On 2 June 2009, Denilson signed a six month contract with Vietnamese club Xi Măng Hải Phòng earning $5.5m, a deal that makes the Brazilian the V-League's highest paid player in its history
In May 2010, Tony Adams signed a three-year contract to manage Azerbaijani club Gabala FC of the Azerbaijan Premier League.[14] A surprising decision which Adams justified as a unique opportunity to start from zero to build a successful football club.[15]

On 1 September 2008, the final day of the Premier League summer transfer window, Robinho completed a €42.5 million (£32.5m) move to Manchester City F.C.

aiden mcgeady to spartak moscow was a surprising move

Not as surprising as Cillian Sheridan to CSKA Sofia. I have no idea what was going on there, tbh. It's like some elaborate prank.

Rivaldo left Bunyodkor last month after two years in Uzbekistan, though tbh I'm not convinced such a team actually exists

How reliable is the source for that Denilson story btw? That's over $200,000 a week, even if it is shortish-term. I'm having a little trouble believing the V-League's top guy outearns the Premiership's.

He gets around. There's also Gazza's inexplicable spell with Gansu Tianma.

Ismael, a lot of premiership players make more than $200k a week? still it must be a lot of money for the vietnamese league
― sonderangerbot, Saturday, 25 September 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago)
Not sure that's right - the exchange rate is better than I'd thought but it still works out at £125k a week. As I understood (going by the unimpeachable tabloid press) Lampard, Terry, Robinho et al only started hovering around that mark recently, before Yaya Toure obliterated it this summer.

The VFF report said the Brazilian's contract only stipulated payment for matches he played. He was paid $12,000 for the match and a $5,000 bonus for the goal, online newspaper Ngoisao.net reported.

maybe not surprising as such but still, whatta life

ah that's amazing. I do sometimes wonder why more journeyman-ish players don't decide to make as much of a globetrotting go of it as possible. Why cycle through the clubs of the Championship when some Swedish mediocrities would love to have you for six months before you head to Brazil?

yeah yaya is on £250k a week (& tbf has undoubtably been their best player this season)

I wonder about that Greenland <-> Falklands link that shows up at the very end. Who on earth was that, Rivaldo?
