Lock thread forever if they lose in the CL qualification against HB Tórshavn or whoever.
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
them losing in qualification to the random european team schteeeve takes over is gonna be joeks.
i know tax evasion and robot dance and eurgh but of all the spurs teams I can remember, this is def. the one i'm ok w/ being (moderately) successful.

For decades the debate has raged about who, Spurs or Man City, are the biggest bottlers. Now we know.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)
oh I think that debate has only just started tbh.
― tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)
i thought Arsenal ended that debate a while back

Arsenal are still a big club.
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)
There are two teams in North London.
Other big clubs who finish 4th in England: Everton, Newcastle, Leeds.
― mierda defensa ... no impedir ... espectador (onimo), Thursday, 6 May 2010 08:15 (fifteen years ago)
Bottlers, Matt? Wasn't it just that we were beaten by the better side last night? I don't think the players choked at all - they gave it a right go, but weren't good enough.
Well done, Spurs.
― Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 6 May 2010 08:18 (fifteen years ago)
^ the kind of thing that means I don't hate City, yet
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 6 May 2010 08:22 (fifteen years ago)
Bottlers is one of the most overused bits of jargon in football imo but yeah I think Spurs had fourth place for a decent enough chunk of 09-10 for it not to be the issue at hand here
― Charged TBH (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 May 2010 08:50 (fifteen years ago)
"Bottlers" seems tied in to that weird desire to make out like footballers are morally deficient for not being good enough to win matches sometimes.
I guess so many of Spurs' standouts this season being old hands is belated redemption for the weakness of their digestive tracts during Lasagnegate.
― MPx4A, Thursday, 6 May 2010 08:57 (fifteen years ago)
Don't think the City players choked, but Mancini's tactics were pretty reserved in the second half.
But tbh either team were good value for CL spot this year ahead of Liverpool and boring boring Villa
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 May 2010 09:05 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, and some people accuse footballers of "lacking passion" when they're not up to scratch in a given game (or in general).
― Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 6 May 2010 10:14 (fifteen years ago)
Some teams do lack passion. Newcastle last year were, player for player, easily good enough to stay up, they just didn't care enough.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 May 2010 10:17 (fifteen years ago)
Adebayor, for both Man City last night (maybe in other games? I dunno) and whenever I saw him last season for Arsenal.
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 May 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)
They looked short of ideas in midfield as well without Ireland. You're not going to get much in the way of incisive passing with De Jong and Barry in there, especially compared to Modric/Huddlestone. There were times when Kolo Toure seemed like their best attacking midfielder.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 May 2010 10:39 (fifteen years ago)
The persistent talk of them selling Ireland just confuses ever more after a performance like that, it's true.

Dunno... the guy did get shot at for playing football. He looked like he was kinda getting back to form before that. 'bottlers' to me are more about the Berbatovs and lol Bordeaux this season, when there is really no excuse why supremely talented top of the table types (lol hungover alliteration) just chuck it in for no reason.

Adebayor hadn't been shot at while playing out his last 6 months in an Arsenal team that badly needed a leader from the front last season.
Maye those guys were actually gunners, ifyagetme.
Berbatov- another example of Ferguson's tactical shortcomings. Players either work or they don't, and if they don't then it's their fault.
― Get fourth and multiply (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:31 (fifteen years ago)

― tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)
berbatov was supremely talented when Spurs were last as well tbrr
If Spurs had drawn with Man City and then lost to Burnley, that would have counted as bottling.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:33 (fifteen years ago)
yep.
if jol had dropped robinson at any stage over 2 years, it wouldn't have been counted as bottling.
not rocket science- when you don't bottle you're not bottling.
beating city, arsenal and chelsea in the last 5 games to seal it is basically anti-jol/bottle stuff.
― Get fourth and multiply (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

City, who have just sealed their third Premier League title in four years, are not the only club in for Kane but would be one of the most attractive options and are believed to have registered their interest more recently. While Kane was with the England squad in March, he is said to have asked the City players present what their lives were like, living in the north west. So much so that after the international break, those players were left with one very clear impression: that Kane was set for a move to the Etihad Stadium

It'll be interesting to see how many concrete offers there will be if Haaland and possibly Mbappe are also moving this summer.
Even with £100m+ in transfer fees, idk how Spurs could come anywhere close to replacing him. I can't imagine Immobile or Dybala are going to be swayed by Europa Conference League football under Scotty Parker.

Potter preferable to Parker, for sure, though the manager who got the most out of the worst squad was probably Allardyce, even if nobody is ready for that conversation.
― Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 09:08 (four years ago)
agree he's hard to replace for Tottenham...and there's a lot of ways to squander to squander 100MIL, spurs have form..
― Swanswans, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 22:27 (four years ago)
150 mil scattergunned across say five positions where we are most in need would be fine, if the hit rate was ok (hasnt been in years) but what im hungriest for is seven or eight of that squad gone, at any price.
Raise 250m, spend it all, potter in, maybe id still care in august
― flagpost fucking (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 23:04 (four years ago)
Tottenham started planning for Kane's exit in February and explored the possibility of signing in-demand Norway striker Erling Braut Haaland, 20, from Borussia Dortmund. (Mail)
Back to the good old days of ‘being linked to’ a dozen players who are more likely to quit and take up chess than sign.
Two new CBs, cover for Hojbjerg, a decent CF and maybe a creative midfielder would improve the balance but Darragh is absolutely correct that half of the current team needs to leave.

The Times is reporting Spurs have agreed a £25m fee for Bissouma, presumably discounted on account of his ongoing police investigation.
That’s £20m less than Brighton had previously asked iirc. Doesn’t seem a great idea under the circumstances however much of an upgrade he is on Hojbjerg.

― anserine machine (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 March 2026 17:58 (four days ago)
I don't necessarily think Dyche is brilliant or whatever, I just think they don't really have any choice for the reasons GP offers. And he can prob hammer together a difficult to beat shit team in a way that others can't. The idea of bringing in De Zerbi at the moment is like using a grenade to quench a fire.
xpost he is average but I guess relegation firefighter is a specific role and he has some success there? I guess that's the debate here, whether it's a distinct task or role for the relegation situation.

― Schlub 7 (Tom D.), Sunday, 29 March 2026 18:01 (four days ago)
i'm really not so sure he can take any old bunch of players and teach them to effectively park the bus in the space of a week or two. and i feel like maybe when he's had some success with this in the past he's at the very least had a January window to exert some kind of influence on the squad. basically i feel like is rep is exaggerated and that there's little reason to assume previous "successes" are a guide to how he'll perform at any new job
― anserine machine (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 March 2026 18:29 (four days ago)
Yeah it's defo not a certainty. I guess I wonder is there a kind of base level of shitball that makes sense when a team is in total freefall and if it's not a skill to coach it it might be more a case that it's just about hiring someone who is shameless and spent enough to implement it.
― LocalGarda, Sunday, 29 March 2026 18:31 (four days ago)
