Greatest goal ever

half thinking about this being a nomination thread for above, in the vein of the greatest tv shows and greatest movies threads (not the knockout format used for foods/canon etc).

But y'know, all the others seem like a lot of work, and a lot to live up to, so i'm not committing myself or anything :)

the best goal ever

Matt DC, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Go for it Darragh, but keep noms limited to five or ten each - the dance music polls are going very wrong in this regard.

Will wrack(?) brains etc.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah do a proper poll, limited nominations I think.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:14 (fourteen years ago)

Matt- I did see that other thread but tbh it didn't seem to fit the dedicated purpose of a nomination thread tbf.

IK- i bow to your experience in these things, and yeah i hadn't forseen a huge amount of individual nominations but tbh i've got a bit of time during the weeks this next while so i'm going to let it run and see how it goes.

comedy nominations such as lj's will be weighed up before acceptance however.

blurbs would be good with nominations.

no but it is now :D

cambyrdsclosetvacuumsounds4fun (acoleuthic), Monday, 20 September 2010 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

5 nominations each, i think. should concentrate the mind, and it seems like plenty? (given that there'll be loads of duplicates?). then the usual ballot of the list produced and countdown of the top 50 etc?

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

That Bergkamp goal is probably my favourite ever. I think because with almost all goals, no matter how brilliant, they are always imaginable. I'll be watching on TV and yell "shoot" even if it's from some improbable distance or urge someone to hit a volley off a spinning ball even though the odds of getting it on target are massively against. With that Bergamp goal however, I was watching the match and it literally never for one second crossed my mind that he would do that in that way. Incredible!

Plus even if it's really obvious the van Basten Euro '88 Final goal has some of that quality also.

pandemic, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

post it!

tho if you want to take time to think it over that's cool too :)

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

and yeah, the brevity of the bergkamp goal is part of what makes it so stunning- "oh look i've done this" and every single person watching it for the first time reaches for the rewind button.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

terry venables didn't even give bergkamp's goal Goal Of The Day on ITV's Premiership show

that honour went to chris marsden vs ipswich

(tho that was from a sinclair assist tbf)

scholes goal that weekend one fo the greats too, but not worthy of this thread i don't think.

paul breitner in the 74 (?) world cup is hovering around the edges of my consciousness, as are a couple of the team goals from the dutch in that tournament

glenn hoddle and matt le tiss will get one spot each, but my ignorance of other leagues and maybe lack of historical knowledge will let me down. hopefully we'll discover a football morbs along the way to berate us for our MOR picks and broaden our horizons

I'll try to keep up the Scottish football end of things here. Currently I'm thinking:

Archie Gemmill v Holland 1978
Shunsuke Nakamura v Rangers 2008

and some other obvious candidates (James McFadden v France, David Narey v Brazil, John Hartson v Liverpool) which, while undoubtedly favourites of mine, aren't really Best Goal Ever candidates.

I'll get back to you when I get home from work and have a wee think.

the turn and chip? yeah, i'd not be as certain that's my #1 as you are, but it's up there on merit, definitely

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

My dad's favourite goal ever is a Billy McNeill header against Vojvodina in 1967 when Celtic were en route to the European Cup Final. I must try and find that somewhere (youtubing time limited at work), but I do refuse to believe that a header will win dis ting.

ailsa, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

i remember that one michael but i'm not even sure it's mcateer's best for ireland, he scored an opener against oh i dunno macedonia or someone that was a peach drive early on in kerr's tenure (pulling all of these facts out of the air tbh)

a header will not win dis ting

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

a header will almost certainly win the partner poll 'Best OG ever' (Frank Sinclair I'm looking at you here bud)

i'd post r carlos' free kick but tbh i feel it's been sullied by the 150341 attempts that ballooned wildly over or wide in teh rest of his carer.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

I've seen at least two goals where he's smashed in from out wide on or near the byline

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

that's still only 1 goal in every 50113.66 attempts tbf

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:25 (fourteen years ago)

I also saw a counter-counter-factual stat once to the effect that his scoring rate from free-kicks was higher than Beckham's - not that I believed it for a second, I'm just saying there's more than one school of thought here.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Now that you raise the issue, the very concept of a free kick expert whose particular skill is 'hitting the ball really hard' is kind of odd, no? It's hardly a remarkable trait among professional footballers.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

i enjoy those fachts as much as the next person, but let's be real- how does his assist rate stack up with Beckham's from set plays? Because Carlos never did nuthin but sprint and batter it, whereas Beckham was a trajectory machine.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

He is still with us.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

Well, this is what I'm getting at- Carlos hit the air tube or w/e that one time, it went around the world, he got the rep, nobody ever pulled him aside and said 'enough's enough with the 'R1, d-pad fwd and holding down the square button to max free kicks, son'.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

They both are, actually.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah on an unrelated note i approve the shit out of players going all over the place after their peak- power to them if it keeps the equivalent of a local jenas out of a team somewhere

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

The whole thing proved a bit of a dilemma really. Great goal etc, and in principle that justifies everything. Of course there came a point a couple of years later where you realised that no matter how often he tried it it was never going to happen again. The problem then arose a couple years after that when pundits & commentators twigged to the same thing and eg Ron Atkinson starts treating him as a figure of fun. So of course you find yourself willing it to be otherwise - I'm sure that implausible stat was employed by me on many an occasion even though I always knew it had to be bollocks.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

You're just saying that to get rid of Robbie Keane back up to the SPL, aren't you?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

ha didn't read that before dashing off to lunch.

essentially, it was actually a once-in-a-lifetime goal. i do think his coaches ought to have had a go at him within say a season of trying to emulate it and therefore wasting 80% of all setpieces within 45 yards of goal.
