What are 'points'? (in biggest ride / climb)

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 1 January 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

Points are calculated as (watts/kg)^3 at each data point. The points for each data point are then summed up to give you a point total for the ride, normalized by a constant to scale the points measure for easy viewing. 10 points is an average ride. 100 points is epic.

malicious humor victim (Hunt3r), Saturday, 6 March 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

strava.com, it's their own rating system which is tbh i don't quite get 100% either. Data points are gps based so the variables are your speed and elevation.

My year to date is rubbish - 1,109 miles to the end of april, which is between 250 and 300 miles each month (v cold Jan and Feb, and away for three weeks straddling March and April), with zero long rides. So my fitness is okay but my stamina is no doubt gone and I'm just treading water. Am envious/scared of most of your accounts.

one month passes...

May 2010: 258.2 miles (May 2009: 369.5)
That's a big drop-off compared to last month and considerably less than I managed last year. I've got so much work on at the moment that it's difficult to fit much riding in, which is frustrating. It's going to be even worse for the next month or so - I might end up racing on Saturdays and doing no other riding at all, surely not a great idea.

3,893 miles for 2010. Pretty disappointing. I'd have broken last year's (just over 4,000) easily without accidents & resultant injuries but you can't really say that.

Also, roller miles don't count :)

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

Right, time to crank out the stats. December was another hopeless month: officially ( http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/2010/december.html ) the coldest December for 100 years, snow and ice making it impossible to cycle for large chunks, and then a horrible cough-virus-fever thing which I'm only just starting to shake off. Mark C, Monday, 4 April 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

I think in the interests of fairness we should combine my total with Mark's in future, to see what my total would be if I did any commuting, or what Mark's total would be if he did anything other than commuting. Then our stats might be slightly more competitive with those from the other side of the Atlantic.

August: 364 miles

BUT that doesn't really tell the story. August was a very strange month. No cycling at all for the first nine days (foreign holiday), 362 miles in the middle 18 days (so at a rate that would have given 626 miles for the month), and then no cycling at all for the final four days (due to crash). Those 13 days of inactivity have left my year-to-date total falling behind the 2010 equivalent for the first time since February.

The Wichita Referee's Assistant (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 2 January 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

I did 3015 miles in the saddle in 2011, having done 839 in the last five months of 2010, after I got my first bike in a decade in July 2010.

234 miles in November, 391 miles in December, which was my third highest monthly total (518 in August and 407 in July). In December last year I rode only 19 miles; mind you, it was 26 degrees warmer (centigrade) this Boxing Day than last year - it wasn't riding weather at -14. I rode at least 10 miles every day from 21st December to 2nd January, covering well over 250 miles in that time.

I think I've reached stability. Very few long rides this year, no sportives at all, but three night rides partly made up for it. No reason to think that, barring injury, it should be any different in 2012.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

I did manage at least 300 miles every month apart from December, which was a tiny goal of sorts.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

This year I want to do more miles than last year overall, ideally as close to 4000 as possible. I also want to do more long rides; I've rarely gone over 50 miles, and most rides are 20ish.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

not actually sure what I've done this year but it's only around 1500miles, which is poor. I need to pick one recording device and stick with it, that's for sure.

I've set 3000miles as a target for this year (getting out on non-commutes is bloody difficult with kids)which will include at least one multi-day thing (potentially a couple of TdF stage finishes in July) and a few night rides - the December one was freaking ace.... and a bit cold; down to -4, but dry fortunately.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 4 May 2012 06:44 (thirteen years ago)

Good luck you two. Where are you riding to this time - are you heading anywhere Cavendish's lake? I wasn't working today so went off up into the Essex lanes (56 miles) - there was indeed a lot of surface water and the occasional section of road that had turned into a stream or pond. Also - it's cold. I had to wear winter tops and a gillet in the end. I set off (foolishly) in shorts, but ended up riding to my nearest bike shop and buying some leg warmers. I got a rear wheel puncture at the 41-mile mark in the rain, which wasn't fun to sort out. Then literally as soon as I got back on the bike the chain came off and I had to sort that out.

It's not just the riding in the countryside in the pitch black bit about these night rides that fails to attract me. It's the fact it's at night time, when I'd rather be sleeping. But I'll try to hook up with you two for some kind of (daylight) ride at some point, if I can overcome the large obstacle that is most of London between us.

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 May 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

Tonight's was supposed to be just me (and the regulars) but I managed to pick up a bug from Vic and don't want to be too far from home iyswim... So I'm hopefully going to go to Brighton on Sunday morning along with a bunch of veteran HGVs.
Riding at night in the countryside is very liberating, strong lights definitely required but it's truly great.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Again, I 100% agree BUT occasionally it's worth doing something outside your comfort zone. And this is one of those times. Riding in the dark countryside is awesome, when you're in a group, and have a half-decent light.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 1 February 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

I always report in kilometres, it's the global standard, miles are obtuse and archaic. Back in my teenage touring days I started using kilometres because maps are in kilometres and it makes navigation easier.

At work, if engineers want to wind me up they show me graphs in lbf or Foot Pounds, it owrks so I probably need to get out more.

I've had a pain in my left knee for the last couple of weeks. I haven't adjusted anything so the only thing I can think of is that it's because I've been riding much more than normal. It's not too bad, just irritating, and doesn't prevent me riding so at the moment I'm just ignoring it and carrying on. Is this unwise?

Hamburglar's smiling too (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 8 August 2013 07:16 (eleven years ago)

Check saddle height anyway, I felt weird on my bike but hasn't changed my saddle height. Measured it and it was about 30 mm(!) too low. It slipped. A lot.

joe sixpac hologram (Hunt3r), Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago)

Cleat + saddle position fixed my knee issues . I was told that nee should be directly over the pedal axle when the crank is horizontal and the cleat is centered under the widest part of the foot. The net result was the saddle moving back whilst staying at the same height, cleats moved back as well.

cozen, Saturday, 2 November 2013 10:43 (eleven years ago)

I don't know how on earth you can squeeze 800 miles in.

i'm a bit selfish for one thing, but i get in a lot of commute miles- maybe 100 a week. i justify it as only about 30 or 40 minutes or so extra a day, because it's how i get to work. driving with traffic to work, plus parking and walking to office, is 45 or even 50 mins each way for me. bike/rail to work is 40 to 45 mins each way. riding in, door to desk is about an hour, home is about 65 mins. and i'm really lucky too, most ppl in my situation don't even have an extra 30 mins a day. or colorado's climate.

this all said, 800 was the most i've done under this arrangement, and i'm feelin pretty stale on it.

I even had an outside chance of breaking through the 5,000-mile barrier this month, but I got ill and didn't ride at all for most of my Christmas break. Zero, I think. Or close to zero. On January 7 I played my first game of 5-a-side of the year, and with about ten minutes to go I twisted / hyper-extended my right knee. It is still swollen, nearly a month later, and I have an MRI scan tonight to try and figure out what I did to it. I've been told to cycle to aid recovery but it's been so wet and windy I've not thought it was safe to do so yet; any risk of a fall and aggravating it when I'm injured and not confident just sin't worth it.

Take care man, time and therapy and docs if necessary, you'll get through.

419 for February. Feel almost guilty saying it, seeing as I seem to be the only person left not struck down by physical calamities.

I forgot to do March because I was on holiday. I will rectify this before too long and all will be right with the world again.

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 01:57 (nine years ago)

i have learned that the gearing on my road bike just is not suited at all to the hills around here. i dumped all of them into my granny and was still having to stand on the pedals while my pals were happily spinning away at 95rpm

biking is hard :(

jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 11:45 (nine years ago)

shoulder pain on one side only... what could be cause of that? stem too long? saddle-to-bar drop too high? odd it's on one side (left) only

any ideas?

cozen, Wednesday, 20 April 2016 18:39 (nine years ago)

Don't know, but I've been suffering knee pain on one side (left) only. It keeps clicking when I properly extend my leg.

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 20:10 (nine years ago)

Finally calculated it - March was 334 miles for me

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 21:04 (nine years ago)

My knees have clicked like a hipster at a jazz club since I was a teenager.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 21 April 2016 11:38 (nine years ago)

Gbx does Hurricane mtn Rd still exist because I did that in 1990 and it was steep.

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 21 April 2016 16:09 (nine years ago)

The best thing about eastern mtns was that 'wtf is a switchback' spirit.

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 21 April 2016 16:11 (nine years ago)

dunno about hurricane mtn rd, but the general theme out here definitely seems to be STFU (straight the fuck up)

i've got big-boy gears on my road bike (53/39 up front and i think the biggest cog is 25t?) and that was fine in minnesota and really not that fine out here. tryna decide if i should just flip the road bike and put the money into my heavy but dependable cross check

two weeks pass...

Just 242 for April. Too much work on, can only get out once a week nowadays.

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 6 May 2016 21:57 (nine years ago)

I'm not even on 500 for the year yet. Fucking knee. Still no hills. Manage maybe 40 a week at the moment - about 10-15 commuting and then maybe 25 at the weekend pulling the trailer normally.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 08:22 (nine years ago)

three weeks pass...

342 for May. It's my half-term break this week so I'd been hoping to get a few rides in, but the weather is shite (40mph winds and heavy rain yesterday, no sun forecast until Sunday). Did a time trial last night on the velopark circuit (next to the Olympic velodrome) with both shoes feeling like they had a jug of water sloshing around inside them: https://youtu.be/87ZOBTVsGbo

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 1 June 2016 08:25 (nine years ago)

128 for May, lowest since I spent August in the hospital. Not much comment other than I fear I'm ending biking? Probably not totally, but ~effectively~?

Sort of off topic, but affecting my bike attitude is the Broeckx thing, which is so sad, and really close to home. Was so hoping they wouldn't need to craney him, which I am guessing was the pressure reduction. I was trying to get Dutch news and Google's translation rendered the headline to be "Broeckx undergoes double lobotomy" and I was just "!!!!??"

164 for June. Not even on 1,000 for the year yet. I did kick a football at physio for the first time this morning though, and that felt good, and did 25 miles with some steady climbing yesterday morning at a decent tempo. I'm getting there.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 4 July 2016 13:05 (eight years ago)

327 for June. Lots of social rides and coincidental reunions on the road, it's been fun.

284 in July, my biggest monthly total since June 2015. I'll take that. Significant chunk of it was 90 miles done in one weekend when Em and Nora were away.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 5 August 2016 08:20 (eight years ago)

but I spent the month in north america, so

cozen, Saturday, 6 August 2016 01:07 (eight years ago)

386, but I think that adds in my running miles which is probly like 25.

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Saturday, 6 August 2016 15:43 (eight years ago)

I clocked up 539 for July up to the 26th and then spent the best part of two weeks off the bike - just got back from holiday in France.

remain in the privacy of the booth (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 1 September 2016 22:25 (eight years ago)

261 last month. I have a feeling I will find that difficult to match this month; two weekends away and less favourable weather...

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 12 September 2016 10:10 (eight years ago)

I did 302 for September. Only just realised that the month has changed: I wasn't able to ride for more than two weeks because of illness and stuff. Back out today and felt substantially less fit already.

Ireland's Industry (that is what we are) (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 9 October 2016 15:56 (eight years ago)

only 227, mtb taking it's toll on mileage and time. Like every mtb ride involves 30-60 mins of driving that could otherwise be riding. it's bullshit, but built into the system.

April was actually 412 - I accidentally included my meagre jogging miles in the cycling total. May is 354 and I won't be able to add to that before the month ends.
