of the non-photographers writing about photography, i really like geoff dyer's "the ongoing moment". he takes some intriguing thematic approaches, like looking how different photographers have taken images of blind people.

Seems to be more about Photography theory. Michael Fried recently published something which is getting a lot of attention, but I kinda hate Fried so I can't recommend, even though I haven't read it. I think its called something like: why photography matters now more than ever. On Photography is really beautiful, that opening part about the suitcase full of photographs is one of my favourite snippets of writing ever.

Oh no, whatever type of books, but only related to photography.
I also discovered I have a Nan Goldin book. Didn't even realize I had it.

In that case Steven Shore - American Surfaces, Wolfgang Tillmans - Truth Study Centre, Bernd & Hilla Becher - Water Towers, the phaidon book on Uta Barth
Cozen is probably your best bet on this btw

Also, Vitamin PH is a really good overview of contemporary photography by young and/or recently established/emerging artists.

Just finished, at about the same time, On Photography and Szarkowski's Looking at Photographs. Very interesting to read the two against each other; both very playful, one written with somewhat of a darker bent and distrust about the whole enterprise, the other more openly laudatory (but also with a deep sense of distrust).
Looking for recommendations on color photographers; only know Shore, Eggleston, a smattering of others. What's good?
Currently making my way through Roy DeCarava: A Retrospective and Helen Levitt's (RIP) Crosstown.
