It's a top 5 since the CL changed, right? I'd likely look at Chelsea for that spot. Alonso was great at Leverkusan and they don't have Europe, which seemed to help Utd last season. I know it's a ragtag bunch but there are good players there.

Yep, would be nice to think one of the established clubs might be worried (as long as it’s not Spurs again) but Coventry and Ipswich haven’t managed to strengthen much.

Listening to the Guardian preview and 3/4 of their writers had Chelsea 2nd in the league; the 4th had them 4th.

Ipswich haven’t managed to strengthen much.

It’s wild that this is the consensus considering we have spent £150 million, and might get as high as £200m before the end of the window.

I’d love to see them do well but I think Enciso is the only slam dunk signing and a bunch of the people brought in (Kipre, Akpom, Maeda, etc) are Championship-level at best, even as squad players. Would be great to see Fatawu have a good season, though.

Spurs appear to have pivoted from quixotically pursuing a forward all summer from a club that won’t sell unless they have a superior replacement lined up already to pursuing two forwards from the same club.

I’m under no illusions it’s going to be easy for sure, but on paper we are a lot stronger than the squad last time which was half players signed in League One, so for the time being I am hopeful we will may be able to make a better go of it – and have a manager that might be more willing to adjust tactics to the game. But it does speak volumes about just how big the gap is between Premier and Championship these days.

but also... why not give him a chance? would eddie howe have been any better, really, after a new manager bounce? utd needs long term solutions, someone who can stick it out and build something within all the mess. maybe carrick isnt the right man for the job - he doesnt have a great cv - but whatever manager that does attempt it will need another year to get to where he is, and utd dont really have that time.
