lol I was just looking back at this season's thread titles and realized I'd already forgotten about the replacement refs. That shit seems like it was three seasons ago.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 03:20 (twelve years ago)

I'm going to the Falcons-Giants game. Huge game for both teams, Falcons for respect, Giants to actually make the playoffs. Cant wait.

This is a great week of football, by the way. Killer games abound.

god damnit Goodell

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8743130/nfl-discuss-expanding-playoff-field-roger-goodell-says

do we really want 16 playoff teams? we're already in a world where the 7-9 Seahawks can win a playoff game. let's turn this into the NBA where top-tier teams don't even have to try!

frogbs, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:31 (twelve years ago)

Drew Brees apparently nuked him again today

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago)

please can someone just murder goodell and 10 or 15 owners

call all destroyer, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago)

there is clearly just constant pressure from some of the owners who are determined to eviscerate the golden goose. there is definitely a rich business guy mentality of 'i don't mind if we all get less overall as long as i get a bigger share of it' - preferring 2 dollars out of 5 over 5 dollars out of 50

there's a lot of things to consider but to say it's an "obvious" punt is just to ignore all the statistical evidence that says you should go for it on 4th down in most circumstances past your own 20

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:04 (twelve years ago)

if they convert there they have it in FG range with a timeout and a first down, the chances of them winning are way above 50% in that situation

when the cowboys had the ball on fourth down, win expectancy was slightly in pit's favor (.51 on the win expectancy scale). when the steelers took over the ball, it bumped minimally in pit's favor (.52 on the win expectancy scale). when the game went into overtime, win expectancy swung way back in dallas' favor (.39 on the win expectancy scale).

but please tell me more about "stats"

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 01:10 (twelve years ago)

what happens to the win expectancy if they convert on 4th?

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:12 (twelve years ago)

you're just ignoring:

Dallas' chances of converting on 4th
Dallas' win probability if they don't convert

and lol at the win probability going down for Dallas but that being nbd

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago)

well considering that they still would've needed another first down to have a comfortable look at the FG, i would bet that it would have bumped less in their favor than it would in pitt's favor had dallas turned it over on downs

so basically it was even money based on these numbers, except wtf is this when the game went into overtime, win expectancy swung way back in dallas' favor (.39 on the win expectancy scale).

lag∞n, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago)

Dallas has a 61-39 edge in overtime somehow, but on 4th and 4 they're fucked

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago)

my point is just that unless they got 15+ yards on fourth down, they still would've needed to get another first down after that to have a comfortable field goal attempt. the reward of merely gaining the first down did not outweigh the risk of not getting that. and the win expectancy chart bears that out.

games are never 50-50 to start... home teams are always given a slight edge afaik. i'm not a win expectancy guru so i can't totally explain why it was 60/40 boys at the start of OT and i'm sure there are other factors going into that calculation besides that.

gaining the first down pretty much nukes any chance of the Steelers winning in regulation and they have 30 seconds and a timeout to get into better field goal range

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 01:23 (twelve years ago)

right but it doesn't guarantee them a win. the flip side is they turn it over on downs and roethlisberger has to complete two passes for a victory.

i think that with the new overtime rules it made sense to play it safe... and if dallas was 10 yards further up on the field i would agree w/ you.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 17 December 2012 02:00 (twelve years ago)

brady threw deep for welker and welker slowed up a bit while signaling to the official that he'd been held on the play (maybe he had idk) which allowed rogers to catch it pretty easily

and return it about 50 yards, the last guy before he got to the endzone was brady who managed to take him down near the 5

and get 0 points off it

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 17 December 2012 02:22 (twelve years ago)

interesting on that 2nd down play. niners only rushed 3 and put 4 LBs with just a few yard spacing as a kind of shield against a short/intermediate pass over the middle. kind of an extreme version of the way Ds have been effective against NE in recent years, no fear of the long pass - real shame that stallworth got hurt. SF got lucky with no PI call tho.

i was kind of waiting for an interception from kaepernick. he has been making some bold throws with the air of a young player who hasn't been stung enough to think twice yet. NE making him look better than he probably is, but i am still impressed. niners look pretty damn good all over.

Dont know about the lovability, but he's sure a lot more incompetent.

When Tebow went in Gruden specifically said "I'd like to see Tebow throw some". Then two plays later he was criticizing the fact he was in there. Strange.

Sanchez should ride pine the remaining two games.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 14:59 (twelve years ago)

i am fascinated to see what they do with sanchez now. all that money tied up for next year, but they have to get rid of him. how can they start another season with him on the roster. no one will pick up that check of course, but you know someone will take him when he's available for cheap - just being a regular starter somewhere seems to guarantee you one more try somewhere else, however shitty you are.

anyway, rip #6. heaven needed a qb who can occasionally make throws over the middle between the 20s.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 15:14 (twelve years ago)

the interesting thing about the jets is that you've got tanny, rex, and sanchez, and you could be justified in firing all of them or any combination of them (cutting, in the case of sanchez i guess). honestly not sure what i would do if i were in charge beyond the fact that they desperately need help evaluating nfl talent.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago)

I still think that Rex isn't the problem with that team. If you're going to blame him for this disaster you have to give him some credit for taking two pretty horrible teams to the AFC Championship. Sanchez at this point is just a sunk cost. He'll be a backup for a few years I guess but really I don't think there's any chance he gets better. It's okay that he's terrible with deep throws but the fact that he keeps getting picked off on slants and screens is what's so damaging b/c those are the ones that get run back. And unless they pick up Alex Smith or Matt Flynn I don't know who they could possibly start to make things better next year.

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago)

i really don't know how much credit to give rex. he took two teams that were really stacked with talent on defense overall as well as on the offensive line deep into the playoffs. but a lot of those guys were from the prior regime. also a point i've been hearing recently is that there is basically no more important job for a head coach these days than to get the best out of his qb--coach him up or find someone who can. rex has failed miserably at that.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:13 (twelve years ago)

whoever is responsible, letting their running game deteriorate is what has killed them as much as anything. i am not sure if rex has ever done much more than bring bart scott with him.

sanchez is 33rd rated qb per qb rating this year so there's got to be at least one guy they can get hold of to improve things

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:16 (twelve years ago)

that team rex inherited had alan faneca and damien woody. faneca in particular was outstanding in the run game iirc.

This was the seventh time this year that Sanchez has thrown 20 passes in a game while failing to complete at least 50 percent of those passes. Nobody else in the league has more than four such games.

The Jet defense was pretty good both the years they got to the AFC title game. The offense was also really good at running the ball. They kind of won despite Sanchez being a pretty poor QB.

What I would do if I was one of those clubs in the black hole QB quandry like the Jets or Cards is go and try to get Kyle 'Weirdbeard' Orton. I still don't get why KC didn't bring him back, they were winning with him at the end of last year.
