Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

Burton Albion - first season - 4-5-1 away, 4-4-2 home struggling to score with 1 striker

Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 10:13 (fourteen years ago)

stade rennais fc - 4-3-2-1. briand up front, golden shoe winner 3 years in a row

sonderangerbot, Friday, 24 September 2010 10:16 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh christmas tree!

Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

my game died but before then I had Charlton playing

    GK
CH CH
RB AM LB
PM REG
TRAQ
DRW POACH

and Arsenal playing

     GK
RB CH CH LB
AM PM
RW IF
TM COMPLETE

Charlton were fluid, p wide, v high line, Counter - made it from league 1 to europa playing like that. (am = anchor man, pm = playmaker, reg = registra (the pirlo, alonso role), drw = defensive right winger).

Arsenal were very fluid, Control, tight back line, kinda wide (if = inside forward w/ arshavin or nasri, tm = target man)

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

I tend to match up with whoever I'm playing except I hate playing 4-4-2 so if faced with it go to 4-2-3-1 DEEP and play through the middle. Had some success vs 3-5-2's by countering with 3-4-3 to give the oppositions back 3 something to think about. Tends to work in the first half before they adjust at half time. My default setting is 4-2-3-1 with no crossing 'tho.

pandemic, Friday, 24 September 2010 11:09 (fourteen years ago)

am a martyr to width and juan riquelme so appropriately enough i've got a 4-1-1-3-1 crucifix thing on the go now. basically i'm letting the oppo have most of the possession, restrict them to long shots, and hope to hit them with the quick breaks; pretty shaky but surprisingly effective on the whole.

(this is pretty much where i was a few months ago, haven't been playing it really.)

probably gonna have to switch it up soon cos my crucial anchor man anthony annan is a violent sod even tho i tell him to go easy and now he's banned for a bit.

r|t|c, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

I have been totally murdered every time I've tried to play fluid football in League 1.

banaka bilk (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

(Am shamelessly pinching ideas here btw)

banaka bilk (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

i started out as a classic 442 with wingers at spurs. fired after 3 months. never gone back since. the christmas tree is superior imo, as long as you got players with decent passing skills and a strong target.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

NV - When I was in League 1 I'd go fluid for home games, rigid for away games (and the occasional change depending on whether opposition was top or bottom of the table)

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

442 is dead in the water imo.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

^ you know its time is well and truly up when even neil warnock doesn't fuck with it any more

r|t|c, Friday, 24 September 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

I feel much the same way but get much improved chances on goal with 2 strikers. Don't like 3-5-2 much and don't have the midfield at Burton to fuck with it. What else do y'all fancy as a 2 striker set-up?

banaka bilk (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

5-3-2 with marauding full backs and a modern sweeper ?

I have an important question to ask about 3-5-2 / 5-3-2. Does it go in here or do we need to get an "Andy Townsend's Tactics Van" kind of thread on the go?

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 24 September 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

depends if its a real life question or a football manager one. feel free to start an "andy townsend's tactics van" thread if only because the name makes me giggle.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'm eternally amazed that Townsend's 'career' survived that whole period. It was so bad it was beyond parody.

pandemic, Friday, 24 September 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Pat Nevin used to have a tactics van on Five, too. Not seen that for a while.

Found what I was looking for, but should defo have a thread with the above title.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 24 September 2010 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

what was yr question?

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

Just wondering what the norm is for teams who play 3-5-2 when it comes to defending. I remember Jason McAteer saying that at Liverpool the right or left winger would drop back to create a back 4 (depending on what side of the pitch the ball was on), but also heard of instances when one of the CMs would drop back into defence to play as a CB, with the players on the right and left of the 3 becoming the RB and LB of the back 4. Come to the conclusion that it depends on what players you have at your disposal and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 24 September 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah exackly. In FM terms the left and right "wings" need to have good defensive ability and plenty of stamina, talked about this with darragh elsewhere but they tend to function almost as advanced wing backs. But I've tried playing a system where the left and right central mids act defensively and the wide players are more orthodox wingers. You could use either system but in real terms it means your 3-5-2 is really a 3-2-3-2 or a 5-3-2.

My default setting is 4-2-3-1 with no crossing 'tho.

How do you set no crossing? I don't think I've missed that option (FM10). I've been playing the same formation with some success at Arsenal (after a year of sticking too rigidly to 4-1-2-2-1 and an endless parade of 0-0 draws against mid table teams) and almost every cross goes nowhere. Although at least since I brought Shawcross in corners aren't as much of a waste of time as they used to be.

if, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

I've seen that option, even.

btw

r|t|c, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

My 'no crossing' is an exaggeration. I just set all the midfielders, and sometimes the full backs, in player instructions to - crossing=rarely, and then cross from= byline. This results in very very few crossing attempts, if the players go down the wing they usually mostly try to play back to the edge of the box along the deck.

pandemic, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, I haven't got into playing around with individual player settings too much so far. That sounds like it would solve my problem, thanks!

if, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

since I brought Shawcross in

Not that kind of manager

You used to be my homeopath (Noodle Vague), Friday, 8 October 2010 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

why no crossing? i get like a 1/3 of my goals that way. ok ok i usually always play w/ someone 6'4" with 18+s for heading, strength and jumping but thats only sensible imo.

http://tinypic.com/r/s0wvar/7 (a hoy hoy), Friday, 8 October 2010 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a big fan of crossing either. defensive players usually outrank offensive players when it comes to heading etc so it seems logical to me.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 8 October 2010 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

I do see it as some kind of moral betrayal to play with wingers tbh.

You used to be my homeopath (Noodle Vague), Friday, 8 October 2010 08:11 (fourteen years ago)

needs s setting for 'low crosses' tbph, so that crouch's height advantage works when sliding in at least.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Friday, 8 October 2010 09:05 (fourteen years ago)

^^^^This! I get so infuriated by the lack of a good hard low cross into the near post.

eleven months pass...

Have got the Orient into the playoffs in my second season playing 4-2DMs-2Wingers-2Target Men but it has been falling apart since March/April and have gone from fighting for automatic promotion to the last play off spot. Dunno what to do to beat the Dons, my team really is built to be very good at one thing. Maybe change one of my big forwards for a second striker in the hole, even though the guy is just nowhere as good? Or just hope being in the playoffs recovers some confidence in them?

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Friday, 16 September 2011 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

promoted! fuck you colchester, i just destroyed yo azzzzzzzzzzzzz. (ended up playing 4-5-1 with 3 DMs because they have a really good playmaker who has the most assists/best pass rate in the league and they nullified him better than if rafa was his coach

Have Nottingham Forest in their 2nd season in the Premier League and my team is unreliable as fuck. They'll stomp on the best teams in the league away and then play the next match like they've never seen a pitch before. Nearly every match I have players on ratings around 5.5 and I can rarely get anyone to perform above 8. I know part of the problem is they're playing over their heads, but you guys know any way to get them going better? The good performances seem totally random. I would love to scream at them personally but there's no option here for "Does anyone on this team give a fuck?"

wmlynch, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

Sure there is. Have one-to-ones with your most unreliable, there should be an option for 'fucking play like this anymore and you're being sold or dropped to the reserves etc.'

How are you set up? Just because pretty football is pretty and comes with some moral high ground of how you'd love the game to be played irl... well, its not real life, so fuck 'em.

One thing that often gets forgotten is setting your team up around your best player(s). So so much of my game went through my right wing this season and full backs and defensive mids were playing to cover my guy, my forward on that side to try and piss off the defenders around him etc. and ok its lower down the leagues so ymmv in the premiership but it was so effective.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 17 September 2011 06:44 (thirteen years ago)

always seem to have a formation that works beautifully for 3 months and then grinds to a horrible halt. finding a lower league dude that can play lone front man is tough

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 08:43 (thirteen years ago)

I'm on FM10 and I have a 4-2-3-1 running that's been effective when the players can be bothered. We're not conceding many goals (except every once in a while when the whole back line just goes to sleep) but my highest goal scorer has 5 and it's the end of December. The problem is I have a small core of high quality players and it's those that keep crapping out. So if I bench one of them each time they have a completely ineffective game, I'd be playing veterans who really ought to be a league or two below. We can create 2-3 chances every game but we're unlikely to actually put the ball in the back of the net.
One week after beating Arsenal at the Emirates, we lost to Man U. at home despite the fact that we had more shots, more shots on target, more chances and 60-40 possession. My attacking mid and my striker had ratings of 5.8 and 5.5. Ugh I seriously just want to kick these people.

One very stupid thing I have done: After getting promoted, I decided I'd buy a whole new front line and attacking midfield, thinking I'd need to win games to stay up. However I still essentially have a League 1 back 4 w/ Titus and an awesome 17 year old left back and I'm losing 4-0 every week to everyone.

I never did nothing to no curry (Noodle Vague), Friday, 28 February 2014 15:01 (eleven years ago)

i am now playing mostly 4-4-2 btw, something i never thought i'd do. except by using roles and duties it's really a lot more fluid than that, but starting wingers from deep and defensive mids from the middle of the park definitely seems the way to go now

I never did nothing to no curry (Noodle Vague), Friday, 28 February 2014 15:03 (eleven years ago)

a hoy hoy, Friday, 28 February 2014 17:56 (eleven years ago)

Found it happened too often in this game that people with mad stacks of potential who came highly recommended by my scouts were just coming up for free / on the cheap in every transfer window. Yassine Benzia, Domenico Berardi, James Ward-Prowse, Tonny Trinidade de Vilhena. Shouldn't be getting players like that at the age of 21/22 on free transfers, idk if it was a bug or what. Otoh it was quite good fun selling them all for about £40 million a few years later to reinvest in lovely regens.

My tactics are just the usual thing on these games really, 4-2-3-1 with a solid defence, a well-balanced midfield and then a revolving cast of attacking talent playing in different combinations in the front four with roles and duties in attack changing depending on what the opposition are doing. Though a favourite is to play a False 9 up front with a Shadow Striker behind him (love the new roles!) because it always confuses the hell out of everyone we play.

I don't believe in the beauty standards (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 1 March 2014 07:51 (eleven years ago)

Wolves won't even let me scout outside the UK in League 1. But i'm 9 points clear at the beginning of Jan so let's hope they change their minds when i get promotion. what i'm ultimately looking to build is a very fluid side, either 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, not decided yet, probably favour the former if i can get the right strikers with the right defensive/transition abilities. all about signing players with the full spread of skills rather than one-trick supermen tbh

I never did nothing to no curry (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 1 March 2014 09:14 (eleven years ago)

New system works so well because the formations are so malleable. 4-4-2 on paper can turn into just about any shape you like if you give your players the correct roles, certainly it's not hard to turn it into a 4-2-3-1 without actually moving the players on the tactics board. If anything 4-4-2 is probably the best system you can go with at all but the very highest levels, because if you play with your wide men in the AMR/AML slots then it's a total bastard to get them to track back, really exposes the fullbacks.

I don't believe in the beauty standards (Windsor Davies), Saturday, 1 March 2014 10:38 (eleven years ago)

yep, that's what i've been finding. also the player familiarity with a position seems pretty malleable, if they've got the right stats for a role/duty then playing most guys mildly "out of position" has v. limited negative effect and the players usually adjust

I never did nothing to no curry (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 1 March 2014 11:11 (eleven years ago)

i like this move away from very defined positional formations, feels realer to me to recognize that what looks like a flat lineup generally doesn't play like one
