Modding of I love TMI

ok i know this is kind of weird because i am a mod and all, but i wanted to do this as a poster in general. i have serious reservations about the way that I love TMI is getting modded. As the board that is supposed to be a place where people can openly discuss some serious stuff if they want to (yeah and also lots of poop questions, but lets stick to the point at hand), i think that modding with an iron fist and shutting down discussions simply because people disagree with your opinions is completely inappropriate. If this is unacceptable to masonic boom, i suggest she step down as a mod of that board.

It is what it is. It's my board and it always has been. I don't agree with your site-wide moderation Justen, but hey, I've learned that if you protest against that, you get banned. Sub boards are a law unto themselves, always have been.

It's my board. If I don't want to read yet another wonderfully handled ILX thread about gender and determinism - ESPECIALLY from a guy who only discovered clitoral anatomy - literally - yesterday, OK, well, that's the one place I get to say I don't have to.

(note: i am assuming that the second deletion that just occurred was done by MB, but since ILTMI modding appears not to show up in the admin log (which i vaguely remember being decided at some point for some reason) i cant be sure of that, and if a different mod did i then i still object to the decision, but i rescind my direct statement about MB retaining mod privs)

also, no one asked you to step down because of anything kenan did or said - i think the point being raised was that you should step down because you're a shitty mod, and that is true. i suppose if you claim ownership over the board, then you're not really moderating it at all and can do whatever you want. if that's the case, i'd like to request that another forum be created so ILTMI discussion can take place apart from your will to power.

oh hey can i get my own board? bc there's a lot of times i don't like shit ppl post to threads, so i'd like a board where i can talk about what i define as suitable and delete posts or lock threads that i don't like.

the point here is that iltmi was at least partially set up to give people a safe and if they wished anonymous (dont know if this is still the case) place to post about stuff. this style of modding is completely inconsistent with that idea.

also, the reason that iltmi is "your board" is because you volunteered to surrender your previous board because it wasnt getting used. this doesnt give you any inalienable right to suddenly subvert discussion that you dont like. if you cant agree with that, i suggest that you can have your old board reinstated and not mod iltmi.

Start a new board and call it "I Love chill TMI" and make me the mod, I won't ban anyone for anything no matter what!

i mean, is the mod of ILNFL going to start deleting threads every time someone posts a negative comment about his/her favorite team? bottom line, if there is a board like 1p3 that isn't dedicated to a specific topic and is more of a playground for a group of ilxors, then fine, treat it like "your" board, etc. but a board that was made for discussion of certain topics shouldn't be subject to the personality swings and intolerance of the mod, and if it is, the mod should be removed.

i really shy away from board lawyering like this, but ffs, i like reading the ILTMI forum, and it sucks to have it hijacked by it's self-proclaimed "owner."

You're all right that ILTMI should be freely-spoken and lightly-modded, but what I am saying is that personal circumstances REALLY ought to be taken into consideration when dealing with this. I strongly believe the issue should be dropped until (if) it reoccurs. Ordinarily I'd agree (and, yes, Kate's been known to get tetchy before), but such has been the apocalyptic well of doom she's evinced, and such has been her cycle of self-destructive, manic-depressive messageboard-stirring of late (not just ILX) that I think she should just be tolerated for a few days. But I am callow, and maybe someone else has a better, more informed idea?

Yeah, some sitewide mod closed it for unregistered posters because of spam, but I suggested we should check out if ILTMI mods can handle deleting spam, and I got the idea that unregistered posting would be allowed again, but I think this never happened... Or did it?

I still think you should allow unregistered posting and see if us mods can handle any spam, but if the spam gets out of hand, then you can change it back to registered only. But for this to work it'd probably be good to appoint one or two more mods for ILTMI, in different time zones possibly. Are ENBB and I now the only mods there? Didn't Roxy get her mod privileges back?

Well, the other side to that is that if people really wanted to post something they were uncomfortable posting under their real government ilxor name, they could always create a sock. Like if they reallllly wanted to tell their side of the anal-fisting story or whatever.

The original mods were Kate, me, and Roxy. Roxy's mod powers were taken away when she banned Kate, I was under the assumption they'd been given back to her, but I'm not sure anymore. And I guess Kate's mod rights have been revoked, since you're a mod now.

I don't think ILTMI needs that many mods as it is. But my idea was that it should be opened to unregistered posters again, and in that case there probably should be a couple more mods, on different time zones, in case there'll be spam.

Varies by board, but the range is zero to four mods per board. Current ILTMI mods are Tuomas, Kate and ENBB.

Was there tons of spam last time? I mean, I've posted on ILTMI under a different username. It's not that complicated to log out and back in and if the spam really was that unmanageable maybe it's best left as is?

there was a ton of spam (and some anon abuse leveled at other ILXORS) last time around, and lots of it ended up getting cleaned up by sitewides, which is why ILTMI went non-anon last time, and that may just be an unfortunate truth again

also in case this is slipping through the cracks here, Kate currently has mod powers on ILTMI - i think we still need to hash out the issues upthread but you know time zones and other countries and stuff.

I believe that Kate still had mod privileges on ILTMI too. Maybe she banned herself? I missed whatever happened - sorry I can't be more helpful in regards to that.

I don't know guys. Like I said, I had nothing to do with it but it does actually look like you can ban yourself from a board as a mod. That said, I'm not going to hit "ban user" and actually see what happens. Maybe someone who knows more can be more helpful. In the meantime if anyone has any issues on ILTMI and I'm don't seem to be around and posting you can always webmail me. :D

Okay, I read the thread that apparently lead to all this, so here's my two cents:

Kate, I know that Kenan can sometimes make insensitive comments, and I understand the need to have a women-only spaces, or threads. (I'm all for the "No boys allowed" thred on 1P3.) And I have nothing against deleting pointless "funny" remarks from a serious thread. However, in this case it didn't look like Kenan had actually done anything wrong yet (it's not like he's always insensitive), so pre-emptively banning him from the thread was unnecessary. And it didn't look like the other female posters on the thread wanted it to be women only, so their wishes should've been respected too.

Basically, I don't think Kate should be banned from ILTMI, but at this point she shouldn't be an ILTMI mod. I thought that already happened when ENBB was made a mod, but apparently not. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh Kate, but it looks like the consensus on what ILTMI should be like goes against you mod decisions. I completely understand the need to have a forum to discuss stuff safely, with no fear of any unwanted comments, but ILTMI is still supposed to be an open forum. (Though I have to say the discussion there has mostly been quite good-natured, with little need for moderation.) There are other places on the net where you can have safe discussions. In fact, I'm all for you having your own subboard again, where you are the single mod, and can regulate the threads differently than on ILTMI. ILTMI was never supposed be like IDME, but if the site mods can create a new IDME, I think that would be a reasonable solution to this whole problem.

K de-modded and removed herself from TMI because the mods she contacted didn't reply to her explanations of why she mods ILTMI the way she does. There's an angry and depressed post on her blog entitled "burn the witch" which you're not going to like if you don't like that kind of thing so I'm not going to link to it here.

I still want to know if the software behind the board was working properly when the thread ban was attempted. I know it's glitched for me in the past and I want to rule out that it glitched here.

if you ban yourself or are banned while you have mod privileges you can come back and ban others, at least on subboards, or at least you used to be able to, but thats all you can do

Assuming the software was working correctly, one of three things happened:

- Another ILTMI mod unbanned Kenan; I don't see what either would gain from it, plus both have explicitly stated they didn't and I believe them.

- A sitemod unbanned Kenan; so far, no one is taking credit for this. If someone DID do this, IMO that person should not be a sitemod anymore. No exceptions.

- Someone's figured out how to hack the site. Kind of can't do anything about that unless we can actually prove it and recreate how it was done.

Basically, because the admin log was turned off for ILTMI, there's no record of who did what on the board. The simplest explanations are either a software failure (ie, the site gave the incorrect impression that Kenan was banned, or some subsequent action intended to do something else cleared out Kenan's ban), a user error (ie, when Kate attempted to ban Kenan, she mistakenly clicked off of the confirmation page) or a sitemod failure (a sitemod decided to rescind the ban without, at a bare minimum, notifying the other sitemods as to the reasoning behind the decision). At the moment, we don't have enough information to investigate the first two and no one is fessing up on the third option.

Board policy in recent years has shifted away from giving people private sub-boards. I am not against the idea of a women-only board but I would like to see more support for it from the community before creating it. I have no real opinion on who would moderate it; that should be decided by the people using it.

Who unbanned him from that thread is the question, I think. Kate, ENBB and Tuomas were the ILTMI mods, and they didn't do it. None of the sitewide mods know who did it. It was his unbanning from that thread that upset Kate. I, for one, did not jump in and re-ban Kenan from that thread because I prefer to find out what's going on in a situation before I take any action, unless there's an obvious urgent need. Right now the "who unbanned Kenan" mystery still has the sitewides baffled. I regret that we don't act quickly enough or communicate quickly enough to suit Kate, but frankly, she has a hair-trigger and there's no such thing as moving quickly enough or communicating quickly enough to suit Kate.

Mods don't do, or fail to do, anything in order to spite any ILXor.

Taking a mod action on a board that isn't being tracked and not telling anyone, including the other other sitemods, about what you are doing is bad modding. If there was a reason behind it, if it had been written up the mods Kate contacted could have communicated better with her. She may still be angry, but there would be answer. As it stands right now, we have nothing to say other than "we don't know what happened". That doesn't help anyone.

If 'who unbanned kenan' is a big question, then 'when/how did kate get ILTMI mod powers back' is another one, i think

actually I wonder if there's some weird cache interaction happening here where attempting to do something at a certain time gets ignored because the site is running maintenance tasks

How long is this clusterfuck going to go on for?

1) I banned Kenan (and a couple of other guys who had posted) from the thread because, as stated, several people on the thread (myself, Nijoli and someone else) said that they felt uncomfortable sharing intimate details of their personal lives for fear of mockery, among other things. Kenan, to give him credit, at least tried to contact me about this, though I was unable to respond, as he did not provide an email address where we could discuss it further.

2) Someone removed the ban. I contacted several moderators asking what the policy on this was. I asked, if I was not going to be allowed to moderate, to have my moderation privileges revoked and to be removed from the board. Only one mod replied, saying that he was too busy with personal issues to get involved (fair enough). There was no other response.

3) When there was no response, I banned both of my accounts from TMI. If anyone had been curious or concerned about that, well, NOT ONE PERSON bothered to webmail or email me or ask me what had happened, they just went straight to opening up the old clusterfuck thread yet again.

4) I yet again wrote to several more mods, explaining my actions yet again, and asking for this thread to be locked. I have been removed from moderation, I have been removed from TMI. I do not know what else you want? A public execution?

I do not understand this thread is kept being kept open for the usual round of clusterfuck, character assassination, grandstanding and just all around fucking drama that gets dragged out whenever my name is even *mentioned* on the mod board, whether I am involved or not. I gather you lot seem to enjoy doing this, because I certainly do not.

I am asking yet again for this thread to be locked since none of the moderators have responded to any of my emails. Enough is enough.
