12-4 last week, 22-10 overall

Chiefs @ Eagles- This looks pretty even on paper to me. I’ll stick Philly at home.

Texans @ Ravens- I don’t know how to read either club. Ravens D got walked on by Denver, then the offense couldn’t do much against Cleveland. Texans have been winning kinda ugly. I’m probably wrong, but I’ll take Ravens at home.

Browns @ Vikings- The Browns defense seems ready for prime time, but the offense is just not there at all. Minnesota would be pretty dangerous if they had a top tier QB. Vikings seem better, but I could see this being close.

Giants @ Panthers- Panthers have played good enough to lose and the Giants are just not going to be any good throwing the ball 50 times a game. Panthers on paper seem a bit better, so give me Carolina.

Packers @ Bengals- Hard to take Cincy to beat Green Bay until they actually knock them off, but on paper this is a pretty even steven matchup. Green Bay. I think while Jay Gruden and the Bengals have the tools to be big passing team, I do think they would be more dangerous going into a time of possession team and just controlling the clock. They do that and keep Rogers off the field, I think it could be a pretty interesting game. I think Green Bay is vulnerable to the run and Cincy could have an interesting run game (give Bernard the rock).

Rams @ Cowboys- Rams are decent, but I just can’t see Jeff Fisher wanting to throw the ball 55 times a game. I think Dallas is going to be good on D this year. I like Dallas and hopefully they don’t play stupid (like they often do) with the turnovers/penalties.

Lions @ Washington- Washington just doesn’t look that good at all and it’s more than RGIII. It is hard to take the Lions on the road, but give me Detroit in an upset.

Bucs @ Pats- Pats. Yeesh it will be mumble and glower when those two coaches meet after the game.
Cards @ Saints- Saints but I’d believe it if Arizona gives them a game. AZ should have traded for Palmer like 3 years ago.
Chargers @ Titans- Both of these clubs are kind of middling mysteries to me. I guess SD.
Falcons @ Dolphins- Intriquing matchup here…I really want to take Miami, but will take Atlanta on rep.
Bills @ Jets- who knows…Jets
Colts @ 49ers- Niners will eat ‘em alive. Indy is kind of pushing Luck to have to do a bit too much.
Jags @ Seahawks- Seahawks and man that is a matchup of two clubs with some funky uniforms…all metallic and green blue.
Bears @ Steelers- These clubs just rarely play, which kind of seems weird considering their historical makeup. Got to think the Bears are the better club and I hope they win, but that said it is hard to think the Steelers being 0-3.
Raiders @ Broncos- Broncos

earlnash, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)

brian hoyer starting for cleveland. he didn't show much in his brief run out for the cardinals, and the browns offense is not really equipped was any qb to shine, so this might kill his nfl career, but he is unlikely to be worse than weeden. who is out because he banged his thumb on a helmet?

it seems smart to go with hoyer over campbell. they are probably not winning the super bowl this year (sorry brownie) and they already know what they have with campbell, which is not much.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

equipped for any qb to shine

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

altho that is perhaps unfair, when josh gordon comes back (if he can stay off the syrup) you actually do have a reasonable supporting cast there

Poor Jason Campbell. He had a talent.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

ryan clady out for the season is a big deal. pman can get the ball on its way quickly enough that line problems shouldn't be a big deal overall, but could mean a couple more hits per game to that fragile, geriatric frame.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

none of the Browns QBs had any success anywhere else either, I don't think it's because their system is just that terrible

brownie, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)

v interesting i thot, and i feel like this makes sense of some unusual moves throughout the league

The league is headed for a two-tiered system: We may be close to being there already but the middle class of players is disappearing. We are looking at a roster makeup of five highly paid players and the rest of the team making the minimum. It is yet to be seen if this is a good or bad thing but as an agent I think it’s bad. Owners are pushing their GMs and salary cap mangers to reward just a handful of players (about four to six) and get the rest from the draft and undrafted free agent pool.

Why is this happening? The new CBA has made draft picks and undrafted free agents so attractive that teams will part with solid players once they hit thirty years old and bet on developing a younger guy, saving money and potentially avoiding the risk of having an older player get injured. When an older player gets injured there are exponential fiscal liabilities such as the injury protection benefit, carrying a vested veteran on IR, pension requirements, workers’ compensation and/or other collectively bargained injury benefits such as the line of duty benefit. It seems like the days of starting but not being marquee Guards, Centers, Tight Ends, and/or Safeties making $3 to $5 million a year are disappearing. Look for the money poured into Corners, QBs, DE’s and left tackles to continue and to be accelerated versus other positions. Once this system takes root, I truly believe careers for non-pro bowl players, the middle class, will get shorter and shorter. The flip side is more young players will hit the field sooner. I also believe one fall-out of this pattern is the record setting pace of penalties and sacks that we saw in the first two weeks.

More emphasis will be put on coaches who know how to develop young talent. They will be coveted and paid handsomely by smart organizations. We could see continued sloppy football in the first quarter of every season to come. When this makeup becomes coagulated throughout the league, It will be interesting to see how a locker room of haves and have-nots will gel.

This trade swings Colts no matter how you look at it. They're looking at a pretty good 2013 season, which means their rd 1 pick would've probably been in the 18-28 range. Richardson was a #3 pick talent just one season ago. Colts now have the #1 and #3 players from the 2012 draft. Cleveland? Bupkus.

We drafted him 3rd AND traded another pick to move up and grab him. For those counting at home that's the 3rd overall pick plus a second pick traded away for a late 1st round pick..way to go.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)

We drafted him 3rd AND traded another pick to move up and grab him.

You traded four picks to move up and grab him I think.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:49 (twelve years ago)

Fwiw I think most Colts fans are hating this trade. No one is down with the new Pep Hamilton focus on the running game, and considering the extant pass-blocking problems + losing Ballard (who was an excellent blocker) and ongoing Allen injury (also an A+ blocker), no one wanted them to throw away a 1st Round pick to spend on OLine in order to essentially double-down on committing to the run game. Everyone in Indy wants more passing.

Those same fans also tend to not believe in the running game opening up the passing game (I guess their offensive schemes, as they're set up now, telegraph a lot to the defense?). I was pumped that they brought in Bradshaw, whom I think is more than enough, but idk super talented, young rb to pair with Luck seems like an interesting enough proposition imo.

Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)

Falcons are in deep deep trouble. Biermann: out for season. Ewing: Out for season. Weatherspoon: out till week 11. Jackson: out for four weeks. Samuel: gimpy. R.White: gimpy. Offensive line: sieve.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)

I think having balance between the pass and run is still the way to go in NFL. If you can run the ball, you got options and you can really chew the clock up. I think the later Manning Colts teams definitely lost something after the running game went out.

The thing I think Trent Richardson could add to the Colts is coming out of the backfield to catch the ball, which he did decently last year (51 catches 7.2 y/r). Heck, Andrew Luck did plenty of handing off of the rock even at Stanford as that team was also really, really good at running the ball. Having a good play action game makes a difference.

You never know on injuries and who is going to get drafted with the pick, but this seems like a good deal for the Colts and perhaps even not a bad idea for the Browns. NFL trades are rare and odd because the trade deadline is so early in the season. It would be more interesting I think if clubs could deal up to say game 9 or 10 (kind of the equivalent to say the MLB version). The clubs that would really, really benefit is maybe a club that loses a starting key player, but is really good everywhere else and maybe they could bet to get someone to try to go 'all in'.

earlnash, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

For a sport that talking about the game itself is a big business, I think it would pay some dividends on having a more open trading schedule.

earlnash, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)

the moral of the story is don't draft a running back 3rd. hell, don't draft a running back in the first round. richardson is a minimal upgrade over bradshaw.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

yeah, the very worst part of this is what the browns gave over to get richardson in the first place obv, and particularly in that context they got too little for him 15 months later. but at the same time indy have overpaid for an RB in the 2013 nfl, one who is not without question marks and for all that he looks to be a good player he is not the kind of guy that is ever going to take over a game.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:50 (twelve years ago)

This trade swings Colts no matter how you look at it.

well this isn't true. if richardson continues to be an average running back and the browns pick a really high impact guy next year with their extra first round pick then it would certainly swing in the browns favor.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:10 (twelve years ago)

i also don't agree that richardson is a marginal upgrade over bradshaw though. you still have to factor in his upside.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:11 (twelve years ago)

i don't think you can evaluate this based on what the browns gave up to get richardson considering it was a totally different front office

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:12 (twelve years ago)

what is trent richardson's upside?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:13 (twelve years ago)

he was a consensus elite rb prospect who's played one banged up season on one of the worst offenses in the NFL, it's not for certain that we've seen all he is

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)

Richardson is an "average" running back?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:15 (twelve years ago)

i would say his upside is a pro bowl running back?

if he plays up to that level i think it's worth a draft pick that will likely fall in the latter half of the first round when you consider that the colts are set up to perennially content for the playoffs

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:16 (twelve years ago)

Richardson is an "average" running back?

― Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, September 18, 2013 9:15 PM (52 seconds ago) Bookmark

is the implication that he's below average? i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt of having played on a browns team with one of the worst passing games in the nfl

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:17 (twelve years ago)

if i'm the colts though there are so many needs i fill before running back

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:18 (twelve years ago)

that's probably true though i'm not sure luck is quite at the level where you want him throwing as many passes as brees or brady etc

but you also have to consider the avenues available to a team looking to significantly improve in the week 3 of the season

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)

Passing league or no, T-Rich is really good, much better than average, he's just been playing behind an awful o-line for running backs. He'll be great on the Colts, which is a shame because I'd feel a lot better about this trade if the draft pick didn't pick was a bit earlier than in the 20s.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:21 (twelve years ago)

i think grigson had a really terrible offseason but i like this trade just fine

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:22 (twelve years ago)

i don't get the sense that the colts offensive line is partic good for running backs?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)

the browns have a much better line, but i guess indy at least has a qb so the other team can't put 11 in the box vs richardson anymore

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:36 (twelve years ago)

Colts offense though is setup in more of a traditional passing attack. The third wide out isn't always on the field. They use a FB and often will use two TE. Bradshaw did best when he was a part of a RB tandem in NY, so I don't see this necessarily changing with Indy. Also one good way to improve your defense is controlling the time of possession. I think having some more skills players for Luck is good, as he could use some help.

earlnash, Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:20 (twelve years ago)

sure, but that first round pick could've gotten a player for their shitty defense

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:26 (twelve years ago)

in theory, depends on what was for sale though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:28 (twelve years ago)

well i meant in the draft

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:28 (twelve years ago)

i have to feel like trent is a proven enough talent where he's worth the pick but I don't know Indy well enough to know if they have a particular weakness that would be well served by a top level draft choice in the upcoming season
seems like a huge win for the colts?

One burly voice screamed and that was one of many. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:50 (twelve years ago)

their entire defense sucks

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:51 (twelve years ago)

richardson is not proven at all, cmon now. his track record consists of one okay season in a bad offense. indy is gambling with a first round pick that they really need to use elsewhere that a. they can provide a better environment for him to perform in and b. he will actually improve to the next level given the opportunity. and arguably even if the gamble pays off the price still wasn't worth it. this is the kind of move you make for the one piece that you hope is going to make you a contender. they could've traded that first for '97 barry sanders and they still aren't winning shit with that defense.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 September 2013 04:23 (twelve years ago)

their defense is pretty fuckin average though yeah

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 September 2013 05:11 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, the thing is that, no matter how bad their defense might be, they still want to add offensive protection before anything else. Luck was sacked like 50+ times last year and things have actually looked a little worse this season. So, even if Richardson is a top-level talent who could hypothetically run well enough to open up the passing game, the OLine won't be good enough to provide that opportunity. So, Colts end up in the same situation as a week ago, just with another rb to share watch the OLine suck. Like, they can fill up the skill positions with whomever, but if there's no OLine, it doesn't matter.

W/o having looked at his advanced stats, I'm hoping Richardson helps with redzone / short yardage plays, somewhere the Colts have been hurt so far this season. Also hope this means we won't see Donald Brown try to block anyone again from here on out.

Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Thursday, 19 September 2013 13:24 (twelve years ago)

It's not madness to believe Andy Reid is going to take his Chiefs into Philly tonight and win, is it? Unless it comes down to a case of clock management, that is.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

i feel like defenses that really on their strength up front will struggle the most the adapt to kellyball. kc's good pass rush in particular is going to be chasing shadows and get gassed by the tempo and play count. i think teams will need a bit of explosion on offense to overtake the eagles which thanks to their shortcomings on that side of the ball means that you don't need to bring much, cf rivers to eddie royal, but the only element of the kansas offense right now that rates more explosive than an indoor firework is jamaal charles, and i don't know if that's enough.

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 September 2013 03:37 (twelve years ago)

i can't really figure out if kelly had a weird gameplan or if kansas did something to force his hand, but philly have played this game on offense exactly as kansas would've wanted - vick dropping back and trying to make throws into good man coverage that he is uncomfortable with, in the face of pretty consistent pressure. meanwhile, kcc has an excitement-free offense, limited but few mistakes, and their defense looks every bit good enough to compensate for those limitations. net they are probably not quite good enough to get past denver but i can't wait to see those teams play.

andy reid has to lose the utility belt tho, fucking hell

FCC (c what i did there), explain how friday night games can't be legally broadcast?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_Broadcasting_Act_of_1961

Gatemouth, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

The Atlantic recently published a fantastic breakdown of NFL broadcasting and stadium deals: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/10/how-the-nfl-fleeces-taxpayers/309448/

Gatemouth, Friday, 20 September 2013 19:18 (twelve years ago)

The law has been interpreted to include the so-called "blackout rules" which protect a home team from competing games broadcast into its home territory on a day when it is playing a game at home, and from having to broadcast games within its home market area that have not sold out. It also, in effect, protects high school football and college football game attendance by blacking out pro football games locally on Friday evenings and Saturdays during those sports' regular seasons; these measures effectively outlawed the broadcasting (and, in practice, the playing) of NFL games on those days, since virtually all of the country is within 75 miles of at least one high school game on every Friday night in September and October.
This portion of the act has since been partially circumvented; the NFL extended its season in 1978 to allow several weeks of Friday night or Saturday games if the league so wished.

so i guess they could if they wanted to, they'd just have to flex some muscle?

I’m a sophisticated guy, I like sophisticated music (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)

that great atlantic article, by TMQ guy gregg easterbrook, is where i found out about the friday night law. and, yeah, i guess if the NFL flexed its muscles it could probably do anything it wanted to. but it probably has no real interest in fucking with high school and college football, 'cause they're part of its ecosystem.

There was some pretty big wins this week. Got to give props to Indy, as they played a heck of a game all around. Kept the penalties down, controlled the ball and didn't turn it over, that is a pretty good recipe for success. Their defense was tight.

Cincy is obviously talented and coming back to beat Green Bay was pretty impressive too. They cut down on some of the dumb mistakes and they are going to blow some clubs out, as they are pretty good at all points of the game.

Seattle would obviously be the best team in the NFL, let alone NFC at this point. Monday's outcome notwithstanding, I would probably put Denver as the most impressive AFC club on rep, how they looked and what they are going to get back as the season goes on.

KC and Miami's standing are much improved, but will they stay there. NE/Miami games should be interesting if nothing else. I still can't quite KC as a big challenger to Denver, but playing in Arrowhead things can happen.

The Chiefs are trying to Dilfer their way through the season but I'm not sure their defense/running game is that good. Definitely very good tho.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 23 September 2013 06:42 (twelve years ago)

i'm honestly not sure why everyone was so rock solid on the niners, they got worse at the skill positions and taking kaepernick's limited track record as a sure thing going forward makes no sense.

― call all destroyer, Sunday, September 22, 2013 9:05 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

well they won 13 and 11 games in the last two years with appearances in the nfc title game and super bowl

they didn't really get that much worse at the skill positions... at worst boldin is a slight downgrade from crabtree and it's not like you could pin the last two losses on the niners losing mario manningham

the main offensive problem as i see it is that their line hasn't been great... before today gore couldn't run the ball at all and kaepernick has been running for his life all season. they've had one of the best lines in the since harbaugh got there so i'm not sure that was really foreseeable.

also their defense has not been good which... is also totally out of character. patrick willis is hurt, aldon smith and justin smith haven't been impact. i dunno.

two signals that maybe people should've picked up on: 1. SF hasn't done much to improve their secondary (though eric reid looked like a total baller until the suffered a massive concussion last week) and that has hurt them. but then again their secondary has always been a bit weak and they've been fine. 2. they whiffed totally on some high draft offensive draft picks, most notably aj jenkins and lamichael james. they certainly could use an impact WR or RB right about now.

but anyway i still think the niners will win at least 10 games

Just another chapter in the legend of Bryant McKinnie. He was part of the legendary Vikings Sex Cruise, during which he reportedly "[picked] up a naked woman, placed her on the bar in the lounge and commenced to perform oral sex on her"—a move immortalized by Fred Smoot as "runnin' through the okra patch." In 2008 he sparked a Miami nightclub brawl by spitting on a bouncer. Last year he was sued for $375,000 in unpaid strip club bills.

xpost Great helmets - too bad they're wasted on the Jags. At the Buffalo Wild Wings last night, there was one lone Jags fan. He looked so lonely and forlorn; like his trip to that bar wasn't to watch the game, but just to see if he was truly alone in the world.

Neanderthal, Monday, 23 September 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

just took a closer look and i feel like they couldve done better w the two tone thing like instead of just fading black to gold the transition could be incorporated w the logo, like one line that has the logo in silhouette and also demarcates the colors

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 23 September 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

I mean I really kind of dug the Jaguars from the Garrard era, the almost-70s styled team that didn't play a flashy brand of football, but managed to win games in grind it out fashion, or even the Brunell era (ok except for one game), but yeah the product they're limping out there now....
