Mark C, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Nice.

My boss gave me a KOM jersey which i have never worn and will never wear.

wilter, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

I love the Astana colours, and for some reason when Vino was ridiculous last year it made me want his jersey all the more. Thanks to ebay, I now have one.

Mark C, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I've got a Team Bianchi jersey and knicks from a couple of years ago that is mah fave team outfit.

wilter, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

I want a Holdsworth jersey (my local bike shop is where the renowned marque was born) but they're all really expensive.

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

astanas kit is nice- nice jersey

now that im not racing for anybody, i am trying to find cheap but good riding gear that is without any adverts or affiliations of any kind. ive got like 12 years of orange and purple and blue kit. oh and one set of maroon and gold collegiate stuff from racing for du.

my experience unofficial bike racer rules hold that you may not wear pro jerseys lest ye be mocked. scrub bike racers are ridiculous like this, but i conformed. dint want to get 'ooooh, fanboy!' or 'are you mark cavendish in that high road gear? because man have you become FAT.'

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

"experience is that..."

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah a friend of mine who is a very serious sprinter earned the nickname Coasty coz he always gets around in this nasty old team coast jersey.

wilter, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

hunt3r, craft is the best at making the kind of gear you are looking for. it's relatively cheap. you are a lawyer.

cutty, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

also, hunt3r OTM about wearing pro team kit. i never would although i REALLY like the slipsteam/chipotle argyle crazyness. i would wear the socks in my home i think.

cutty, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

As i've mentioned before somewhere, this mob's factory is right near me, they make some good gear and the 2nds are hell cheap.

wilter, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

..not that that really concerns you ppl in the northern hemisphere very much.

wilter, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

well i love knog products so whatever

cutty, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

i just got this. First tech-y jacket I've purchased in like ten years.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 8 May 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

why plain solid colors appeal to me. i figure thats like half of the stuff ive had, the rest worn out crashed out lost.

i think craft is the best at solid colors, none too offensive

Hunt3r, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Is it also really bad to wear Campagnolo clothing (because it looks cool) when your bike is all Shimano?

Bocken Social Scene, Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

It depends how much the opinions of lycra fascists matter to you! I think you'll get away with it.

Mark C, Saturday, 10 May 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

In anticipation of my flash new bike actually arriving, can someone tell me what exactly is the grease with which I need to grease my eggbeater threads? I am baffled by all the various kinds of lubricant bikes require - a quick lesson would be great.

Thanks!

Mark C, Thursday, 22 May 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

I use Pedro's syngrease for all my greasing needs and their synlube for the chain. Oranjpeelz degreaser is good too.

Ed, Thursday, 22 May 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

anybody here ever use a carradice bike bureau? inspired by the ile msgr bag thread, im looking to get a friendlier commuter pannier. i use a single ortlieb classic, and its great- on the bike. i want something that looks non-bikey and is shoulderable, with minimal lashing fuss.

i looked at arkel briefcase and commuter bag, but the former is too big and expensive, and the latter looks to bikey and has stow issues on the shoulder strap, but im listenin'.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

What is yr new bike Mark C?

wilter, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

Walter, it's an unnecessarily highly specced bike I can only justify because a tax break means I get it for 40% off - it's the Focus Cayo Pro.

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

looks great. when will it be in then? bettya cant wait

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 May 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

It was supposed to come end April, latest is that it'll come end May. I'm actually really nervous about riding it because it's not going to feel nearly as soft as my Trek. But yeah, I can't wait. I might just stroke it for a bit.

There's altogether too much carbon on that thing. I'll probably shatter it when I try and put the pedals on.

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

might just stroke it for a bit

ahem, easy now

so anyway, i was looking at buying one of the carradice bags direct. i figured it would cost $50 or so to ship it by slow boat, but its looking more like $100. that sure seems like an awful lot.

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

ROWR. if this had a shoulder strap, i think id get it.

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

this basil preston laptop bag is approaching my ideal in appearance and apparent function. i cant find a single review anywhere. nor a picture of attachment mechs. any info appreciated.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 24 May 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

I am wondering if I should start looking at alternative bikes - the Focus still isn't in stock, and it's almost two months since I ordered it. If I were to go for something else, do you think Wiggle would feel morally obliged to give me some kind of discount/upgrade if I had to choose a different machine?

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

i dont know about their moral obligation, but obv its in their best business interest to satisfy their customer in the face of unreasonable delay. did they advise you that there would be such a delay?

what are your damages?

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

btw i bought that basil bag w/ no performance review. hope its not a pos.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

no free lawyering

cutty, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

yeah and its england. ive got a copy of chitty on k's right here on my desk tho, so solicitors and barristers watch out.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

ok i had ordered a bag from carradice but it was on hold until i approved the shipping cost. i then figured i would cancel as it looked like shipping would be exorbitant. carradice just advised shipping from uk is affordable after all, and i really wanted their bag in the first place. gah!

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

i think i need some new handlebars (i have flat ones now, but my wrists start hurting on longer rides). i'm not sure if i should get flat ones with bar ends or just get drops?

Jordan, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

my old commuter had flats/barends and they were very good for alternate hand position. my current bike has drops, and i love having the hoods, but i almost never use the drops because the bar has a very deep bend.

also, refitting with drops gets pricey real fast if you want brifters

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

Bullhorns!

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

would like that bike

ledge, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

altho i don't really dig the straight forks

ledge, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

When I ordered the bike they said end of April. At the end of April this changed to the end of May. I got an email today saying they were sorry, they still didn't have it in and they'd chase up their supplier. All a bit disappointing although I haven't been misinformed (as far as I know).

Cutty, I don't think lawyers are the first people I'd go to with anything to do with morals :)

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

ledge, have you looked the Fixie Inc site recently. Sigh.

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

just CALL THEM AND COMPLAIN BRO AND BE NICE. summer's a wastin'

when i looked at yr bike on bike radar last week the second thing i saw was other ppl complaining about delays. obv its an issue, no idea when it got to be one.

true story-i net ordered a bunch of bike parts (airbomb), and they put my order on hold for one week, then two. i called them yesterday, said "what up?!," and very nice dude said, "how bout i replace with next model up for no charge, ship tomorrow?" and i said "cool."

so yes, even some net order houses will help you. (dont think it was a moral issue tho.)

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmm that sounds good! I shall take your advice I think. Thanks again Hunter (you ought to start charging for advice, like cutty, it's solid gold stuff).

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

Bought today: teflon grease, teflon lube, track pump w/ gauge. 80psi feels really fuckin' inflated, or at least compared to the 60psi to which I was previously, and approximately, inflating my tyres. My tyres can take at least 115 psi, according to their info, but I am way too scared of explosions to test this out (I am also terrified of blowing up balloons in case they pop in my mouth).

Mark C, Saturday, 31 May 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

100 psi for you. (im surprised you didnt have problems at 60 if yr on 23s- squishiness, pinchflats etc)

Hunt3r, Saturday, 31 May 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

I honestly thought I was inflating fairly aggressively. Maybe it was higher than 60 - I should experiment from 1 bar and see if I can gauge a rough estimate as to my previous levels. I certainly had a couple of punctures about a year ago which I was pretty sure was because of over-inflation (I managed to blow a substantial hole in a Specialized Armadillo), but in retrospect I guess it couldn't have been.

Mark C, Saturday, 31 May 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

couple of punctures about a year ago which I was pretty sure was because of over-inflation (I managed to blow a substantial hole in a Specialized Armadillo)

dunno. if the bead was seated right, i think itd take an awful lot of pressure to accomplish this.

i knew guys whod go 20 psi over the tire psi rating for tt's. i thot it was dumb, but they didnt appear to have problems.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 31 May 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

Ah well, I guess I was wrong. I had a very brief ride today - did a 2/3 mile hill three times, interval training of a sort - but there was enough of a tailwind to be uncertain of any benefit. I was expecting the ride to feel much harsher but it wasn't as bad as I'd imagined.

Would it be a criminal offence to have auxiliary brakes on a 16lb carbon bike?

Mark C, Saturday, 31 May 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, Hunter - do you read/post on any cycling forums? Any you'd recommend for a non-racer noob like myself?

Mark C, Saturday, 31 May 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

bikeforums.net has some good info i think.

i dont do any others anymore as they usually are not worth the aggravation or i think the ppl are unreliable. rec.bicycles.tech is sometimes worth a perusal on tech questions.

A wonderfully arch diss from the ledge there.

lol, no it's true, i sport the same combo myself!

ledge, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

i knew i was going to get clowned somehow for my bike setup!

Jordan, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

responding to a post way way way back (sorry)... mark, do your eggbeaters have titanium spindles? if they do, it's better to grease them with ti prep instead of standard grease.

xpost to jordan (nice name, btw)- bar ends on risers have nothing on mary bars... the most hideous handlebar creation of them all.

ytth, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

bar ends on risers are barftown, get some nice wide bullhorns broski

gbx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 02:30 (seventeen years ago)

Hi Jordan,

No, the eggbeaters have stainless steel spindles, so teflon grease will be okay?

Not that I'm getting the fucking bike, and am engaging in a deeply unsatisfactory exchnage with Wiggle who want me to take the next model down as an alternative. Fuck that (though I guess if they can, say, give me much nicer wheels on it, I might say yes).

Mark C, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to jordan (nice name, btw)

???

Jordan, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

bullhorns look nice, but it was so much cheaper and faster to get the bar ends. maybe later, although i am still kinda tuomas about why the bar ends/risers combo is bad.

Jordan, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

How much of a wheel upgrade are they offering?

Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

ytth, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

Ed, Fulcrum racing 3 vs Fulcrum racing 5 (price difference: £211 at Wiggle). Basically, the way we've worked it is I'm getting both, so I might have the 5s to sell.

Mark C, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Bar ends/risers isn't bad, it's just unfashionable. Ignore the hataz.

Mark C, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

ok wow that carradice bag got to me in colorado from lancs in 6 days total. meanwhile i've been battling to get parts from two different usa suppliers for almost 4 weeks. o my country.

so this bag seems pretty great for what i need. comfortable on the shoulder, easy to affix to the bike, looks normal enough that i dont have to transfer gear to another bag when i dont commute by bike.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 7 June 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

Carradice stuff is damn good. I had an utterly indestructible pair of panniers made by them. What did you get?

Ed, Monday, 9 June 2008 08:35 (seventeen years ago)

bike bureau as pictured upthread. actually, silver/gray fastex buckles have been replaced by simple black on mine.

i looked at the arkel stuff which is highly rated, but their attachment system looks to be a pia for commuting (though bombproof). and more expensive, even after i paid 19 pounds for shipping.

Guys I just won a competition! Well, actually I was runner up in a competition but I won a Rapha Classic Sportwool Jersey! Are they any good? They're quite expensive it seems, so I assume so.

Mark C, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 11:48 (sixteen years ago)

MARK, THEY ARE AWESOME!! KUDOS!

ddb, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yes truly awesome and worth nearly 200 quid or something ridiculous.

Ed, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

£110 but still, I'm pleased :) Cheers ddb!

Mark C, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

its not the hampsten one is it

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 14:58 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know - apparently I will be contacted by a Rapha rep to find out my size (fuck knows what size I am - large, I guess, but I always get it wrong). Actually, just found the competition - no, the winner wins the Hampsten stuff, I just get a jersey apparently, with complimentary arm-warmers!

Mark C, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

i own a classic sportwool jersey. i don't wear it as much anymore because i have team kit but i wish i could wear it everyday.

cutty, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

Hey all I just got a new pair of shiny hand built wheels that are awesome. Thing is, the old cassette had to be replaced along with the sprocket since I have a 20 year old bike with 6-speeds.

Since this was done, the drivetrain is noisy, jumpy, and shifts strange. Any ideas whether this is a case of a lack of lube (sounds like a personal problem), something that will work itself out over time as the new cog teeth wear down a bit, a chain issue, or what? Maybe a question of derailleur adjustment? There is exactly one gear where it rides smoothly now.

dan m, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

Did you replace the chain as well? How many cogs on the new cassette? How many rings up front, or is it just one? If you're running 1x6, you're going to get a baddish chainline at either end of the cassette. A newer chain might be the fix?

Got any pics?

gbx, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I rode a Selle Anatomica the other day and O_O

gbx, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

Quite how anatomica did it get to make you O_O??

So have you got a new 6-speed cassette, or is it 7+? Cos the chain that fits 6 speed will be large and sloppy on the narrower sprockets of a more extensive cassette and it certainly sounds like that could be the problem.

Mark C, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

i mean it is practically a blowjob in saddle form

gbx, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't replace the chain, was thinking of that. It's a 2x6.

dan m, Thursday, 10 July 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

I will look into taking some pics tonight perhaps.

dan m, Thursday, 10 July 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

This weekend I have to compile a list of the things I'll need for my Paris ride. One of those bags that goes behind the saddle, y/n?

Mark C, Friday, 11 July 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, take some of the weight off your back.

ledge, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

triangular ones under the top tube quite nifty too.

ledge, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

I've been looking for some vintage steel, and on Friday I found some: a 1976 Raleigh Gran Sport (Carlton-built). I'll convert it to fixed, getting it some new wheels and odds and ends, but the randonneur bars and front brake (Weinmann centerpull) get to stay. It's got a velvety ride, tons of soul, and I'm so stoked.

collardio gelatinous, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

anyone here ever used a seatpost clamp on rear rack? im looking to turn my decrepit mtb into my bailout icy condition commuter. i got some cheap studded tires coming.

i want to keep using my bike bureau on a rack, but im unsure if a seatpost mount can really bear a single sided 15-18 lbs max load.

http://www.performancebike.com/product_images/500/20-1982-BLK-ANGLE.jpg

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

collardio, pics?

I've used a rack with seatpost clamp. It worked fine in terms of carrying loads, but it wrecked havoc on the bike's handling. Seatpost racks sit higher than conventional racks and when leaning into a turn, I could really feel the difference. Did not like it at all and gave up on it after a few weeks.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

thx, thats an interesting point. i was more concerned with it rotating on the post under load.

the conditions i will be using it under-- i dont think ill be leaning into turns too much. hmm.

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

My rack was pretty robust, so I didn't have a problem with it twisting. I wouldn't get one of the quick-release type clamps for obvious reasons.

As for handling, if you're building up a beater/utility type rig, then performance is kind of not an issue. The higher center of gravity might get kind of dicey on slippery surfaces though.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

yah, yr post caused me to scrutinize an mtb locked outside my building with a post rack. it was about my bike's size. the rack did not bend down towards the rear tire as the one above, it was straight. it was ginormously high from the rear wheel, so i can imagine that would be poor.

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

Super Cub, I'll try to get some pics of it this weekend, before I start doing any mods (I'm resigned to it taking me a while, b/c I'm super-busy these days). From the looks of the brazing and the paintjob, it appears that the Carlton shop had its hands full trying to keep up with Raleigh's production schedule.

Anyone wanna recommend me a bike pump? Here is the deal: This wouldn't be an emergency-specific thing b/c I am a big dude riding a bike w/ super-skinny rims & am going on increasingly lengthy outings over terrain rife w/ cracks, potholes etc. So, basically, my tubes need re-ups quite often, only to 80-90psi, but I'd like to manage that without a lot of stress & strain. I'd like to get a Zefal HPX, but would prefer something not frame-mounted, so I can fit it in a triangle frame-pack with other tools, etc. Can I get a size #1 HPX & fit it into a 16" frame pack, or would I be better off with one of the Topeak Morph series? The Topeak pumps are generally well-reviewed, but I'm suspicious of all the movable plastic pieces & how sturdy they would be over time.

"alt-black" (Pillbox), Thursday, 11 June 2009 01:52 (sixteen years ago)

Also, do I really need to spend $50+ on a carbon-fiber water-bottle cage? Being that my bike was manufactured in 1976, I'm guessing probably not. So, anyone wanna recommend me a decent cage, appropriate for an older bike w/out being too clunky/clattery?

"alt-black" (Pillbox), Thursday, 11 June 2009 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

Topeak have a great little pump called the pocket rocket which I have for exactly that purpose. It'll take you up to 120psi no worries.

Thanks, tho I have floor pump. What I am concerned about is maintaining proper PSI levels over the course of 20-30 mile rides & replacing the occasional tube on the road. Again, the combination of being a burly fellow & encountering a fair amount of less-than-ideal road features ensures that I would do well to prioritize this, at least until the point where I am able to comfortably afford more modern & high-performance gear.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ed. I will look into the Pocket Rocket.

Mine is actually an original Belgian racing model & not its (slightly downgraded) American equivalent. It is pretty great & has certainly given me a taste for the sport, but now that my curiosity has gotten me researching gear, etc, I'm feeling pretty isolated-in-1976 technology-wise - esp. after checking out a lot of the pics on this board.

"Pake" means more like cheap. I think it originally meant Chinese (person), and the meaning kind of evolved from there.

note: this is just my understanding; I do not condone or sanction or pretend to really understand any of this.

Super Cub, Friday, 12 June 2009 09:12 (sixteen years ago)

To be clear, "pake" would be used like this:

He's so pake, he takes his girlfriend to McDonald's on her birthday.

Ok, back to bikes.

Super Cub, Friday, 12 June 2009 09:18 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure if locks are gear, but what kind do I need? I bought a faux vintage cruiser today, and the lady at the store recommended this 50 pound $90 kryptonite chain that I would wear around my waist when riding. It would seem to sort of destroy the BCBG look I am going for. But it's insured for the price of the bike if stolen. I preferred the look of the U lock--but she thought that the $40 version wouldn't be worth anything over an hour. I decided maybe I would just hardly lock my bike up at all if that was the case. Suggestions?

She also said I should detach the seat when I lock it!

Virginia Plain, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

any kryptonite lock is going to have a decent monetary guarantee, although you can only redeem those if you have evidence that the lock was broken (namely, the broken lock, which the thief would have to be kind enough to leave near the crime scene for you to retrieve). a kryptonite evolution lock (the black/orange one) is a good choice for not too much money (and the evolution mini fits in a rear pocket a la every hipster with a fixed gear bike). just stay away from really cheap u-locks and the master lock handcuff looking ones.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Monday, 22 June 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

i guess it depends on how you plan on carrying it?

i am a hipster scumbag with a mini-U and i love it for its portability. however, i'm def taking my chances: my cx bike has quick release skewers and i rarely ever bring a cable to secure them (that, btw, is a good, light option: mini-u w/about 4' of kryptonite cable to run thru the wheels).

the heavy duty chains are just that: HEAVY. and wearing them around your waist will def destroy your look. however, if you put a plastic crate on your rear rack you can just drop it in there, no sweat.

yeah, do that

i want to marry a pizza (gbx), Monday, 22 June 2009 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

didn't mean to imply all who use mini-evo locks are hipster scum; i mean, messengers started using them for their portability, and they're pretty damn convenient... but it's hard to deny that they've become a fashion accessory for the buy-new-chrome-gear-to-match-the-season set.

i use a new york u-lock, which is not convenient at all.

Mornington Crescent (Ed), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

recommend me a seat-post rack. my frame, annoyingly, has no rack mount eyelets but i'd like to get groceries and stuff on it just the same. doing a quick search on amazon shows nothing rated past 25 lbs; quick-release ones (which i think i'd prefer) are even lighter.

check out old man mountain who have a number of expensive but very durable rack solutions for no eyelet situations.

How long will this prevent a thief? And do I have to take my seat with me, as the bike lady suggested?

itdn put butt in the display name (gbx), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

for proper training or where i anticipate being out the back on my own, the most minimalist is best, i think i have an innovations thing. for commute i have a quickshot thing that accepts any style of cartridge (threaded, unthreaded, 12g or 16g). even a 12g will get me rolling on 28s at like 75 i think.

one thing to know is that imu co2 goes through butyl tubes over time, its soluble or something. youll lose psi over days. so refill with a pump when you get home. maybe this is a myth, but it seems to match my experiences.

ok so i realize that clicking on a freewheel cassette when coasting is normal, but lately when i'm in one particular gear and pedaling there is this excellent "gaga-daga" clicking. so 1. why is this happening? and 2. should i continue to think it's cool or go to the bike stand and fix this mofo?

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

nobody got any ideas abt this ^^ ??

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Saturday, 19 December 2009 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

While pedaling? Trim your derailleurs, and stop riding in gears where the chain has to cross over at an extreme angle.

naus, Saturday, 19 December 2009 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

the angle is not extreme at all. it's the 15 tooth (3rd of 7) sprocket in back and the big one in front.
derailer in back is adjusted fine for the range of motion i need it to do . . .

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Saturday, 19 December 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

i think naus is right, your derailler is not indexed properly. if you cant adjust it so it goes away, check the alignment of your derailler hanger. you can sometimes do it by eye, but it can be tricky.

nostragaaaawddamnus (Hunt3r), Saturday, 19 December 2009 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

i don't understand. i have no click stops in my shifters which would correspond to the index . . .
i am referring to this
maybe i am not explaining this adequately. the sound kinda reminds me of how a 3-spd clicks at different rates in different gears, but this clicking only happens on the 15 tooth sprocket. other gears are quiet when pedaling. hanger looks straight

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Saturday, 19 December 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

Try adjusting the tightness of the derailleur cable - if it's gone a bit slack this usually shows up most obviously in the middle of the cassette.

Otherwise, "gaga-daga" isn't all that helpful so sorry if we can't pinpoint it! Make a recording?

Mark C, Saturday, 19 December 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

Looking for a recommendation on saddle bags: does it matter which or are they all the same? Does anybody have a preference? Basically looking for something that can hold a spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, 6" adj. wrench, pliers, allen keys, house keys, and phone. It would be nice if it could hold a small pump too, but that's not essential as they can clip to the frame.

I'm looking to do more frequent, longer solo rides, and (esp. with it getting dark before 5 these days), would like to be able to have some confidence that I won't be stranded dozens of miles from home due to something that could have been helped with a basic roadside fix.

It's not super portable, but it's not permanently mounted or anything. It lives in my garage so I have room for it, but I'm going to take it into my basement to build up my brand new frame(!) next week and moving around isn't going to be a big deal at all.

I am move to a new level & I'm going to need some apparel, starting w/ shoes. I'm not sure what brand the pedals are, but can you guys tell by looking at them what *type* of shoes would be best & then whatever brand recommendations & such..

lube question: this thing has some dynamite components which, from the close-ups the dude sent me, appear to have been pristinely maintained. Would you guys recommend using White Lightening type lube? I've heard complaints that the cleanliness of that stuff is not worth what some would argue is a sacrifice of optimal performance. Whatever the case, I do not want to be the guy who grungifies this beautiful thing, even as a I ride the fuck out of it.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Monday, 22 February 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

those look like, er, LOOK pedals. you'll need a shoe with the three screw holes on the bottom - most do - and some new cleats. (you can get cleats that give you a little side-to-side movement, or ones that lock you in fixed.)

haitch wears the shimano R086, because a) it doesn't cost a ton, b) it is white, which makes it more PRO.

eau de humanity (haitch), Monday, 22 February 2010 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

well, never mind about the pedals b/c ya, they are indeed part of a Look setup & the dude is going to keep them, so I'll need to get a whole set-up, which is prob for the best anyway tbh.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Monday, 22 February 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Hunt3r, haven't you said before that you hose down your cross bike and re-treat it with White Lightning?? I dunno, I tried it once for packing a (really old) hub and it wasn't anywhere near thick enough, had to pull apart and re-do. Maybe there are certain things it's good for?

Any thoughts on Eggbeater vs. Speedplay pedals? I've narrowed my options down to these, as I am looking for a system in which the shoe is locked onto the pedal, but which also offers more fluid, open foot movement than old school toe-clip pedals.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

i didn't like speedplay 'light action' pedals when i had them on my bike - never felt quite locked-in enough. i swapped them off for ultegra SPD-SLs pretty quickly. i think they are not recommended for racing though, so the other models in the speedplay range might lock you down better. they were really easy to get in and out of, though!

eau de humanity (haitch), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't race with Eggbeaters, and after 60 miles or so I get hot spot issues, but for shorter rides and commuting they're brilliant.

i can't believe examples of this product still exist even virtually, but check out how similar the profile of those cf spokes look to hunt3r's 1994 team sponsor fiber flight's cf spokes. im sure they are worlds apart. <3 sponsors, but no way was i lacing those to anything.

those 'CF spokes bonded into the rim' wheels (lightweights, cosmic carbone ultimates) seem to be pretty tuff, but if you fuck one up it's a trip back to germany/france to fix i think... big buck$$$$$ for a busted spoke.

ed i tried speedplay ('light action') and SPD-SLs (ultegra) and the speedplays were easy to get in/out but didn't feel locked-in enough for my liking. am willing to put that down to them being the light action version - probably should've got zeros instead. having no probs with the ultegras tho, would recommend unreservedly.

i have big ass feet (12/47) and the idea of a platform pedal seemed more comforting. supposedly shimano has less problems with hotspots due to anatomical design, not sure if that's fact or sales pitch.

I gotta say that shifting w/my new ultegra gruppo is v nice (not a shimano stan btw)

wilter, Friday, 21 May 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)

kinda think i got lucky with nu-ultegra as my first 'real' road group experience tbh. think it might've dropped the chain... once? otherwise shifting has been rock-solid, comfortable brifters, brakes are good. i like the twin-levers shifting too - have a feeling i'd get over-excited on a sram setup and go down when i wanted to go up or whatever.

does anyone experience with vermarc stuff? a friend is doing a shitload of gear for his informal club (the group that rides from his restaurant), and all my old shorts are wearing/worn out. it would be weird to wear kit from a non existent "team" but the price is right-- if the gear is good. looks nice.

establishment man cloggin up ur spills (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

One of my top 5 favorite "feeling" (as opposed to "looking") bib shorts I own which are from Vermarc Sport DK. I got them in the Sports Basement bargain bin for ~$20 and they declare very loudly across the butt and thighs in Electric Blue and Gold: "PROCYCLING" in three different futuristic Fred-tastic fonts. No team name nor illusion of sponsors like their QuickStep kit... I like to think that the usage of "PRO" is in the advocacy sense but who am I kidding. Bear in mind I would never wear these on a day that I would have any chance encounter of anyone I know, and mostly these see the most saddle time under the wintertights.

But yes... PROCYCLING!

The chamois looks "medical grade" if that makes any sense. Very nice.

you can get 110 bcd rings up to 52, so why don't you see more bikes with 52, 38 on a 110 bcd. OK so the chainrings will be marginally heavier or less stiff, but more choices on 110?

you do in the pros when they go to the mountains. some guys rock a 52/36 which must wreak havoc on the chain/rear d but i think they install chain guards (?).

that is not the hub on that m28, the one i got is probably kinda old now
there is some light corrosion in and around the qr clamp thing
and i can't discern any markings on the rim, so that is a good guess that i would be the hub and a generic rim.

Spent some time today fettling up the old neglected 1998 marin muirwoods, put lovely new jagwire cables in, looked bang on, except the front shifter will only find 2 positions (of three) and the rear will find 5 of 7. None of them are particularly sound either, feels well wrong, have a horrible feeling the springs etc in the trigger shifters are gone, which will only incur more cost, may as well have just got a new bloody bike. Am well pissed off with it.

friend at work said he thought his bottom bracket bearings were worn out on his 6" travel MTB due to a creaking/grinding noise when he turned the cranks - he has external bearings, so i thought this was unlikely, especially given that he never rides in rain/mud. took a look at his bike and told him that on a bike like that, especially when you have a chainguide, grinding is pretty hard to diagnose. took a closer look and realized the chain was bone dry - turns out he had never lubed it one time since buying the bike a year ago. he felt dumb.

rag photographique (ytth), Saturday, 6 November 2010 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

replaced cog at 5:00 a.m.-- the old 18 really didn't seem bad, considering it has about 12k on it. anyway, i thought i had a spare 8spd chain lying around, only to find i had only a 9 spd. not really compatible, but rode it anyway-- chain is binding a bit on cog.

light 1" all carbon forks are really hard to find now, and expensive, if you can find one at all (you can still get _beautiful_ woundups, but they are sorta heavy). anyway, i should have bought an easton they were blowing them out in november at half the going rate. now they are all gone afaict.

Need to bring this thread down to earth for a sec: I need a new saddle for my 3-spd townie. Now that I live 5-7 miles from anywhere, I can't ignore how painful the old two-tone seat is anymore.

Who makes a decent sprung saddle that's not inappropriate for an old bike WITHOUT being a "cost of my firstborn" Brooks? Looked at Electra's options, so far they're winning. Anyone else I should check out?

other than aesthetics, is there any thing to stop me cannibalising my old read (stx) mech from my marin muirwoods and putting it on the new beater with friction shifters? (for which I'v found some dirt cheap wheels and a 5 speed cassette - which I worry is all the frame will take...)

problem chimp (Porkpie), Sunday, 5 June 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

anyone? Bueller?

but also - meant to say yesterday - I introduced the beater to Autosol and autoglym polishes yesterday - this stuff is unbelievably awesome, what were dull grey brake levers destined for the bin/ebay, are now gleaming, shiny levers of wonder that I can see my face in - seriously magical stuff - so much so I've decided to keep them.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

If it's a pub bike/beater, I don't see what you care about aesthetics. Friction shifters work, period. Other than having to trim sometimes to make it smoother, your shifts won't be that much slower.

As far as five speeds go, measure the rear dropout. If it's 120mm, stay with a 5-speed. If it's 126, go ahead with a 6. Hell, if it's 120, you might even be able to find an old Suntour "Ultra-6" freewheel that has 6 cogs in the width of a standard 5. You'll need a narrower chain for that, but all modern chains are narrow enough. A SRAM PC-850/870/890 will likely do the job just fine. It's what I had on my c. 1974 Peugeot UO-8 before giving it away.

(I've heard/read of people bending out their rear stays and dropouts to 130mm to take modern cassettes. I'd be wary, esp. if you don't know the specific tubing/metallurgy of your frame. CrMo can be bent, but MnMo like Reynolds 531 can't.)

naus, Monday, 6 June 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

oh, it's only a beater, but it's my beater, and I like a nice-looking (serviceable) bike. (in fact have changed my mind on the brown saddle bars, am going with....orange, I reckon it'll look nice with the silver frame, and orange tape = way cheaper than brown leather)

Thanks for the call on drop-out width, it looks hella narrow by eye, will measure it up when I get home. There's no way I'm bending the tubes, with my clumsiness, that way el disastero lies.

http://www.cyclingtipsblog.com/2009/07/bike-cases-softshell-or-hardshell/

lukas, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

i like my cheap perf hardshell for airline travel, but i think cardboard is just as good.

domestic usa air charges are obviously typically off the charts now. if you can pack and ship in advance by ups/fedex, it's def cheaper. cardboard works just as well or better here if you do it right, and is free. one problem i have with shipping the hardshell is that its dimensions are juuuuuust over a shipping pricing breakpoint, so the smaller cardboard box works better in that respect too.

obv, if you dont have a backup bike, shipping makes you bikeless for a while.

Many bike cases or bags have their logo written all over the outside (i.e. “BIKE PRO“). This immediately attracts attention to the check-in agent and they’ll most likely charge you extra for a bike (unlike golfers). The Pika Packworks says nothing about bikes on the outside. It doesn’t look like a problem, so check-in agents don’t treat it like a problem. This was one of the factors that the design of the bag was based around – to dodge the excess bike charges. Apparently saying that “camping gear” or “bike parts” is inside the bag does the trick if they ask.

If this works, the case is a bargain at > $300.

lukas, Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

I fitted new pedals to my roadie yesterday, a pair of Crank Bros Candy SL in delightful green (they were 80% off or something). Haven't ridden with them yet but the hot spot on my right foot was getting worse and worse so I hope they're a good investment.

That said, I also moved the cleat about 1.5mm when I replaced my old ones, which might help - and, annoyingly, found a small crack in the sole of my shoes, so the hunt for bargain replacements is underway (though tbh I just want Spesh BG MTB shoes again as I've never owned something that fits so well - but they're £100 these days and never discounted, grr).

Finally, I cleaned my drivetrain for the first time, quite possibly, since I replaced my old one, about 2,000 miles ago. Oops.

i figure that garmin's choice was in part based on exustar's willingness to manufacture to price point and look is a license they have. from my interactions and reading on speedplay, they don't seem like the kind of company that would do anything like that at all.

IMHO this kind of stuff (contact points*) is such a high matter of personal preference, the #lazyweb can't tell you what your own ass on the saddle will.

*saddles, shoes, pedals, etc.

There is a reason why you'll see pros in the peloton wearing/using non-team issued gear (or in some cases, re-branded or brand-camouflaged) and its usually always contact point stuff.

What is your saddle history and what was your experience with each?

not making any choices based on what anyone says here just a curious bro killing time on the internet

i had san marco saddles on the bianchi and cannondale, nice and firm but too narrow. the lemond i have now had a stock bontrager saddle, total throwaway p.o.s. just poorly shaped and soft and cheaply made.

lol waggoner (am0n), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

p much decided on flite for the lemond and i need a saddle for my old raleigh. i like the shape of the turbo better than the concor but not into the turbo's suede/nubuck material. i'd rather have a synthetic cover

lol waggoner (am0n), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

i've had a brooks, and two selle anatomicas. had a honeymoon period with the anatomicas (which i posted about here, i think), and thought they were the best ever saddles. buuuuuut a couple longer rides disabused me of that notion, and the rails kept bending (hence going through two of them). the wingy things on the back of the alias, coupled with the taint cutaway, do what the anatomica does, and better. i've never had any ~issues~, even on longer (40+mi) rides

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 7 November 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

good bib tights, gimp shoes, man up

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

Have a hot bath in the morning before heading out. The bit I hate most about riding in the cold is the first ten minutes - a hot bath raises your core temperature sufficiently to not really notice the cold until you've had a chance to warm up.

Mark C, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

In terms of gear:

a decent wicking baselayer
a long sleeve lined (or wool) jersey

Yo guys I am SO EXCITED abt my new rack/milk crate setup!!!

So everyone at every bike shop has told me that zip ties are p much the de facto attachment method for milk crate onto a rear rack, which is perfect if you never need to take your basket off ever. But as someone who needs to take his basket off sometimes, this simply wouldn't work. I tried a bungee but it was a pain to attach securely, and I watched it tip over w/ a basket full of groceries when my bike was leaning against a pole. Not cool. So anyway after a bit of research I have found the perfect solution: nylon straps for like hiking and shit! At $10 for two 1m straps they are a bit pricey, but instead of a plastic buckle they have a loop at one end and a v secure steel buckle at the other, and they tighten and loosen really easily, they are pretty flat/not bulky, and also they STAY TIGHT. I just carried a shit ton of shit home from TJ's and they worked perfectly. Y'all should peep this:

ten months pass...

A "shit ton of shit". That's for the striking visual imagery thread.

Anyway.

After nine months of not really riding after we moved, I have reinvigorated my enthusiasm in two ways: 1; some work done on the bike to make it smooth and good again (new bottom bracket and headset), and 2; new fancy gear. I got a Kask helmet which is superlight and white w/ red, and I got new shoes (Shimano touring ones, very racy in styling), and, the biggie, some prescription Oakley Fuel Cell sunglasses. Been hankering after these for aeons but I knew they'd be expensive. They were, but the optician did interest-free credit, so who cares. Winner.

Also COOOOLD!! If you bundle up you are most assuredly stinky sweaty after 5 miles!

Stevie D(eux), Friday, 11 October 2013 11:15 (eleven years ago)

one of the BEST things about winter commuting is the very low sweat risk, imo. make sure your ears arms hands and feet are warm. overdress those if you have to do. the rest of you will usually be fine with street clothes and a breathable soft shell on the top. you needn't be stinky or sweaty or stinky sweaty.* if you are breathing harder than you would walking, youre going too hard. you won't be "warm" but you will be ok. because i commute in the morning in street clothes, not sweating is pretty much an obsession for me.

*if your ride includes like, 200 ft+ of continuous vert at 4%+, you may get sweaty if you exert yourself.

like the look of that vulpine softshell a lot, but i doubt i'd buy a cycling specific softshell. i use a non-cycling marmot gravity for commuting, it's really great if you want a dual duty jacket, but cut all wrong for recreational riding.

oh shit you psyched yourself into liking mbv (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 18:03 (eleven years ago)

Vulpine stuff I've seen in the stores is pretty great. It's cut so it looks good off the bike whilst being still functional on it. I've had the Rapha soft shell for the last 4 years or so and while it's a great jacket it's pretty slim cut and no so great if you want to get a shirt and a jumper under it for when you arrive at work. Depends what shape you are really.

I bought my sister a castellated soft shell last Christmas and that was very nice but I think I'm going off castelli, my latest shorts went baggy in the legs way too quickly and the logos don't stretch well with the fabric. I've lost some weight since I've been here but that shouldn't cause the leg cuffs to roll up.

The Vulpine softshell looks lush, but I'd be wanting to do 40-60 mile training rides in it from time to time, and I'm not entirely sure it'd be best suited to that. Whereas the Rapha seems more like it would...

just picked up a capo lombardia jersey for winter. the same material as the gabba/fawesome at a lower price. aero fit & nice long sleeves so no gappy arm-warmers

the front isn't fleece-lined sadly but tht's not fatal

cozen, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago)

same material as the gabba/fawesome at a lower price

doh! i actually prefer arm warmers they are warmer (if not gappy) tho. i've never found a ls jersey that's just right- warm enough in the arms, not overheating my body. maybe capo is the one.

everything on layaway (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 15:37 (eleven years ago)

gabba jersey is rapha expensive but proof is in the peloton I guess

the lombardia is still s/s but they stop just above the elbow so that should eliminate the gappy arm warmer effect hopef

cozen, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago)

who makes good warm arm warmers? i always pick up generic spandex stuff that's not warm enough

eris bueller (lukas), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago)

i typically dislike pi stuff, it often has insufficient stretch and seems very unsupple, but i have their heavyweight-ish armwarmers and they are adequate. typical brushed fleece backing. looks like they don't make em like mine anymore, mine have cool asymmetrical cuffs that longer to the outside and slightly cut back by the thumb. i can wear them alone down to high thirties low forties if its sunny and dry.

everything on layaway (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:48 (eleven years ago)

can i have yours?

eris bueller (lukas), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 18:15 (eleven years ago)

everything on layaway (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago)

I have capo and Rapha ones and they both work well (who has two sets of arm warmers? someone who asks for arm warmers for christmas, that's who). The raphia are heavier and warmer but the capo are still pretty decent and really both do well as if it gets too cold for the capo ones I'm going long sleeved.

want to upgrade the wheels on my winter bike to shimano R501s but the rear wheel is a cassette-style hub whereas my current wheels are 6-speed freewheel style

is it possible to use the R501s and how do I go about it?

cozen, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 08:09 (eleven years ago)

semi-educated guess: you'll need to get the rear triangle spread to take the wider hub. you'll need a 6-sp cassette to replace yr freewheel, too, which might be more problematic.

LubricatedGoatVEVO (haitch), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 11:02 (eleven years ago)

hmmm sounds technical. so do I pay RRP and get a bike shop to do it or do I pay internet prices and try fudge it myself

Currently erring towards red; green is most visible, obviously, but perhaps a touch too close to hi-vis. The grey is nice, but very close to my current Rapha Stowaway, and I don't want to blend in with tarmac so much.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 14 November 2013 21:25 (eleven years ago)

sure. ed are you using tubies for general riding, or just events? nothing better than the way they feel, and in cx racing, anything else is like an actual joke ime.

ftr it seems like one can find ultegra 6700 wheelsets out there for pretty reasonable rates new, esp in uk. they are not light at 1650g, but reasonable for a training set.

basically i've been dared into a cx race, i have no rubber, and sold off my cx tubular wheelsets long ago. figure i'll try these tubeless for cx, then convert them to road (hopefully i don't trash them).

I got some Maciv R-Sys wheels used before I left the states. I'm riding them pretty much everywhere. Having learnt that Mavic's own tyres are about as puncture proof as wet tissue I've had mainly trouble free riding with nothing more than a can of vittoria inflateyfoam. I've had one puncture that stopped me getting home but that was a 6 inch rusty nail that stuck right through the tread and sidewall, I had to taxi to the nearest train station. I might have been able to macguyver a solution with a clincher but I'd have been walking down Oliver's Hill at the very least if I had.

The sleeves are a little annoying, though, if you're going fast; the fleece cuffs inside are quite baggy, so if you're wearing short sleeves beneath you'll get a cold wind right up your sleeve (this is obviated a bit by being on the drops, tbf). Long sleeves underneath and this is fine. The sleeves are also a little baggier than I'd have liked, but I knew it wasn't anywhere near a racing cut. The pocket for keys in the sleeve also requires some serious dexterity to access the carabiner. Maybe a Rapha Pro Team Jacket for next winter...

Other than that, really pleased with it. Have done well over 50 miles in it now, with bibs and overshorts (45ish) or with jeans (10ish), and it works really well either way; good cut, good baboon-bum-flap, good pocket layout, looks good, and keeps me toasty warm. The point of buying it was to keep me riding through winter, and encourage me to ride more often than just for exercise, so we'll see how that pans out. But it's working so far.

Got some Howies bib tights, which I wore yesterday and Saturday; circular-knitted, 'seamless', quite thick lycra and with no pad, so you can / should wear them over another pair of shorts or bibs - it's like I suddenly own 6 pairs of bib tights, cos you don't need to wash these anywhere near as often as they've not got your sweaty junk right in them. Dead useful, very comfortable, kept the wind right out, and with 3/4s underneath, I reckon they'd be good down to 0c or even below.

Strong recommendation for garneau super shield lobster gloves. I've had 2 dif versions of pi, a planet bike, and swix before this. Garneaus are very unlikely looking- they are veerry low volume on the insulation, and very supple. Because they fit so close i was sure they were sized far too small (I have an 8.5 hand and purchased large). If I tug on them my fingers graze the end, which in most winter gloves is too small, you normally want 5 or 7mm ime. Anyway, they have been very comfy from 22 deg up, for an hour duration at low intensity. A little cool in the teens, but bearable. Better than swix and pi, waaaay better than pb borealis.

The deals avail caused me to put new rival on my cx bike last week. I like the crank its super stiff. The shifters work well and ergonomics are good, the feel of the mech is a bit dinky. With road wheels I'm in at 16.7 lbs which is amazing to me. thats nearly a pound less than my road bike.

ok guys, let's talk saddles. i have never not used a saddle with a channel in it, and i've been on the same WTB pure V pro for 7 years. despite liking it well enough, i still get numbness on longer rides, especially during long climbs. i've tried positioning adjustments (lowering saddle, for instance), but it doesn't really help, and the saddle height feels natural otherwise.

since i first got into cycling, i've heard people talk about brooks saddles and how great they are. i've never been able to see it, but my new coworker and her boyfriend just rode from seattle to los angeles, and both of them rave about the B17. i'm most interested in the new rubber brooks saddle, since i don't do leather, and it doesn't require any break-in time. my hangup is that EVERY time i have tried a supposedly "comfortable" saddle without a channel or cutout, it has been miserable. this includes the gobi, concor, flite, etc. should i even bother with another new saddle to try?

eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Sunday, 16 March 2014 04:42 (eleven years ago)

well, brooks are very re-sellable (at least here), so that seems pretty low risk.

on the opposite end would be trying an ism adamo, though the application there is usually quite the opposite to "long climbs." notwithstanding, i have used an ism now for hundreds of tt position miles, and it really does remove _all_ pressure from the taint area. without it, i would have quit doing tts, it was too painful.

i don't know what it'd be like in an upright position, i've not done any extended seated climbs with it. seems like it would still work.

thanks for the adamo tip... this could be interesting.
http://www.ismseat.com/files/imageproxy/saddle_medium/files/images/peak-01.jpg

certainly no brooks in the looks department, but there's probably a greater chance of that solving my issues than a more traditional saddle.

eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Sunday, 16 March 2014 06:02 (eleven years ago)

brooks make a version of the b17 with a cutout, don't think they've done a cambium with a cutout yet. I have selle Italia gel flows of various types on all my bikes. Good cutout and it works for me.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Sunday, 16 March 2014 11:36 (eleven years ago)

i've had great luck with specialized cutout saddles, virtually eliminated the numbness issue for me

I really like driving gloves like this and I had a pair but I lost them, but it's too damn cold in Philly to bike more than a mile or two esp early AM or late PM when I am cycling quite a bit. I'm thinking, though, that I should for my next pair of gloves I should buy something more bike-oriented what with padding and moisture control and all that, but idk is it really necessary if I'm only riding 7-10 mi a day? Can I get something versatile that looks sleek/minimal (i.e. not like a fuckin Pearl Izumi Cyclone) but also cushy for the palms? Or am I asking too much :-/ Note also that I am not made of money and I am not going to pay fucking $195 for tipless Rapha gloves, that is fucked.

kind of out of season now that it's warming up, but i wear caps under my helmets quite a bit (and no other time). i was not able to score a team cap last year with my kit, i was too late, so ive been looking for caps. because im lazy, i just looked at amazon for old trade team replica caps.

http://www.amazon.com/Vintage-Euro-Team-Cycling-Cap/dp/B004YW5RAS/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1430159597&sr=8-15&keywords=cycling+cap

Child transportation ideas, please.

I'll be needing to take Nora to the nursery at work from September. If I go direct, which I will with her, it's a 1.5 mile route, mostly down a straight but reasonably busy road (busy with people going to campus).

Trailer looked good until a friend said he'd never use one on the road because motorists don't see them.

Child seat seems OK.

Would like a cargo bike but they're expensive.

Ideas and thoughts?

Yeah, it's a tough situation. Buddy of mine dropped his kids at care in his trailer, and got hit by a car while pulling the empty trailer on the way home, that pretty much ended the trailer concept for him. I don't recall what his next solution was.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 08:16 (ten years ago)

The only thing I know is that B17 is the popular one. I ride a medium amount (7-10 miles a day) and use it almost exclusively for commuting around the city and not so much for recreational use or long-distances. I've got a road bike with riser bars so I'm a little more upright than dropped bars but I'm certainly not sitting straight up like a cruiser.

I think i have one high country adventure left in me an the trails up high are still clear. The ride goes to 4000m but has a shit ton of hikeabike- basically most of mining road from 3400m to 4000m at 17% thats collapsed over time til now you cant ride it. This concept is so close to what i imagined during my rin this morning, but yeah, better. The little sling cup that holds the post is brilliant, i rather think i can improvise that with my fine duct tape skeez.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peakrider/peakrider-the-first-bike-carrying-system

I scored a bday pres to me- i wanted to replace my 25y/o lugged carbon frame on my dirtdrop bike, and i found a lovely 15 y/o mongoose/sandvik frame. My 97 dean ti was also built by sandvik, so now my roadie and my dirtdrop will be half-brothers. great welds and geometry, both. ‘goose came with a good shape v. light air/oil shock, think i may leave it on for now and take the dirt drop over this- look at the pics tab.

gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 02:45 (six years ago)

And yeah youve seen my pic from my prev trip up that hike- no ferrata at all- its just 17% loose scree at 12k ft which for me is not climbable on the bike, but was totally rideable down.

I’m on stamsted’s twitter and thought about asking him for THE LORE of how to do Argentine-style slogs, but he probably would advise riding it or shouldering it and running or whatever superhuman legends do. (stamsted won montezumas back in the day, and i think the very very nearby grays peak 14er was in that loop set back then).

gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 04:07 (six years ago)

Did the ride, it was long fun and very hard. That hikeabike-y bit from 11200ft to 13100ft, which was a firm 1.3 hours on fresh legs, was 2.3 hours and fucking exhausting after already climbing 5000ft on road and dirt. I was super glad to have done the test piece, because I know I had it, but conditions from fatigue were radically more challenging.

SO i'm in the gear thread because my ride pal had on of those adventure bikey style top tube baglets for phonecam and goodies. i realized i want that. his is magnetic closure and says he's never dislodged gear (i think its a Serfas). he mounted it back against he seatpost, rather then the more typical stem junction. i hate accessing saddle bags, and don't wear cycling jerseys on my mtb rides usually. i need one that will hold a phone, a tube, a co2, maybe a clif bar and a gel. for me that's good for 3-4 hours. if i need more, i'll have a water pack that i can load.

Do you all have top tube bags, and if so what do you recommend?

My recommendation to you all using trails is: https://www.amazon.com/TIMBER-Mountain-Bike-Bell-Release/dp/B0184TO7NY . i really love this thing, you can turn it off, soft, or loud. loud is pretty damn loud and a rough descent. i have been riding with my kid's hs mtb team, and saw a coach with one. it is perfect for high-volume, blind corner-y places.

i like how it do, and i’m legit impressed with the thoroughness of that evans cycle responsiveness. questioners go fairly deep and evans seems to legit at least give a fuck.

Not sure i want thru axle for a multi purpose long range bike. For a trail bike def, for an xc bike probly, but a core adventure bike? not sure. Then i go, why NOT? and i guess... good point really. Going 2x is correct here imo.

what’s the downsides with thru axle ? lack of replacement parts in far flung / rural locales ?

PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

thats what i meant by “good point,” the basis of my reservation is not well-supported. They are def better with suspension, marginally better for steering control, and i’m not aware of failure issues. TY. fwiw i had to get a new shock, and i did not enjoy having to go to 100mm from 80mm. the bike still feels awesome, but a little more mtb-like than before. I think i can reduce the travel and crown height back.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 27 July 2019 21:38 (five years ago)

I just got a 650b wheelset 😎

gbx, Saturday, 27 July 2019 21:39 (five years ago)

👍. Nice! I do think if i replace the ‘goose, it will be a 700/650b multi fit frame like the rodeolabs, or similar to your ride? i’m trying to remember your frameset but spaced it.

guy on traildonkey had 26.5x50mm Nanos here, and it was rigid, and... that trail was an insane jackhammerfest. He is a muuuuch better linefinder than i on descents. That road/trail is 3600’ of pretty insane. a rarely ridden testcase to prove how much you just dont give a phuk about “flow.” part joke, part test, part awesome.

every bit of circumference was good there- my two biggest criticisms of classick 26” are- 1. not roll-y enough for obstacles, and 2. scarcity of great tires/rims. on issue 2 im amost at hoarder stage to keep that ‘goose loose.

lukas i'm "anti-" n+1 in principle, but my behavior is a... problem. still if i was u i'd get another bike then.

In 5 years there will be no such signs- the industry will unitize bikes and e-bikes/mopeds. the counter effect might be larger areas of public land made off limits both, who knows.

I don't have one, so can't offer an informed opinion, but as soon as I'm in a position to bike commute again, I wanna get a cargo e-bike. I have a few friends in portland/chicago that have invested and they're all super stoked on them. CT likes them: https://cyclingtips.com/2019/10/yuba-electric-supermarche-e-cargo-bike-review-the-smile-machine/

this is the one i'm lusting after: https://www.urbanarrow.com/en/shorty

gbx, Thursday, 10 October 2019 16:23 (five years ago)

cargo moto-bikes are cool tho not sure the moto is necessary for me now. like commuter motos make total sense to me so you dont sweat at all, but like, i dont need to make the scene at sprouts or safeway, so pedal for real, bitch.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 10 October 2019 16:32 (five years ago)

yeah, but if i got that UA shorty, I would use it for commuting and then doing errands after work or w/e, so the no-sweat thing would still be attractive

gbx, Thursday, 10 October 2019 16:43 (five years ago)

yup that's convenient. looking at that motocargo, i wonder how much sustained power that can really drop for like 30 secs, i mean 750w plus a person at 200-250W would be fast enough to be fucking awesome even with groceries. even unfaired that's gotta be low 30s? i know they have some rules about limiters and stuff, but it's america and NO LIMITS FOR ME.

seven months pass...

you guys, i now have the most recent post on the 5 or 6 most-recent iltrmb board. where are my people? they have aged-out, moved away, found sweeter fora. or i am, as long i have known, unfun.

but cycling is fun, keep hope alive.

i came to praise covatech duoderm extra-thin 4x4 sheets. i'm sure 4 out of 5 cycling doctors recommend it for those suffering from rubber-side-down incompetence. wash, debride, disinfect, rinse, stick and BE AMAZED. if you're really terrible and you gouged so deep and wide that stitches aren't possible, it's still pretty great, you'll just have fucktons of something called "exudate" for a couple days, which will blow out your dressing sheet to 70% well before the usually recommended 3-7 day exchange period. and also the goo/exudate that floods out is dire. the whole sheet becomes like a soggy, super-fatty piece of un-crisped goose skin. so i know this is yr 2000 tech

*it should be noted this injury was not due to cycling, but my new whole-body workout sideline of "rollerskiing." that shit is ~dangerous~. also, really fun compared to running, but man. it def deserves its own thread, which i will undoubtedly start sometime somewhere. i have yet to meet anyone who does it in denver. so i started a FB group https://www.facebook.com/groups/960730114364491/, trying to find anyone who does it. seems like skimo people should be a bit of a fit, because you can doublepole your lats from a 40.5" to 43"+ coatsize in like 5 months, but i don't know too many skimos. i reached out minimally to friends, but no real interest besides "sounds interesting."

I ordered a new bike. I've been really slack post tendon resection which is bad for me. Decided to try and go in a more bike packing direction, I want to recapture some of the fun I had as a teenager biking across Ireland and France. Just waiting for a delivery date and looking at some nice weekend routes I can do.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 29 May 2020 01:34 (five years ago)

Was never a big presence on this board but by coincidence I have started cycling daily for the first time in about 3 years just last week on my old single speed. So out of shape. Was humbled by a hill I used to do on my commute on friday, felt bad. But I'm just going to keep keep trying to get at least half an hour a day and work my way back up

i need to visit bc someday.

can't wait to hear about new bike day, ed. really sorry to hear about tendon resection, i didn't know they do that. they must, like, reattach it somehow? i had my clavicle resected by a cm, but no fastening is needed for that, the a/c joint just scars itself back together and it's pretty normal, fwiw.

inveterate practitioner of antisocial distancing (Hunt3r), Friday, 29 May 2020 03:13 (five years ago)

i was test riding cargo e-bikes before this all started. going to pick that up again later in the summer.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 29 May 2020 03:16 (five years ago)

I snapped the tendon off the front of my foot and they had to go rooting around in my calf to pull in down. They then strapped it back on with some kind of surgical tape and then months in various casts whilst it healed properly. Luckily I didn’t need any donor tissue but they did have some on standby in case I did.

I’m learning that this bike packing game is not quite like my touring of old. For starters bikepackers seem to like riding with flat pedals and what look like skate shoes or hiking boots. Which is a bit of a revelation as I spent a good deal of my teenage touring days staying in Irish cow barns and I never truly got the muck out of my cleats.

Aw, I always liked my carradice handlebar bag which had all my daily necessities in them, except for the on bike packet of biscuits which went in the front right pannier.

It also had a transparent map pocket on top. Something that seems to have gone the way of the dodo because we all have GPS now. Which is a crying shame, maps contain so much more possibility.

inveterate practitioner of antisocial distancing (Hunt3r), Saturday, 30 May 2020 01:02 (five years ago)

I am used to weird handling thanks to the stupid long stem on my current bike.

Also I very much see the bar Bag as old times, however I see rapha make one now so I guess we have gone full circle.

Anyway bike initially will be very vanilla. 700X30 wheels and my current speedplays. I wasn’t quite ready to got 650b right off the bat. Although it is Force 1 AXS which is pretty exiting, also it seems crazy that you can get a 1x with more gears than my first few bikes, more useable gears than many of my bikes and almost more range than triples I’ve had.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 30 May 2020 01:22 (five years ago)

Also I’m going to have to learn how do I shot tubeless.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 30 May 2020 01:23 (five years ago)

i've gotten pretty acquainted with a local adventure/bike packing frame manufacturer. the chief rides 2x, a few of his buddies ride 1x, and i've told him i can't settle for less than the 640% that i get on my ancient but lovely 3x9. i can do that on a 2x11 now i think, but it requires some fettling and fancying. for a while i'd have needed di2, but i think no longer. the amount of gear specialization that's out there now is so incredible.

btw the chief wrote up his most recent event: https://www.bicycling.com/racing/a32433034/what-its-like-to-do-atlas-mountain-race/?fbclid=IwAR0Z8pX7_dIIw0-4777Vm9K0UfmeeqQmxf-OkmCKeQSpwVstBlbs9qxOWkU.

tubeless is easy and great. if you don't have a compressor, a pressure bottle is helpful when you have to mount up new tires, that's what i have. i think some pumps have integrated ones now, i guess. aside from seating new mounts, the only annoyance of tubeless at all to me, and it's totally not a big deal, is peeling dry latex out if you've left it alone for months, and topping off yr sealant every couple months. i use orange shot, it's fine.

(i seriously wouldn't bother with tubeless at road widths/pressures, it's not that much a benefit imo, but that's not a popular opinion with everyone).

inveterate practitioner of antisocial distancing (Hunt3r), Saturday, 30 May 2020 02:22 (five years ago)

still cycling away but (as ed knows from the slack) I’ve been struggling with shoulder/neck issues, which have recurred following the injury I sustained last august when trying to ride from the bottom of scotland to the top (!) on an ill-fitting bike. sucks. and I can’t even get a bike fit for obvious reasons -
shouldn’t have put it off over winter.

thinking about taking up pilates (and getting physio when I can) AND eventually getting proper fits on all my bikes. can still ride about 35-40 miles but that’s max before it flares and tightens :/

||||||||, Sunday, 31 May 2020 14:03 (five years ago)

My bike now has a ship date but not for a couple of weeks (boo). However we did just buy my wife a new electric town bike and boy is it fun. American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 09:28 (four years ago)

for daily rides, I carry a stupid amount of stuff really (all stuffed into the frame bag) - frame pump, tube, multi-tool, lube, patch kit (with patches, tire boot, painkillers, presta-schrader adaptor), cable ties, etc

for bikepacking, all of the above plus: terra nova wild country zephyros 1; alpkit mattress; decathlon three season down sleeping bag; flip flops; fujifilm X100; etc

top tube bag = battery pack; wallet; sweets/nuts

sleeping bag goes into the handlebar bag. it's only a small 1.5l lomo bag. might upgrade it to the 14l apidura expidition bag.

tent gets stuffed into bottom of the seat pack. mattress, down jacket, some off-bike wear in there too and toiletries

frame bag fit to bursting with spares, tools, etc.

Bike is going great. Although I haven’t left the city, because I am not allowed. Just doing loops around town and up and down the bouley at the moment. Planning what my first long rides should be, there’s a nice unsurfaced climb up the back of kinglake which I want to go back to. Originally I was thinking my first overnight would to a B&B, but given the situation wild camping might be the only way to get out of town this year.

I guess the major revelation is running such a big (30mm) tyre, it makes everything feel much less fraught.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:11 (four years ago)

that is a good feeling. I ride a lot of asphalt on a tubeless 2.1” at 25/28psi in between trails and theyre slow but so comfy.

are u in Melb? does it still have all the trolley tracks? those could be deadly i should think, i’d def want like 43mm sneaks.

retail rage is for suckers (Hunt3r), Saturday, 1 August 2020 03:45 (four years ago)

Life in Melbourne means learning how to deal with tram tracks. I’ve only once stacked on a railroad crossing and that was as a 12 year old coming out of Cherbourg ferry port on a tour, a great lesson in never doing that again.

I’m going to explore some bigger noblier rubber at some point. These wheels can take up to 40mm so I might go there when the slicks wear out.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Saturday, 1 August 2020 04:23 (four years ago)

I think I am coming to the conclusion that the 44T ring is too big for me with the 10 rear cog (and the 12 and the 14). The ghost of Sheldon Brown nuggets I could be happy with a 38T Ring or maybe even smaller.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Monday, 3 August 2020 11:46 (four years ago)

So you mean that you can _never_ realistically need a gear as big as 44-10.

I was gonna use and link bikecalc, because it’s great for this use and i use it like twice a week these days— aaaand today’s it’s either down or gone and i will die if i can’t have it. *sob* seriously i hope it’s not dead.

Erm so yeah 44 is not small but 1x only gives u one chance.

Not a technological match, but on my nexus 7 commuter i always tried to make gear 5 (which is the1:1) my “low threshhold power-speed,” loaded, on a flat, windless, surface— on that bike. I think that was a 38-16?

retail rage is for suckers (Hunt3r), Monday, 3 August 2020 15:16 (four years ago)

I'm pretty unfit right now and I can always switch back, but my desire to totally drill it on the the flat or on descents is pretty minimal right now. The biggest pain is I think SRAM now makes you take off the crank to change the ring now.

HI can y'all help us please?

we are not serious Bike People or street racers or anything

but we want to get exercise use out of our bikes even at a time when hauling them down to the street and braving the dangers and hassles of NYC riding is just not viable, for various reasons.

we started to look at indoor "bike trainers" but got a little bit of sticker shock, and overwhelmed by all the features and competing websites with a million different lists. we don't know the market, we don't have our bearings. we were kind of imagining just like, some kind of metal stand that you could set a bike on, and pedal away while you listen to podcasts. but would that work? is all the 'trainer' resistance hardware necessary in order to get a real workout? we can't tell or understand. the review sites don't show you the price until you click through. it's just all very overwhelming. basically we're wondering what name or product category we should even be googling here. any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Had four bikes stolen out of my garage on Friday night, including my fancy go-fast carbon di2 road bike. Luckily renter's insurance will cover the loss, and 2 of the 4 I was actually trying to sell. Ironically the only loss that hurts is the one worth the least amount of money: My wife's 1990 aluminum Miyata around-town bike. All the other ones were new and served a purpose, but that one was old and wierd and charming. The first bike my wife ever bought for herself, by herself, and the one she rode to all the protests this summer (it took some tear-gas and pepper-balls to the frame). That one was posted to OfferUP that day, and I made an offer, planning on showing up to the meet with a squad of friends to get it back, but got no response. Eat shit bike thieves.

Two of the four stolen bikes recovered! Last week, one (wife's trek/gary fisher presidio gravel bike) by the local bike shop. The guy who works there (a friend) noticed somebody with it trying to put air into the tire with the pump they have sitting out on the sidewalk in front of the shop. He ran out and grabbed it, much to the dismay of the noticeably altered dude who had it. I brought them a bunch of beer and halloween candy to thank them. The other one, my wife's prized Miyata, just today at lunch. One of my close friends noticed a woman holding it in the parking lot of the 7-11 right off the freeway offramp. He ran in there and got it back for $20.00. It's had it's saddle and pedals swapped out with another of the (still missing) bikes but it's otherwise in fine shape. Getting one stolen bike back is a rare stroke of luck, but to have two back is shockingly lucky.

Well the bike theft story ends on a very good note; Insurance gave us a big check to replace what was taken, and my friend coincidentally had a very nice 2019 Pinarello Prince with all the bells and whistles for sale. He is almost exactly my height, so it's a perfect fit. I can't help but be a little embarassed at how well I came out from the whole ordeal. If I were to try and sell my old race bike (which I was planning on doing), it almost certainly wouldn't have been this easy. Thanks thieves, I guess?
