I want to say something positive about women here that might be stereotyping, but positively. I work for a company that is all women except me—it’s very small and in the art world—and I have never really felt excluded or like I didn’t belongg. If the situation was reversed and it was all men with one woman, I’m not sure this would be the case.

A manager began a meeting today by outlining and displaying on the projection wall her planning and timekeeping app, which had all these colors and bubbles and slots and icons. She did this to explain how she would be taking our design proposals for the new website from its original file and organizing it into this new compartment.

Yes, the original file was actually just a Google document on which the four of us had, in tandem chain-poetry style, typed out our single-spaced ideas using only Times New Roman 12pt font. It was about 16-20 pages long. We did it this way because Slack had too many bells and whistles.

So I 100% totally get why she was taking all of that information and putting it into a more viable format. What I didn't appreciate was her taking 25 goddamm minutes to EXPLAIN this whole situation to us after she had already made her point in the first 30 seconds and I was just exhausted and hungry after that.

working in a woman-centered environment has definitely given me a deeper appreciation for that relational style and i would be happy were it to become the default relational style.

yeah i'll defend that. to me manspreading is about male "self-expression" in a way that diminishes the ability of non-male forms of expression to exist. i get not liking being told to "take up less space" - i try to frame it as "am i making enough room for others to comfortably be part of this space?". and often, the answer is no, because men aren't socialized to take other people's needs into account.

I think that’s it man alive. As a teenager I spoke in a fast and quiet monotone to try to rush through the things I had to say. I had to learn to not feel like I’m wasting people’s time when I speak. Might have gone too far in the other direction since then but still I never feel like being confident in social situations is a step toward “dominating” others or squeezing them out. To the contrary, being more “presentl in the room puts people at ease.

yeah, that thread sucks, it's definitely a good idea to just port all discussion over to a similar, but more stupidly named thread, as that will completely ensure that the discussion won't descend to that level again

@ Treeship and man alive, I think the goal is to hear the criticism and not feel diminished. I was very brutally tossed into a fire on a Facebook discussion about six years ago by a friend for 'taking up too much space' and felt extremely hurt by not only the content of the criticism, but the delivery. In a conversation with a white female activist friend subsequently, who does immense amounts of work for indigenous rights, I asked her, "in your life, how often are you told to make space by dint of your whiteness in the conversation?" She told me an opinion of hers was shot down as "colonizer thinking" every couple weeks or so, and that she had learned to get used to it. What I mean is, the more engaged you are, the more criticism you may face, and so it's a part of being a better ally, I guess

um, if the heat leakage is def traceable to the gaskets sealing the door, then replacing them seems like the obviously indicated solution, especially if one seems loose to your (untrained) perceptions. I, too, have no idea how this ought to be accomplished, but seeking expert advice, assistance or direct employment strikes me as a sensible move.

First question might!

1. Find the model number for the appliance (on the door or on the back).

2. Open a web browser (there are several, widely available).

3. Type the model number into the search bar of your preferred search engine. Among the first results should be: aftermarket replacement parts.

4. If there are user-replaceable gaskets, buy them and try that. The hinge itself as well. And it will likely come with precisely the right mounting hardware, eliminating guesswork on that front.

Personally I don't like the idea of just adding washers willy-nilly and hoping for the best.

I changed the brake pads on my car with my dad over Xmas break. Turned out one of the calipers was bad so we had to replace one of those too.

I've recently learned that replacing a light switch is actually (a.) incredibly easy and (b.) incredibly dangerous!

I've got this idea of setting up a home-repair YouTube channel with bad tim-and-eric graphic titles from iMovie, lots of holding the phone camera with the left hand while loosening bolts with the right hand, etc. The novelty would be along the lines of the unreliable narrator not knowing what the hell he's doing.

But not in an obvious way, like putting the red clamp on the black tab and the black clamp on the red tab. More like "okay, this washer hasn't been draining properly. First, before we begin, we're going to turn off the power and empty the tub here with this plastic pitcher" ... (one hour later...)

I've also always noticed some weird passive-aggressive vibes from Dads talking to their off-screen child holding the cellphone. "Are you pointing it over here? Can you see the nut and bolt? Is it in focus? QUIT SHAKING IT," but I don't know how to make that funny.

I do know the best advice comes from upper Midwesterners, the most patronizing from the Southerners, and the funniest are those old New York guys who use camera "tricks" like recording the breaker box, stopping the camera, stepping into the frame, and then start recording again, so that they pop magically into the picture.

happy to report that removal of door (theres a knack to this) and simple taking apart, resettling hinges and seals and reconstruction and rehanging (theres a knack to this) has the door as tight and right as a fella could wish

i was somewhat forced into action by coming home to the smell (but not other part) of gingerbread three times this week due to inconsistent bake

tried adding washers at various points around the hinges tonight for a few hours but only succeeded in knackering the lock tab on left hinge while tryin to force it

ordered new hinges fifty quid the pair delivered not too bad rly

the bake element in our oven shorted out with an unexpected fireworks display ... I am now waiting for delivery of the replacement part
