Most of the shirts on this thread that people seem inordinately proud of look pretty horrible, tbh.

I don't want any football shirts. I own three Man Utd ones, one of which is 11 years old (and was only bought because the black-collared 1994 one got boiled to death in The Great Broken Washing Machine Disaster of 2000) and the other two of which were given to me as presents by my brother who I haven't had the heart to tell I never wear football shirts unless I'm actually playing football. And I almost never play football nowadays.
However, I've been meaning to start a thread for some time about football kits, so maybe I should hijack this one with my ramblings.

See, my feelings about a lot of clubs are based on their kits. First of all, I feel that there are too many teams in England with blue shirt-white shorts-blue socks or red shirt-white shorts-red socks combinations. Red-white-red seems a bit insipid compared to red-white-black (and I hate it when United wear white socks). I like to see teams with colours that break out of this pattern, so I'm glad to see Norwich coming up, happy to see Wolves stick around, and disappointed to see Blackpool go down, but couldn't give a fuck about Birmingham. There's probably no logical reason for it, but I feel much more favourably disposed towards Crystal Palace than Charlton.

(xp) Secondly, I hate hoops, they remind me of rugby tops (which is A Bad Thing), so I can't get into QPR. Also, I don't like stripes if half the stripes are white. So Newcastle, Wigan, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday can fuck off. Stoke, Sunderland, Southampton and Sheffield United are excused because of the red-white-black thing (unless they don't actually have any black, I might be wrongly assuming they all wear the same colours). But if the stripes are black plus a colour, that's A Good Thing. So Inter and Milan are both OK. Do any English clubs have a kit like this?

Reading are hoops actually, aren't they?

Ugh that fabric. I can envisage it sliding off a slightly-misaligned shelf under its own weight.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link
There was definitely a black-and-yellow stripey team, which is the worst combo imaginable. I'm wanting to say Newport County?
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link
Roma score plus points for the pleasingly unusual combo of reddish-maroon with goldeny-yellow.

Actually, isn't it also Hull some years?
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link
Wait, aren't Wednesday blue-white-black and therefore a good thing? Or is that rule only yet more shameful pro-Utd bias?
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link
Wednesday's kit is certainly less displeasing than QPR's - I can't be sure if it's the shorts or the hoops/stripes thing, though.

i think it might actually be the first football top i owned. i used to like aberdeen, despite never having been there or having any connection in any way with the city and them also being shite. perhaps i was transfigured by jim leighton's vaseline covered eyebrows. then i started going to celtic games and the rest was history.

that is a fine kit imo, umbro were on top form in those days. v natty home too (lazio had the same in blue):

i am, to a certain extent, with nbs. however my shirt nazi policies are different. any team who plays in red and white who aren't the arsenal can gtfo, as well as any team in white because spurs. blue has to be italy blue to work, it is rare anyone else pulls it off although france do well once every other kit. i like stripes tbh but loops can usually gtfo. check designs are usually awesome, although that chelsea one is carrying on a chelsea away kit disaster trend. if you put any shit on your shirt to try and change with tradition, it better be something fucking awesome because usually it looks like piss or shit stains a retarded child has used to decorate your stripe. if it is luminous, you are the fucking worst. stripes have to be chunky and full (wtf barca) unless you are udinese who can get away with looking like actual barcodes on account of not wanting to look like juve. 2 sponsers at most and if you try to hide them, hell i don't care how bad your kit is, i'll kind of respect you. i'm a sucker for the diagonal sash type kit. i'm a sucker for the one or two stripes down the side type kit, although they haven't really been seen since the nineties (except on lyon shirts.) if your shirt is green, your shirt is the worst.
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link
of course all those rules can be broken, but you'd have to be wearing a fucking awesome shirt to do so.

Yeah, these are both good. Also, I've decided there aren't enough purple kits out there (like Fiorentina). A purple and black striped kit would be good.

Also lightning type effects - usually well done imo (look at Juve's away kit last year iirc).
I also like when kits try to make the middle of a kit look interesting or use their badge somehow and oft combine these things - look at that recent scotland kit with the large badge fading into the background or the turkey, i think, kit where they used their badge like the sponser.
