dolphins seem to do well against the jets in the rex era. feels like a push to me - 8-6 to whoever gets the safety.

best case scenario for new england is that it is one of the many games where baltimore is better but the pats win anyway. just as likely it is the 2010 playoff game.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

with the positive press for the arizona D the eagles will prob put up 50 on them

texans @ broncos will be very interesting in terms of figuring where those teams are.

95% chance new orleans gets a gimme to help right the ship; 5% chance hilarity

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not going to predict Cardinals/Eagles in any way. Seems like a classic "Eagles are gonna destroy here/why are the Eagles sucking so bad/why did the Cardinals just throw this away" game

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

I would like to continue seeing New Orleans lose close ones for as long as possible. I used to like that team, and Drew Brees, but now it's more fun to hate them.

instead of calling who is gonna win (bc i'm terrible at that) i'm just going to call what games i'd like to catch

New York Giants @ Carolina Panthers > i still haven't seen Cam but i just can't be bothered
Tampa Bay Bucs @ Dallas Cowboys > i hope the boys lose but i have no other interest in this game
Cincinnati Bengals @ Washington Redskins > rg3 rg3! i got to see him throw a long bomb for a td last week and that was enough. i'll see them when they play philly
Kansas City Chiefs @ New Orleans Saints > uninterested
St. Louis Rams @ Chicago Bears > eh, will watch if nothing better on
New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins > ok - this is my pick of the week. if jets are losing by halftime and sanchez is lost out there, i say it's TEBOWTIME
San Francisco 49ers @ Minnesota Vikings > nope
Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts > nope -well, maybe. i still haven't seen andrew luck play a game.
Detroit Lions @ Tennessee Titans > mmmnope
Buffalo Bills @ Cleveland Browns > nope
Philadelphia Eagles @ Arizona Cardinals > IGGLES! IGGLES! IGGLES! v. Kolb! -- will be watching
Atlanta Falcons @ San Diego Chargers > nope
Houston Texans @ Denver Broncos > no way suddenly good texans translate into post season success, right? maybe it will! arian foster is awesome. would watch.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Oakland Raiders > i'll root for the raiders
New England Patriots @ Baltimore Ravens > i'd watch this. i hope the ravens bounce back + the pats start freaking the fuck out
Green Bay Packers @ Seattle Seahawks > ok, i'd also watch this

Week 2 - A Norv Turnerish 8-8, for season 17-15

New York Giants @ Carolina Panthers- It's like ALLMANNING ALL THE TIME on the big national TV games these days. I think with all the injuries to the Giants, I'm leaning Panthers but close.

Tampa Bay Bucs @ Dallas Cowboys- I got to think Dallas, but it's the Cowboys they can play stupid enough at times to lose to anyone and it's obvious the Bucs are at least playing to the end.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Washington Redskins- Who knows really, I guess Washington at home, but at this point I can't tell how good or bad either team might be. I guess beating the Saints is better than the Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs @ New Orleans Saints- I'm going Saints, but they of course seem to be a big mess.

St. Louis Rams @ Chicago Bears- This is kind of an intersting matchup. I'm taking the Bears but I think possibly a suprisingly good matchup.

New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins- Oh hell, again who knows. I have no idea how Vegas picks these things these days, everyone seems to suck. I guess Dolphins as I think the Jets never have much luck in Miami.

San Francisco 49ers @ Minnesota Vikings- 49ers seem to be the elite exception to the malaise.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts- I'll take the Colts in a close one.

Detroit Lions @ Tennessee Titans- Neither of these clubs seem to be anywhere near as good as you thought they might be. I figure Lions as they don't have the question at Qb. It's week 3, at some point Hasselbeck has to be looked at as the option, if nothing else as a spell. Locker has played like junk first two weeks. Kinda depends on where Munchak feels on his job and how quick they got to win. I kind of figured them to have some decent talent all around. Lions never did play as well after Best went down and Suh flamed out on TV. They got to the playoffs, but they don't seem to have a whole lot of momentum. THey need a running game.

Buffalo Bills @ Cleveland Browns- Somebody's got to win. I'll go Bills.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Arizona Cardinals- I figure Eagles. Cardz go 3-0 beating Philly and NE, that's kinda impressive.

Atlanta Falcons @ San Diego Chargers- Falcons D looks good, but their offense for the talk of all the speed on the outside seems kind of dull without a whole lot of big play in them. I'm going nuts and taking the Chargers.

Houston Texans @ Denver Broncos- Kinda weird that there are all these articles on how Manning is washed up after last game, did they watch the second half? They went from a Moses on the mount Tebow six play running attack to trying to run the Starship Enterprise, there are going to be 'some' mistakes. Texans should win, they got more talent, but I figure this is a close game.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Oakland Raiders- Steelers

New England Patriots @ Baltimore Ravens- I'm taking Pats and the Ravens will whine about the refs.

Green Bay Packers @ Seattle Seahawks- Packers but an interesting matchup.

i don't know if u guys have noticed this, but philly blogs have been running some incredible analyses of iggles games based on the release of the all-22 film. lots of really incisive, insightful observations that have been a joy to read. i hope sometime in the future they actually release the tape to the broader population (or at least make it available at an affordable personal rate) - bc i'd love to watch a game reel with someone actually narrating what is happening on the field.

Decent theory, but their running game is probably the least important contributor to their recent success.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

There was a QB in the early-to-mid 2000s that had a decent start to his career and fooled many into (temporarily) believing he was a franchise player. Only he eventually evolved into a turnover machine who just didn't have what it takes to consistently lead a team to victory. Said QB was relegated to the bench and mop-up duty after his seventh season. Today, there is an active QB currently in his seventh season as a starter, yet he's nowhere close to sniffing the bench or being pegged as a flop. Many believe that he could be a starter for a Super Bowl winning caliber team

QB #1: 83 starts; 45-38 record; 62.7% career completion percentage; 119 TDs; 99 INTs; 19,440 career yards; 7.0 YPA; 82.7 QB rating

QB #2: 80 starts; 42-38 record; 60.9% career completion percentage; 120 TDs; 91 INTs; 18,742 career yards; 7.3 YPA; 83.9 QB rating.

Jay Cutler is QB2. Who is QB1 you may ask? Brian F-ing Griese.

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 September 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

if anything it should tell you that MAYBE brian griese was beter than people remember

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 September 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

"Jay Cutler is QB2. Who is QB1 you may ask? Brian F-ing Griese."

Griese never had Cutlers arm and he was QB on a club that had a very good offensive line. Shanahan gave up on him as they thought he was the weak link and brought in Plummer.

Cutler isn't great, but he obviously is not the worst part of the Bears offense and that is the same problem they have had for the past few years, the offensive line and the fact they keep changing the freaking offense year after year. Hard to get some continuity and rhythm to what you are doing if you change the playbook over and over.

earlnash, Saturday, 22 September 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Jay cutler strikes me as maybe a Jeff George type, cf a guy who will put together some much better statistical years once his head catches up to his skills. I hope he's better than that, though I don't mean it as a total insult. George had some fine years at the end of his career when he was a gun for hire.

omar little, Saturday, 22 September 2012 05:14 (thirteen years ago)

George: 57.9%, 27602 yards, 154 TD, 113 INT, 80.4 rating
Cutler: 60.9%, 18742, yards 120 TD, 91 INT, 83.9 rating

Pretty similar so far. Cutler's a bit better obviously, but on the other hand the game is more QB friendly now so maybe not.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Saturday, 22 September 2012 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

that year George had with Oakland was so crazy. 29 touchdowns to 9 interceptions and 3900 yards. Too bad the defense stunk.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 22 September 2012 07:25 (thirteen years ago)

Kevin Kolb has a bit of a problem. His wife, Whitney, is nearly 38 weeks pregnant. She is so close to giving birth to the couple’s third daughter that Kevin asked Whitney to postpone Friday’s doctor’s appointment until Monday, he said, to avoid accelerating the process.

Kolb has an important football game to play Sunday, one that’s not about revenge against the team that traded him or anything superficial like that. But it is a meaningful game, for him and the 2-0 Cardinals. It is another chance for Kolb, who is expected to start with John Skelton nursing a sprained ankle, to make a positive impression. It is a chance to improve to 3-0. And yes, all things being equal, he would like to beat the Philadelphia Eagles.

But if things start happening and baby girl No. 3 won’t wait, “I’m not going to miss the birth of my child,” Kolb said. “If it happened Sunday morning, I’m not missing it.”

Cardz defense looks pretty good. Kolb throwing quite well too. Eagles are just hard to figure.

At least from the highlights, that Ponder can really run. Dude seemed to accelerate past the db's on that long run.

The refs seemed to loose it at the end of the Bengals/Washington game, not knowing where to spot the ball or what to do on the clock after the penalty. LOLs at the 3rd and 45 (for real) that Wash. had on the last play of the game.

Mordy, Sunday, 23 September 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

Philly always seems to always play to their opponent. They will have these crazy high powered offense games against good teams, then seemingly lose their lunch money against the middling clubs or tie a bad Bengals club. Although at this point, might have to say the Cardz are not a middling club, they might actually be decent. They hold on and have the Pats and Eagles as wins in back to back weeks, that's a pretty good accomplishment over the past decade or so.

Josh Freeman played better down the stretch. I swear the stat line went across the bottom scroll at one point and the guy was like (3-20). He finished like (10-28) 110 yrds 1 td 1 int 45.3 QB rating.

steelers starting at deep shortstop

hail dayton (brownie), Sunday, 23 September 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

in fact, iirc, they brought out that particular game-ending combo against the pats in the superbowl

Mordy, Sunday, 23 September 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

Basically, refs allowed harbaugh to call this third timeout....THEN throw a challenge flag...then overrule the fumble recovery....award ball to 49ers.....THEN give them their 3rd timeout BACK....this scenario occurred twice, giving the 49ers five time outs in the last minutes of game

jalapeno kloppers (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 23 September 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

The obv thing being he couldn't make either challenge in the first place because he had no timeouts when he called them

I am so sick of this replacement official BS you guys

I know the regular refs screw up sometimes but as a fan I kind of accept there are some mistakes. however at this point it just seems out of control to where when there's a close game, you figure what's the point because there were enough blown calls to have screwed with the outcome somehow

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 24 September 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

from the replays it was a bad hit but I am not sure if the tackle couldve pulled out of it, dhb didnt see him at all? also he took a mighty couple of bounces off the ground

not excusing the hit but in this rare case I have no ill will to steelers

the steelers player stayed on the field the whole time, even after the rest of his team was on the sideline

the whole thing was v sad

most likely DHB just had a concussion. He had a similarly scary concussion last year (full neck brace, carted off) and came back strong so I'm hopeful.

I'm pretty surprised to see there's been no progress whatsoever on the real officials and am kind of wondering what it's going to take at this point. players don't respect them, coaches definitely don't respect them, fans don't respect them, even Chris Collinsworth doesn't respect them and it's only a matter of time before something big happens on a national stage (even bigger than the debacle that was last night's Ravens/Pats game). I know they're trying their best out there and that the real refs screw up their fair share too but reffing is hard, I dunno what Godell thought was going to happen here. Can you imagine if these guys are out there for the Super Bowl??

hail dayton (brownie), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno what Godell thought was going to happen here.

i think that he probably didn't expect them to be this bad. i think he also still expects that the power of the NFL brand will win out, but i think we're on the verge of an entire week here where the dominant storyline in the league is about shitty scab officiating. also i think he expected that public opinion would be that the refs are assholes for holding out, but i don't think that's been the case at all.

so in general he's just bet wrong across the board. that said, i'm not sure what the breaking point is here because if all the NFL cares about is money (which it does) then none of this matters. people aren't going to boycott the games. but i feel like goodell has to be feeling some pressure now, and that the refs feel a bit better about striking for a few more weeks if public opinion continues the way it is now.

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

it's interesting... to me this is a crucial week. the refs are in a position of power right now after this week, but all it takes for that to flip is a relatively quiet week of officiating or a week where something happens on the field that will overshadow the scab talk. if the scabs are okay this week, maybe goodell feels better about holding out for the rest of the season. then again, if they're as bad this week as they were on sunday, the NFL may have no choice but to cave. it's def a gamble by all parties to not hammer something out.

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

the ravens offense was in park until that PI call on a 3 yard crossing route saved them from another 3 and out and gave them their first 1st down at 13-0, from which they went on to score. the bogus defensive holding calls were on 2 of their other scoring drives, but that first dumb penalty was a total momentum changer.

Pat's schedule from here out, even if they lose to SF & Houston and a couple others, that is still like 10-6. I just don't see the Jets, Bills or Dolphins sweeping them and even beating them at home will be a stretch. NE seems to have issues in Miami and has on and off for years.

Buffalo Bills @ Buffalo (2-1)
Denver Broncos vs Denver (1-2)
Seattle Seahawks @ Seattle (1-1)
New York Jets vs NY Jets (2-1)

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:09 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah like I get that possession can't be overturned, and you can't be like "Upon further review, Golden Tate committed like mega-Pass-Interference, 10 yard penalty and the game is over", so I get that there wasn't really any actual grounds for overturning things, but...I mean, I've never actually had the Packers lose a game where I felt like they didn't actually lose the game. I mean I don't imagine there would be a scenario where the NFL would just hold a press conference tomorrow and say "Yeah, our bad, real refs are back next week and the Packers are credited with the win" but at the same time, it seems kind of impossible that the Packers do not get to win that game that they actually just won, basically.

Another really bad call was that roughing the QB on GB against Wilson early in the 4th quarter. Kevin Greene started doing a sack dance on the sideline until he saw the flag.

This is the second year in a row that the level of play is all out of wack, last year no training camp so everyone could score at will. This year, you got crappy refs, so every game is suspect.

Article I saw on-line about the replacement officials stated that Vegas was pretty much factoring it as as a +3 points for the home team in any line.

@Deadspin: The Lingerie Football League fired current NFL crews because of incompetence.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:11 (thirteen years ago)

"Because of the LFL's perception it is that much more critical for us to hire officiating crews that are competent, not only for the credibility of our game but to keep our athletes safer. Due to several on-field incompetent officiating we chose to part ways with with a couple crews which apparently are now officiating in the NFL. We have a lot of respect for our officials but we felt the officiating was not in line with our expectations.

We have not made public comment to date because we felt it was not our place to do so. However in light of tonight's event, we felt it was only fair that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games."
