I really don't know what the answer is here, I mean I was initially against the suggest ban thing, but the kind of mean-spirited ganging-up that I was convinced would happen is actually not going on at all

I do also agree that there should be an age-out process for the suggest ban tally, like each vote should only last 60 days or so. of course at the end of that 60 days that user could vote again, so if there's a bunch of people you really annoy daily, you won't get much help

Suggest ban is good, but votes should age out, and Tom's idea about the number needed for ban decreasing by half each time or whatevs is good. I don't think that bans should be perm, but in addition to making the number needed decrease each time, why not lengthen the ban period by a factor of 2 each ban?

It's not moderator tampering that's the issue there - it's user tampering. As you know, I have actually coded the thing that and waht is asking for (a 'suggest ban' button that clocks up votes and then just automatically bans someone when the votes reach a certain level). I agree with you though, it would all go wrong really quickly.

Okay, so now Gabbneb got banned too. As far as I know he hasn't really done anything wrong, at least nothing that would've gotten him banned according to the guidelines we used to have. Shouldn't the suggest ban function be deleted or radically changed by now, or do we really want to turn ILX into a board where only the consensus opinion is allowed and everyone else will get banned?

the problem with suggest ban is that it works on an outlier basis. there's a bell curve to the ILX user base that I will crudely sketch as follows:

completely offensive ... general dicks ... occasionally annoying ... cool folks ... wouldn't hurt a fly

I'd say the bulge is in "occasional annoying". there a general tone of acid wit & vitriol on the board that is one of its hallmarks. it's a blessing and curse. suggest ban first takes the outliers in the completely offensive category, then it starts working on the general dicks. eventually the norm starts shifting and the occasionally annoying start being taken out (which seems to be the point we are at). and once that threshold is passed you have normalized yourself into a stepford board of quiet, well behaved folk (i.e. boring).

maybe that's the suggest ban supporters' utopian/authoritarian fantasy, but most of my favorite posters fall in the general dick to occasionally annoying spectrum (dan, schef, ethan, morbz, shakey) and I'd hate to see them get "disappeared". and those of you holding up lj as the poster child of suggest ban potty-training must have missed his latest superlative lapse in judgment on the ILP board. I can't believe dude can avoid getting banned again, and though he's a taste I've never particularly acquired, it's kind of a pointless routine to ban him if he's just going to come rolling back again like a low impulse control bad penny.

Yeah, based on what people have said on various threads it seems only certain people use the suggest ban function regularly, whereas the majority of people here probably don't really care about it at all, which means that the particular tastes of a certain subset of posters decide who gets banned.

i can't see how you'd be comfortable drawing general trends from this out of however many hundred/thousand regular posters.

and it's not like all regular users are equally allotted to the 5 groups you're using for example- the vast majority would definitely fall into the 'no harm' or 'cool posters'.

and none of the three banned users would come anywhere close (not an attack on LJ or gabbnebb, tbh they'd probably admit that they've pushed buttons far above the average poster)

so i don't really see what statistical analysis of three exceptional cases is proving here

now, I'm willing to say How I Met Your Mother is the Friends of today.
BUT, and this is a big BUT - HIMYM is AWESOME while FRIENDS is PUTRID CRAP HANGING FROM A DEAD OBESE MAN'S DECREPIT TOENAIL.
The comparison is that it's a real life comedy sitcom about friends and sex (usually). The sex scenes in Friends we're all uncomfortable because all the characters we're hard to relate to since they acted out the lowest forms of life, personality, and humor. Meanwhile, I can watch How I Met My Mother with my family (which includes a little sister who started watching it around age 14 I believe) and not feel uncomfortable because the humor is class act and the sex is taken a little more seriously. Personally I just hated seeing Friends and their sexcapades just because I hated them so much and even I was maybe 15 at the time and just found it unrealistic and disturbing (because I hated the characters - and only sort of liked Joey Phoebee and maybe Channler.)

back before i understood how it worked i would click to SB the same people constantly.

I operate under the assumption that the system might "forget" (like how you can sometimes vote in polls more than once) and feel it is my duty to sb the same fucker every chance I get. It's like a pavlovian reaction to every post of theirs I see.

shit man, just found this thread on accident while searching for a LOLS thread. heh, over the year I've been here I've gradually learned to post less idiotic shit. the rebel flag thread was my first post on ilx and my first time at ilxor. than I made a couple threads where I listed bands I like and tried to get people to suggest other bands I might like. they didn't go over very well.

oh and the new shoes thread is when I got barred from noise - I'm still barred.

but yeah, if half of you think that I'm funny then I guess I'm halfway funny and that's good enough for me :)

srsly though i think tuomos getting banned is a shame. he tends to get things moving on the slow days. tho obv lots of other people feel otherwise. in some ways he's almost reasonable to a fault, like he just keeps going until things make sense to him, which does gradually happen from time to time, its just that he is always coming from a different place and wont ever concede his position. then again maybe hes trolling. but i enjoy watching him make people go crazy.

I respect Tuomas in the same way I do Geir - he has a consistent position, and is often reasonable and ALWAYS polite, even in the face of extreme hostility and mockery. He doesn't deserve 90% of the shit that's thrown at him.

on a broad level, i feel really bad about tuomas, because he was a positive poster and was very polite, as trayce said. but the dude was fucking insufferable sometimes when he would go on about 77 or (lol irony) suggest bans or other meta stuff. so on a micro level, i dont feel bad about suggest banning him because he genuinely has no idea when to stfu.

i would just like to say that for once i am totally with the mods on this, today we saw that the system really works. i have nothing against Tuomas and hope he isn't gone permanently, but honestly the guy is exasperating and i would be totally fine with a few weeks or months without him.

Surely someone has suggested an alternative where one can also cancel out suggest bans...y'know, making it like currency. 50sbs in debt? A month in internet prison. 50 anti-sbs? A month in the ilx hall-of-fame. This is probably difficult to code.
