SC could totally still play in the national title

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:35 (twelve years ago)

the thing about wanting to lose early is def a truism.

they ain't beating oregon twice, but just theoretically speaking.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:36 (twelve years ago)

the turning point was that shitty fake field goal. with woods, lee, agholor, and two good tight ends, and they throw a hail mary to the fullback on the least convincing fake fg ever? just call a pass play with an empty backfield for fuck's sake.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:37 (twelve years ago)

and no, i'm worried about them beating arizona state once, utah once, etc. before even thinking about the pac-12 championship. plus, some team from the big 12 will have 1 loss and go to the nc game this year like they do most years. pac-12 has to be undefeated to have a team go.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:38 (twelve years ago)

i'm a big kiffin believer but he was bad tonight.

USC def has some amazing players but they're just paper thin. nothing can go wrong. i mean, i was just thinking tonight that kiffin is insane for having marquis lee return kicks. could you imagine if he had to miss any time? let alone cuz he got hurt returning kicks.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:40 (twelve years ago)

i agree, although having robey return punts is worse. he's more valuable than anyone on offense save for barkley - in this game, he was maybe challenged twice, and he came up with deflections both times. hobbi will get all the criticism from tonight, since he was legitimately terrible, but marcus martin and john martinez were whiffing all night long, and they're veteran starters. it's not even a being thin issue, it's a 'matt kalil was so dominant he made the entire line look better' issue.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:46 (twelve years ago)

my asshole ex-boss was at the game sending me shit talk texts to throw salt in the wound. YOU WENT TO UC DAVIS YOU FUCKIN WANNABE.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:48 (twelve years ago)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 September 2012 01:00 (twelve years ago)

i know lane kiffin won't win humanitarian of the year, but when your preferred team is coached by nick saban, you're treading a pretty fine line.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Thursday, 20 September 2012 05:20 (twelve years ago)

You don't understand. As much as I hate Tennessee, I honestly felt bad for them after what Kiffin did. I still feel bad for them. He's a prick to other teams in whatever conference he's in. He's a prick to the media. He's probably a prick to his coaches and players. He's just a full grown child.

Saban said he was staying with the Dolphins, and then left the Dolphins. Coaches do that a lot. The thing that really compounded the butthurt there is that Cam Cameron season that followed.

Beano RIP

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 October 2012 16:20 (twelve years ago)

Cook was very entertaining, much better than dudes trying too hard (looking at you Corso).

Will Ron Powlus be a pallbearer?

I disagree with this statement, however:

"and his loss comes as quite a shock -- I'd always assumed he was going to be around forever."

Finding out he only just died is a shock, i assumed he'd been dead for at least a decade.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 11 October 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago)

Love this line:

One of Cook's most famous quips was "Haven't they suffered enough", in response to Major League Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn's offer of lifetime passes to games for returning hostages from Iran.

I suppose this is heresy on I Love NFL, but I follow college football and I don't really give two shits about the NFL. I would also be the first to admit that the level of talent in the NFL is far above the general level of talent in the college game and the NFL game is more competitive in the sense of parity among teams.

There are some extraneous reasons for my interest in college ball and lack of interest in the NFL that have to do with how I spend my Saturdays and Sundays, but the college game is also more capable of surprise, more various and experimental in its offenses, more wildly veering and unpredictable, and just more fun cuz of this.

Plus, I am an Oregonian and right now Oregon has two teams ranked in the top eight of the AP poll. Good times!

Thx. You may now resume your regular NFL programming.

Aimless, Saturday, 20 October 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago)

Aimless, you know in your heart that the national championship will come down to two SEC teams. Look, I just spent the last hour going over the Browns schedule with a friend and it's decided that they're making the playoffs. They're 1-5! No college team with that record at this point in the season could even go to a bowl.

Is ND's BCS ranking inflated? Maybe a little, but I think they have an okay shot at making a BCS bowl game.

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 21 October 2012 06:32 (twelve years ago)

notre dame would have to have a historic collapse to not make a BCS game this year

I think ND seems pretty awesome tbh

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 21 October 2012 07:01 (twelve years ago)

Our defense is great, but after the 2002 season (started 8-0, ended up in gator bowl, blown out by nc state) nothing would surprise me. The Rees/Golson QB combo and the associated head games scare me most.

overfaded aeropostale bootcuts I have owned (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 21 October 2012 08:19 (twelve years ago)

Aimless, you know in your heart that the national championship will come down to two SEC teams.

Sensible people everywhere call it the mythical national championship, sir, until such time as they institute a playoff system among all the conference champions. And, yes, my heart is sadly up to speed on that BCS foolery. And yet, I still look forward to Oregon playing Kansas State in a bowl game, but only because it should be a damn fun game to watch!

Aimless, Monday, 22 October 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago)

I feel bad for Gene Chizik because his mom died...and it's probably only another month or so before he is fired just two seasons removed from winning a BCS championship.

ND's defense was great, and Golson had a breakout game. I love Golson's personality bouncing back from his concussion. I just hope they can stay unbeaten until I see them at USC after Thanksgiving. The ND run defense vs. Lee should be a great matchup to watch. Alabama, K State, and Oregon all looked scary good as well. However the season ends, I'm enjoying a season of relevance after Rick Reilly's article in August (though we earned the criticism).

Fucking refs. I hate to be in a position where I am siding with the Vols, but a td was called back for a violation of the taunting rule when all the guy did was highstep into the endzone for the last five yards. No pointing the football at anyone. No wagging his finger. Nothing at all but a highstep.

They got a td on the very next play, yeah, but it should've stood the first time.

Fucking refs.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 10 November 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago)

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:33 (twelve years ago)

Gukbe's right. For the SEC to make the championship now, 2 of the remaining undefeateds have to drop at least one game.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:35 (twelve years ago)

which is what happened last year. it doesn't seem likely though.

Gukbe, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:36 (twelve years ago)

ND could certainly lose... the other two teams, idk

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:38 (twelve years ago)

Oregon and KSU don't look like they'll lose. After LSU, I thought Alabama was unbeatable, though.

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago)

Yeah ND has USC on the last day, I think.

Gukbe, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago)

I'm not too butthurt about this right now, tbh. I like ND, KSU and Oregon and would watch any combination of them play for the title. I'd still like to see Alabama or Georgia get in there, but that's homerism on my part.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago)

ND 0-2 vs. Boston College when ranked in top 5

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago)

Surely those must have been good years for BC? Because this BC team is TERRIBLE.

it's a satrap, judy (Hunt3r), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:41 (twelve years ago)

notre dame has boston college tonight and usc, oregon has stanford and oregon state and possibly usc in pac 12 championship, kansas state has texas and possibly oklahoma in big 12 championship game. would not be surprised to be alabama back in there.

balls, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah exactly, tho there's no big 12 championship anymore

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago)

woah really? haha smart move

balls, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:46 (twelve years ago)

The conference is too small for a championship game, I believe? Or maybe that was last season? I don't follow the Big 12 closely enough to know, tbh.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago)

wiki sez the NCAA only allows conference championship games for conferences with 12 or more teams. Big 12 only has 10, lol.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 November 2012 00:49 (twelve years ago)

o right not enough teams anyway, i forget there are only ten teams in the big 12 now

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 12 November 2012 03:13 (twelve years ago)

Something about the BCS tabulation system has had KSU over Oregon all along, and with both of them winning, there wasn't really any reason for Oregon to leapfrog.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 November 2012 03:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah k state schedule to date is stronger and the difference in human rankings isn't enough to overcome that

balls, Monday, 12 November 2012 08:53 (twelve years ago)

Has Gary "Mr. Objectivity" Danielson stopped crying since the Alabama loss?

Lundquist has got to say to himself every week: get me to basketball season and Bill Raftery STAT.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Monday, 12 November 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago)

What? Gary has such contempt for the Alabama program he can barely contain it during broadcasts. He may be more generous this year because Alabama has a qb who's not a stiff, but yeah...Gary is usually sneering during Alabama games. Why he's not assigned to the Big 12 or Pac 12 is beyond me.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 November 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago)

Human beings like a flashy offense. The computers understand that ND is the best in the country. We need to put our trust in the computers, people. Don't make the GOP mistake of putting your gut ahead of the computers.

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 12 November 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago)

This morning, the computer in my microwave told me that my breakfast burrito was 'done.' To my human senses, it tasted a little cold in the middle. But I know my human senses are biased. The computer said the burrito was done. I did not question it.

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 12 November 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago)

ND's offense is orange juice, and you have all just brushed your teeth. think about it.

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 12 November 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago)

Look at Oregon and KSU. Between their consistent play and high scoring offenses, it's hard to tell them apart. Why not give a 'protest vote' to ND?

Eccsame the Photon Guys (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 12 November 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago)

i like gary but he was pretty awful last week + obviously biased towards bama

also he still flogs the "can the spread work in the SEC?" bullshit tho he isn't alone on that front

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 November 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago)

It's entirely possible (though not probable) that ND could lose to USC and Oregon could get knocked off by either Stanford or Oregon State. Who might KSU lose to? Well, maybe Texas, but that's a long shot. If any two of these three teams loses a game, just one, the winner of the SEC championship advances into the nat'l title game. So who will it be?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 November 2012 20:44 (twelve years ago)

ND and Oregon lose. Alabama wins championship. Nick Saban forges all powerful crystal dolphin from his bcs trophies. Saban is defeated by Herbstreit (meanwhile Corso is exposed as Saban minion). Crystal dolphin is divided among the major conferences, who agree to never let Nick Saban happen to college football again.

^sorry, Fever, you're listening to a different game. Danielson is the probably second only to that idiot Paul Finebaum as the biggest Bama homer going.

After all these years of hearing about it, I just now saw the game footage where Woody Hayes punched that Clemson player in the throat in the '78 Gator Bowl. PIECE. OF. SHIT.

lol a friend of mine was at a pre-bowl game buffet with Woody as a kid (may have been the Clemson game) and said that Woody pushed him out of the way to get to the shrimp and promptly piled his plate with all that was left

"When I'd go to work, I'd never see anybody. Nobody ever comes to see me. Nobody ever calls. I'd have to think up somebody to call." This is a very bizarre description of NFL coaching for Moore and Saban to share.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 01:12 (twelve years ago)

There's no benefit for Saban in a return to the NFL. I honestly believe he prefers the college game, but on top of that he's making a shitload of $$$ and he's worshiped like a god in the state of Alabama. If he were to leave, I'd be confused. Not mad, but confused.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, he'd have to start from scratch at somewhere like the Cleveland, and this late in his career why would he do that? He's got the Alabama program the way he wants it, and he's attracting top recruits because of it.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 02:21 (twelve years ago)

I know Jerry Jones is in love with him, and the Dallas job is the only one I could conceivably see him leaving for. That's still a crazy longshot.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 03:42 (twelve years ago)

xpost yes, all of those reasons are better and more believable than "being an NFL coach is lonely." I agree that he'd be crazy to leave.

it has been fun. I hope that oregon doesn't run away with it in the second half. chip kelly will be in the nfl next year coaching against pete carroll and ?nick saban?

Binder, Binder & (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 4 January 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

The Oregon defense is going to be the key to this game. Nick Alioti is a tremendous defensive coordinator who usually figures out a way to do the job.

Aimless, Friday, 4 January 2013 03:19 (twelve years ago)

I hope Chip takes the Browns job, because they will either be the most amazing team in the league to watch or a spectacular disaster (as opposed to the unspectacular disaster they currently are).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 January 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

I'm guessing sabin has such a sweet perch at bama that he'll stick to it.

Aimless, Friday, 4 January 2013 03:31 (twelve years ago)

there is def something great bout an overrated ohio state team losing a national championship game but it's still not as good as an overrated notre dame team losing

iatee, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 04:52 (twelve years ago)

Actually I just looked at Ohio State's schedule this year, and yeah, they sucked. They didn't beat a single team ranked higher than #19. I retract my complaint. I don't know shit about college football.

Hahahaha. Sorry about nd, all kidding aside , they really kicked ass this year. Most teams would have quit in that second half-they showed real heart.
