frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Monday, 19 November 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

hes 6th in dyar and 9th in dvoa this year fwiw

turds (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 19 November 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

he has not his best this year but i think he's obviously a really good QB... probably permanently in that second level after brady/rodgers/peyton etc

the lions on the other hand are just not that good at all... they need to figure out what the problem is over there

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

i think the main reason why their offense has underwhelmed so much this year is bcuz they put too much on stafford's shoulders. he's good but he's not, like, on that aforementioned brady/rodgers/peyton level where the lions can essentially be like "we're gonna put no emphasis on our run game whatsoever, we'll let our QB wing the ball around all game to a bunch of WRs who may or may not be incredibly random and we're still gonna have an elite offense"

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I mean that's basically it, I do think they're playing him like an elite QB when he's really not and it results in games like this where he misses wide open guys or has to rely too much on jump balls to Megatron (which generally seem to work out). the Lions in general are really not there yet, you don't have to be Bill Barnwell to know that a team that built a 10-6 record on ridiculous double-digit 4th quarter comebacks is going to regress some. they're not beating the crap out of anyone this year like they did last year either. Stafford plays at elite level from time to time but as everyone's seeming to notice now he only really seems to bring it in the 4th when he's needed the most, probably because he comes out so flat, every game.

one thing I don't understand is why the Packers ran so much against them. I get that the Packers are desperately trying to get their run game going but they haven't had a run game in forever and the Lions are a great team to throw against, I dunno wtf Buck and Troy were talking about saying that the Lions pass defense was elite or whatever, they give up more ridiculous 50+ yard TD plays than anyone.

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

i said last year that the Lions 10-6 record and playoff appearance was probably their peak, they just never seemed like real "up and comers"; they were more like that weird Bengals team that somehow went 6-0 in their division and got demolished in the playoffs, then had to blow everything up the next year

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

Stafford is basically Cutler 2 I think.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 19 November 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

yeah. i mean that's not a terrible thing. the bears have been one of the best teams in the NFC for three years running.

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say Cutler is better as a whole, but he is a bit older, but yes I think Cutler is pretty much Stafford's ceiling, not a bad thing really. Also worth mentioning that outside of Brandon Marshall, Cutler rarely had an elite receiver to work with, while Staff's had Megatron his whole career, and tbh you don't even need to be that accurate with a receiver like him. I dunno, the Lions are a pretty tough team to figure out, their running game has sucked since Jahvid Best went out (and sucked long before that, too) while their defense/special teams alternate between tough physical play and complete mental lapses, for example giving up five 70+ yard scoring plays to the Tennessee Titans. I do think Schwartz is at least a decent coach but the whole team just seems so undisciplined and unlikeable, Stafford makes that "where's the flag" face after every damn incompletion or every time he's touched, while his team seems to be coached to hold and facemask whenever they think they can get away with it, I dunno why they don't get flagged more than they do. But yeah they really don't seem "one piece away" from anything, and it's entirely likely they finish this season out 5-11 or 6-10 and wanting to blow everything up again, because the tough part of their schedule started yesterday, and it's a doozy.

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

so. tired. (Hunt3r), Monday, 19 November 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think cutler is stafford's ceiling considering a "down" year for him (this year) is at worst as good as jay cutler. stafford's ceiling is, like, drew brees or something.

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

oh come on

chief beef (k3vin k.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

what? the guy is 24 years old and coming off a year where he threw for 5,000+ yards, 40+ TDs & completed over 60 percent of his passes. jay cutler's best season is NOWHERE near that. his "ceiling" (i.e. the best possible player he could be) is someone who is a top 3 QB in the NFL who threatens single-season all-time passing records. i'm not saying he will be that, but it's definitely possible for him to hit that if he gets better and the talent around him gets better.

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

stafford's 2011 season is right up there w/ the best of brees' years as a saint. when brees was 24 he threw 11 TDs & 15 INTs for the chargers.

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

yeah my bad i missed "ceiling", probably cuz you left brees out of the elite tier

chief beef (k3vin k.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

well Stafford did have 663 pass attempts that season. Cutler's only had one year even near that (616) and his raw stats look an awful lot like Stafford's. this is pretty much a product of your team always seeming to be in a hole (having the best receiver in the game doesn't hurt either). he still makes the same mistakes over and over. I suppose my use of the word "ceiling" is pretty liberal here but unless he really is being held back by bad coaching or receivers who can't get on the same page I'm not sure where he's going to improve. Cutler on the other hand is a guy I've always maintained has been held back by playing under bad offensive systems with bad receivers; just watch how bad the Bears do without him.

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

mcgahee mcl, broncos out of the real picture imo.

he's only out 6-8 which means he could return for the playoffs, and Denver's basically locked up a spot already

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

Also, Peyton usually went deep into the playoffs without any running backs in Indy.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 November 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

it's not necessarily that stafford is getting held back by bad coaching or receivers (tho maybe it is!). it's more just that players continue to improve over time... i don't think most (if any?) quarterbacks are as good as they'll be as they are at 24 (except maybe like vince young or something).

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder if stafford is more of a culpepper type than a brees type, i could see him going one way or another. regardless he was an awful first round pick for me!

sug ones (omar little), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

would be interesting to see what would happen if you switched Cutler and Stafford, my hunch (obviously) is that Cutler would start putting up huge numbers while Stafford has to grind out a bunch of 13-10 games, but I guess we'll never know

frogbs, Monday, 19 November 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i mean you might be right. that says more about cutler than it does stafford tho imo

stafford was a great pick especially considering that the top 10 of the 09 draft was a rotting nuclear waste plant (jason smith! tyson jackson! aaron curry! mark sanchez! <-- these were the next four picks directly after stafford) & depending on how you feel about various players (orakpo, clay matthews, mike wallace, lesean, percy) you could definitely put stafford in the top 2 or 3 players out of that draft

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Cutler's third season, where he had 4,526 yards, 62.3% season compares pretty favorably with Stafford's 5,038 yard, 63.5% season. They both have it in them to sling the ball around a lot, and they both are very susceptible to interceptions. But Stafford's 40+ TDs last year was Breesian for sure. Cutler had never had more than 30 in a season.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 19 November 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

Brees has completed ~70% in his last three years so I wouldn't say it's *quite* there but I see what you're saying. That said I'd say Stafford in 2011 found himself in a lot more situations where they absolutely had to throw; after all they did wind up with an NFL record amount of double-digit comeback victories. Also, look at how much of that was from Megatron: 1681 yards, 16 touchdowns.

I've seen the Steelers play a few times this year. Receiver isn't one of the most pressing problem areas they have. This? Solves nothing.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 November 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

they don't have a big WR? that's the only thing i can think of

qb controversy?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

i can't imagine there would be any reason for a qb controversy, niners were winning with smith. however on espn there will be one, for sure.

also, buzzfeed should get on this: sad tweets from the official accounts of teams that are losing horribly

chicago o line is a disaster

(alternatively, “Respec’”) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 06:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I mean that's basically it, I do think they're playing him like an elite QB when he's really not and it results in games like this where he misses wide open guys or has to rely too much on jump balls to Megatron (which generally seem to work out). the Lions in general are really not there yet, you don't have to be Bill Barnwell to know that a team that built a 10-6 record on ridiculous double-digit 4th quarter comebacks is going to regress some. they're not beating the crap out of anyone this year like they did last year either. Stafford plays at elite level from time to time but as everyone's seeming to notice now he only really seems to bring it in the 4th when he's needed the most, probably because he comes out so flat, every game.

one thing I don't understand is why the Packers ran so much against them. I get that the Packers are desperately trying to get their run game going but they haven't had a run game in forever and the Lions are a great team to throw against, I dunno wtf Buck and Troy were talking about saying that the Lions pass defense was elite or whatever, they give up more ridiculous 50+ yard TD plays than anyone.

i feel like you're trolling me specifically by using 'bill barnwell' as shorthand for 'guy who knows what hes talking about'

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 06:38 (thirteen years ago)

was thinking more as "a guy who talks about regression a lot" but I think in general he does know what he's talking about, what's your problem with him?

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

it's kind of hilarious to see that the Bears O line is simply terrible and not passive-aggressively letting people pummel Cutler

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

The fact that Ed Reed got suspended for a game is a total farce.

@RapSheet
Wow. Ted Cottrell lifts Ed Reed's suspension, fines him just $50,000 fine. Guess that's why there is an appeals process.

Farce averted!

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

Justice for Ed Reed.

I was so stunned by the highlights of the Bears o-Line gettin pummeled. Crazy to see multiple linemen getting bowled over like that.

it's the bears

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago)

yeah. i mean he's not very good but they've also played 2 of the best defenses in the NFL & w/o jeffery their WR looks really bad again
