Hey Keith!!!

Sounds like you're getting ready to roll out some pretty big changes and I for one am stoked!

The re-tooled search function looks awesome, and thanks for listening to people on admin log, even though I don't really care anymore after a year and a half without it.

three things:

1) can you elaborate on what a "yellow card" will be?

2) can you make sub-board mods able to unban? (you may have mentioned this was coming and i forgot)

2) would it be possible to write the code so that posters could be banned from a specific thread? i think this was part of the old code but i cant remember. i think it would add a new, more moderate level of moderation that wouldn't be as severe as being banned from a whole board or the whole site for a few days. it would let mods do their job and put out fires while hopefully reducing some hand wringing and backlash.

thanks again for all the hard work.

Hey Grady... Thanks, and I have done all that stuff. Yellow card just sticks a message up on your screen for a few days saying that you have been yellow carded and why (well, whatever the mod chooses to fill in).

deeznuts, Friday, 29 August 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

From my point of view, as many people can have broads as want them. I put in two things to help with this, customising site new answers to just show what you want, and colouring board threads on that page, also made there a kind of folder/board structure on the front page so that we can keep it neat and tidy.

Keith, Friday, 29 August 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

hey Keith what about image limits? are we going to get to post more than three per post plzzzzzz

gr8080, Saturday, 30 August 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I should leave that decision to the other mods, but what I have done is to allow it to be configurable on a per board basis (the number of images you can post), so they can sort it from there. I suspect that's a balancing trick, because one man's funny loads of images I suspect is another man's gets on their tits, but it's able to be configured anyway.

You asked about not showing the real user name for logged out users and there are a couple of things there - it's kind of hardish to do but also I'm not sure I want to. I understand why you think it'll be a laugh, but I do worry about the thing appearing intimidating to new users, which was part of my worry around changeable user names in the first instance. It certainly confused the f*** out of me for frankly years on ILX, until I discovered the option to show the login ID. The other thing is that it's a bit harder because I'm not storing the original name separately with a message, it just gets literally stuck into a database field as your current display name plus a bracketed original one; it's not in a separate field, so hard to do, and I don't really want to go into extracting it with text processing, so I'm afraid I'm not keen on that.

Autumn, I'm sure you're right, Though I can try to explain these things. I will try to explain why things are like what they are like, and by all means ask questions. I do think quite hard about this stuff and what I do and why I do it, though obviously some of this stuff is a matter of weighing up a bunch of often opposing factors and making a judgement calls as to what the right thing to do is; some of these factors will not be apparent to most people who use the system (e.g. scalability: having the site not fall over when lots of users are using it).

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I don't have any screen grabs or pretty pictures or anything, but...

What it was, for each view (new answers or new questions) you could get them displayed with the most recent post made (new answers) or the original question (new questions) displayed underneath the title.

It was very good for figuring out the subject matter of the thread when the title was unclear. And also for getting the general gist of what was currently going on on a thread without having to read the whole thing. And thread revives where there's just one new answer, and you want to know if it's a genuine revive or just someone being silly.

This is all very useful stuff if you're at work or your reading time/bandwidth is limited in other ways.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

Hi Keith,

have you made any changes to the URL parsing/linking code? I've been bitten by bugs in it a couple of times this week (trailing slashes, presence of "@" symbol, etc). I could come up with a list of URLs that don't work but perhaps should if it would be useful.

Your pal,

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

Caek, I haven't no. Can't pretend I can 'fix' all issues with auto URL parsing, as there's a fundamental problem at the root of being able to do that; the computer sometimes just cannot decide (neither can a human for that matter and therein lies the problem) where a URL stops, without additional markup to help, but by all means post the URLs and I'll take a look.

Keith, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

All trailing slashes in URLs are unlinked, e.g. http://www.example.com/ should include the trailing slash in the link, but it does not. A url in slash does not necessarily point to the same resource as one without. This seems like it should be easy to fix. Haha seems.

All trailing parentheses too, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_(disambiguation)

Was trying to post the URL which this tinyurl resolves to within img tags yesterday; result was not what was intended, presumably because of the @ symbol.

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also, can you add post preview to you "nice to have but not urgent" list?

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

@ is accepted in the URL expression; maybe I did that after last deploying ILX. The parentheses thing is tricky, since if I accept them as part of a URL, then when you stick a URL in parentheses itself, it will screw up, e.g. (http://www.google.com) would not work, as it'd pick up the last bracket as part of the URL. This is one of the cases where you just have to make a call as to what to include and not.

Sure... What is post preview?

Keith, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, do you mean you get a chance to edit it before posting? What I thought I might do was let people edit their posts for five minutes after posting them or something...

Keith, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

^^ huge "jokes bruv" potential

onimo, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

xp, otm. editing posts would be a big change. just a preview would be fine. live ajax/DHTML preview would be even radder, but above and beyond.

I guess the thing with trailing parentheses is to look for the opening one and check if it's before the start of the link, in which case it's not a part of the URL.

and here's that complicated URL in an img tag, not working:

http://sta✧✧✧.g✧✧✧.c✧.uk/Guardian/world/gallery/2008/sep/01/republicans2✧✧✧.palin/GD8643✧✧✧@This-undated-photo-pr-3✧✧✧.j✧✧

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

no editing / no previewing - these are two of the things that make ilx essentially ilx

ice crӕm, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

editing, absolutely, don't need it, don't want it. but would we really lose that much if people stopped making mistakes with broken links/bbcode?

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

It's kind of harder than that with the brackets thing. ((http://www.google.com(this is part of the URL) but this last bracket isn't). Hmm. This is the reason the anchor tag exists, or the browser would just interpret the URL and sort it out. It's basically unfixable, although if you think you've the answer, by all means send me code please! I've been through this one a lot, and I'm afraid it's trickier than people think; this is why most URL parsers are shit. I should be able to sort the email thing easily enough though, though that could have some unintended side effects (showing email addresses if they're part of logins to URLs), but probably not all that likely. Preview would be OK too.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

xxxp, seems like the most common parentheses case (wikipedia URLs) should be fixable. your example is a real edge case. I'm not even sure what's supposed to be going on there, so i'm not surprised a regular expression gets confused. but yeah, I know way less about this than you. just wanted to check you were aware.

Hope trailing slashes will be fixed. They should be assumed to be part of the URL. No one writes http://www.google.com/http://www.yahoo.com.

p.s. http://littlecottonrabbits.typepad.co.uk/my_weblog/images/2007/10/29/rose_thanks.jpg

caek, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

I just tested those in urlview, which is just a regexp for parsing text looking for URLs I use. It only got the last one right (including the trailing slash). I officially believe you now that this is a hard problem :-)

The regexp is (this should really push the square bracket fix!):

.,;<>":]

lol at link to "Background information and documentation"

caek, Friday, 12 September 2008 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the problem with URL parsing is not that it's a hard problem; it's that it is an impossible problem. It's because there are many cases where it is impossible to work out, even for a human, as to whether or not a certain character is meant to be part of the URL, or part of the text that comes after the URL. This is why the <a href..> syntax exists. If it were possible in all cases to determine a URL from surrounding text, then the <a href..> notation would be redundant.

Even that link to the massive regular expression will just be one that validates that a URL matches what presumably the URL RFC defines as being a URL; it still won't be able to distinguish them from surrounding pieces of text.

Also, the same error occurs for links in the OP of a poll thread. Which is a shame, I had a great Big Country poll ready to roll out.

three weeks pass...

hey keith! i assume you're not posting much because you're incredibly busy, but on the off chance you're looking at the ILX code, is there any chance you could add an unbookmark link to the top or bottom of bookmarked threads?

caek, Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

thanks for the unbookmark link dude!

banned users can still send webmail to non-banned users?

harbl, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know what i mean by that. it's just an observation!

harbl, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

Does it? I can't actually remember what banned users can and can't do - do you think they shouldn't be able to send webmail?

Keith, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

well this particular email was pretty harmless, just gabbneb being gabbneb

i can see why it would be a good idea for them not to be able to send webmail, though i guess it's not a big deal

harbl, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, I'll take a look at some point.

Mr. Que, Friday, 19 June 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

I only just thought to check after seeing Harbl's comment. It was from a different user name but definitely him as he referenced something that I said about him.

Fennec fox which does grooming (ENBB), Friday, 19 June 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

So, perhaps the biggest takeaway from this would be "stop talking about people who have been banned unless you'd like to receive emails from them".

Which, you know, the mods have said in the past and tried to enforce and were told we were being pricks over it.

Just wanted to say that this is true for what he sent me too.

Yes Dan you're probably right. I couldn't help it! Lesson learned.

Gabneb - If you see this. I am sorry I said you wear capris if, in fact, you do not.
