he's always been a Heritage Foundation asshole to my knowledge, he just wasn't as...open about it. his "I'm the smartest guy in the room" demeanor rests solely on "I went to Europe back when all American players were trash" which is like, cool, you stood out as a big fish in a small pond once, who cares.

I'm not sure if there *are* any great American footie commentators atm. Taylor Twellman is ok, I don't mind him.
I absolutely hate Stu Holden with the fire of a thousand suns. every time there's an insufferably long VAR check after a goal, he always says "This is the right thing to do, the VAR has to make sure everything looks perfect before giving the green light', and it's like NO, that's NOT what VAR is supposed to do, they're supposed to review for any clear and obvious errors, not re-officiate the footage from scratch, and stop defending CONCACAF officials for being terrible at their jobs.

I will always have a soft spot for JP Dellacamera, tho he's a PBP guy and not really a commentator. I do have some begrudging respect for Twellman* that has formed in recent years

feel like I've told the story on the boards at some point in the past but JP and Rob Stone made time to talk to some friends and I when we had just driven like 16 hours to see the Fire open RBNY Arena in 2010, they were very gracious and friendly and talked straight-up about the match and the Fire's ownership, which we were just starting to suspect was deeply unserious
