Baltimore at New EnglandSan Francisco at Atlanta
I'm taking Pats and Niners, and think upsets are unlikely (though still possible).
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)
have to think the 9ers are taking this all the way; feels like the stars are aligning for another Patriots Super Bowl loss
― frogbs, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)
In my ideal world the Niners go all the way to the Superbowl and loseBut I'm mean.
I dunno if I really have a pick for either game tbh

Pats over Niners
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 14 January 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)
baltimore against new england seems like the closest game in football right now. the afc game last year and the regular season game this year, both at gillette, were really as close as you can get without finishing tied. baltimore should've leveled the first game, pats should've won the second. but it does feel like a lot water has gone under the bridge since those games, and new england seems to have got better and baltimore worse. the big question is, what will new england do to stop flacco throwing the ball over their defense?
the nfc game is a lot easier to call. i can't find an angle that makes it look like an atlanta win. niners will score 30 and keep atlanta below 20.

Falcons beat Niners. I like the Ravens, so I would hope they dont play the Falcons in the SB so i can root against the Pats.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Monday, 14 January 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)
the whole "it's about who finishes" narrative is kinda getting turned on its ear. the best 2nd half teams were the Broncos, Packers, Seahawks, and Redskins, all eliminated. all four teams left are ones that seemed to have some open questions going into the playoffs (outside of the Pats I guess)
― frogbs, Monday, 14 January 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)
Packers? Because they sort of caught up a little bit when the win was out of reach?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 January 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)
I mean second half of the season. Skins won 7 straight to close out the season. Broncos won 11 straight. Seahawks were arguably the best team from Week 9 on. Packers started 2-3 and then went 9-2 the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Ravens looked super vulnerable to close things out, people were having doubt about the 49ers defense, and the Falcons are just dumped one to the Panthers.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 01:57 (twelve years ago)
Falcons had wrapped up home field by that time and had just nuked the giants. That game meant nothing.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 02:29 (twelve years ago)
what will new england do to stop flacco throwing the ball over their defense?
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, January 14, 2013 2:05 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
im not sure why teams are having trouble w this, i mean just cover the deep routes and make him beat you w/consistant short passing, hint he wont be able to do it
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)
playing deep coverage and stopping deep passes are not necessarily the same thing. examples: baltimore's TD at the end of regular time vs denver; new england's secondary for the last 6 years
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)
flacco makes it easy tho because he has such trouble w accuracy, usually you theres some sort tension between letting teams killing w the short game a guarding against the long bomb, and denvers fuck up isnt really instructive as it was just a mistake rather than something produced by the inherent difficulty of guarding against flacco going deep to the right sideline
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)
just stick a safety 30 yards downfield on the right sideline and everything will be cool, i am a defensive genius
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)
my special defense to counter the flac-attack: 4-man front, 3 deep zone, the other four disguised with each down between 0-2 blitzing and 2-4 in underneath zones, mixing it up. get some pressure (pats struggle w/this vs flacco) and some cheap interception opportunities, and at least discourage the long pass.

agree that scheming baltimore is a pretty simple exercise, what makes their thing work is that boldin is simply outstanding at catching balls in traffic and smith is showing some of that skill too. patriots will need to show some srs ball skills to match up.
― an eagle named "small government" (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)
i am not 100% sold on dennard although he is certainly showing promise, but i think NE goes into this game with 1 guy at CB and 1 guy at safety who are reliable against the pass in their given position. in the game earlier this season there was basically 0 at each. mccourty's switch to free safety has been really amazing for him - he totally benefits from not having to line up opposite a receiver at the line
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)
cool just put both those guys on the right side, yr move flacco

i almost guarantee that they will sic talib on boldin, with dennard on smith and mccourty shading over the top or vs 3rd receiver depending on field positon.
the right side thing is so bizarre, i don't even know. i am sure it makes sense somehow but smh anyway.

its the one pass he throws good, its a very difficult pass, and he throws it very good
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)
five yard slant, the receiver will most like at least make contact w/the ball w/some part of his body
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)
thing is, if he hits free agency, which is a legit possibility with baltimore's cap situation, he would get paid so much money he'd be able to send everyone in the US a 5 dollar bill stapled to a postcard that says 'fuck you'.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

that's pretty horrendous. i think it's a cultural competitive thing, rather than anything inherent to football though, which is to say it could be some way remediable if the will was really there. it seems like things are creeping in that direction, i hope so.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:18 (twelve years ago)
yeah i'm kinda hoping that culture changes in a big way, but it's kind of hard to foresee when you got guys like Alex Smith get a concussion and then lose their jobs
― frogbs, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:34 (twelve years ago)
it may be a cultural competitive thing, but i don't think too many other sports make such demands

― iatee, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:48 (twelve years ago)
whatever, dudes
you know as well as i do that there is a concrete manifest culture in the nfl that you play through anything. which is reinforced by the lack of guaranteed contracts and the supply of releasable cannon-fodder available to replace you.
jason taylor was a star, relatively speaking, and at least made some cash. no one else gets writeups in major newspapers.

worth reading: http://www.esquire.com/print-this/nfl-injuries-0213?page=all
"Anybody who tells you that they feel bad causing an injury is probably lying. How can you feel bad? You're going up against a guy who is just as big and strong as you are. Your coach tells you to go kick his fucking ass. Your teammates tell you to go kick his fucking ass. Your father and your brother tell you to go kick his fucking ass. The media tells you to go kick his fucking ass. Before the game, your wife tells you to go kick his fucking ass. So you go and you kick his fucking ass. And if he gets hurt, how can you go back and say, 'I didn't mean for you to get hurt like that.' You're taught to hurt people. How can you say you didn't mean to?"

I feel p depressed because of watching most of this in a bar where you get the sense that 99% of people there do not give a shit about who gets a concussion or any kind of serious injury. I usually watch games at home where I'm the only one reacting like.. this is horrible, so it's easier to deal with?

The brain trauma stuff is so depressing to me. It seems like every ten years or so I get disgusted with some aspect of NFL and stop watching, then get sucked back in a few years later (usually by hearing that the Bears are in the playoffs, but at some point I don't know if I'll be able to stomach the injuries anymore. The Johnny Knox back injury at the end of last season left me feeling deeply unsettled, and left me with a bad taste in my mouth pretty much throughout the off season. I told myself I wasn't going to be as into football this year, but once September rolled around there I was devoting every Sunday and Monday night to it again.
― beard papa, Monday, 21 January 2013 04:29 (twelve years ago)
Johnny Knox injury (and I watched it live) is quite possibly the scariest sports injury I've seen in my entire life.
I live in Chicago, and it's sad how many Bears fans call in to sports radio here, and ask the hosts what they know about Knox's possible recovery, and will he come back? The guy is currently still struggling to *walk* properly; the Bears have him on the roster as IR, but make no mistake: that's only a carrot for this poor kid to try to get back to a normal life like you and me
― Stormy Davis, Monday, 21 January 2013 04:34 (twelve years ago)
I jumped out of my chair and winced and had to leave the room.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 January 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)
ugh i just watched the beginning of that & had to close the window, i don't need to see it. i didn't know that had happened to him, i watched quite a few bears games when he was still playing
― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 21 January 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)
i have a feeling that if i listened to any sports radio whatsoever i'd have quit watching in disgust years ago
― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 21 January 2013 04:46 (twelve years ago)
this is gonna be the huge turning point IMO...I can't see football losing its popularity anytime in the next 10 years, but once the lawsuits start coming and once schools decide it's not worth the risk it'll probably be a slow death
― frogbs, Monday, 21 January 2013 04:47 (twelve years ago)
oh my god I had forgotten about the Johnny Knox injury. when I saw it live I didn't even see what the injury was. I saw his torso and below that I had assumed it was the feet of another player, then the people around me started yelling, and on replay I saw what really happened, I was so fucking stunned. I couldn't even deal with the EJ Henderson leg injury and this was five times worse
― frogbs, Monday, 21 January 2013 04:58 (twelve years ago)
Johnny Knox got bent like a reverse taco, just in case someone hasn't seen it and accidentally goes looking for it. It's gruesome. DO NOT LOOK FOR IT.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 January 2013 05:14 (twelve years ago)
This year, every play I saw where guys were diving for a loose ball, I winced and watched through my fingers. I do not want to see anything like that again if I can help it. The guys getting knocked out cold is really disturbing. The Darius Hayward-Bay injury earlier this year against the Steelers really bummed me out, and the Ridley one tonight as well.
― beard papa, Monday, 21 January 2013 05:16 (twelve years ago)
Yeah the DHB injury freaked me out. I was sure he was dead
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 January 2013 05:17 (twelve years ago)
i thought that about anquan bolden when he was on the cardinals, a throw into the end zone - they had to take him out on a board.
― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 21 January 2013 05:21 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, the Jets game? That hit was dirty, and Anquan ended up having his jaw wired shut for a few weeks iirc.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 January 2013 05:22 (twelve years ago)
I loved the Pollard hit tonight. Probably won them the game. Great play
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Monday, 21 January 2013 05:56 (twelve years ago)
that was the hit that almost convinced Kurt Warner to retire if I remember correctly. he ended up not doing it but that really would have been such a huge thing had a big name player decided to hang it up out of respect for his family (granted, he was like 37)
― frogbs, Monday, 21 January 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)
can't really figure out why new england was so ineffective last night. keeping my eyes peeled for a convincing analysis. also not sure why playcalling and game management was so uncharacteristically conservative. would have been a really interesting game if the pats had scored the couple more touchdowns they should've got in the first half when baltimore wasn't playing well, and then had to defend that lead in the second half when the ravens adjusted and basically locked them down. amazing half of football by baltimore. primed to be an outstanding super bowl imo.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)
obvs not the whole story but dropped passes killed them
― lag∞n, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)
like there were two that wouldve been first down w/in field goal range where instead they punted
― lag∞n, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:18 (twelve years ago)
I will say the Pats definitely played better on offense than 13 points would suggest.
― frogbs, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)
They had several promising drives that ended in turnovers. Also, several painful penalties.
Losing Talib allowed the Ravens to go to town with the passing game.
― Moodles, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)
the wind was clearly fucking with brady which contributed to the lack of down-the-field stuff, but cannot possibly be the sole factor

Hahaha, i just saw this. 4 pm tomorrow Marietta town square. I'll make sure to wear my brand new bandwagon jumping Tony Gonzalez jersey (which i only got because they say he's good, which is what us bandwagoners do). I'll take it off before i kick your ass cuz i dont want to get your fucking pussy juice all over it. You have no clue what youre dealing with. I'll be sure to bring my friends, this could be good for a laugh, and i bet all of them have the 5 minutes to spare that it will take me to fucking crush you.
