For Gallagher, the driving force behind the band Oasis during the 1990s, the literary industry is bound up with issues of class, arguing that "people who write and read and review books are fucking putting themselves a tiny little bit above the rest of us who fucking make records and write pathetic little songs for a living."
According to the Bookseller's Cathy Retzenbrink, Gallagher has identified an "incredibly serious point".
"He's saying what loads of people in this country think, but don't normally have a platform to say," Retzenbrink added. "There are vast amounts of people who feel this way, who do feel that people who are comfortable with words look down on them."

The Chillis
Jens Ehm - Gitarren, Leadstimme –

Spider Murphy Gang (All-Star-Band),
Infrarot (early 80's), Flex Machine,
KEINE AHNUNG, Müller, Maier, Schmitt zu Gange.
The Chillis werden Sie begeistern – „Accoustic & Live“
Von „O“ wie Oldies & Ohrwurm über aktuelle Chart-Hits, bis hin zu„E“ wie Eigenkompositionen.

want to return to this question. didn't have an answer back then but have recently discovered bourbon and it's been a revelation. favorite so far is maker's but i suspect that's a novice answer.
― Treeship, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 23:43 (eleven years ago)
if you let that worry you at the start you'll never graduate from novice ime.
I f/w sweeter pot stills and single malts, I can recommend peatier stuff I've tried but that's nakh's range tbh. never could stick yr American ryes or w/e but I have enjoyed bourbons, fave is prob- no snob nor expert here- jack daniels single barrel.
go-to and memorables- glenfiddich 12, Yamazaki 12, green spot, redbreast single pot, bushmills 16, glenmorangie 10 (I think) Glenlivet 12
tonight I'm drinking tesco finest reserve from a fuckin big glass and there's nothing at all wrong with it
favourite...for example of Irish prob redbreast. scotch Glenfiddich 12. no categories straight up pick one, tonight yamazaki
― local eire man (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 23:58 (eleven years ago)
i always thought it was strange that, given my family's irish heritage, we have gravitated more toward scotch than irish whiskey. i can't ever remember my grandfather drinking jameson's or bushmill's. scotch seems harsher and less accessible to me than bourbon, but i think i will give it a shot again soon.
i feel a pleasant buzz right now from two glasses of bourbon while doing my reading for class tomorrow. only downside is that i've been kind of unrestrained in my facebook messaging but i think this has been positive and ultimately what i am doing is solidifying friendships.

― the final twilight of all evaluative standpoints (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 23:13 (eleven years ago)
hmmm
could go literal or alliteral
trísiop would suffice for latter but would mean v little I'm afraid
crannlong is basic string two together translation but rly I'm guessing you'd have to make it longcrainn or maybe crann an loinge or some such
there is a word or two a little more decorative that may or may not apply depending on the lad himselfs self-definition of the name I spose crannúil is a good descriptor and a good word to intone and would translate as treeish if one were so inclined or w/e (arboreal? you prob know)
there's doubtless words specifically for timbers and such if one chased this root to a nautical conclusion but then I guess in order to so work it would need to function on the ship and work back giving....idk.
quick search sez crannàil are masts he may have to be satisfied with that as a good metaphor and half translation.

nách tí bhean? almost translates to "is there a woman of the house?" which is a good portentous type of intro to something i think, i mean it's def a bit garbled and simplified but imagine brendan fraser playing connemara man (encino man in the US rly?) and it prob works

ACE is a v amusing account of "the modern Irish writers" by the American Hugh Kenner, here is an early tidbit:
The Irish story is more complicated. Plenty of the reading matter and acting matter they produce seems intended for natives alone, but Irish writers have always been naggingly aware that Irishmen do not as a rule buy books, have never bought them, have even inherited a tradition whereby to write when you might be talking is an unnatural act. Books in England are sacred objects, exempt from the 10-percent Value Added Tax: not (until 1 April 1982) in Ireland.

consider your last tilting against landfills episode in the c_____n thread -- you suggest that both you and your interlocutors /really/ know what you are talking about, when it isn't clear that you do, and even if you did then they probably woudn't

― prole, you'll be a yeoman soon (wins), Sunday, 15 March 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)
lol at landfills
I fear I'm exactly the rube suggested but in knowing it may have a possible advantage at times. I'm a culchie before all else, without any element of expertise beyond purely functional education in the liberal or classical or what have you spheres highly valued on ilx. seeing as imo there's no accounting for different experiences/education/knowledge otherwise attained so better not to assume it imo.
wider point than discussing just myself obv there's ppl with degrees and private schooling and experience on things I like to discuss and as soon as I disagree with them they're wrong.
― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 March 2015 17:16 (ten years ago)
MRA, like I reject this utterly obv but fair enough shorthand distaste but its actually one of the things that irks. discussion on ilx on such issues is p much 100% a race to label ppl as in the tent or not, and the results are eh imo they're shit but I'm not getting an online degree on bell hooks to get in the tent to say so.

DM, I was just in a pub (in London, natch) watching the Celtic v Dundee Utd, Scottish League Cup Final. The loudest, most fanatical, most irrational Celtic fan there was an Irishman. A Dundee Utd player, Sean Dillon, was sent off at which point the Irishman sprang up and exclaimed, "Fuck off Dillon, fuck off back to Dublin, you dorty Jackeen bastard!" and let loose a series of imprecations based on Dillon's apparent provenance as a Dubliner.... then spent the rest of the game apologizing to the couple sitting behind him, who were from Dublin. Anyway, this was the first time I'd ever heard this word, Jackeen. Worth mentioning that one of the co-owners of this extremely dodgy pub is an extremely dodgy Dubliner, whose frankly psychotic brother often works behind the bar but, thankfully for the Irishman, not this afternoon. Also that the Irishman heaped abuse on Dundee Utd, abuse based on their fairly obscure nickname of the Arabs as if they actually were Arabs.

this is just you being at the wrong end of two confidence tricks, the american liberal arts education that gives its professional classes a patina of familiarity with great works and their discontents, and the english private school thing, which is less about learning than inculcating separateness and social grace
so you imagine the posters you dislike from both of those two demographics to have an advantage over you, and it is your suspicion rather than anything concrete that does the trick, and in doing so you fall into self-pity rather than fighting with your wits
nevermind that a postgraduate computer science degree is risibly demeaned as a 'functional education', there is nothing other than functional education, thankfully yours allows you to become a civil servant rather to add filigree to whatever phatic opinions about this or that you are enjoined to express this week

I’m as cuddly and soft as it gets. I dont know where I get a rep otherwise tbh
you are! :) it’s not that i didn’t expect you to be kind; but you’re especially kind & i was grateful for that. (also nakh and mordy were kind, when i made my first drunk political posts on ilx, and next day feared i’d made a horrible faux pas.)
also the hard to understand thing baffles me but maybe its the accent
twas not meant as criticism. mostly just mean i’m a clueless yank and follow yall’s conversation over yonder which is often obscure to me but v interesting (though sportstalk is totally impenetrable). so yes, it’s the accent.
you do make gnomic utterances but i like them (and when i get them, find more often as not they hit target)
you strike me as extremely intelligent & astute yet often self-deprecatingly dissimulate this— charming & good a posting style as any (better than many); but admittedly sometimes i’d like to hear more of your thoughts(again not a criticism but a compliment)
seconding nakh, some of the dummest people i’ve ever met were overeducated in (what passes for) liberal arts these days (include myself in this class of the badly educated)
anyway, hi back from the other side of the atlantic

Generally refers to the act of leaping onto another player's back or shoulders to take a high mark, usually in a contested situation.[30]Spell, to have a to be interchanged off the ground.Spillage occurs when a ball comes off the top of a pack of players attempting to mark a ball.Spoil a punch or slap of the ball which hinders an opposition player from taking a mark.Stab pass a kick that travels very low to the ground to a teammate. Until the 1970s this was usually a drop kick.Stacks on the mill a stand-alone statement made by commentators to indicate that the ball is covered by a large pack of players on the ground and is unable to move.Stepladder colloquially, the player upon whose shoulders another player jumps to take a specky.Substitute an interchange player who cannot be freely interchanged, but may be brought onto the ground to replace a player for the rest of a game.Supergoal a goal which scores nine points instead of six, earned by kicking a goal from beyond a set distance, usually 50m in AFL pre-season competitions. Seen only in practice and exhibition games.Suspended the state of a player who has been refused permission to play by a legislated tribunal. See reported.`[3]Sweeper a player who plays loose across the half-back line in order to act as a link between the backline and midfield.[16]Switch to move the ball laterally across the ground, hoping to find an easier path to the forward-line.TEdit
Tackle the grabbing of an opposition player in possession of the ball, in order to impede his progress or to force him to dispose of the ball quickly.[6]Tagger a defensive player whose task is to prevent an opposition midfielder from having an impact on the game.Tap see hitout.Tapout see hitout.Term colloquialism for quarter.[13]Thin side an imaginary area of the ground that indicates the least space occupied by the greatest number of players. See fat side.Third man up (or simply third man) a player other than the nominal ruckman who unexpectedly enters a ruck contest to effect a hitout. Rules prevent third men at the centre bounce, but permit them at all other ball-ups.Three-quarter-time the break between the third and fourth quarters.Throw an illegal disposal of a ball by hand. Will result in a free kick to the opposition.Throw-in see boundary throw-in.Time-on time added onto the end of each quarter to compensate for time lost during general play by stoppages. The amount of time to be added on is determined by independent time-keepers who stop the game clock when indicated by the central umpires. Lower grade and lower age-group competitions will often be played without time-on.[3]Torpedo (colloq. screwie, torp or barrel) a punt kick that rotates the ball around its long axis, which is aligned with the direction the ball is travelling. Regarded as the type of kick with the longest distance, but the lowest chance of being accurate.[31]Total Football a tactic where less emphasis is placed on set positions and structures. Apart from 2 (or 3) key defenders and forwards, all players play 'through the middle'. It was perfected by Mick Malthouse during his later years at Collingwood and thought to have its origins in Association Football's Total Football, a style pioneered by the Dutch national team in the 1970s.[32]Touch colloquialism for possession or disposal.Touched indicates that a ball was touched by another player after being kicked; such a kick cannot result in a mark, a goal, or an out of bounds on the full free kick.Trip a low tackle which will result in a free kick to the opposition. Furthermore, tripping or attempting to trip an opponent with the foot or leg will lead to a player being reported.[3]Turnover the loss of possession of the ball to the opposition.Tunnelling bumping an airborne player attempting a mark with the intention of unbalancing them.UEdit

the only instance of that phrase is in the essay about the vlach people of macedonia
These ideal roles plus the physical roles of men and women control their relationship so completely that outside of these roles, "any possibility of a personal relationship... is completely excluded."[16] It is also central to the woman's role, for complex reasons which make sense within the framework of Greek culture, that she is obliged to remain in the house, in fact, "she is the house... a woman's absence from the house is contrary to her role."[17]

So we come to Lady Gregory. [...] it was she who contrived and imposed an "Anglo-Irish" anybody with half an ear could imitate. For decades it was the idiom of stock plays at the Abbey, where the irreverent gave marks for "PQ" (Peasant Quality). It is as formulaic as pseudo-Yiddish and any funny man can still drop into it.
[...]Open Cuchulain of Muirthemne at random: "'I swear by the oath of my people,' said Cuchulain, 'I will make my doings be spoken of among the great doings of heroes in their strength.'"
"My deeds will be remembered," that is, "with the great deeds heroes performed when they were in their prime"; but we have here an idiom which habitually prefers the verb-like form--doings for deeds, the immediate form--spoken of for remembered, and the concrete form--strength for prime.
We have also a syntactical mannerism which we may notice as early in the book as Lady Gregory's explanation of how she shaped her language. "I have told the whole story in plain and simple words, in the same way my old nurse Mary Sheridan used to be telling stories from the Irish long ago, and I a child at Roxborough."
Since Lady Gregory commenced learning Irish only when she was past forty, we are to understand that her old nurse Mary Sheridan used to be talking to her in English, an English moreover that has been strained and stressed by Irish habits of thought. "And I a child at Roxborough" is a symptom, and the way it differs from "When I was a child" merits pondering, with a valuable exposition by Maire Cruise O'Brien to guide us. We shall find that the English sense of things works from verb to verb like Latin, and arranges verbs in systems of subordination, chronological or causal. "She told me that when I was a child" is a normal English sentence, the "was" clause subordinated to the "told" clause. But Irish centers on states, represented by nouns and noun-like constructions. "She used to be telling me" recreates her telling as a stable, ongoing process, she telling and telling, in a vivid pocket of time, something to picture; "I a child" locates my condition as that telling proceeded; the "and" does no more than link these, the child put into the picture with the storyteller.
[...]Mrs O'Brien states the principle a little more technically:
Irish syntax concentrates on the expression of states rather than actions; its verbal system is highly aspective, with the subject of the sentence as the focus of the utterance and all occurrences relating back thereto. It shows a marked predilection for the substantival cast of sentence, ie, a sentence where the noun carries the main burden of content. It has a highly developed prepositional system widely employed; prepositions in Irish supply many of the functions of the verb in English.
When these Irish habits are strong, as in the speech of first-generation bilinguals, they produce such violations of idiom as "If it is a thing that he do come." This means "If he should come," and the word "thing" is trying to anchor it to the aspective. But under pressure from English idiom more accurately sensed that kind of pidgin tends to vanish, "and only Gaelicisms inherently amenable to the recipient structure are retained in the mono-lingual Anglo-Irish." So an English comes to be spoken that has nothing grammatically wrong with it but with still something strange about it, a strangeness frequently obtained by the Irish habit of concentrating on states but supplementing the feeble English verb "to be" with verbs like "put," "leave," "have," which are used to indicate how a state of things has been effected: "She has him crying" (She has made him cry); "I put the fear of God on him" (I frightened him severely); "Have it off him" (take it from him).
― piqued (wins), Sunday, 19 April 2015 22:54 (ten years ago)
regarding this slab of irishsplaining:
i. does this seem correct to you or is it bs?ii. if it is correct and not bs, to what extent do you think these apparent "irish" modes of speech have diffused into non-irish english in general?
― piqued (wins), Sunday, 19 April 2015 22:58 (ten years ago)
oh wow that's great
it is imo ime utterly correct. hearkening back to the island, where I have the benefit of conversation with genuine bilinguals, the usage of an Irish grammar as described is unquestionable, and I can lapse into it as easily as changing gear.
lady gregory et al get a frequent dose of lampooning from Flann O'Brien across various works for, eh let's call it a well-meaning overusage of such idiom, especially as pushed on the abbey for years, so it isnt a new discovery.
― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 April 2015 23:22 (ten years ago)
I dont know of it spreading except as pastiche tbrr but others may have other views
― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 April 2015 23:23 (ten years ago)
it may also be noted that others might advise on the extent to which the cultural nationalism movement rebuilt/revised an gaeilge themselves, maybe not at all as spoken in the rural areas or maybe with some influence, this then to exert its own influence on anglo-irish patterns as described.. I may be misremembering/attributing the extent to which the language had died out or was homogenised from a central source during this process.
― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 April 2015 23:27 (ten years ago)
Then there is the custom of beginning each sentence, straight off, with a verb, being it only a sort of "'Tis." "Went we to Galway yesterday" would be a paradigm, and "It's we went to Galway yesterday," "It's yesterday we went to Galway," "It's to Galway we went yesterday," would be various alterations of emphasis, with "is"--Irish "is"-- for that inelustable head-verb; hence Synge's "It's cold he is surely," or "It's soon he'd be falling asleep." What's done with syntax needn't be done with voice, and the Irish voice accordingly is free to play its equable tune, under no responsibility for assigning emphasis.
― piqued (wins), Sunday, 19 April 2015 23:31 (ten years ago)
the reason I asked about diffusion into non irish english is that none of those three egs "She has him crying" (She has made him cry); "I put the fear of God on him" (I frightened him severely); "Have it off him" (take it from him). seem that uncommon from where I'm sitting, granted I did grow up around glaswegians but
― piqued (wins), Sunday, 19 April 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)
well you'd have to allow "Gaelic" to stand for "irish" and then there's no question at all of it being the same influence
"O'Nolan's journalistic pseudonym is taken from a character (Myles-na-Coppaleen) in Dion Boucicault's play The Colleen Bawn, who is the stereotypical charming Irish rogue. At one point in the play, he sings the ancient anthem of the Irish Brigades on the Continent, the song "An Crúiscín Lán" (hence the name of the column in the Irish Times).
Capall is the Irish word for "horse" (from Vulgar Latin caballus), and 'een' (spelled ín in Irish) is a diminutive suffix. The prefix na gCapaillín is the genitive plural in his Ulster Irish dialect (the Standard Irish would be "Myles na gCapaillíní"), so Myles na gCopaleen means "Myles of the Little Horses". Capaillín is also the Irish word for "pony", as in the name of Ireland's most famous and ancient native horse breed, the Connemara pony.
O'Nolan himself always insisted on the translation "Myles of the Ponies", saying that he did not see why the principality of the pony should be subjugated to the imperialism of the horse."

darraghmac - elderly irish poster who registers for ILF in february 2053. initially hamstrung by his haphazard vietnamese and total ignorance of the subject of fabergé eggs, darraghmac is cautiously indulged despite his coarse and prejudicial views towards silicon based lifeforms. while insisting that he has never had any interest in or knowledge of fabergé eggs, he tells yarns about a mythical predecessor of ILF where snarky english people argued about the merits of soccerball players and provided an early platform for experimental novelist and 2034 ordre des artes et des lettres inductee phil mcnulty.

Dublin has witnessed several gangland feuds over the past decade since the murder of Eamonn 'The Don' Dunne who is believed to have been responsible for the murder of his close friend Martin 'Marlo' Hyland
Kavanagh's father was Gerard 'Hatchet' Kavanagh, who was lured to his death in Spain in September 2014.
It is understood several members of a criminal gang linked to Dublin criminal 'Fat' Freddie Thompson were in the hotel watching the weigh-in when the gunmen opened fire.

knew that wins had posted relevant stuff somewhere
mcdonaghs irish dialogue has clearly been influenced overmuch by a study of the likes of this, and surely the likes of the stuff put on at the abbey early doors, but rly it was wrong, all wrong, and to write it in the nineties or whatever and lazily wave a hand at synge or whoever from 1920 is just not acceptable.
firstly, i could read synge in my down-home dialect and im pretty sure that while it would seem old-fashioned, it would nevertheless come clean enough out. from ascendancy stock, his time in aran (or his ear) seems to have served him better than whatever mcdonagh has picked up from having a lettermullen father.
im willing to allow a set of rotten vocal performances, tho twould seem a bit much of a coincidence that the gang entire playing islanders didnt know a kerry accent from a connemara- the lads playin nordies were ok, like. the lad from the young offenders was by some distance better than the other three lead islanders.
its a funny balance, theres many good reasons a fella doesnt want to go too sharply in on diaspora or their writing/depiction of jreland, but dammit the play was set in 1993 and between speaking an idiom that at kindest interpretation might have flown fifty years earlier in a very different region and having an o'casey lite grasp of/care for anything like a reasonable characterisation of the people and throwing in a quiet man level of ra (well inla but) men ive to say.....its bad stuff, insulting stuff, and ive no idea of its path from draft to fame but this tick paddy wouldve handed it back to him and told him to write english characters and nkt spoof irish ones.
telling perhaps that twas the RSC put it on first, idk? and that it did well in the states.
at least im happy to be able to report that his clumsy scattergun satire (its not satire its an inability to accurately nail) from three billboards is only him doing to murrica what he done to us first

special word for yerman from bachelors walk. gaeltacht english is imo a complex, precise, dry, expressive idiom and this guy to my mind played it for laughs out of ignorance or contempt.
he simply didnt say the stuff right, had no interest in saying it right. hee-hawing his way through lines for laughs in an accent nobody has ever heard outside of the gaiety and one that a bare minimum of effort, interest or talent wouldve informed him or anyone responsible was ridiculous.
twat.

Which one from Bachelors Walk? Wycherley?I absolutely loved Bachelors Walk but it is very much A Product Of Its Time and idk if I would today so I havent rewatched.Feel diaspora, esp those who spent a lot of holidays in Ireland as a child, are uncomfortably trapped - no doubt McDonagh got it from both sides and therefore a lot of his tin ear stems from overcompensating? And he is Irish - he is undoubtedly one of those people who’d have been born and raised in Ireland if not for economic migration. Don’t know if this would have made him quite the same writer though. I wonder also about if there was the thing you see (lol how articulate I am) where emigrants are sort of frozen in time after leaving and miss out on the nuances and developments you wouldn’t if you were still living there. I might be projecting because I sometimes feel this way, though.

heh ty ums and rb@u but i really only took half-notice of what thread that crucial wins post was in when i bumped at 5am
gyac, absolutely i get the trap that an irish person abroad- i think anyone away, really, even me in dublin to a certain extent- can fall into without any blame attached of having a postcard relationship with place. experiencing it through parents and doing the summers back home, more so again, sure.
ive cousins in what i would think are a very similar type relationship, london to irish parents and its v clichéd how and where the stuff sticks, the importance to them of ritual and cultural points that....fell away from cousins this side as we lived through change. very understandable stuff.
but all that said, that this is a version of irish that seems acceptable- and look i guess we all have our sore points, this must be one of mine- to write and put on and tour around the world and slap "mid nineties western ireland" on it is something i take a strong allergy to tbh.
its cod ireland and whether the fault is in mcdonagh as a writer (frankly i suspect so) or whether this is a representation of ireland hed be happy to sit and talk to a journalist in nyc and insist is his truth is somewhat imo beside the point, rly
friel was writing a more modern rural ireland in the early 60s, like.
sure, mcdonagh is writing broad strokes, but my objection to the level of apery goes beyond "arah its doesnt have to be a documentary".
im overanalysing it, surely, but the question of why this, of anything, is what went superstar from the irish writing scene in the past two decades is one that goes beyond "he can write a decent quip" imo
― BSC Joan Baez (darraghmac), Friday, 6 March 2020 09:47 (five years ago)
I’m not disagreeing with you, I just understand where he’s coming from I guess. You see this to a much greater extent with Irish-Americans and the way they cling to things like corned beef and Irish dancing and stuff that died out in the late 19th century. Literally. (Why they insist on clinging to St Patty’s is another thing entirely). You read old Flann and he was bang otm now, today, probably tomorrow. I mean, the “plain people of Ireland” still cuts! and even that is so beyond McDonagh. I do think he writes well though, when you strip this shite away? The issue is that there’s so much of it.Anyway, Cruiskeen Lawn though! None of this sounds like anyone itt, ofc.
A LADY lecturing recently on the Irish language drew attention to the fact (I mentioned it myself as long ago as 1925) that, while the average English speaker gets along with a mere 400 words, the Irish-speaking peasant uses 4,000.Considering what most English speakers can achieve with their tiny fund of noises, it is a nice speculation to what extremity one would be reduced if one were locked up for a day with an Irish-speaking bore and bereft of all means of committing murder or suicide. My point, however, is this. The 400/4,000 ration is fallacious; 400/400,000 would be more like it. There is scarcely a single word in the Irish (barring, possibly, Sasanach) that is simple and explicit.Apart from words with endless shades of cognate meaning, there are many with so complete a spectrum of graduated ambiguity that each of them can be made to express two directly contrary meanings, as well as a plethora of intermediate concepts that have no bearing on either...But what is the use? One could go on and on without reaching anywhere in particular.Your paltry English speaker apprehends sea-going craft through the infantile cognition which merely distinguishes the small from the big.If it’s small, it’s a boat, and if it’s big it’s a ship. In his great book An tOileánach, however, the uneducated Tomás Ó Criomhthain uses, perhaps, a dozen words to convey the concept of carrying super-marinity – árthrach long, soitheach, bád, naomhóg, bád raice, galbhád, púcán and whatever you are having yourself. The plight of the English speaker with his wretched box of 400 vocal beads may be imagined when I say that a really good Irish speaker would blurt out the whole 400 in one cosmic grunt. In Donegal there are native speakers who know so many million words that it is a matter of pride with them never to use the same word twice in a life-time. Their life (not to say their language) becomes very complex at the century mark; but there you are..
― median punt (gyac), Friday, 6 March 2020 10:05 (five years ago)
i think nakh pbuh may have posted some very interesting stuff in the middle of some long forgotten thread about how and where irish-scotch culture in particular- actually iirc its in particular-particular ulster-schotchtch- travelled in packets and stuck in their new places with specifically traceable cultural touchstones but sprung thence as a new genus in its own new conditions, and i think thats what we're saying here
amerikay tends, at least imo, to veer btwn quiet man and sayyyyy roddy doyle
i think that-if i think of them as the kilburn irish i hope that doesnt come across as having any negative connotations, these are my people- the kilburn irish have a very definite idea of rural ireland that-
will we say mcgahern? we will, maybe-
strikes me, when i mix with them as i do in their own place (london irish is a fascinating culture to me) or as they return to my place as tantalisingly close to quantifiable, tho im sure wed have a fine row in nailing down the characteristics.
and beyant all that, i would still say that mcdonaghs innismore is worthy of a flann to tear it to pieces
right, breakfast
