feeling a leicester-style hull upset

nxd, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:33 (eight years ago) link

either that or not winning a game, just as long as they bring the ip into disrepute

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:42 (eight years ago) link

yes not winning a game despite tom huddlestone breaking jamie vardys 11 game scoring run seems more fitting

nxd, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:51 (eight years ago) link

I was going to start a 'Which parachuted-in mega-manager will finish lowest?' poll but this'll do. Guessing Mourinho even now but we can but dream.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:53 (eight years ago) link

mike phelan for mega-manager

nxd, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:54 (eight years ago) link

That Leicester money is on Watford this time by the way. Mazzarri's got an excellent Alec Baldwin thing going on so I'm expecting him to go full Glengarry on them at some point.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:58 (eight years ago) link

Surely this is Arsene's year

to come fifth

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:15 (eight years ago) link

Pep ftw

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:16 (eight years ago) link

do we have a new thread yet? i suggest "phelan on dis ting"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:17 (eight years ago) link

it's a title which borrows from the present to link us to our past

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:18 (eight years ago) link

Not phelan that ttitle tbh.

Horizontal Superman is invulnerable (aldo), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:19 (eight years ago) link

I don't want to think of that disgusting little troll ever time I click on the thread though.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:20 (eight years ago) link

Phelan on your booty

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:25 (eight years ago) link

Dammit I cd've display named that

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:25 (eight years ago) link

I think I already had that.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:30 (eight years ago) link

But I would support a revive.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:30 (eight years ago) link

probably best i can't seem to find a picture of him doing his sharon stone impression on the man united bench

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:31 (eight years ago) link

Someone must have said something suitably stupid and/or hubristic in the last few weeks?

the truth is most of the titles become annoying or at best symbolic of the pain associated with the passing season and the inevitable death of august's hope

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 11:36 (eight years ago) link

Voted Chelsea.

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:01 (eight years ago) link

the dream of pep instilling a potent serenity to city is fading a little, but there's not much rising to replace it. I suppose I hope that liverpool benefit more than chelsea from the lack of games and that utd go a long way in the europa league but I'm mostly just curious to see how this flux resolves itself

ogmor, Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:07 (eight years ago) link

(xp) Fairly meaningless, I always think (fear) Chelsea are going to win the League... and everything else.

cheatin hun bastard

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:17 (eight years ago) link

Voted Spurs.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:24 (eight years ago) link

Voted City. Utd's season hinges on the Rooney problem as ever

Number None, Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:27 (eight years ago) link

Top 3 will be city, united and spurs. Hard to say who'll get 4th but its not gonna be Arsenal

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Thursday, 11 August 2016 12:46 (eight years ago) link

'Can Leicester City really win the Premiership 2016-17?'

Yes to that title

A good season for spurs would be cl progress and being in or around qualification again

That said theres a lot more due from son, lamela, njie so maybe, maybe

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:01 (eight years ago) link

We seem pretty desperate to get rid of Njie so probably not.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:13 (eight years ago) link

I think Spurs will profit from the relative peace and continuity. The Pep City and Mou United revolutions will come at a price I think, esp. in their first season. Arsenal will be Arsenalling, Liverpool in all honesty isn't a contender. A top 6 finish for LCFC would be a great accomplishment imho.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:24 (eight years ago) link

Oh, and Chelsea: meh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:24 (eight years ago) link

i think city will win. too many good players.

i do kinda have a strange and terrible epl-centric desire to see pep fail and get sacked by november.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:26 (eight years ago) link

It'd be pretty funny if after all this Leicester just went ahead and repeated exactly the same trick.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:41 (eight years ago) link

funny but not happening. Kanté is a huge loss for a start.

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 13:51 (eight years ago) link

i fancy lpool for top four (with mc mu th). think they will murder some teams just dunno about the consistency. and depending how close 4th is to 1st if everyone else cant get their act together then who knows they might get another shamanic dance ritual going

not enough data on city and chelsea to rly make this a worthwhile thread i know but was curious if anyone felt anything strongly to the contrary. feel same way as lg about city. united look ready to grind. chelsea feel like they will be shit initially but even effective chelsea will be shit so idk. interested to see if conte might go 3-5-2 with cuadrado. arsenal oh dear

yes to phelan on your booty of course

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:13 (eight years ago) link

feel like City have made the best pound-for-pound squad-building signings, feel like Pep has far less external bullshit to worry about than Mou - e.g. NN's point about Rooney, but all the other boardroom backstabbery that comes with the job. but if i had to bet anything that mattered on it i wouldn't want to call it between Utd and City, Mourinho still has all his dark powers imo.

Liverpool and Spurs feels as good a guess as any for 3 and 4

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:24 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I don't really have any idea how Chelsea and (especially) City are going to line up. City will just get there I think, and pretty quickly. Chelsea's more of a case of good players being poorly deployed and Conte might get more out of Oscar or Fabregas but there's just a pissy attitude there and they will still be playing that decrepit back four so I dunno.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:25 (eight years ago) link

Relegation battle could be a humdinger this year though - dunno if Boro are going to click, guessing Hull are pretty much down by Christmas, Swansea's reinforcements look dodgy, Sunderland are still Sunderland. Has Sean Dyches done much of note to improve Burnley in the past 12 months?

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:28 (eight years ago) link

Hull to recover after buyout by Taiwanese investment co.

Burnley probably already good enough to finish above 3 of those no-marks as long as they don't have horrible luck.

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:38 (eight years ago) link

probably weaker without barton (did i rly just type that)

not sure about boro at all. smuggies more like at the moment and i don't particularly see why for another mendes fly tipping job in part

watford are in trouble based on what i saw of us vs them in pre-season, although it's too soon to rule out our just being unplayably brilliant

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:43 (eight years ago) link

just realised if Hull hadn't moved grounds we cd've had Phelan on your Boothferry

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 August 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

city. they've signed the best player in gundogan and pep won't let anyone half arse it like pelligrini did. utd have got derek who's great but i dunno if he's psychologically suited to playing for mou.

pandemic, Thursday, 11 August 2016 16:18 (eight years ago) link

i was automatically about to respond with gundogan's injury record and... it's just one of those mindless lines everyone parrots isnt it. not actually that bad unless the spinal ever comes back

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 18:10 (eight years ago) link

sóc un creient de pep

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 11 August 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

while everyone was delighted with workmanlike turgid drug cheats Leicester City last season I must say the Pep-Mou Mancunian ultra rivalry intrigues me, though I do fear that it may turn out to be a damp squib - in that i could see one of them failing to perform.

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 11 August 2016 18:14 (eight years ago) link

like lg says, most probably find themselves heading the queues to both praise and lol at pep, though you'd obv rather he dismantled jose than vice versa. it's all fun and games until brian kidd gets poked in the eye

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2016 19:02 (eight years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 12 August 2016 00:01 (eight years ago) link

Can anyone tell me why Arsenal are so maligned in this thread? Came second, added one good player so far and might get another couple...

Its been a pretty boring summer as an Arsenal fan while other clubs have spent ridiculous money. They are still the best creative midfield in the league though and if ozil-alexis-cazorla stays fit, will be an absolute force to reckon with.

I don't think we will win it, I'm not sure who I would bet on but to write Arsenal off as a team with no chance of the top 4 (let alone winning it) is crazy.

plums (a hoy hoy), Friday, 12 August 2016 13:08 (eight years ago) link

bought a player you prob don't need, didn't buy the players you do need plus increasingly competitive league. i wouldn't write arsenal off for top 4 but it does feel a p risky season for them.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 12 August 2016 13:13 (eight years ago) link

and last year's second must be your worst points total for a few seasons...

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 12 August 2016 13:15 (eight years ago) link

Arsenal could shit the bed for the entire first half of the season and still qualify for the CL, it's what they do.

Matt DC, Friday, 12 August 2016 15:54 (eight years ago) link

Arsenal have as much chance of dropping out of top four as they do of winning it.

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Friday, 12 August 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

Zero?

Matt DC, Friday, 12 August 2016 19:08 (eight years ago) link

Lets just say the board wont be worried about either

r|t|c, Saturday, 13 August 2016 10:28 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I'm amazed we've gone for such a mixture of blandness and vagueness, it doesn't even relate to an older title, it's basically a Nult thinkpiece headline

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 13 August 2016 10:37 (eight years ago) link

Maybe thats the point

Lets say that was the point

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 August 2016 10:42 (eight years ago) link

except we already m/l did that joke with "get involved"

r|t|c, Saturday, 13 August 2016 10:45 (eight years ago) link

cant even bomb it with r kelly now youtube's borked

r|t|c, Saturday, 13 August 2016 10:50 (eight years ago) link

That was the point. Open to changing it for something that isn't terrible and Phelan related.

Premier League 16/17 Thread

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 13 August 2016 11:40 (eight years ago) link

the anti-Hull prejudice on this board is sickening

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 13 August 2016 11:48 (eight years ago) link

Matt DC, Saturday, 13 August 2016 11:49 (eight years ago) link

lol even their own fans wouldn't go that far

Tom Watson in a fedora (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 13 August 2016 11:50 (eight years ago) link

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 August 2016 12:20 (eight years ago) link

Phelan So Alone

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 13 August 2016 13:02 (eight years ago) link

I'm not sure the case against a Phelo-centric title was made - the prospect of someone being reminded of that horrible troll only serves as more reason to go with one of the many fine Phelan titles.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 13 August 2016 13:04 (eight years ago) link

john phelan

nxd, Saturday, 13 August 2016 13:05 (eight years ago) link

Smthg that clashes the realness of phelan with the current media bugbear of headphone/washbag culture. Although the chances of phelan seeing out the season seem remote.
