gender may be the traditional way to identify all people, including hypothetical ones, but that doesn't mean it isn't totally arbitrary and redundant.

Also, jeggings always seem to be on girls lacking in self-confidence who are trying way too hard appearance-wise, so maybe that's why I find them sad; the line between sexy and tawdry being well behind the wearer.

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

k¸ (darraghmac), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure about it but I like how it makes you think more about the player's general role and purpose than just where you want him stood when you've got the ball.

But I've got a left midfielder who, when I play him wide in a 3-5-2, the assistant manager and the formation board insist that he's out of position. Think the engine might treat the wide dudes in that formation as very advanced wing backs or something.

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

To be fair you want the wide midfielders in that set-up to be covering back and he is a bit lavender in the tackle, like.

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

did any of you guys have one of these as young boys?

sarahel, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

i had a hello kitty one.

peacocks, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

guys - how do you feel about cartoon characters that lack noses? some guys seem to really be into anime and stuff like that, which always creeps me out because esp. the girls do not have noses, like it's some pathological anti-nose aesthetic. peacocks' hello kitty post reminded me of this, because the nose-lack bothered me about hello kitty as well.

sarahel, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

like the no-nose thing is some equivalent to no-pubic hair - which can be seen as a fear of _actual_ women.

sarahel, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

i suspect it's because noses are hard to draw on cartoon characters without looking comical or unsightly

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

i am very down w/ noses btw. noses are rad

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

StanM, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

hello kitty has a small oval nose, but you're right- she doesn't have a real cat nose. maybe that could be seen as a fear of _actual_cats?

I've never met a dude who said "I don't know, I just really can't stand girls with noses!"

peacocks, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

you're talking about a difference of like 10 cents though ... it's easier if you take the screw with you to the store. Do your stores not have self-serve bins of screws, bolts, nuts, washers, etc. where you can pick out what you want? Trying to understand why you had order it.

This thread reminds me of my work holiday party, wherein I was cornered by a middle-aged ex-cop coworker, an affable enough guy but one I don't really know at all. He started telling me long, elaborate stories about his hot rod/drag racing days and it was full of car descriptions that might as well have been in aramaic--"He had the fully-stocked, GT122 with the factory specs -- this was before they switched to the newer chassis in 73 -- and this thing just hummed. And his other car he wouldn't even take out, it was a mint, 68 'Tago, but he had modded it out with a 3.2 engine and red-wall tires" and I just had to be like "yeah, totally" like I knew what the fuck he was talking about.

that's tough, man

on the other hand you've been pining after a powerwasher for seven years iirc - when you're nearly at the point where two generations of nexus-6 replicants will have been born and died maybe it's time to give up on the dream

is that after seven years I should want a much better power washer than was the original yen

Yeah I don't have any masonry of any type but moldy masonry sounds likely not to enjoy a power wash.

A manager began a meeting today by outlining and displaying on the projection wall her planning and timekeeping app, which had all these colors and bubbles and slots and icons. She did this to explain how she would be taking our design proposals for the new website from its original file and organizing it into this new compartment.

Yes, the original file was actually just a Google document on which the four of us had, in tandem chain-poetry style, typed out our single-spaced ideas using only Times New Roman 12pt font. It was about 16-20 pages long. We did it this way because Slack had too many bells and whistles.

So I 100% totally get why she was taking all of that information and putting it into a more viable format. What I didn't appreciate was her taking 25 goddamm minutes to EXPLAIN this whole situation to us after she had already made her point in the first 30 seconds and I was just exhausted and hungry after that.

pplains, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:27 (six years ago)

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Friday, 4 January 2019 12:17 (six years ago)

i probably shouldn't be posting in this thread but since nobody's made it explicit that non-binary people are not allowed...

working in a woman-centered environment has definitely given me a deeper appreciation for that relational style and i would be happy were it to become the default relational style.

manspreading is absolutely not biologically necessary and anybody who claims such sounds utterly unconvincing and ridiculous.

errang (rushomancy), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:17 (six years ago)

Here’s a controp. Whether it’s “manspreading”or “mansplaining,” something in me always bristles against demands to “take up less space,” which was a term in my grad program people liked using. I am interested in others and always try to listen to others—my life can only be enriched by that, I feel—but for the time I am alive I am not going to actively work to make myself “smaller” in the world, I’m sorry. (Taking it as a given that “manspreading” isn’t really about taking up space on a train but is supposed to be a metaphor.)

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:28 (six years ago)

I “get” that you shouldn’t be talking over people and being dismissive of others but I feel like there were already words for that. I’ve read the Solnit essay and I think the way she refers to mansplaining is more specific and gendered than the loose way I’ve heard it used out and around.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:31 (six years ago)

Also, full clarification, none of this really bothers me, obviously, or else I wouldn’t hang around the people I do.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:33 (six years ago)

yeah i'll defend that. to me manspreading is about male "self-expression" in a way that diminishes the ability of non-male forms of expression to exist. i get not liking being told to "take up less space" - i try to frame it as "am i making enough room for others to comfortably be part of this space?". and often, the answer is no, because men aren't socialized to take other people's needs into account.

errang (rushomancy), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:35 (six years ago)

Also anyone should post here I don’t really think a men’s only thread is a good idea

Turning the irony switch off for a sec, if you're like me, it may be that in spite of your maleness, you're the kind of person who has *already* gone through life trying too hard not to take up space, so you feel a bit unfairly diminished by the suggestion.

I think that’s it man alive. As a teenager I spoke in a fast and quiet monotone to try to rush through the things I had to say. I had to learn to not feel like I’m wasting people’s time when I speak. Might have gone too far in the other direction since then but still I never feel like being confident in social situations is a step toward “dominating” others or squeezing them out. To the contrary, being more “presentl in the room puts people at ease.

errang (rushomancy), Saturday, 5 January 2019 00:55 (six years ago)

@ Treeship and man alive, I think the goal is to hear the criticism and not feel diminished. I was very brutally tossed into a fire on a Facebook discussion about six years ago by a friend for 'taking up too much space' and felt extremely hurt by not only the content of the criticism, but the delivery. In a conversation with a white female activist friend subsequently, who does immense amounts of work for indigenous rights, I asked her, "in your life, how often are you told to make space by dint of your whiteness in the conversation?" She told me an opinion of hers was shot down as "colonizer thinking" every couple weeks or so, and that she had learned to get used to it. What I mean is, the more engaged you are, the more criticism you may face, and so it's a part of being a better ally, I guess

um, if the heat leakage is def traceable to the gaskets sealing the door, then replacing them seems like the obviously indicated solution, especially if one seems loose to your (untrained) perceptions. I, too, have no idea how this ought to be accomplished, but seeking expert advice, assistance or direct employment strikes me as a sensible move.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 5 January 2019 03:39 (six years ago)

First question might!

pplains, Saturday, 5 January 2019 03:40 (six years ago)

1. Find the model number for the appliance (on the door or on the back).

2. Open a web browser (there are several, widely available).

3. Type the model number into the search bar of your preferred search engine. Among the first results should be: aftermarket replacement parts.

4. If there are user-replaceable gaskets, buy them and try that. The hinge itself as well. And it will likely come with precisely the right mounting hardware, eliminating guesswork on that front.

Personally I don't like the idea of just adding washers willy-nilly and hoping for the best.

i think it's ok to feel hurt and diminished when someone says something like that, _especially_ when that person is making a general (posb overgeneral) complaint and isn't addressing something specific you've done. it's pretty easy for me to personalize a general criticism; i just try to realize that this is what i'm doing so i don't wind up going #notallmen about it.

- "Well..."

- "What's his make and model? They might not even make washers for that brand anymore."

- "Did you turn off all power to the house first? Unless you're a licensed professional...."

I changed the brake pads on my car with my dad over Xmas break. Turned out one of the calipers was bad so we had to replace one of those too.

Wasn’t as satisfying an experience as I wanted it to be tbh. Glad to have the time with dad, but man I’m paying for all car work from now on.

Unfortunate timing with that post.

I've recently learned that replacing a light switch is actually (a.) incredibly easy and (b.) incredibly dangerous!

pplains, Sunday, 6 January 2019 04:23 (six years ago)

I've got this idea of setting up a home-repair YouTube channel with bad tim-and-eric graphic titles from iMovie, lots of holding the phone camera with the left hand while loosening bolts with the right hand, etc. The novelty would be along the lines of the unreliable narrator not knowing what the hell he's doing.

But not in an obvious way, like putting the red clamp on the black tab and the black clamp on the red tab. More like "okay, this washer hasn't been draining properly. First, before we begin, we're going to turn off the power and empty the tub here with this plastic pitcher" ... (one hour later...)

I've also always noticed some weird passive-aggressive vibes from Dads talking to their off-screen child holding the cellphone. "Are you pointing it over here? Can you see the nut and bolt? Is it in focus? QUIT SHAKING IT," but I don't know how to make that funny.

I do know the best advice comes from upper Midwesterners, the most patronizing from the Southerners, and the funniest are those old New York guys who use camera "tricks" like recording the breaker box, stopping the camera, stepping into the frame, and then start recording again, so that they pop magically into the picture.

I totally know what you’re going for here - sounds kind of like these photoshop tutorials this guy used to do but I am far too lazy and loaded with cough syrup to go a looking for them right now

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 6 January 2019 05:22 (six years ago)

xp u can just record continuously + cut out the part where u walk into frame!

hey fellas

appreciate that someone noticed this thread is stupidly titled to ensure that things don't get po-faced, this is partly the raison d'etre of COGH

riposte malone (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 09:00 (six years ago)

ito this oven door

the rubber seal is probably weak

there ought to be *some* air flow out the door, but not as much as is occurring

as noted the hinges may have been weakened during previous operations

inner seal also appears to be slipping

can i get thoughts on following:

washers placed strategically within hinge to tighten closing angle

two new seals, outer and inner (no idea how these are affixed)

new hinges

mix or all of the above

happy to report that removal of door (theres a knack to this) and simple taking apart, resettling hinges and seals and reconstruction and rehanging (theres a knack to this) has the door as tight and right as a fella could wish

i was somewhat forced into action by coming home to the smell (but not other part) of gingerbread three times this week due to inconsistent bake

feminine wiles imo
