these seem like the interesting games w/ playoff relevance:
Pittsburgh at Cleveland - winner of this is kinda sorta still in itTampa Bay at Detroit - tampa have played very well 3 weeks in a row. seems like a horrible banana skin for detroit hoping to win that divisonN.Y. Jets at BaltimoreSan Diego at Kansas City - i think now that san diego has decided to lose every week they have played themselves out of contention but this should be the last ritesCarolina at Miami - miami kind of have to win thisIndianapolis at Arizona - really interesting matchup, which is weird because one of the teams is arizonaDallas at N.Y. Giants - terrible game obv but a giants loss surely puts an end to their resurrectionDenver at New England

im curious if the resdkins, @ home and in primetime can do enough/anything to give the 9ers a game; prob not but who knows
also chi/stl is mildly interesting - ramz need to give tavon austin the full percy harvin treatment & get him like a dozen plus touches a game but maybe thats too much for schottenheimer to figure out

Last week a Wayne Fonte's 7-8, for season 107-55
New Orleans at Atlanta - Last week I missed on both of these clubs. Saints pulled one out last week and the Falcons really kinda suck. Saints should walk but this has become a rivalry game, so I think ATL should come out and play with some pride. Definitely a matchup that shows a complete flip for these two teams a year later. Pittsburgh at Cleveland - That Steelers/Lions game first half was pure Techmo bowl. I got to say the Pittsburgh defense came out and played with some pride in the second half or the Lions O was tired from all that running around in the first half. It's sad that the Browns are so absolutely sad at QB as for the second year in a row, their defense is really, really good. You put Alex Smith on this club and they are a playoff team. The game is passing and if you don't have at least a competent passing game, you are not any good.Tampa Bay at Detroit- Bucs QB put up a heck of a stat line. Let's see him do it a again. Well Detroit is definitely better than the old days, but this club seems to have a knack of pulling a loss out of victories jaw. Lions should win, they have to be a more talented club but I'd believe it if the Bucs give them a good game. Minnesota at Green Bay - GB is pretty much the illustration on how much a QB means. Packers with Rodgers are one of the best clubs in football even with their skills players hobbled. Without Mr. Discount Double-Check they suck. I'll take GB to win, as they have to keep any playoff business happening. Minnesota - same thing as other clubs - no decent QB - you suck.Jacksonville at Houston - Jville's just got problems. Houston is a mess and really injured, but they still should win. Jville's best shot to get a win left maybe.N.Y. Jets at Baltimore- Bmore is really ugly, but they should win this one.San Diego at Kansas City - Chiefs. Chicago at St. Louis- Bears but that Ram defense can be a grinder. Turnovers in this game will be big with 2 backup QBs going.Carolina at Miami- Panthers should and need to win. That said, they got to prove they can go execute this kind of game on the road with regularity. The good clubs get the job done nearly every week.Indianapolis at Arizona- This is a good game and I hope it is on TV around here. Cards finally got smart and got them a decent QB which made their offense competent and with some of the talent they had on defense now they are a contender. Indy's D is solid but can get grinded on a bit. The offense seems to start slow but when they got it rolling, they just eat the clock and wear out defenses. I'm going Indy as a homer.Tennessee at Oakland - Who knows. I can't figure either of these clubs. I guess Titans.Dallas at N.Y. Giants - I'm going Giants as I really would rather hear a bunch of Cowboys not living up to expectations instead of Cowboys win a big one in a major market stories on ESPN.Denver at New England- Whew...NFL really does know what it is doing on the tv schedule. I'm going NE more on them getting beat and needing a win. You know when you are a fan of a club over a player when the player leaves the club you wanted then goes to another team and you just don't fell compelled to follow the player.San Francisco at Washington- Niners will grind Washington into the dust or Harbaugh is going to freak out and start destroying things. Basically you take out Kaepernicks running game and he's just not that productive.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 23:26 (eleven years ago)
Chicago at St. Louis- Bears but that Ram defense can be a grinder. Turnovers in this game will be big with 2 backup QBs going.
McCown and Clemens have both been playing better than several starters in the league, imo.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 23:28 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, I got to wonder after watching so many young QBs totally crash and burn whether you will see more vets around to get some work. The thing is the money has gotten so out of wack, clubs really can't take two QBs that make much money.
It's not totally unusual for a QB to figure it out later in a career. Rich Gannon is probably the last one that went from journeyman to really great.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 04:53 (eleven years ago)
I cant believe McCown but then again Trestman is some sort of QB guru. Bears got so lucky last week with the whole division tanking.

“We as officials have always been taught, for a ball to be uncatchable, it has to be clearly out of the field of play or it has to be a kind of — I probably shouldn’t say this — a Tim Tebow-type pass that lands 15 yards in front of you,” Daopoulus said.

The only question I have about that Dr. Z thing is ... how did he write his interior monologue if he can't write or speak?
― polyphonic, Thursday, 21 November 2013 00:11 (eleven years ago)
That Dr. Z film is one of the best things I have ever seen by NFL Films.
― earlnash, Thursday, 21 November 2013 00:12 (eleven years ago)
He didn't. His wife probably worked with a couple writers and ran stuff by him until a script was settled on.

It really sounds like him.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 21 November 2013 03:22 (eleven years ago)
I met Dr. Z and his wife pre-stroke at a bar/restaraunt. He was surprised i recognized him. I lobbed all sorts of questions at him about what he'd seen throughout his years in the NFL, it was a phenomenal experience for me. He was picking up takeout and i was just drinking, but he was really into the conversation and i learned a ton. I think he had the stroke about a year later. I was devastated when i heard it, this guy was great.

I guess Jerry Jones said that Garrett will be back next year. I figure you can look at it a couple ways.
1. Jerry Jones really is the head coach, the offense has been good so Garrett returns.2. This is just the crazy thing Jerry sez before he fires you and goes try to hire someone else.
― earlnash, Friday, 22 November 2013 00:31 (eleven years ago)

― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 22 November 2013 02:35 (eleven years ago)
That is a pro attitude by Michael Vick. Then again, this is a guy that knows that perhaps getting benched for a player that is doing well is not the worst thing that can happen to you as an NFL player. The guy is also 33 and has some wear on his body. Even if you don't make him your primary QB, the guy is still pretty decent player and could be used in some really interesting ways for a clever coach like Chip Kelly.

The Dr Z monologue is a nice recreation of his voice, but it's not him, it's a projection of what he might want to say.
He's way too aphasic to explain what he's trying to say (or even acknowledge reliably whether someone's guess is reliably correct) when he says "when-when-when". The bit where that's subtitled to present his memories of 1956, as if that's what he's trying to say, is dishonest -- there'd be no way for him to communicate anything that complex and abstract using a monosyllable.
Judging from his right sided weakness (decreased right facial movements, inability to move the right hand) he's had a big stroke in the territory of the left MCA. Some aphasics are nearly mute but have mostly preserved comprehension (Broca's aphasia), but comprehension usually tracks the ability to read (and they say he can't), so he's almost certainly got severe global aphasia.
Patients like this can often say "yes" or "no" but don't usually do so reliably enough to communicate. If I ask them a series of questions ("is this a post office? is this an airport? is this a hospital?") all in the same tone of voice, their "yes" and "no" answers are not accurate. Families tend to believe their loved ones can understand more than that (because they communicate non-verbally, both in expression and understanding, and are motivated to interpret their answers as charitably as possible). Even then, most of them would hesitate to attribute an entire essay to the patient as if it was his or her own voice.
Not sure I'm happy with the way this is presented (especially the "don't pity me" ending). It probably gives false hope to other families facing this (terrible) situation.
― Plasmon, Friday, 22 November 2013 06:22 (eleven years ago)

i hope steven gets a fresh start somewhere, he seems like a hard worker and he has the talent but the damage has been done here, and honestly i came into the season thinking the ball security concerns w/him were way overblown
― call all destroyer, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:23 (eleven years ago)
well they were, he was being written off on the basis of 2 fumbles. i'd say we have more data now.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:24 (eleven years ago)
can they not get him to always have both hands/arms on the ball? and like bench him if he is carrying one handed, not when he fumbles. i don't know anything about the mechanics of being a running back so maybe not.

re: welker, he's still good and murdered a couple teams this year, but his drops seem like they've been going up annually. i'm curious to get some info on how the pats covered him, looked like it was arrington at least part of the time and i wonder if familiarity in practice and whatnot played into his poor game.

― polyphonic, Monday, 25 November 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago)
decker is not a legit 2, and will be average at best somewhere else next year. welker is great, with occasional lapses.
julius thomas' production is for real- he sat for two years because for all his upside, he is an unreliable blocker, even now.

The Pats just don't put money into players at that age of their career. They wait until they are older and get the 'I want a ring' discount. Welker wasn't the first and definitely won't be the last good vet that left that had good football left in them.

Crazy thing about Welker is that you identify him as one of the name Pats and he never won a ring there.
I guess Brady and Wilfork are about the only two I can think off the top of my head that is left on the Pats that won a Superbowl.
― earlnash, Monday, 25 November 2013 23:36 (eleven years ago)
The crazy thing about Brady's career is he won like 3 Superbowls in his first 5 years and really when he got statistically phenomenal at QB was after the championships.
