LAST WEEK - a Wayne Fontes 9-7.

Chicago at Green Bay- This is a pretty big game for week 2, as if the Bears win they are 2 games up on the Packers. That's a nice lead to start the season. Bears got good rush against the Colts, but that's not the Packers. I'm leaning Green Bay, but I hope Chicago rolls them of course.
Kansas City at Buffalo- KC seemed to play better than expected and lost. Buffalo played much worse than expected and lost. I got to think the Bills are better than last week and I will take them to beat KC at home.
Cleveland at Cincinnati- Wow...the Bengals got rolled. Cleveland played the Eagles close, which I actually wasn't suprised by as Philly has seemed to play down to competition over the past few years. I'm taking the Bengals, but these games are always close.
Minnesota at Indianapolis- Hard to figure. I'm leaning Vikings but this is a close game. I have to wonder how bad Indy #93 is hurt.
New Orleans at Carolina- Both clubs were very dissapointing in week 1, I guess this is a pickem, but
I'm going with the Saints on rep.
Houston at Jacksonville- Jville played close and lost. I could see this being close, but Houston wants to be the big dog of the AFC South, they really can't lose this game. I'll go Texans.
Arizona at New England- Pats. C'mon...
Tampa Bay at NY Giants- Giants but I could see Tampa keeping it fugly enough to hang around.
Baltimore at Philadelphia- Ravens but like I said, Philly plays to who they are playing somewhat. I wouldn't be surprised everything clicks and they win.
Dallas at Seattle- Dallas didn't have the bad turnovers that usually deep six them, but they did have a lot of penalties. That said, they got a crap load of firepower on both sides of the ball and should win in Seattle. Going Cowboys, but it's often tough to get a win there.
Washington at St. Louis- Rams played Detroit tight and caused a lot of turnovers. Got to go with Washington based on putting down a better club, but it will be interesting to see how tight the Rams play them.
Oakland at Miami- This definitely won't go down as a "Sea of Hands" game. I guess Raiders as they don't have a rookie QB.
NY Jets at Pittsburgh- I don't care how well they played last week and how old the Steelers looked, I'm still taking Pittsburgh.
Tennessee at San Diego- This is a toss up. I guess Chargers at home.
Detroit at San Francisco- I'll take the Niners.
Denver at Atlanta- Denver looked pretty good and this is probably a decent matchup. Eh...give me Atlanta at home. I could see it going either way and I don't know much about Atlanta, as I rarely see them play.

8-8 last week, missed five out of six of the late and monday night games. bleh.

Chicago at Green Bay - Aaron is so so pissed y'all
Kansas City at Buffalo - I think the bills are better than they seem though i don't know how they could be worse
Cleveland at Cincinnati - bengals
Minnesota at Indianapolis - colts i guess?
New Orleans at Carolina - Saints, very very angrily
Houston at Jacksonville - Texans
Arizona at New England - Patriots, breaking that Cardinal spree
Tampa Bay at NY Giants - one that the giants can and should win
Baltimore at Philadelphia - Ravens but this has potential to be interesting
Dallas at Seattle - Squawk
Washington at St. Louis - I hope the redskins win every game and the nation needs to discuss why we still have a major sports team whose name is an ethnic slur
Oakland at Miami - Miami in something of an upset? really just needling vegrrrrl
NY Jets at Pittsburgh - i think that was a fluke game and am going steelers
Tennessee at San Diego - taking titans as a homer
Detroit at San Francisco - Niners looking fucking scary
Denver at Atlanta - I am impressed with peyty 2.0 but the falcons are likely to shut that shit down

from the new yorker, i love this image:

On March 19th, Ryan and Tannenbaum were having Mexican food at Newark airport, on their way to watch Coples' workout. Tannenbaum recounted, "On the third appetizer, I say, 'If Peyton signs at Denver, what do you think of Tebow?'" Ryan said that he found the idea "exciting." He'd once believed that Tebow was "judgmental," but they'd met at the Super Bowl and got along. "I think he could replace Brad Smith," Ryan said. The coach went off to buy a milkshake at Ben & Jerry's, and Tannebaum called Denver to express his interest in Tebow.

Until they're on, like, 95% of the county's cable systems, they shouldn't suck up so many games per season that people can't watch.

football-wise not much is happening. the bears had forte in for a couple series where cutler dropped back every play, under constant pressure, and somehow threw a screen passes to forte in triple coverage, and now they have put bush in and they're running the ball.

sometimes your guys deserve to get thrown under the bus! I don't think any QB with that kind of protection is going to get anything done.

frogbs, Friday, 14 September 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

I don't want to be all cap'n save a Cutler, but what went wrong last night is the same crap that has been wrong going back to Chapman. The Bears offensive line has been freaking awful for a few years now. That guy Webb is just especially bad, total waste of a pick. Carini also pretty much screwed up their one really good drive in the first half. You can get all the skills guys you want, if the QB gets hit like that, unless he can move like Vick, it ain't going to work.

They need to get another TE on the front line, get out of running the 3 WR set and put Cutler in the f-in shotgun and give the guy some freaking time to setup.

Tice is trying to run some really trad play action passing game, which could work if they can consistently run block, but all of his wideouts are like running 10-15 yard patterns and there is just not that time to run that kind of stuff.

earlnash, Friday, 14 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

the thing about Cutler, tho, is that he seems to have this weird neoconnish "if I just stand here I can will these dudes who haven't blocked for me all night to suddenly start blocking for me" attitude

Rodgers had issues with blocking too, and he started scrambling after a certain point

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know. I saw a lot of plays where Cutler had enough time to make a decision, and kept making bad ones.

and then when i think that, i'm reminded today that mike friggin tice is calling the plays over there.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 15 September 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

The dude is fxxxed. You go from Ron Turner who was Illinois offensive coordinator, to Mike Martz to Mike "Love Boat" Tice as your offensive coordinators.

earlnash, Saturday, 15 September 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

All that said, Cutler is by far STILL the best QB the Bears have probably had at least since Jimmy Mac.

The Bears fans and Ditka ran Jim Harbaugh out of town in the same kind of setup at the end of the Da' Bears run. Oh he can't play, he makes bad mistakes and the guy was getting sacked like 7 times a game when getting sacked 7 times a game really sucked.

All this has happened before...

earlnash, Saturday, 15 September 2012 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like every year the bears make some noise about "opening the offense up" and airing it out more but history seems to show that means throwing a deep ball sometime in the first half and then "well I suppose we should just throw a series of two yard passes the rest of the way"

omar little, Saturday, 15 September 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

Earl Bennett didn't help either on that one interception when he pretty much stood like a statue and let Woodson take the ball from him. I get Cutlers issues, but the sxxt gets deeper than that.

All that said, they looked this horrible at points last year then knocked out 4-5 wins straight, so this isn't over by any means. Bush was a pretty good pickup and they probably need someone that can go out and bust some heads between the guards. Hopefully Forte isn't out more than a month.

Green Bay's defense looked great early last year and couldn't stop anyone in December last year too.

Luck's doing a masterful job of sliding in the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield. On the few occasions that the Vikings have got pressure, he's been able to scramble for first downs. Vikings don't have a sack from their D line yet this year, after leading the league last season.

la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 17 September 2012 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

brady is okay. he will throw a couple more stray passes than he used to but he is still elite. the problems in the game today were playcalling and the O-line. the line is turning out to be the disaster that everyone predicted - the right side was so hopeless when vollmer was out. it is a huge deal that waters fucked off. on the playcalling they really need to stop boxing themselves in by playing woodhead on the 3rd down and running him a couple times to disastrous effect to 'keep the defense honest'. also, mcdaniels is a wild card - if he has an eye on getting back to a HC job and starts trying to show how clever he is, then i dunno.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 17 September 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

brady needs to get his deep ball back and stop ducking from phantom pressure.

line depth sucks ass right now and that hasn't been a problem in new england for years.

HANDZ UP WHO HAD THE CARDZ & CHARGERZ 2-0?!

I wonder what the over/under total points was on the Giants/Bucs - I guarantee it wasn't 75!

It's a weird ass league. I think it's because they are not allowed to hit at all at practice anymore and just run walk throughs and watch film.

I did watch the whole Vikings/Colts game, which was a pretty good game. Minnesota gave it away on dumb axx penalties. Really both Luck and Ponder looked pretty good at points and only had a few plays where they looked totally stupid. Ponder pretty much will only throw to Percy Harvin. This maybe out of necessity. Luck looked great at points, especially on the last drive of the half and game. That said, even getting such poor field position, the Colts offensive coordinator couldn't run a more conservative game plan and it nearly came back to haunt them. Colts really still can't run or stop the run for crap, but that's been an issue for more than a few years. Colt's punter McAfee deserves a bounty check or a game ball - as he totally bailed his team out a couple of times with punts including a total 73 yard in the air bomber when they were pinned on the 5 yeard line.

earlnash, Monday, 17 September 2012 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, the Colts' punting and the Vikings' penalties were the difference.

Ponder will probably do better when Jerome Simpson comes back from suspension, giving him at total of one (1) downfield target. Ponder's numbers are good this year but it's mostly Harvin running after the catch. The other problem with their offense today was that they couldn't pick up a first down on the ground. The Colts won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Luck looked fine, can't think of a bad decision except the attempt to scramble out of a sack that cost them 22 yards (and who can blame him after he ducked out of a safety and at least 2 other dead-to-rights sacks by that point). The caveat is that he was playing the worst pass defense in the league. You can pretty much guarantee that whoever plays the Vikings will have a career day. Not wise to bet on that trend continuing against a competent team, just look at how Gabbert did today.

the refs were really bad tho

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 September 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

The referring this week was so bad i cant even believe it. Ike Taylor got called for a pass interference call-he was like 3 feet away from the guy the whole play. And the Rams-Skins game was even worse, Goodell should be forced to watch that with his eyeballs forced open over and over CLockwork Orange style until a settlement with the real refs is reached.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Monday, 17 September 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

sadly outside of the real standout stuff like the 4 timeout game or the double 2-minute warning most of these are mistakes that the real refs make, too

frogbs, Monday, 17 September 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

The point is that real refs make them less often, and that they're more likely to actually know the rulebook. It's not like the replacements are coming up with new kinds of mistakes, are trailblazers in mistakery.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 September 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

i think he's done it like in 4 of his last 10 starts, so he's getting closer.

since 1970, the record of visiting teams -4 on to's is 18-545-2.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

they'll prob make the playoffs bcuz peyton is peyton but i'm not really sold on them as super bowl contenders

that bay-bay TD catch was fucking amazing tho

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

broncos schedule is generally v. tough outside the conference- pitt, atl, houston, ne, ravens- thats 5 of the top 10 of current power rankings? plus saints, cincy and panthers. they could easily miss the playoffs.

otoh, browns and 2x raiders.

Veg are you ready for the Terrell Pryor era or are you okay with Palmer

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

I'm okay with Palmer. I'm not really the 'braying for the bench' type

I feel like pass protection is going to be a problem all year, so having more mobility out of the QB would be good, especially since Palmer strikes me as very skittish when he doesn't have a perfect pocket. But Pryor is probably not the guy to do it. Maybe even Leinert would be better?

Palmer's deep throws are very nice looking when they're on target, tho

Palmer to Moore is a thing of beauty when they can make it happen -- but yeah protection is a def problem
