Kaepernick named the starter for this week; feel bad for Alex Smith (as much as you can feel for a #1 overall pick that is) but he definitely makes the 49ers way more exciting to watch so I am excited to see what the guy can do.

in thinking about this, there's a few things i think need to be asked:

1. if tony romo commits suicide in front of jason garrett and jerry jones, do the cowboys play on sunday?
2. if clay matthews commits suicide in front of mike mccarthy, do the packers play on sunday?
3. does the NFL go on at all in either situation?

you can kind of see what i'm getting at here, but i can't shake the sense that the NFL feels like it can kind of sweep this under the rug because, hey, it's just some linebacker from the chiefs that no one has ever heard of. maybe i'm wrong, i don't know -- but i don't really feel like the NFL deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Jets extend Mark Sanchez's contract
Updated: March 12, 2012, 1:10 PM ET
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

The New York Jets ended months of Peyton Manning speculation Friday night with an emphatic statement, announcing a three-year contract extension for incumbent Mark Sanchez.

The Jets extended Sanchez after a season in which they openly admitted they weren't pleased with his rate of development. The announcement came only hours after they were eliminated from the Manning sweepstakes.

The deal includes $20.5 million in guarantees for 2012 and 2013 and $40.5 million in "new" money, bringing his total over five years to $58.25 million, according to sources. He can make an additional $10 million in escalators.

The $58.25 million gives Sanchez the seventh-highest financial package among NFL quarterbacks, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

remember before the season when Rex was like "you know, if in 10 or 15 years they want to make a change at head coach I will understand"

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 December 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago)

“I know I’m a great coach, and what makes me a great coach is the guys that coach with me and the guys that play for me,” Ryan said. “It’s hard for me to look at myself as not being successful. I don’t see that as a possibility. One day, it might be 10 years from now or 15 years from now when Woody Johnson wants to go in a different direction, and that’s fine.”

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 2 December 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago)

i'm still a rex person btw... dude can coach, that roster is complete garbage tho esp w/ revis and holmes hurt. if i was a jets fan tho i would hope that he maybe learned that intentionally running the team like a free-for-all circus isn't the greatest idea.

I don't like Costas, but I like that he said it, because someone needed to (apparently). Even though he did try to distance himself from the statement by quoting someone else.

Supposedly he's also considering the Browns!

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I think he'd sooner wind up in Philly if this is a move he's truly considering.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 December 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago)

xps They fired their last coach after his first year. Seems like the norm for them.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 December 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago)

(Furthermore, Hue had a better w-l record than Dennis Allen currently does, and last year's Raiders improved as the season went on. This year's Raiders get worse.)

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 December 2012 21:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah Allen has been a disaster:

-replaced the o-line coach and the special teams coach, both units went from good to bad

-hired an OC (knapp) that installed the zone blocking scheme. McFadden all of a sudden sucks again.

-brings on mike brisiel at knapp's urging, who has been awful

-supposedly a defensive guru, defense is worse than at any point in the Al Davis era

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago)

oh i agree that he's been a disaster but i think it would be highly unusual -- if not unprecedented -- for a GM to fire his first ever coaching hire after one season

J0rdan S., Monday, 3 December 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago)

Yeah and McKenzie does not strike me as a guy who would make a change this quickly, especially given that he gave Allen a roster of castoffs to work with. But the gameplanning could use a lot of work.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 3 December 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago)

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago)

since you all doing some kind of crazy fantasy football here, i just gotta say my fantasy is that some team figures out how to score out of the victory formation against tampa. soon. not in anger, but for the sheer joy of it.

Hunt3r, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago)

I watched it but I got to say, I still can't believe the Colts won on Sunday. Andrew Luck is really something different. As yet, I can't compare him to really any one guy. I think he is closer to Rofflesberger in some ways than Peyty. Luck is big mf'ing Qb. There was one play where he stepped out and kind of tossed Suh a bit to the side then moved over and bounced off Fairly and then threw a spiral downfield for like 20-25 yards. Only QBs of the past few years I seen do that kind of manuever are Big Ben and McNair. Then when he is going to throw the ball, he's looking downfield - it isn't a bunch of check downs, he's putting some air under the ball and beating teams on long pass plays.

I guess the Big Ben comparison is somewhat valid, as the Colts with Bruce Arian are running a version of that offense they ran in Pittsburgh - although some of the formations with the 2 - TE sets might be based on some of the stuff that Stanford ran.

The Colts get a bit better on the offensive line and get a back that can really do damage in the passing game, they are going to be the best offense in football next year. They are already #3 in scoring offense now.

"They should really go to Leinert or Pryor at this point of the season imo just to see what they have."

I don't see it happening though, as really Carson Palmer isn't their problem. The Raiders defense is just awful.

earlnash, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:19 (twelve years ago)

Even if Carson isn't the problem, what would it hurt?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:33 (twelve years ago)

yeah I don't get it. They claimed they had a package of plays for Pryor but never got around to them on Sunday

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:34 (twelve years ago)

even if the Raiders were kicking ass I'd like to see them work Pryor in on gadget plays

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:35 (twelve years ago)

it can't be any worse

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago)

"Even if Carson isn't the problem, what would it hurt?"

I'd file it under trying to fix something that isn't broken. Raiders did overpay for Palmer. You pull him, the guy is going to flip and you create a QB controversy in the fanbase and even make things worse.

I wouldn't do it.

I'd be really surprised if Terrell Pryor would be worth anything at Qb. What I saw of the guy at Ohio State, the guy was a heck of an athlete, but not much of a 'passer'. I'm kind of surprised they kept him at Qb. The guy's got the speed and size to be a pretty good WR.

earlnash, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago)

Al Davis was a big fan of changing positions with athletic dudes, and he usually only liked QBs with rocket arms. I wonder if he wanted him to be a WR or TE.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:54 (twelve years ago)

I'd file it under trying to fix something that isn't broken. Raiders did overpay for Palmer. You pull him, the guy is going to flip and you create a QB controversy in the fanbase and even make things worse.

I guess something horrible could happen like maybe he would quit on the team and refuse to play, and then they could trade him for two number one picks.

It is pretty bad when the Bengals grift you.

I'm kind of surprised Harbaugh's time as QB in Chicago under Ditka isn't getting talked about more with the whole Niner QB controversy. Being die hard Bear fan and one of my room mates was a Viking fan, so I saw this happen on TV at the time and had to eat crow. After this, Harbaugh pretty much became the brunt of the Bear's problems as the aging team of the 80s fell apart. Led to Harbaugh being run out of town and him having some success in some points (and injuries) in San Diego and later Indianapolis.
