Baltimore vs. San Francisco

Brothers coaching against each other.
Ray Lewis's final game.
Randy Moss's final game?
Ravens second appearance.
Niners sixth.
Neither team has ever lost a Super Bowl they've appeared in.
Should be grrrrreat!

Chris Culliver, a second-year cornerback for the 49ers, made disparaging remarks about homosexuality in football during a radio interview Tuesday at the Super Bowl’s media day.

Culliver said neither he nor his teammates would welcome a gay player in their locker room.

“I don’t do the gay guys, man. I don’t do that,” Culliver said during a taped, one-minute podcast with Artie Lange.

Asked if the 49ers have any homosexual players, Culliver responded: “No. Ain’t got no gay people on the team. They gotta get up outta here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff.”

Culliver reiterated that was a true statement, and when asked if a good player might be welcomed anyhow, he said: “Nah. Can’t be … in the locker room, man. Nah.”

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:09 (twelve years ago)

I do like Joe Flacco. I read an article off one of the St. Louis papers earlier this week and I guess even Flacco's dad called him "boring". I guess the dude just chills with his wife and watches reality TV and doesn't have really any hobbies except playing football.

I got to say, the dude has a cannon of an arm. He's not as pretty as some, but man he can fling that thing deep pretty well.

That said, running a fake fg with a run with the kicker on 4th and 9 when you are up 14 is still freakin' DUMB as hell. Take the 3 points. Dude got freakin' lucky it didn't come back on his azz.

I've only been to DC once, but I had a really great time there. Transit seems easy. Layout is weird, but learnable. Every meal I ate was spectacular. And maybe it was just because I was there the week before the 2008 inauguration, but as far as identity goes, the city was ALL ABOUT ITSELF those few days. Would visit again.

(And, fwiw, the people I knew there were lifers. Grew up in the VA burbs, moved to DC proper.)

I'm not a huge football fan, but I usually end up watching about half the Ravens season just by virtue of being near a TV when the game is on. So, I'm really glad we won. The first half was monstrous fun. So many occasions to give everybody in the room a high-five. And it felt like we were playing a worthy opponent too. It's just that we were stomping the shit out of them. The last time we played the super bowl, it felt like a kinda weak game to me, like the Giants were phoning it in or whatever. As an extremely casual sports fan though,I head a lot of trouble understanding the last 5-10 minutes of the game, like when the announcers were talking about arcane nfl rules that hadn't been invoked in 40 years. What the hell was that?

how's life, Monday, 4 February 2013 11:47 (twelve years ago)

Also, DC is way more interesting than circa gives it credit for, but come on guys, your buildings are so short and squat. It's not a city, it's a Burg. Get 1 skyline.

P.s. See yall in 20 minutes.

how's life, Monday, 4 February 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

Just sent this email off to Bill Simmons:

The narrative for this game seems to be that the power outage was the only thing that saved the 49ers from a beatdown the likes that only us folks who lived through the Super Blowout era remember. And while this does make a good story, I think that, like Bigfoot sightings and Joe Buck actually showing some charisma, it's based in wishful thinking more than facts.

The 49ers were moving the ball at will in the first half but only had two turnovers and two stalled-settled field goals to show for it. Meanwhile, every big play by the Ravens on offense seemed to involve a minor Manning-esque Miracle: Flacco avoiding the rush and throwing a ball to a guy who made a catch a split second before being blasted.

Right before LaMichael James fumbled with the 49ers down 7-3 but driving and about to have a fresh set of downs around the Baltimore 20, I actually was thinking "here we go," expecting the more dangerous team to take control of the game. I mean, there is a reason that the Ravens felt the need to do that fake field goal while WINNING by 11 points, right?

Sure, the 49ers could have shot themselves in the foot for the whole game, beating themselves so the Ravens didn't really have to. But it didn't seem likely and it seems even less unlikely that the fire drill recess was the catalyst, only a coincidence.

So please, Bill. Use your influence to dispel the narrative and get CBS and/or Roger Goodell off the hook for axing the power.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 4 February 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

didn't really care who won but I was a little disappointed that the 49ers blew those timeouts - would have really loved to see Kaep with 1:30 trying to go 70 yards for a Super Bowl ring. oh well. also I felt that down by 22, you should be going for 2 upon scoring that first TD. anyway - regardless of narrative I thought the 49ers played a good game with some key mistakes; it was the Ravens who had to play out of their heads to win. Hopefully this dispels the whole "it's all about momentum heading into the playoffs" narrative - the Ravens were ice cold for the last 5-6 weeks of the season. Can't help but feel good for them though, not just getting the title but going through the Pats to do it

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:11 (twelve years ago)

wanna thank the ravens for the last minute safety so that my square could win me a couple hundred bucks at the office.

Is he the best quarterback in the league? Some will surely continue to say no. But it is impossible to deny what Flacco accomplished this season. And even though history may remember Sunday as Lewis’s last ride or the Harbaugh brothers’ reunion, it may also have been the true beginning of Flacco’s legacy.

First, Flacco beat Manning on a bitterly cold day in Denver. Then he knocked off New England’s Tom Brady on the road two weeks ago in the A.F.C. championship game. Finally, after taking down two icons, Flacco beat the wunderkind Colin Kaepernick, whose read-option versatility may well be the wave of the future but was not the style of the moment here Sunday night.

'qb x beat qb y' is my single least favorite football cliche.

Correction: February 4, 2013

An earlier version of a summary for this article misidentified the team for which Colin Kaepernick is the quarterback. It is the 49ers, not the Giants.

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2013 19:14 (twelve years ago)

So much for being hot at the end of the year, B-more went 1-4 in their final 5 regular season games...

Baltimore still leads the AFC North, but its lead has shrunk to one game with two to play.

''We're a 9-5 football team and we feel like we're 0-14 right now,'' Flacco said.

Caldwell's debut was a resounding flop. Flacco went 20 for 40 for 254 yards, lost a fumble and threw an interception. Ray Rice ran for 38 yards on 12 carries and the Ravens produced a meager 56 yards rushing.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 00:10 (twelve years ago)

i remember phil simms before the season going on about flacco being an elite quarterback, whatever that means, but it's true now anyway

unless elite means 'as good as rodgers/brady/etc', but i don't think it does

so 'unless elite quarterback means 'as good as elite quarterbacks' , flacco is an elite quarterback'

iatee, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

its somewhat more elastic than just 'the best'

its the_best + a few others who have done at least one or two discernably great things

We should devise a definitive ILNFL elite QB list to refer back to for any discussion involving this topic. And maybe do a poll for good measure.
