ummed & ahhed about james richardson's inclusion

cozen, Thursday, 28 October 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

voted for barry. they did a live podcast a week or two a guy and the guy was DRUNK, which was awesome. also he sounds like a 50+year old codger but i saw a picture of him, he's probably mid-thirties.

sid is a dude as well, he gets my alternate vote.

156, Thursday, 28 October 2010 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

lol barry's wiki: In September 2010, after a prolonged absence from podcast Football Weekly , substance abuse allegations appeared on podcast Football Weekly comments. [3] Such claims have been due to a nicotine patch.

156, Thursday, 28 October 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

find this unlistenable due to that barry guy. he's like aural kryptonite.

zappi, Thursday, 28 October 2010 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

<3 barry

raphael hongistein, cause, as an american, i can understand his english the best.

mizzell, Thursday, 28 October 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

hongistein says "of course" in this dismissive continental way that makes me apoplectic. you fucking guy! glad he hasn't been on much lately

156, Thursday, 28 October 2010 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Rafa Honigstein by a considerable margin.

can't stand john ashdown

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 29 October 2010 09:51 (fourteen years ago)

Don't listen to podcast purely for the fear I may encounter Glendenning. Already had to stop reading the Guardian online because of his anti-intellectual, unfunny and unoriginal observations.

Pete W, Friday, 29 October 2010 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

barry's not that bad. not really feeling the studenty cult status though. (same applies to sid lowe to some extent.)

non-jimbo fave would be rafa defo. paul doyle not far behind. least fave = sean ingle by a million miles.

r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

is glendenning really anti-intellectual? i mean besides being irish...

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 29 October 2010 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

on second thoughts maybe i'll retract my ingle hate a few thousand miles - he is supremely irritating but can occasionally spark off something entertaining from the other panelists, which you can't say about pointless boring ashdown/dart.

r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

poll forgot that brazilian dude too.

r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

my friend says that honigstein is awesome and that glendenning is funny but severely lacking in sophisticated thought

but then my friend's totally in it for the intellectualism :D

ukhhchavvin' (acoleuthic), Friday, 29 October 2010 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

Perhaps anti-intellectual is harsh but a friend of mine says 'football is where the English go to be stupid' and BG is the epitome of that, even if he's not English. I don't actually find him funny in print - mean-spirited, trite and bullying in his GU minute-by-minutes - but maybe it's all about delivery.

Pete W, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

'football is where the English go to be stupid'

That's grand, I'm having that one for myself.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

I might put it on a t-shirt.

Pete W, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

wasn't surprised to hear about BG being a failed standup comedian

zappi, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:37 (fourteen years ago)

poll also omits paulo bandini and the argentine (?) woman who speaks in a very drawn-out dramatic way (though she isn't on very much)

mizzell, Friday, 29 October 2010 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

Marcela Mora y Araujo is her name

mizzell, Friday, 29 October 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

i vote barry because every panel needs a grump

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 29 October 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

although i will say that honigstein is very good-looking

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 29 October 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

I think my disike of Glendenning comes down to this.

Football journalism is full of moralistic miserablist know-alls pontificating from the sidelines and while I can't stand Barclay, Lawton, Williams, Collins et al, I can at least appreciate that they - at one time at least loved the game and know it intimately (or the way it used to be, when it was so much better) as they interviewed and socialised with the players and managers. They annoy me and I think they are wrong about nearly everything, but I get where they are coming from.

But then somebody like BG comes along who is full of the old-man cynicism and bitterness and obvious distate/contempt for football, but with none of the background that at least partly legitimises that stance. The other Guardianistas like Smyth and Taylor can be just as annoying at times with their snide and flippant comments, but Smyth knows football and Taylor has good contacts (albeit all at one club).

Pete W, Friday, 29 October 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

shit! totally forgot about fernando duarte. he's one of my faves too, luv that li'l dude

cozen, Friday, 29 October 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

(and paulo bandini obv, who I can take or leave despite my luv of serie A. think ac jimbo covers that better, if only for the wistful quality he brings to his recollections... might just be me projecting there tho)

cozen, Friday, 29 October 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

smyth really grinds me gears.

i agree tho about bg, he doesn't know a huge amount about football.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 29 October 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

I read all of darraghmac's posts in bg's voice

let me help you with your screen name problems (cozen), Friday, 29 October 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

My best friend, then, who listens to every episode:

The show would be NOTHING without James Richardson
It's a no-brainer
Honigstein is best guest
I would say
but i'd add that Glendenning is essential to the mix
as the comic relief / motley fool
I think Jonathan Wilson is overrated
he's better in print
Sid Lowe is great
obv
Yet to be won over by Michael Cox
but he's quite new to the mix
