You can disagree with mods, sure, but behaving like an arsehole to people who volunteer chunks of their time to keep this site alive is not on.

i don't think this needed a separate thread, but while we're here, i think demanding a different standard of civility for dealing with mods as opposed to other posters is a new idea and a poor precedent. with respect, like.

I think, rather than banning posters for beefing with mods qua mods, the beefing posters should be punished with temporary mod powers.

As for the adsense jibe, it would be nice not to have the only options be a) pay for this all myself, b) deal with the huge currency/tax/fees/logistics/stress ball-ache of a yearly fundraiser. But just ftr, whenever it has ever come down to a call between adsense money and the site, the site has always won. The only exceptions are when posts are edited to remove images that have become malware, or posts that would have been nixed anyway.

There are hardly any ads left on the site because everytime Google complains I reduce the areas ads are shown rather than change the content.

There is no rule about being nice to people on ILX that I am aware of. People have always been rude to each other here, and people have always been nice to each other here. If you want to put that rule in place, I think that’s a whole other debate, but it seems pretty clear to me from how things have gone for the past many years I’ve been here is that most things are tolerated between posters short of shit that is obviously beyond the pale. Calling someone a “chickenshit idiot” or whatever is totally not beyond the pale in the context of many other things that have been said here and allowed to stand w/o someone getting hit with a ban.

This is an untrue assertion. One of the reasons I quit modding is because the posting community overturned to the point where the budget-Doms who take any level of call for civility as an attack on their inailiable rights as human beings on a privately-owned message board outnumbered the people who are capable of being adults.

It's disingenuous here to pretend that Stet is "a mod", and not, like the guy who devotes a fuckload of his own time and I believe also some of his money to keep this place going. I think this was possibly a straw-that-broke-the-camels-back moment after what's been quite a stressful few days when it comes to admin-ing this place. Possibly you guys underestimate quite how wearying it is to have to deal with pointlessly petulant little tantrums like this for a prolonged period of time. Personally I just walk away for a while when I get into that state but everyone has their personal sanity threshold and that is sometimes exceeded.

At the end of the day, it's a privilege and not a right to post here and Stet can ban who he wants IMO, because it's very likely that the site literally wouldn't exist without him. That he pretty much never does so is because of the general patience and tolerance that makes him the right person to keep it going, considering previous site runners like Andrew an Graham have pretty much decided to kick the whole thing over whenever it got too much.

Anyway, I don't think I "own" this place but I do feel responsible for it and admin it -- have done for nearly a decade, far longer than anyone else, and for the most part on my own. One of the things I've always said as part of that deal is that there will be mods and I will have their backs. This is not a democracy.

Also FTR though, I have defrocked more mods for abuse of power than I have banned posters for abuse of mods. Maybe that was the wrong way around.

That's not to pretend that I admin in a way that everyone agrees with tho. But since the days of the drama in the LBZC I've offered to set the disenfranchised people up with their own sites: I'll set them up, give them the code, and help their admin out. All they have to do is pay their own bills.

Sure it's not quite giving you the reins of this place, but still, if you want to steal it back just take me up on that and get the users you care about to go with you.

I know we're dealing with the famed Lagoon self-awareness here but let's not pretend he's speaking for anyone other than a relatively small group of people. Speaking as someone who has problems with authority that sometimes border on the pathological, framing appreciation for what stet and the mods do as like kowtowing to the bigwigs is ridiculous. Sure, they make an enviable salary maintaining the site (from which I and others receive a tidy stipend for our continued support of their actions). Of course they're rubbing elbows with the big shots and power players and otherwise deriving all kinds of ancillary benefits as a function of their roles here that offset the hassle of what might otherwise seem a thankless task. But judge not lest etc.

But for serious. Aside from the adulation of my sizeable and vocal fanbase on the board, I don't see where I personally gain anything from positive acknowledgment of stet and the mods other than hoping that it eases stet's finger a little further away from the 'shitcan ILX' button. Would I like to think that ILX is a community where its members have a voice and are basically given free rein as long as they aren't adolescent dickholes about it? Sure. i'm not on board w/ the dark enlightenment but as far as running a message board goes i think a benevolent dictatorship w/ some democratic input (you can complain about modding all you want, you can vote for a sb, etc) is ideal

mostly bc i'm not sure what the alternative is -- program some kind of voting mechanism so that every controversial issue gets put to a boardwide vote? how would that even work - stet bans deej for 30 days and then there are 5 days for everyone to vote whether they want the ban to be upheld and if the vote fails deej is immediately let back in?

One problem with sitewide bannings is that they are always listed on the Admin Log as "x has been banned permanently", even when they are intended to be the shorter stints, so unless a mod puts in a qualifier it looks more dramatic than it is. This could maybe be changed to just "x has been banned"?

It's disingenuous here to pretend that Stet is "a mod", and not, like the guy who devotes a fuckload of his own time and I believe also some of his money to keep this place going. I think this was possibly a straw-that-broke-the-camels-back moment after what's been quite a stressful few days when it comes to admin-ing this place. Possibly you guys underestimate quite how wearying it is to have to deal with pointlessly petulant little tantrums like this for a prolonged period of time. Personally I just walk away for a while when I get into that state but everyone has their personal sanity threshold and that is sometimes exceeded.

At the end of the day, it's a privilege and not a right to post here and Stet can ban who he wants IMO, because it's very likely that the site literally wouldn't exist without him. That he pretty much never does so is because of the general patience and tolerance that makes him the right person to keep it going, considering previous site runners like Andrew an Graham have pretty much decided to kick the whole thing over whenever it got too much.
