Excuse me while I just paste the SEC-relevant portion of the article.
"Alabama will open the 2013 season in the USA Today coaches poll where it finished its 2012 campaign.
At the top.
Alabama received 58 of a possible 62 votes to land the top spot in the preseason coaches poll, marking the third time in program history it's been ranked No. 1 to start the year.
Ohio State, which received three first-place votes, is No. 2, Oregon is No. 3, Stanford is No. 4 and Georgia is fifth. Texas A&M, which received one first-place vote, is No. 6.
The SEC has five of the coaches' top 10 teams, as South Carolina ranks seventh and Florida is No. 10."

With the SEC likely moving to a nine-game conference schedule and the Gators already committed to playing Florida State, this leaves UF with only two remaining games. The Gators want those two games to be played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, where a UF official says they net about $2.5 million per game."People don't want to hear this, but it's the fact of the matter," UF Athletic Director Jeremy Foley told the Associated Press earlier this week. "When you take a home game out of here, it cost you significant dollars. ... You can't do that every other year and try to run a sports program at the level we're trying to run it. I think everybody thinks that's not a big deal. Well, it is a big deal."

To stay with Oregon you need a super-quick athletic defense and your offense needs to stay on the field a long time, grinding out long scoring drives that end in TDs. Unfortunately for the Ducks, this sounds a lot like Alabama.

As a Bama/Saban fan, I'm under no illusions that the guy is predictable. But it would make ZERO sense for him to jump to Texas when he's already got a well-oiled national championship machine. The only Texas team I could see him leaving for is the Dallas Cowboys.
It's more likely that Mack Brown will resign (under pressure) and Texas will pony up huge money for somebody willing to take their calls.

― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 8 September 2013 05:43 (eleven years ago)
i'm in gawking-at-car-crash mode with USC. i'm trying not to get too mad about it - it's been a rough ride since sanchez declared for the draft, but i think the bottom line is that the players aren't buying into kiffin as a coach. his lame play calling, qb drama, all that is one thing, but they recruit at such a high level compared to teams like washington state and hawaii that to see their offense just play absolutely terribly means they aren't developing players like other teams are. it seemed like kiffin had it the year they went 10-2 despite the bowl ban, but who knows, maybe that was matt barkely holding them together or something. it's kind of fascinating just how terrible of a job he's done last year and this year. and the worst part is that their defense looks great (for now), but whoever they bring in after kiffin will tear everything down and start from scratch rather than just rebuilding the offense. oh well.

Got to say finally seeing Manziel play after reading the hype, he is a pretty exciting player but totally gets away with some total BS at times. It definitely was not a great day in Alabama football defense (and especially Texas A&M defense...yikes). That WR Evans is a beast and will get a ton of NFL interest with all that speed at that size.
The end of that Wisconsin/Arizona St. game was total crap and if I was a gambler I would be furious. Those officials probably don't want to do a game in Madison anytime soon.

the Wisconsin-Arizona St. thing was absolutely disgusting
why didn't the wisconsin qb take a knee instead of bending over and putting the ball on the ground? and why did the officials let the clock keep running after ASU fell on the ball, which happened AFTER the whistle blowing the play dead? the officials bear the most blame there, but it seems like all three parties to the play did something to fuck it up.

They really should get the NFL to put up the bill to pay some of the NCAA players. Good lord for all the tax dollars the NFL gets in free bees it could throw a bone back and 'pay for the development of their players' which is big portion of what NCAA football does.
I'm not so sure they should just have like 4x16 team conferences and make a super college league and make it semi-pro.
― earlnash, Sunday, 22 September 2013 04:23 (eleven years ago)
That day is coming, preferably soon.
Split the country in basically four quadrants, carry over a lot of the present associations, and have their own governing body that isn't the NCAA.
Since it would be semi-pro, the seasons and the post-seasons could be a little longer.
And it would be fun to see actual above-the-table bidding wars for high school prospects.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 22 September 2013 04:32 (eleven years ago)

Supposedly some Texas Longhorns guy offered Nick Saban 10 MILLION DOLLARS a year to leave Alabama, it's a farce to consider calling it not 'pro-football'.
I think the whole thing would be improved even real college football by separating off those super schools. Heck if they want to make it 'fair' use some type of relegation to the next level.
― earlnash, Sunday, 22 September 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago)
some legitimate minor leagues for the guys who don't care about class
I greatly doubt that any minor league could pay coaches anywhere near the scale that FBS schools pay them, let alone pay players or fill stadiums the size of the top universities. The only possible entity that could finance such a gig would be the NFL, and why should they, given the current system?
― Aimless, Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago)
If there's no way to get around Title IX with regards to paying players, the NCAA needs to lift all the restrictions about how players can earn/receive money on their own. Autographs, appearances, etc. All of the shit should be legal.

Will never happen. NCAA doesn't go away without college football going away. Needs to be a minor league system. Current system is a farce.

I never thought Bobby Petrino would coach again either, but WKU had other ideas. I wonder if Lane Kiffin will. The main difference is that Petrino teams keep winning while he remains an asshole. Kiffin, always an asshole, can't boast the same winning record.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 September 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago)
i was always conflicted on kiffin - asshole coaches can be fun when they're coaching your team... and no coach since whoever picked up the pieces at SMU has had to deal with so many sanctions - hell, even penn state is getting their scholarships back. watching the game against asu last night, i was wondering how any coach could have won that game with usc's team, given that they simply don't have the players to sub in on defense or on the offensive line late in the game. still, recruits were bailing on usc, the play calling wasn't imaginative at all, they haven't made halftime adjustments since 2007, and players just weren't developing. guys either came in and were amazing off the bat, or they never got good. so it's definitely time for a change - i just hope they can get a good coach who's willing to deal with one more year of penalties.

― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Monday, 30 September 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago)
It's not USC hate. I actually liked the team when Pete Carroll was there. This is purely about Lane Kiffin.
Besides, have you seen an Alabama game this year? The defense is getting better each week, but the offense is busted. I'm tempering my enthusiasm.

I was actually disgusted with myself for rooting for them in the end, because I DO love upsets, but then I took great delight in all the sad faces in the stadium when it was over. A lot of Alabama fans hate Auburn/Auburn fans, but I'd argue that more hate Tennessee/Tennessee fans.

right now, both alabama and oregon seem to be playing at a different level than everyone else, except maybe clemson. that may be an illusion brought on by a lack of top ten opponents in their schedules. but it's hard not to draw that conclusion from the results thus far.
― Aimless, Monday, 7 October 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago)
i don't think alabama is really playing at a diff level
i'd say oregon and baylor are if anyone is
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 19:53 (eleven years ago)
Alabama's D is lights out and getting better each week. I still have questions about the offense, though. They're never gonna be a team who hangs 70 points on opponents like Oregon and Baylor, or even Ohio State, do, but even in situations where they play a TA&M they get it done. So it's hard to say whether or not they're at a different level, but I'm not sure that anyone below them in the top 10 beats them at the moment.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 October 2013 20:27 (eleven years ago)
they obv could win the title again but it's not like anyone watching them is like "whoa they're just KILLING people this year"
bama's schedule sets up really nice for them but i think they're only about 55/45 or so over LSU even w/ home field
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago)

It's weird but it's the world we live in. Clowney was a non factor in that game he crushed the guy, plus he was unblocked and outweighed the runner by 100 lbs. he did have 13 sacks last year though

Clowney has been somewhat disappointing this year, but he also revealed a couple weeks ago that he was playing with an injury this year (it can be googled, I've forgotten what it is). Anyway, it must be a bigger factor than he expected.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 02:57 (eleven years ago)

missouri got 3 tough games left and they're all at home, i'd say they're in the driver's seat. could imagine a rock-scissor-paper scenario where whoever ends up top ranked at the end of the season would take the division, if this happened and south carolina beat clemson south carolina would almost definitely be the top ranked team, otherwise it would probably be missouri since it would mean they beat a&m late. it would difficult for georgia to make up the ground in the polls, any scenario where they're higher ranked than mizzou and the gamecocks is almost definitely a scenario where those teams drop two conference games anyway. hard to imagine todd grantham is still around next year, maybe georgia can get will muschamp.

The Grambling football team walked out of a Tuesday night meeting with president Frank Pogue, athletic director Aaron James, interim coach George Ragsdale and student government president Jordan Harvey held in the stadium support facility building outside of Eddie G. Robinson Stadium.
A member of the football program said the meeting occurred to address the reasons for bus travel to games in Kansas City and Indianapolis and the firing of head coach Doug Williams in mid-September.
The source said Harvey called the team “soft,” which prompted a reaction and exit from all of the players. He added that the meeting occurred after practice, and the team didn’t respond well to Pogue’s or the administration’s message before Harvey’s comment.

the ducks get a lot tougher to beat in the second half. opposing defenses wear down.
a program like alabama has the horses to keep putting fresh legs on the field with little or no drop off in talent, but the vast majority of teams can't do that and they flag badly by the 4th quarter.

the funny thing about this whole Jonathan Martin thing is guys saying that Stanford guys are "soft" compared to players from other schools. Which is total horseshit because Stanford is-and has been for a while-the most physical team in the country by far (non-Tuscaloosa division, and its even close there)

― Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 November 2013 19:27 (eleven years ago)
To stay with Oregon you need a super-quick athletic defense and your offense needs to stay on the field a long time, grinding out long scoring drives that end in TDs.
Stanford delivered on the long grinding scoring drives in spades. Their defense was very good, but beatable, and the game was certainly winnable, but Oregon's offense was so mistake prone and the play calling didn't find enough seams to exploit until very late in the game.
― Aimless, Friday, 8 November 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago)
auburn has had like 9 huge plays this game and its :15 into the 2nd half

Putting everyone and their brother on the line and running the ball is just bad ass and I wish more clubs did it.
― earlnash, Saturday, 9 November 2013 23:32 (eleven years ago)
It's definitely cool to watch. I love watching the 49ers for the same reason. Innovation on the offensive side if the ball doesn't necessarily mean throwing it 60 times a game
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Sunday, 10 November 2013 03:58 (eleven years ago)
In case anyone is under the misimpression that Oregon scores so much because it is pass-happy, the truth is that their offense is weighted toward the run. The innovations are mainly in speed of play, plenty of disguise and misdirection, and the QB making reads on every play.

I think everyone knew Auburn would rebound when Gus Malzhan came back to coach, but I don't think anyone expected it to happen so quickly. That said, if Alabama can stuff Auburn's running game, it's up to Marshall to make big plays through the air. Alabama's secondary can be porous on the edges, but those safetys are really damned good.

Let's say for some crazy reason it happens that Michigan beats Ohio State this weekend. FSU and Alabama win out and it won't make a difference for the top game, but OSU drops a game to UM and every other team in the top 10 is scrambling for #3. Who gets it?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 November 2013 23:23 (eleven years ago)
tbh i want osu to win out yet not get to the title game, causing urban to summon the waaaaahhhhmbulance

Michigan has as much chance of beating OSU as the http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG do of winning the Super Bowl this year.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:57 (eleven years ago)
What is the prevailing idea on AJ McCarron's pro football prospects?
If Alabama can win the Iron Bowl, SEC championship and the bowl game to win a National Title, the guy is probably going to go down as the biggest winner at QB in the history of college football with the 3 titles.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 12:38 (eleven years ago)
That and a bowl of fucking soup will be enough to earn him a sweet fourth round pick. Ive watched a lot of his games and ive never seen him do anything lights out or that makes me go "wow". Prime example of Alabama during his career was SEC champ game against Georgia last year where the toughest thing he had to do was hand off to TJ Yeldon and Eddie Lacey and watch them run behind massive holes courtesy of the three first round draft picks on the O-line.
What is he, the 5th or 6th best qb in the SEC this year?
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago)
I've never been able to grade college qbs against what's required to be a pro qb. I mean, I knew Tebow would probably be a bust, but most of the college guys who stay in the pocket and can throw an accurate long ball all seem the same to me. Come draft time, though, some get trumpeted and some go completely undrafted. McCarron could probably go as high as 2nd round, but probably to someone who just wants an insurance qb like Tampa.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:51 (eleven years ago)
I like the guy, and i think he is perfect for Alabama. He's just there not to screw anything up. I just read SI's article about him, consensus seems to be a middle round draft pick.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago)
Im curious where Aaron Murray will go. I dont think he or McCarron will go really high, Murray will probably go higher.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago)
In the Bama system McCarron doesn't have to do much to win. His biggest obv attribute is that he does exactly what he is supposed to do 98% of the time. His mechanics seem good, but any pro team that takes him needs to be a team built to grind out yards on the ground and throw short passes for 6 to 10 yards.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago)
How badly did Murray injure his knee? I haven't followed the story, but if it's ugly it could definitely affect his draft prospects.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:07 (eleven years ago)
Torn ACL. Probably true, this will sink him to the lower depths of the draft.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:16 (eleven years ago)
If auburn wins out they should vault osu. At least that's what my gut tells me. Big 10 is so bad this year. SEC not as string as in past years but....

osu's best W is winning by 10 at then-#16 northwestern (who finished 5-7 and 1-7 in the big ten). they also beat wisconsin by seven at home.
auburn beat four top-25 teams, two of them top-10, and one of those on the road. their loss was at #6.

Hoping Sparty takes it to OSU next weekend, but as much as I'd like to see an SEC team playing in the nat'l champ game again, I'll settle for Auburn in the Sugar and Alabama in the Orange.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 December 2013 05:22 (eleven years ago)
Also, ragging on Alabama's performance today won't spur any pushback from me. They played sloppy football, couldn't stop the rush, couldn't make fgs and couldn't cover that final return. They gave the game away and deserved the "L".
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 December 2013 05:24 (eleven years ago)

As much as Alabama fans have had success, you know it burns up those lunatics that in this run Auburn has just absolutely kicked them square in the nuts now twice in a short few years! Crimson Tide have three national titles in a short few years and it's just going to burn up a ton of them the couple they didn't win because of Auburn.
I've seen a lot of football, that was one of the most amazing ends to any game I have seen.

Granted, I'm an outlier as far as stereotypical Alabama fans go, but I'm of the mind that I'd like to see the team who beat us go on to win the national championship. Also, I enjoy immensely rooting against Ohio State (and Urban Meyer), so whatever needs to happen happens to get Auburn into the big game.

Today's newspaper (The Oregonian) had a longish article about how excited Oregon and Texas are to be playing each other in the Alamo Bowl. Yup.
― Aimless, Friday, 13 December 2013 18:45 (eleven years ago)
Mariota has already said he's staying in school for another year, and today Bridgewater and Manziel have hinted they might do the same thing. lol Houston, Cleveland, and Jacksonville.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 December 2013 21:41 (eleven years ago)
Bridgewater would be making a huge mistake. Take the $$$$$$$$$$$$
― Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Monday, 16 December 2013 15:22 (eleven years ago)
j fever, what say you of this? http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/report-lane-kiffin-help-evaluate-alabama-offense-181641702--ncaaf.html
― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 06:01 (eleven years ago)
I think it's silly, but it also makes me wonder if Nussmeier is leaving. It's not like Alabama's offense is super complex, but he orchestrates it so well. I am hoping this isn't a Kiffin job interview.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 14:43 (eleven years ago)
Kiffin also had some poor interactions with recruits, notably receiver Alshon Jeffrey. Kiffin, who was recruiting Jeffrey, told the then-high school senior "he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina" if Jeffrey chose to play at South Carolina instead of Tennessee. Jeffrey went to South Carolina and is now a receiver with the Chicago Bears.
^great work there, Kiffin.
― Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:12 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, the guy's a genius.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago)
so will you still root for alabama if kiffin is OC? not that i think that will happen - saban is a savvy enough politician to realize the fallout with a guy as tarnished as kiffin (although i do think he can be a good college OC when relieved of the media and team-running duties he had as a head coach). i just think it would be hilarious for an SEC fanbase to be forced to start rooting for him. or maybe you could root for a dominant defense that could win games 3-0 or whatever, and kiffin would get fired after a year of being horrible. that could work.
― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 02:58 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, tbh, the offensive side of Tide football has never been what's drawn me as a fan. When it's working, hooray, but for me it's defense defense defense. How much of ghostwriter Saban is for Kirby Smart's defense is an unknown, but IF Kiffin were to be hired for whatever reason, his job is a simple one and that's to score at least one more point than the opponent.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 03:44 (eleven years ago)
The job is so simple that 50% of OCs fail at it in every game.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 03:57 (eleven years ago)
I think you might have read me wrong. Alabama's offense, in particular, isn't like an Oregon or Ohio State...it's a lot more basic.

So ESPN Classic is simulcasting the BCS Championship game with just the sound of the stadium. No announcers, and possibly no break music or any other production touches. The downside is that I don't think UVerse carries Classic in hd. :(

28 points off of turnovers. That's bullshit. Alabama deserved to lose that game. Hurts to say that, but what the fuck.
― Cereal. Killed it. No spoon. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 January 2014 05:40 (eleven years ago)
Remember, this was Oklahoma v Alabama. Both teams deserved to lose, just on general principles, but that couldn't be arranged on such short notice.

Al Golden to Penn State, Charlie Strong to Texas.
I knew someone would take that Texas job eventually, but I thought maybe Charlie Strong had higher standards.

I'm sad. Not as sad as I'd be if Alabama had played FSU and lost, but still sad. I like Jimbo, though, and winning the title capped off an undefeated season, so good for him.

some reading for the offseason - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Football_Playoff
Among the factors that the committee will weigh are strength of schedule, conference championships, team records, and head-to-head results,[7] plus other considerations such as injuries and weather.[22]

I've never seen him play but I am confident he'll be drafted by the Browns.

I think there's a chance Johnny Football either falls to Clevo or they move up to get him and then Bortles goes to the Vikes. Bridgewater is a wild card.
