if a poster on the board wishes death on a sick poster and isn't temp banned, what exactly gets you a temp ban these days?

1. for the millionth time, the change from sb to fp was a 100% rhetorical change. the issue was that suggest ban sounds aggro, and flag post sounds less so. it is the exact same system! the success is in the fact that people use it differently because of the connotations, but the under the hood aspect is exactly the same, when someone gets 51, they get banned.

i'll just preface this by saying that i don't mind being called out like this, i'm a reasonable guy and can take it like i dish it

but for the record the only time i can recall ever having to retract my mod criticism was on that "why was morbs banned" thread a couple of months ago. i didn't have all the facts (because posts were deleted) so i acted on bad infos. i apologized to dan yesterday for driving him up a wall for a couple years because i regretted that circumstance made an ilx enemy out of someone i otherwise think is cool. because he WAS an awful mod. but honestly i think there's been one, maybe two visible mods since I started posting here that aren't pretty bad at modding. i don't personally dislike any of the mods we feud with; the problem is ~mod culture~, not the mods themselves. last night i regretted people thinking i was using the incident yesterday just to needle the mods, because i saw how a reasonable person could have made that conclusion. but i didn't retract anything i said. and our only decent mod ended up making the right decision, so all is good

ok i should probably clarify that erudite point.

i respond to stuff because my #1 reason for taking on modding is that i felt that as an ilx user, clear and transparent descriptions of what was happening and why it was happening wrt mod decisions were a key aspect of this community. tbf as a dude that was a total pain in the ass about why ilx should not require registration (since have realized i was wrong abt that) i was kinda shocked to get asked to mod. so my basic tenets as mod have been 1)explain what is/isn't happening and why and 2)not become a cipher as a poster, because if i have to self-edit and be nicey nice when shit is stupid, i stop being an ilx participant. I make great pains to be clear abt when i am speaking as MOD and when I am speaking as me, and when I am speaking as me as mod, so catching shit about not being above the fray and keeping some sorta mod decorum when peeps are howling for my head is just not a thing i am going to do. i dont really get the point of some dude coming in here after j0rdan and k3v and i had all worked out our shit and the situation had worked itself out already, but hey, whatever makes your saturday night i guess.

ehh i never remember you getting much of a hard time about being a mod, probably because of said unexpressed opinions? basically i'm needling jjj on the same tip i used to needle tombot and djp: "you seem to either really hate being a mod, or enjoy it for weird reasons, either way maybe you don't need to keep doing this?". sorry if it was tacky to pile on itt but it's not like there's ever a 'good time' to say these things where mods are like oh good it's complaint box day, let us have it!

It's true, I avoided a lot of the ill will that JJJ has caught, that DJP caught in the HI DERE era, and especially that Tombot caught. But every time somebody pushed what I considered an undeserved needle into a mod, I felt it a little bit too, and had a brief "oh lord, when will it be my turn" moment. I won't speak for any of the other mods, but it sure wouldn't surprise me to find that they felt it too. That's probably why I've crapped out as a mod after a relatively brief stretch: I'm too goddamn sensitive.

I will say that I never felt the needle when I thought the criticism was deserved, and there have been times when that was definitely the case. But it seems, looking back, that so much moderator criticism has boiled down to "I don't like your style, and somehow that's your problem, not mine." Posting style aside, and tendency to post "FUCK YOUUUUU no wait, that was injudicious and badly phrased, here's a more reasoned answer" aside, I think JJJ is one of the best mods ILX has ever had, and I always trusted his instincts over mine about what specifically needed to be done in any particular situation.

Let me just clean that up a bit and repeat it: for all you folks who think I was a good mod but JJJ is terrible, I followed his lead, and I don't think it ever led me wrong. Everything else is just cosmetics.

I didn't think it was that obvious, and was a beyond stupid "joke." board lawyering is unlikely to accomplish anything here besides waste people's time. I don't think the mod in question needs to justify the decision further at all.

i think things like this should be taken in the context of the poster's history here, as happened with calzino. also, i hate to bring this up, but one of the things people on the left are _really_ concerned about is apparent bias. people might get the idea that a centrist saying the same thing that boring did would be met with a more lenient response. since this isn't a hypothesis anybody particularly want to see tested, it's a hard belief to argue against, and we're all particularly sensitive to it in light of facebook equating antifa with qanon.

I posted in the Admin Log Watch thread but I'll post here too - I've checked out the context, and while I honestly couldn't tell if it was poorly-rendered gallows humour or a seriously aggressive post (it was a bad post either way), I'm in favour of this not being a permaban. Unless they're an old user in a new name, they don't have much history here and most of their posts are perfectly innocuous, so a temp ban seems preferable.

i've luckily never struggled with depression, but i have many friends and family members who have. ilx has documented at least one suicide attempt and plenty of suicidal ideation. there is a way to do gallows humor without crossing a line which should be pretty obvious to most intelligent people.
