I mean I know no one is really clamoring for my opinion on this, but I guess today is your special lucky day.

First off, I admit there is probably some other level of personal grudges and other shit going on via AIM and email (i never really email or IM with other ILXors except like dan, ned, and JJ a few times).

But for me these last couple of weeks with all the bans has been pretty deflating. I understand that everyone understood the rules, and this is policy, etc etc....but to me the larger question is what the policies and bans are accomplishing?

To me, and this would even be with regards to like gabbneb or burt stanton (if he is banned you need a scorecard to keep track of them), is that yeah sometimes I would go nuts on some insane shit that tuomas would say like the masturbating in front a baby thing, but you know...those were MEMORABLE threads, they had a lot of LOLS, and for me the trainwreck argument threads like the recent Kevin Smith one are WAY more memorable and fun to me than say some polite watercooler bullshit.

I guess it's how you conceive of the board, for some it seems to be like a dinner party for friends and there's an instinct to ban anyone that disturbs the peace...

for me it's more of a online bullshit session, with people having fun, talking smack,...I don't really see how the board as a whole will be MORE interesting or fun to read and post on without some of these "controversial" personalities.

What has been accomplished? Not much from my perspective.

Like okay I def got along w/ethan and I could totally understand that he was a total prick at times to ppl..but..

i am basically here cuz i'm a music nerd and ethan was super passionate in a real way about music and the stuff he liked, and he had a genuine deep knowledge of the stuff he liked. could he be overly abrasive sometimes, sure? but honestly how many other people on ILM have such a weird/awesome/unique musical worldview...like he'd go from freaking out about indie rap to posting a thread for Ned about some obscure A-Ha techno remix?

Even Dom, who's clearly batshit, was funny and entertaining! I mean, let's be honest we're not exactly forming deep relationships with everyone here, it's a bit of "hey let's kill a slow day at work" and dom made me laugh, with him, at him, whatever.

I would say the same about gabbneb...he was interesting to me.

At the current rate, it seems like every marginally interesting/controversial poster is going to be gone.

M@tt, the thing missing from your position is the fact that mods can undo bans. The only thing that makes a permanent ban permanent is that it has no automatic expiration date; mods can reverse them at any time.

I would be surprised if most of the people you list aren't back on the board before April. And yes, there are some interactions going on that are not in your posting experience.

This is the way I've been looking at it; that's not a formal policy so I don't feel comfortable stating definitively "yes, this is what it is supposed to do" but, quite frankly, I don't think anyone wants a situation where no one can reverse a ban automatically enacted by software.

Perhaps I should have stated my position on this elsewhere; I didn't because a) I am not "the leader of the mods" and don't want to speak for them without reaching some form of consensus, and b) the point seems self-evident and obvious to me and I thought it would be kind of insulting to everyone's intelligence to state it.

so maybe the 51 should trigger a mod discussion about the poster and course of action rather than an automatic ban and the mods having to say "yeah we're taking a look at it"?

cause as long as those automatic bans are happening we're gonna be having regularly scheduled ILX clusterfuck days.
