I tried and tried but couldn't find any more specific aerial photos of it.

Taking off from Newark at sunrise was the greatest where-the-hell-is-my-camera moment of my life - something like the above but with even better light.

Funny how the side of the ground where they built the Main Stand in 1971 is still basically the same shape as it is here.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

Did you manage to take a photo, michael? Would like to see if so, even if it's ot

caek, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

that's in 1948. they talked about getting rid of the cricket grass for a long time, e.g. here's parky in 1970

No, unfortunately. Was feeling a bit spacey, not sure I'd slept more than a couple of hours and dragging the manual film SLR out of the stowed carry-on was beyond me.

I find grounds that've changed shape confusing. This is Parkhead in 1984. You see footage of old Celtic or Chelsea games and you wonder where on earth they are.

and even earlier. This one is undated, but given that there must be 60 or 70 thousand people there and barely a vehicle in sight, I'm guessing it'd be 30s or before. It is Govan, right enough.

Thanks you guys :-(

not aerial but

Craighead Stadium, Lesmahagow - Lesmahagow v Irvine Meadow, 1948 - record crowd of 24,000

Some sad old sights here from old non-league football in Scotland.

This is where I saw my first juniors match:

This used to be Roseberry Park, host of many school and amateur cup finals:

Also not aerial, but *sniff* RIP Kingsmills Park, home of most of my formative football-watching years:

ailsa, Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

All amazing. Roseberry Park's double touchlines are a bit strange - perfect for tennis maybe. It's surprising how touchlines are so visible when they're only a couple of inches wide. Here's Hackney marshes from space, no problem at all from 400 miles up:

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7438/hackneymarshes.jpg

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Cathkin Park is astonishing. Just looking at some non-aerial shots now, it's well worth a thread of its own some day.

The ultimate aerial shot - Hampden in 1954, with Cathkin Park in the background, and Lesser Hampden just visible on the left.
