I'm pulling for the Broncos, but tbh I want to see Blount run for 10 tds this weekend.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 00:19 (eleven years ago)

I would much rather see the Broncos play the Seahawks. I greatly suspect we will see the Patriots play the 49ers instead. My preferences are rarely honored in these matters.

Conflicting reports on whether or not candidates have been calling Chud for the inside poop on the organization. I'd like to think they are calling him, and he's telling them it's a fucking circus.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 04:40 (eleven years ago)

lol espn reporting that 'nashville being a better place to live' was a factor for whisenhunt apparently. i get that sure maybe in comparison to detroit or cleveland (maybe) but nashville ain't fucking paris. you're in san diego now, use the interest to leverage a raise and wait a year for the miami job to open up if you're so scared of shoveling snow.

balls, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 04:47 (eleven years ago)

the miami job isn't opening up because joe philbin is poised to take the dolphins to 15 straight super bowls thank you very much

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 04:48 (eleven years ago)

seahawks broncos
rooting for 9ers, the only sports franchise i get all swoonful about re: my fandom.

brimstead, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 04:49 (eleven years ago)

even though i think the afc game will be close, and it feels winnable for NE, when i actually think about it i just can't see the way they win that game. and i have been trying, believe me. and tbh i feel exactly the same way about the niners.

i want NE vs seattle. i don't think the pats are equipped to beat either nfc team, so who cares, but i just don't want a harbaugh in a super bowl ever again. and that is the main upside to the fact that it is going to be the boringly obvious seattle vs denver.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 12:55 (eleven years ago)

no idea how you could've watched the broncos dick around for like 75% of the chargers game and not see a possible ne victory.

i know i will regret this statement in the future, but i like the field vs. seattle at a neutral site.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 13:32 (eleven years ago)

yeah denver did look shambolic at times on sunday, and they have kind of trended in that direction a little bit through the season more than being a total one off, but i still feel like when it gets down to it, peyton will score if and when he needs to and that will be enough, especially in denver. i guess i still have unhealed third degree burns from 2006/7. maybe if they pull this off i can finally be healed. lordamercy.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

so i just saw the quotes from payton and colston about how that was supposed to be a designed play at the end of the game. that is worse than colston just having a mental break. you really thought your WR was going to complete a pass to the other sideline?? and the defense was going to what, stand and watch in awe? maybe have someone on the nearside seam or between the numbers or something, give yourself a chance at least. i definitely think teams can do a better job designed end of game plays like that, instead of the improvised chuck around you usually get, and in fact, heresy i know, but i think there is scope to use downfield laterals more too. but you have to at least be a tiny bit realistic, cmon.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 13:53 (eleven years ago)

i figured it was a designed play. what kills me is how often these things happen and the guy with the ball throws a clear forward pass. like, priority one above all else has to be making sure the pass is backwards.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:07 (eleven years ago)

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:30 (eleven years ago)

To play devil's advocate: wasnt firing Cam Cameron and replacing him with Caldwell as OC last year the turning point of the Ravens season?

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:54 (eleven years ago)

Caldwell is not an inspired choice, but he's okay and they could've done far worse.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

he's a good example of a great coordinator that makes for an awful HC (see also: McDaniels, Josh)

frogbs, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)

great coordinator? what has he done apart from riding peyton to one good season? his impact in giving the ravens a post-season boost last year was probably more in reducing the value of the tape other teams had on their offense than anything else. they were horrible on offense this year.

his biggest achievement was sucking for luck.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:19 (eleven years ago)

Ok, for some reason I was thinking about Wade Phillips. Turns out Caldwell just got hired from college after leading Wake Forest to a dazzling 26-63 record after 8 years.

frogbs, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

He was a good asst. coach for the Colts. He was with them beginnning in 2001. I dont mind the hire.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

The hatcats' new offensive coordinator is only 27 years old.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 23:37 (eleven years ago)

the hatcats' new offensive coordinator is jay gruden, who has a 27 year old intern

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

zimmer is either going to be an amazing head coach or a total disaster. so, a great hire for minnesota i think, because they need a high upside gamble if they are going to get anywhere from where they are now.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)

yeah everything abt him screams "coordinator" but i'd love for that to be wrong. bringing in norvin is a v. good idea.

balls, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:19 (eleven years ago)

Kiper is a moron.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

xp I'd love to see it too but teams seem to prioritize a franchise QB above all else. They're probably right to do so.

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

If Texans take John Football, they own the state (on a pro level). Cowboys are in serious decline, this could really make the Texans a big deal. Most Cowboy fans are serious bandwagoners anyway, i could see this being a massive plus in the marketing area.

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah lol i've been looking at mock drafts for weeks and the nice thing about not needing a qb is that whoever we're projected to pick i react 'o fuck yes, god that'd be awesome if the falcons got him'. obv you can fuck up w/ a safe pick drafting a lineman but it doesn't seem to devastate yr franchise as much as fucking up w/ the wrong qb.

I'm skeptical, there's a real divide between Houston football and everywhere else. I don't see San Antonio switching from a Cowboys town. Rural areas seem more likely.

If Seattle does win it all, it will feel weird. They have been decent but pretty much an also run club for years. It still feels weird to say that "Indianapolis" has had a NFL championship club.

Though man, I got to say if the Niners can go into that loud buzzsaw stadium and win on the road, I got to think the Superbowl against Denver or even NE seems a possible win. Baltimore did it and Pittsburgh did it too, but it's hard to have to win it all on the road.

Niners had a shot and couldn't pull it off. They got two swing and miss seasons going for a title. Eventually injuries and age catches up to clubs and the personnel can turn over quick. Harbaugh had a real good nucleus of a club there, didn't have to add much other than schemes and leadership. SF seemed really talented all the way back to Mike Nolan.

earlnash, Monday, 20 January 2014 03:42 (eleven years ago)

From the archive:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20140120/richard-sherman-seattle-seahawks

Sherman tears open a pack of Fruit Gushers—a kids' snack, though he has no kids—and the syrupy taste transports him from the serenity of summer to the bedlam of fall. See, Sherman gobbles Gushers every Sunday morning during the season, followed by a shower in the dark, followed by a game of catch with Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin. "Time to put on a show," Sherman announces, and Baldwin nods in agreement.

If I was Michael Crabtree, I know what I would use as a public soapbox dig that would be cold blooded. I'd have Crabtree go back to Sherman with "If you were really good player, you would be playing offense and making real cash. I pay my agent nearly as much has you make with my $32 million dollar deal."

I always kind of dug that Mark Cuban pulled out that who really has more scratch on Donald Trump. It's a pretty good diss.

Of course Crabtree would have every free safety and linebacker with his name on it if he did make such a comment.

And if Sherman pulls of a big play in a win at the Superbowl, he might be able to 'ego' his way into some Neon Deion like money. Heck it worked for Reavis, but it also helped that his coach went all weepy on how key he was to their defense.

earlnash, Monday, 20 January 2014 23:26 (eleven years ago)

I'd have Crabtree go back to Sherman with "If you were really good player, you would be playing offense and making real cash. this would do nothing but make Crabtree look bad (especially if you didn't forget that he held out right out of the draft for more money).

I think one of the PTI guys nailed why this is good for everyone - during the next 2 weeks everyone is going to be focused on Peyton and we all know he ain't saying anything interesting. Sherman, on the other hand...

In hindsight it turned out to not be too bad a move, but at the time is seemed like a desperate and careless action. They completely lucked out re: Richardson regressing as a player in his second year.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah i mean lombardi was on record as a richardson skeptic and had been going on for years about the most important job a gm has is correctly evaluating his own personnel and there was alot of statistical data to suggest that richardson was a bust and a lot of ppl who thought the move reaked of 'win now' desperation on the colts end but you're right, they completely lucked out.

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 02:12 (eleven years ago)

I'd think dumping their coach in that situation is going to haunt Cleveland at least in the short run.

I'd think Rob Ryan is the best guy they could get, long hair and all. They got defensive talent, that is something that guy could work with and make them at least competitive. I'd say after how the Browns bungled this coaching change, they would have to drop some serious guaranteed money to get that guy to go to Cleveland.

earlnash, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 03:14 (eleven years ago)

The other guy that I think the Browns might eventually look into is veteran coach Vic Fangio. That guy has a ton of experience and has coached in the division. It would be like making the Crennel hire again, but Fangio might look at it as his one shot to be a head coach and you never know, it might work, the guy has a lot of experience as a defensive coach and the Browns have talent on that side of the ball.

Sufjan Grafton, Saturday, 25 January 2014 06:50 (eleven years ago)

weird but the specific amount of $7,875 seems to be a very common fine in the NFL, cf:

A pair of receivers - Carolina's Steve Smith and St. Louis' Brian Quick - were fined $7,875 for striking an opponent in the face. Also docked $7,875 were Rams guard Harvey Dahl for a late hit and Panthers safety Mike Mitchell for taunting.

Washington http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG defensive back DeAngelo Hall wasn't ejected or even flagged for his completely unnecessary actions in last Sunday's 20-6 loss to the New York Giants, but the NFL decided to give him a little slap on the wrist anyway. On Friday, it was announced that the NFL had fined Hall $7,875 for "striking" Giants' tackle Will Beatty in the head after the offensive lineman had already suffered a vicious leg fracture.

The NFL fined quarterback Colin Kaepernick $7,875 fine for a facemask penalty in the 49ers' loss Sunday to the Carolina Panthers.

A league spokesman could not answer the last time or how often a quarterback has been fined for such an infraction.

Kaepernick grabbed the facemask of Panthers linebacker A.J. Klein on a second-quarter play that ultimately was recorded as a 14-yard sack, with the Panthers declining Kaepernick's 15-yard facemask penalty.

Panthers safety Quinton Mikell got docked $7,875 for a late-hit on Kaepernick after he slid down on a third-quarter scramble.

RB Fred Jackson fined $7,875 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Bears guard, Kyle Long has been fined $7,875 for his part in a scuffle with St. Louis Rams defensive end William Hayes at the end of a play in the Rams' win Sunday in St. Louis.

Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett was fined $7,875 Friday for stomping the right hand of Rams left guard Chris Williams during the third quarter of the 20-point win.

etc etc
