a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 September 2010 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Argentina opting to play with no defence.

Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

France, no question about it.

Matt DC, Friday, 24 September 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

(ridicule heightened by replays of the goal being shown v quickly afterwards on the

screens inside the stadium that should finish

god of tosh (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2010 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

Most ridiculous is France; most memorable is the Suarez handball.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

The Tevez incident, because everything else has an explanation that makes it less ridiculous, not more.

Anyway, this poll rather clears up whether it was a vintage world cup or not, thanks!

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

BBC coverage, punditry etc being worse than ITV's sometimes

are you sure?

the cusses of 2 live crew (stevie), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

it's france. though i'll admit just the other day the england - algeria game crossed my mind and i felt a bit offended. and i'm not even british ffs

sonderangerbot, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

nice poll though

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

couldn't even be bothered to include Italy

god of tosh (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:31 (fourteen years ago)

Special SPL-tastic write-in vote for "Edson Braafheid getting on as a sub in the final"

ailsa, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

lampard goal was honest reffing mistake (exacerbated by blatter no doubt), the tevez offside thing + stadium replay was worse officiating though (not necessarily by people on the pitch).

but yeah, france.

caek, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

what was the kaka red?

caek, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

Ivorean feigned an elbow to the face or something?

banaka bilk (Noodle Vague), Friday, 24 September 2010 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 September 2010 13:00 (fourteen years ago)

NEW ZEALAND UNBEATEN

Who needs wins when you can have DRAWS?

Hipstamatic Priest (King Boy Pato), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

Also: Joachim Löw's fashion decisions.

Hipstamatic Priest (King Boy Pato), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:13 (fourteen years ago)

and nose picking decisions

sonderangerbot, Friday, 24 September 2010 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

will prob be the only person that voted for Lampard's non-goal but I honestly think it was a more absurd and collectively incompetent decision than anything else on here, although I doubt it'll be remembered as such

Heurelho Gomes & The Scene (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 September 2010 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

also, write-in vote for "if you find the sound of vuvuzelas annoying you are a racist iirc" type blogpieces

Heurelho Gomes & The Scene (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 September 2010 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

Alan Shearer Explains Apartheid should be separate from the generic BBC/ITV divide.

ailsa, Friday, 24 September 2010 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

I think the winner has to be one of those three 'decision' ones. I've gone for the Lampard one, but I think the USA and Mexico decisions were equally outrageous.

Running the Gantelope (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 24 September 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

voted Decision against USA for the amt of screaming I did, but Suarez is probably more memorable overall

dan m, Friday, 24 September 2010 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

1. France
2. Decision against USA because it deprived me £££
3. New Zealand

god of tosh (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

I had to vote France. Bad calls are one thing but the sustained and inexplicable idiocy of the French team was too weird not to vote for.

I was thrilled for NZ, tbh.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Friday, 24 September 2010 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

and it's not just the handball, it's the following pk miss too obv

dan m, Friday, 24 September 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

I think if Alan Shearer, social commentator got its own spot I'd pick it. But instead I'll go for New Zealand, to further cement it in my mind for that inevitable 2023 pub quiz question.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 25 September 2010 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

no question for me that sustained ridiculousnessosity of france has it

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Sunday, 26 September 2010 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

BIG OMISSION FROM THIS POLL = the miracle US goal against slovenia to send them through

i might've voted for the de jong goal (fuck voting an other) because that was O_O and i still use the term "absolute firecracker" whenever i can

no referee decisions in soccer ever surprise me -- i feel like it's p much a miracle if there isn't at least two beyond egregious decisions in every match, so i've crossed those off the list

that leaves me w/ the suarez deliberate handball just because that whole sequence of events was so insane

shartopus (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, those five minutes were pretty real

caek, Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't wanna vote for France because that storm had been brewing for a good long while before the Finals. The Suarez thing was hella dramatic but nothing I'd necessarily call "ridiculous". The most ridiculous thing I remember might've been 1 absolutely disastrous refereeing performance - I think it was Chile vs Switzerland - where the ref was an absolute joke who was carding players seemingly at random until it got to the point where you really felt like the game was about to collapse into anarchy.

dociah t. azzahole (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

not a winner, but JT's mutiny and subsequent slapdown was a lovely moment

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

where the ref was an absolute joke who was carding players seemingly at random until it got to the point where you really felt like the game was about to collapse into anarchy.

Hardly shocking, that happens at least once in every World Cup.

Matt DC, Sunday, 26 September 2010 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

i might've voted for the de jong goal (fuck voting an other) because that was O_O and i still use the term "absolute firecracker" whenever i can

i'm not sure i remember this?

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 26 September 2010 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

wrong about de Jong - 'twas van Bronckhorst iirc - but right about 'absolute firecracker'

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 September 2010 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

ah yes van bronckhorst, that was insane. i love how you can hear the crowd react to the replay here, realizing exactly what he'd done
