Well hello dere!
Like Mr. Call All Destroyer I have neither heard of nor seen a Boston Bun in my life. They look pretty good though. Would try.
You should probably add CAD to the thread title since he may be more qualified than I to answer NE related questions although I am more than happy to try/assist.
Any others?

What do I look like, a board admin? Anyway...
Is it true that McDonalds will sell you a Lobster Roll up there? Do they call it a McLobster Roll??
― "too worldly to compete on /b/" (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
Hmmmm . . . I haven't seen lobster rolls at McDonalds but to be fair, I don't go there very often. The internet tells me that they were, in fact, a seasonal menu item available in some parts of NE and eastern Canada.
It's apparently called the McLobster Sandwich:
http://www.gunaxin.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/mclobster-sign-218x300.jpg
There are so many places where you can get good lobster rolls that I'd be a little nervous about getting on at McDs but would probably try anyway out of curiosity.

yeah the lobster roll gets advertised as a seasonal/limited item. but it is such a delicate and wonderful creation that it deserves better than a bastardized mcd's edition.

Hartford was ahead of its time. Didn't they turn the old Montreal Forum into a mall?
According to Nick Horvath's Wikipedia entry, he played for the Adelaide 36ers which I certainly will rep him for that. However, he left for the South Dragons, which makes him the worst person alive.

~~~***~~~INTERMISSION~~~***~~~
Now that Australia's NBL is PROBABLY dead, King Boy Pato, will rank THE TOP TEAM TEAMS that have played in Australia's premier basketball competition.
1. ADELAIDE 36ERS
Back before the SANFL reduced to second league status by those wankers from Melbourne, there was only one team for South Australians. No, it wasn't the local shitty cricket team. It was straight outta Apollo Stadium then THE CLIPSAL POWERHOUSE with the razzle dazzle in blue, red and gold headed up by The Chairman of the Boooards, Mark Davis! I might have only been a year old when the 36ers won their first NBL Championship but I grew up hearing the stories of how the Super Sixers lit up Apollo Stadium, led by a man called Ken Cole who coached the team in between snorting coke. Unfortunately, when we won that trio of turn-of-the-century championships, we had a slightly less exciting coach: Phil Smyth.
"Famous fans include television presenter Grant Denyer, and former World Number 1 Tennis Player Lleyton Hewitt."
2. SOUTH EAST MELBOURNE MAGIC
For the name alone. Excessively geographically precise AND a lazy-as-you-like BA ripoff nickname.
3. EASTSIDE SPECTERS
Apparently the name was RACIST.
4. GOLD COAST COUGARS
Now when you talk about Gold Coast Cougars, it's 30 and 40 something women with excessively fake tans??
5. GEELONG SUPERCATS
This shows you how popular and awesome and great basketball was in Australia. Aussie Rules had to do with merely "Cats" but the hoops heroes upped the ante to infinity with SUPERCATS!!
6. PERTH WILDCATS
I grudging give mad respect to the bros out west. They're not the Melbourne Tigers or Sydney Kings and they helped up keep the Mitsubishi Trophy away from the big smoke.
7. WEST SYDNEY RAZORBACKS
Would be higher if it wasn't for the "Sydney Spirit" DEBACLE!!
8. SINGAPORE SLINGERS
Can you believe that Singapore wasn't into third-rate basketball???
9. WOLLONGONG HAWKS
If the new NBL doesn't have them in, it won't be the NBL. PUTTING IT BACK IN OUR COMMUNITY, YO.
10. TOWNSVILLE CROCODILES
You weren't expecting the Canberra Cannons, were you?
guys jimmies is secretly racist.
― unlucky son (call all destroyer), Saturday, 27 June 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)
So the multi-colored ones are called sprinkles, it's only the brown ones that called jimmies. And here's a little info I found about the racist claim:
The Boston Globe investigated the origin of jimmies last winter after a reader inquired about a rumor that the term originally was racist - the idea being that some people refer only to chocolate ones as jimmies, and rainbow ones as sprinkles. Perhaps, the reader surmised, the word descended from Jim Crow.
The Globe found no evidence of this, but did cite a commentary in 1986 on National Public Radio by the late Boston poet John Ciardi, who claimed: "From the time I was able to run to the local ice cream store clutching my first nickel, which must have been around 1922, no ice cream cone was worth having unless it was liberally sprinkled with jimmies."
Ciardi, the Globe said, "dismissed Just Born as claim-jumpers looking to trademark someone else's sweet inspiration." His jimmies had come first.
Another theory on the origin of the name:
Back in the 1930s, the Just Born candy company of Bethlehem produced a topping called chocolate grains. The man who ran the machine that made these chocolate grains was named Jimmy Bartholomew.
"Thus, his product became known as jimmies," said Ross Born, the chief executive officer. He was told this story by his grandfather and company founder, Sam Born. Just Born registered jimmies as its trademark, and continued producing jimmies until the mid-1960s - which is why the name was so popular here.
The trademark expired and soon after, Just Born stopped making jimmies.
Will we ever know the truth?
― ☺☻☺☻come on ppl now smile on u brother☺☻☺☻ (ENBB), Saturday, 27 June 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)
1. I pledge allegiance to the cape . . .
2. Having been inside Boston City Hall, I can attest that this monstrosity is as awful on the inside as it is out the outside. It looks like a prison. I am not a fan of this particular architectural style.
3. FRIED CLAMS are deeeeee-licious. In fact, just last weekend I traveled up the coast to sample some of these babies. Here is the photographic evidence:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/FriedClams.jpg
It is important, however, that one orders fried clam strips rather than fired whole bellied clams. The former are amazing while the latter are slimy, gross and blech. I mean I'm sure there are some fans out there but most ppl I know also seem to prefer the strips.
I also sampled something called a clam cake which looked something like this:
http://www.roadfood.com/photos/9469.jpg
It was basically just a ball of fried dough with some clam bits in it. Interesting but I don't know that I'd order one again.
new england is beautiful but there are plenty of ugly shitholes here
― marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:19 (eleven years ago)
hahab yea xp
or springfield, or new bedford, or lynn, or chelsea, or holyoke, or or or or or
also bar harbor is awesome. spend as much time as possible in acadia, that whole park is utterly spectacular. wife & i hiked 3 or 4 long, full days there and barely saw any 2 trails that looked similar. and we barely made a dent in the park. such a diverse landscape. cliff trails, rocky beach trails, birch trails, pine trails, lake perimeter trails, mountain trails, dense deciduous trails. it was really amazing.
bar harbor had an amazing vegan restaurant, eden cafe, but yelp says it's closed. bummer, it was really cool and the owners were awesome people who make all kinds of cool art in the off season.
otm. maine has some depressed shitholes too if am not mistaken.
new england's prettiness is primarily restricted to cute smaller towns and rural areas. there some exceptions, boston obviously has a few attractive neighborhoods
― marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:30 (eleven years ago)
both vermont and maines larger cities are quite nice imo, there are def some shitholes in n new england, i sit not far from one as we speak, but the hit ratio is much higher up here generally, you dont get anything like an entire state covered in vinyl siding (r.i.)
The pizza in new haven is okay I never actually went to sals or pepes the storefronts I would always just eat the free stuff they delivered
Modern's is good only because they call it apizza instead of pizza
BAR had good mashed potato pizza before it became a thing I think plus they brew their own beer
My favorite actually was brick oven pizza which I think is a chain
Don't go to Louis Lunch it's a scam
BAR definitely does not have the old world new haven italian charm but tbf their pizza is really good. beer is nothing special but it's nice enough.
somehow i have never been to the original pepe's, i've been to the fairfield one and it's great.
― marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)
My favorite anecdote about new haven is this apocryphal story I heard there
That new haven and new york were both major ports back in the 19th century and were comparable
Then some law or something happened so they diverted all the ships to New York and not New Haven
If only this reg hadn't done that then New Haven would have been as big as New York today
It makes me smile because I'm like... aw that's sweet but don't kid yourselves
― 龜, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:51 (eleven years ago)
I just checked on google maps and Sally's has apizza in their name too. Apizza apizza apizza apizza
yea the old houses are awesome, cool little towns, i like all the woods, nice combination of more densely populated areas with picturesque rural landscapes. lots of good farmers markets. i love how easily accessible everything is. liberal politics are nice too. basically everybody is liberal here. there is definitely some white conservatism and it's not the west coast or anything but it's nice to live in an overall progressive area. gay marriage in most (if not all?) states. since i work in academia it's also cool to have so many colleges and universities here, too. having the ocean nearby is nice too.
I have lived very close to some body of water (usually the ocean) for all of my life with the exception of the two years I spend in England but there's a river there so that counts. When I was very small we lived in Key West and then Long Island/Fire Island. You can get to somewhere on the water within about 20 mins from most places in Boston. I feel most me by the water and would love to really live right near the ocean one day. Swimming in the ocean is one of my most favorite things. Anyway, this picture is going to be my daily calm from now on. I'm putting it here so I can come and look at it whenever I need to.
awesome, beautiful gif ENBB! i agree that there are few things as wonderful as swimming in the ocean. i feel at peace and at the same time i am overwhelmed by its power, something about being immersed in this vast body of water is just really humbling? sounds kind of hippy-dippy but i am very hippy-dippy
don't go nantasket beach, i'm warning everybody here
i don't know a whole lot of swimming holes, in western mass there is a very nice one that is a short 5-10 minute walk from the montague book mill. the book mill is one of my favorite places in the world, no hyperbole. admrl you probably know of it already but it's a used bookstore built into an old mill building on this creek and there's a really good cafe with sandwiches and beer and coffee, plus a small art gallery and a record shop. it rules. it's kind of a perfect summer day to go to the book mill for lunch, browse for a while, and then do the short walk to the swimming hole and hang out there for a while.
― marcos, Friday, 20 June 2014 13:33 (eleven years ago)
Yes, I know it, though not the swimming hole!
I love the Book Mill but their book selection is pretty naff. I'm a reasonable bibliophile and have never found anything I want there. But it's a nice place to lunch/snack/work if you can find somewhere to sit.
― maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Friday, 20 June 2014 13:37 (eleven years ago)
I am into this weather though. I never lived anywhere with this sunny/humidity/thunderstorm cycle and that is cool. I like sitting on my porch and watching storms. It rains more in one day here than it does in an entire year in LA!
lol I don't mind Nastasket. I've never been to go to the beach there but I kind of love cheesy beach/boardwalk towns every now and then for the people watching, arcades and ice cream. :)
― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 20 June 2014 14:42 (eleven years ago)
