voted for barry. they did a live podcast a week or two a guy and the guy was DRUNK, which was awesome. also he sounds like a 50+year old codger but i saw a picture of him, he's probably mid-thirties.

sid is a dude as well, he gets my alternate vote.

Don't listen to podcast purely for the fear I may encounter Glendenning. Already had to stop reading the Guardian online because of his anti-intellectual, unfunny and unoriginal observations.

barry's not that bad. not really feeling the studenty cult status though. (same applies to sid lowe to some extent.)

non-jimbo fave would be rafa defo. paul doyle not far behind. least fave = sean ingle by a million miles.

is glendenning really anti-intellectual? i mean besides being irish...

on second thoughts maybe i'll retract my ingle hate a few thousand miles - he is supremely irritating but can occasionally spark off something entertaining from the other panelists, which you can't say about pointless boring ashdown/dart.

Perhaps anti-intellectual is harsh but a friend of mine says 'football is where the English go to be stupid' and BG is the epitome of that, even if he's not English. I don't actually find him funny in print - mean-spirited, trite and bullying in his GU minute-by-minutes - but maybe it's all about delivery.

I think my disike of Glendenning comes down to this.

Football journalism is full of moralistic miserablist know-alls pontificating from the sidelines and while I can't stand Barclay, Lawton, Williams, Collins et al, I can at least appreciate that they - at one time at least loved the game and know it intimately (or the way it used to be, when it was so much better) as they interviewed and socialised with the players and managers. They annoy me and I think they are wrong about nearly everything, but I get where they are coming from.

But then somebody like BG comes along who is full of the old-man cynicism and bitterness and obvious distate/contempt for football, but with none of the background that at least partly legitimises that stance. The other Guardianistas like Smyth and Taylor can be just as annoying at times with their snide and flippant comments, but Smyth knows football and Taylor has good contacts (albeit all at one club).

the start of this week's episode about ireland/germany is just amazing. bit irish-centric obv but i still recommend it.

Glendenning seemingly wilfully mispronouncing names "mourinho" being the main one grates. Also his inability to ever rise above bloke-in-a-pub level of input on anything ever.

Is Gregg Bakowski the worst panel member they've ever had? It's pretty stiff competition I know but he is just the fucking pits. Constantly sounds like he's about to burst into tears.

I've completely jumped ship. it's basically football weekly without barry

or sid lowe - who i like well enough as a writer but i don't really care for on a podcast

i had a little go at the new European football one, On The Continent, cause I like wondering how many football matches Andy Brassell is supposed to have watched in a given week, but those twunts from the Football Ramble just make it unlistenable. The presenter one in particular is staggeringly awful

i abhor the football ramble with all my soul.
