But seriously now. This is with 10 men, in injury time, away to the league champions.

golf balls = bad and once one has figured this out, there is only one logical thing to throw at an opposition goalkeeper...

Some coaches get their shot with a major club at a relatively tender age (in coaching years, anyway). Barcelona's Pep Guardiola was 37 when he got the gig.

And there are those who get a crack at the big time without ever having played beyond amaetur level, like Aston Villa's Gerard Houllier. There's another, smaller subset which includes those who advanced to top jobs with little or no head-coaching experience, like Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho when he took over at Benfica.

But the above examples are all rare. Rarer still is a guy like Porto boss Andre Villas Boas, who falls squarely in all three categories and, if his vertical ascent continues, could herald a change in the way clubs recruit managers.

A top manager who's younger than me now. That's excellent. (good article btw)

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 November 2010 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

Got the Bucharest derby on now. Makes for quite a depressing spectacle actually. A big city derby between skilful players and fans who care (if not that many of them) - it should be a big occasion but it's just not.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 November 2010 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

which one? there's steaua, dinamo, rapid....possibly others

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Monday, 8 November 2010 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

Steaua-Rapid. Those are the big two I thought? 0-0 after 66 mins. Steaua have hit post and bar in the last few minutes.

currently somewhere in the north sea padding furiously in his coracle en route to newcastle

Princess TuomTuom (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 December 2010 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

seems like a better place for him. Ajax is too posh for Jol (or likes to think it is) + you don't want to be at Ajax anyway cause they are in permanent crisis, killed by their own high expectations. at PSV there's only 1 possible crisis per season, if someone discovers 3 weeks before the end of the league that they are not going to win it that year. Ajax is in crisis after they drop their first points of the season (in august usually).

Ludo, Monday, 6 December 2010 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

they are in permanent crisis, killed by their own high expectations

he'll enjoy newcastle then

what happened to ajax, they were doing alright last time i checked (they were pretty solid in the 1-1 vs milan)

Princess TuomTuom (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 December 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

oh i don't really know. their 1-1 at Milan was their only good CL match though. maybe Seedorf convinced his teammates to take it easy.
Suarez is about their only really good player and he's been out of shape since the start of the season. the World Cup probably killed him. (and now he's out for 7 matches after the Nosferatu incident)

Ludo, Monday, 6 December 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

'out of shape', maybe 'in bad shape' is a more correct way of saying it. or in bad form. anyway..

Ludo, Monday, 6 December 2010 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

defoe bit mascherano a few years ago and he didn't get a 7 game ban (2 or 3 iirc)

Princess TuomTuom (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 December 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

but Jol described it as a 'cheeky nibble' or somesuch so it was ok

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Monday, 6 December 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

Wait, I want more insights into the Dutch class system please. Picturing Jol as stout peasantry, washing feet in the bidet, etc.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

damn xp that's true, what is it about jol's presence that makes players so hungry?

Princess TuomTuom (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

well for example Jol walks around and watches matches wearing a baseball cap. this makes Ajax-people grind their teeth, as an Ajax coach should wear a proper suit and most definetely not a cap, it's so proletarian.

Ludo, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

i remember reading that jol was quite sophisticated and collected art for example

please tell me i haven't imagined this

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, except it's Beryl Reads and Jack Vettrianos

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

Sticking point at the moment is Mike Ashley trying to persuade the Baltic to let him curate an exhibition of magic eyes

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Jol sits back in his chair and recalls his artistic epiphany. "It is true. I was playing for Den Haag at the time, a UEFA Cup tie away to Rapid Vienna. And suddenly I thought, we are here in this great cultural city, so we should see some things. That was my introduction to Aktionism, to Beuys, to Kubelka". These days Jol is more likely to enjoy the more earthy pleasures of Winchmore Hill, but days away from training see him taking in the great galleries of London. "Perhaps I will convince Teemu or Berba to come along! But to be honest with you, footballers are not so clever".

this is awesome

Porto clinched their 25th Portuguese Liga title by beating arch-rivals Benfica 2-1 in a thrilling classico at the Stadium of Light, but had to celebrate in the dark.

Porto's players poured onto the pitch to jubilate at the final whistle but as the home fans filed out, the stadium lights were turned off and the sprinklers came on.

However, the cold shower did little to spoil the champions title party and they continued to celebrate in the dark. Porto coach André Villas Boas simply said: "We showed who plays the best football."

Neuchatel Xamax are set to be taken over by Chechen businessman Bulat Chagaev, the Swiss first division club said on Thursday.
"Neuchatel Xamax is happy to announce the takeover of the famous club by the businessman Bulat Chagaev," the twice Swiss champions said in a statement.
"This takeover, the value of which is being kept confidential, will be officially ratified by the general assembly on May 12."
Chagaev has promised to take the unsung Swiss side into the Champions League.
"I'm very happy to lead Neuchatel onto the path of national victory," he said.
"With a motivated and well-prepared team, we will quickly accept the most incredible challenges in Europe, starting with the Champions League."

Porto, 2-0 up away to Marítimo, are three minutes from wrapping up an unbeaten season. 27 wins, 3 draws. Their last league defeat was February 2010 at Sporting.

Marítimo's stadium, which seats 9000, is almost completely empty. I know it's a meaningless final-round match, but still you'd think one of the best teams in Europe could draw a crowd. Villas-Boas doesn't seem to mind.

boxall, Saturday, 14 May 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

My mum & dad were in Madeira this winter. One night they got chatting to their waiter, who it turned out plays for Maritimo. From that I'm guessing they don't see big crowds for anyone down there.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 14 May 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

I hope Porto keep their word and hold on to most everyone for another run at the CL next season. They should beat Braga for the Europa League title, but facing domestic opposition takes a bit of the shine off a European final in my opinion.
