just had a great discussion about this with a co-worker. he asked me if i had heard about "all this fuss" about the r******s name, and that he thought it was bogus. there's no reason for anyone to get offended, he can't understand why anyone would, and he doesn't consider the term slanderous or racist. then i asked him about who was leading the effort to change the name, and he said some native american groups were involved. uhh...

he also said

"there was a time when geronimo was on the u.s. nickel - it's an honor."

can't argue with that!

Doesn't matter. The 81-year-old Washington http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG name is falling, and everybody better get out of the way. For the majority of Native Americans who don't care, we'll care for them. For the Native Americans who haven't asked for help, we're glad to give it to them.

Trust us. We know what's best. We'll take this away for your own good, and put up barriers that protect you from ever being harmed again.

i imagine that several BIG BOSSES at ESPN wanted to manufacture a contrived counterpoint to the clear and obvious point of "hey this team name is a clear racial slur that refers to SKIN COLOR and somehow managed to limp into the 21st century with this hella outdated and generally offensive name" so that they weren't perceived to be looking at both sides of the issue and down to the bullpen they went and who raised their goddamned hand but rick fucking reilly

While I stand by the reporting in my Sept. 18 column about the Washington http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG nickname controversy, and felt I accurately quoted my father-in-law in the piece, clearly he feels differently. This is an incredibly sensitive issue, and Bob felt he had more to say on the subject after that column was posted on ESPN.com. We've spoken and cleared this up. I admire Bob and respect his opinions, and he's welcome to express them. Bob and I are good and I'm looking forward to my next steak with him.

at this point Asian Americans are sort of tired that they're the racial group in America that it's okay to make 'satirical' jokes about when you want to make a point about race relations in America.

If I were Asian perhaps I would feel differently, but I don't get this at all. I encounter plenty of OTT jokes re: Jews, African-Americans, Latinos or other prominent minorities enlisted to make a point about race relations in America. For example:

"You know, it’s sort of fun to talk about the name of our football team, because it gets some attention for some of the people that write it, that need clicks, or what have you. But reality is, no one ever talks about what’s going on on reservations, the fact that they have such high unemployment rates, health care issues, education issues, environmental issues, lack of water, lack of electricity.

"No one wants to talk about that stuff, because it’s not cocktail, chit-chat-talk, it’s a real-life need, real-life issues. And I think they don’t want to focus on that, and I dedicated an effort to do that."

The fleecing of the public to pay for stadiums that the vast majority of taxpayers cant afford to go to is just mind-blowing. I cant believe every time a team tries to hijack a city to get taxpayer money to build a stadium it works. If anybody has the time, read the Atlanta Journal Constitution's ongoing series about the new Braves stadium. It's nauseating (the deal for the new stadium, not the AJC whose reporting on this issue is fantastic).

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Friday, 5 September 2014 18:31 (ten years ago)

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:34 (ten years ago)

He said it was a net plus, although he was distraught over how much swearing there was and joked that Coach Bill O’Brien should introduce a cuss jar. I asked McNair if he was as sensitive to other offensive language, specifically the N.F.L. team in the nation’s capital’s being named the Redsk1ns. McNair told me that he grew up in western North Carolina, around many Cherokee Indians. ‘‘Everybody respected their courage,’’ McNair told me of the Indians. ‘‘They might not have respected the way they held their whiskey, but. . . .’’ He laughed. ‘‘We respected their courage. They’re very brave people.’’

You're wondering, even for the NYT, how does somebody get to be such a front-running fairweather sycophant that they write this fawning spooge, but he helps you out with his little autobiographical sprinkles. "I am a Patriots fan... I live in Washington and usually write about politics..."

one year passes...

The Washington r******s failed to sign quarterback Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal, setting the stage for his possible departure next offseason.

Team president Bruce Allen said in a statement that Cousins was "obviously important to our team and fans" and detailed the team's offer made to the quarterback. He also talked about the decision in a video posted on the team's website but referred to Cousins on five occasions as "Kurt" instead of Kirk.

Asked about Allen's pronunciation of Cousins' first name, a team spokesman said it sounded that way because of the r******s president's accent.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 20:09 (five years ago)

FedEx on Thursday became the first major corporate backer of the Washington Redskins to call on the team to change its name, the most significant development yet amid mounting financial and political pressure on team owner Daniel Snyder in the long-running controversy.

In a one-sentence statement issued Thursday afternoon, Memphis-based FedEx said, “We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name.”

Even without elaboration from the company, the statement signals a dramatic pivot by one of the Redskins’ more loyal, long-standing corporate backers — a Fortune 100 company that for more than two decades has tied its brand to that of the team.

The company’s request comes less than a week after a group of more than 85 investment firms and shareholders representing $620 billion in assets called on FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo to sever ties with the team unless Snyder changes its name.

And it represents another shift in a battle in which the terrain has shifted from moral appeals to business and political tactics during a period in which the country is reexamining statues, monuments, symbols and corporate names and logos that some Americans have never questioned but others long have considered a source of offense, insult or pain.

If prominent Redskins sponsors feel sufficient pressure to dissociate from the team, Snyder’s bottom line would take a significant hit at the same time he faces political roadblocks in building a new stadium.

FedEx, which ranks 47th on the 2020 Fortune 500 list, holds the naming rights to the team’s existing stadium in Landover, Md., through 2026 under a 27-year, $205 million deal signed in November 1999. Moreover, the company’s CEO, Frederick W. Smith, is a minority investor in the team, believed to have a 10 percent share.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/07/03/washington-redskins-launch-review-controversial-team-name/

The Washington Redskins said Friday they were beginning a thorough review of the team’s controversial nickname, a stunning step that came as a number of the team’s largest corporate sponsors called for a change. The decision followed years in which the franchise refused to even consider such a move.

The team offered few details of what the review will entail, but two people familiar with discussions between team owner Daniel Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other league officials that led to Friday’s announcement said the review is expected to result in a new team name and mascot.

“You know where this leads," one of the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They’re working on that process [of changing the name]. It will end with a new name. Dan has been listening to different people over the last number of weeks.”

Asked whether a change was certain, the person said, “I don’t want to say 100 percent. It’s very likely headed in that direction.”

A second person with knowledge of the situation said: “It’s not a matter of if the name changes but when.”

it will be such an amazing surprise when the "review" determines that yes, it is in fact a racist team name that should have been changed many years ago

time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:16 (four years ago)

but the review will also find that the team holds no personal liability in the matter, having not been aware of the damage it caused until the review

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 15:46 (four years ago)

ha, apparently I wasn’t the first one to think of that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_City_Go-Go

In December 2017, the Washington Wizards unveiled the Capital City Go-Go's name and released their logo. The team's name alludes to the go-go music genre that started in the mid-1960s to late 1970s local to Washington, D.C.

ok i regret posting that because i was only ever making a flippant generalization that the football team has never been a big part of DC metro culture like the wizards or even the nats are, they belong to maryland and virginia. i've met more WFT fans from baltimore (from the post-colts pre-ravens era) than i have from DC city proper. i spent six years in PG county (the home of go-go music AND... fedex field) and i still met surprisingly few fans who were native to the county. the idea of snyder using something like go-go to brand his team just strikes me as cheap. of course chuck brown was supposedly a big sk*ns fan so what do i know.

three months pass...

just . . . astonishing (from defector + wapo)

The funniest insight into Snyder’s warped brain comes from the rundown of his relentless pursuit of petty feuds with the many enemies he’s come to suspect of dishing gossip to journalists, and his attorneys’ tenuous but often successful legal maneuvering to gain access to the private communications of those enemies. Most prominent among that group is former WFT president Bruce Allen, who Snyder fired in December 2019 following a 3–13 regular season. Snyder became convinced that Allen was connected to the big trumped-up global conspiracy business, and his lawyers insisted they had “rock-solid” evidence of this whole deal, but it turns out what really knotted up Snyder’s undies may have been that Allen didn’t congratulate him for hiring head coach Ron Rivera two years ago:

In January 2020, after the news conference announcing Rivera’s hire, according to these people, Snyder learned that Allen had sent a congratulatory text to Rivera. Snyder was insulted, these people said, that he didn’t receive a similar text from Allen, whom Snyder had fired a few weeks before.

This was significant enough of a sticking point between the two men that Snyder attempted to use the pandemic and the threat of withholding money contractually owed to Allen as leverage, in order to force his former subordinate to send along a nice text message. Hilariously, even this failed to secure the desired congratulations:

Later that year, the team, citing the pandemic, attempted to get out of paying Allen all of the money he was owed under his contract. Allen fought back, and Snyder agreed to pay his full salary. But in a message sent to Allen’s lawyers over settlement terms, one of Snyder’s lawyers included a condition that Allen wouldn’t agree to meet, according to text messages reviewed by The Post.

“In addition, I understand that Mr. Allen has agreed to send a text message to Mr. Snyder stating, ‘Congrats on the hire,’” Snyder’s attorney wrote in July 2020, seven months after Snyder hired Rivera. Allen’s lawyers resolved the pay dispute, but he never sent this text, according to a person with knowledge of the case.

putting a stadium in dumfries (or even woodbridge) would create astounding traffic jams

Lol at "create."

At minimum, it would exacerbate the existing ones.

Which could be - in the long term - a good thing. At this point I do not give a fuck. Make the whole enterprise utterly untenable. Teach the fan base an expensive and unpleasant lesson. Make it suck, for everyone forever. Maybe then people will rethink how it could be done differently.

this is a pretty remarkable report, produced by one of the NFL's partners no less, discussing how daniel snyder is one of the truly preeminent assholes in america

The whole thing is pretty curious considering how the whole Gruden thing happened and the leak that Sheffter was pretty much on speed dial with Allen and the league office as a mouthpiece. Add in the whole debacle in Mississippi with Favre and really the whole mafia line is probably not far from the truth.

NFL world is just a microcosm of the sleazy world of American corporate and political governance.

i doubt that any NFL owner has the moral standing to call for daniel snyder's ouster, but god knows jim irsay doesn't

This was an interesting segment. I never knew about the whole thing with trying to get Papa John to go after Goodell thing. Kinda interesting considering what happened to him and considering Kraft got busted and was able to walk away from getting busted on camera at a rub and tug.

i like how the commanders are incorporating real war imagery like fiery explosions in their public relations. soon there will be orphans in the background, crying and holding the football

symsymsym, Monday, 2 January 2023 20:28 (two years ago)

football men that i command, let me tell you - this is not a game. this is a war. this is not a playing field. this is a battlefield. we will fight to the death for every single yard, and we may not return home. we might die out there as heroes who will never be forgotten. they'll make statues of you, those of you who are willing to sacrifice, at least. we will take the fight to the enemy and punish them. then i will run for senate

Karl Malone, Monday, 2 January 2023 20:35 (two years ago)

After 24 years, 27 starting quarterbacks, and two playoff wins, the Dan Snyder era is mercifully over.
