in game match engine is soooooo much better. quick tactic changes available, much more smooth 3d engine, you can actually watch tactics take shape. easier to understand changing how yr team do set pieces as well.

I recently started up a new game, and ~ yet again, as if I didn't know this already ~ I cannot play this game without cheating. I add transfer funds, create a likeness with players to sign for my team, making a nobody a wunderkid just because I like their name, add a sponsor deal here and there, heal my team before a big game (which I re-play from the save file if I lose it). And still get enthusiastic when Fabregas agrees to play for my team even though I arranged it all by cheating and fucking around with the editor. If a God existed, that must be how he would feel: he's arranged it all but still looks down on what's happening with naive, self-denying delight.

It makes me feel full of disgust for myself. What a horrible, horrible prank on humanity's weaker souls this game is.

This game is my nemesis. It awakes the abyss so it can stare back at me.

Dunno if it's a bug but Tranmere went thru about 20 managers last season, kept luring dopes away from their Conference sides and then 2 weeks later they were putting another guy in.

honestly, it is a terrificly nuanced game. things like dropping a forward who doesn't score will make him work harder, as opposed to 'he has best stats, he must score most'. also what are yr team talks like? my arsenal team was down the shitter in my first year, languishing around mid table for most of it (lol also this team in real life amirite) but i noticed i was being too passionate and too angry if something went wrong etc. - dudes generally work best when relaxed, patient and knowing their game is the right one.

oh and tactics are a p big mindfield too. if you want a barca-esque possession game for example, you can't just see that barca score 10 a game and assume it would be set to overload. they control the game and are patient in waiting for a chance. otoh if you are just kicking it around the halfway line and they need to be reminded to fucking win games, you need to tell them so, stick it to overload for 10 mins and use your shouts appropriately. i often get worried that my team is missing chances or being too lax with the ball and if they haven't scored by halftime, i'm kick them up from standard/control to overload and have them hoof balls into the box for 10/15 minutes. it sees my possession go from 65% avg to 50% avg in 15 minutes but it reminds guys to wake up and try and win games.

with defenders... fuck knows. my back 4 has never really been a problem. they are set up like stoke though - essentially 4 centre halves and all over 5' 10". Also v. fast and v. strong. They aren't v. smart or technical and just do the basics. Basically, having Gallas be a dick or whatever without discipline may not help? Call them on their bullshit, drop them when they play badly, talk in the press (both good and bad), etc.

midfielders just giving it away... you didn't recall jenas? this may be to do with the pace of your game not matching your passing style. if everything is quick quick quick quick you have to get rid of the ball straight away and you make mistakes because you don't think about it. this is fine if all you plan on is hoofing it, assuming a target man is going to sort it when he gets it. but if it is nuanced one touch possession, you want to have time thinking about positioning and where each ball leads and have some time and patience.

basically, i think the game is as far from ever about 'find one right formation and crack it' or whatever you said. teams adapt! and you play different teams! you need to learn tactics, just like in an rpg you need to learn why use a different weapon to defeat x or y. 3-4-2-1 has started making its way into the premiership in my game, for example, in 2016. It is to combat 4-2-3-1 and... its fucking working! And you can't just sit back and presume your tactic will still work all the time, especially as teams change. (So I've started experimenting with a libero to combat the 1 and moving my team forward, a whole midfield clusterfuck... to varying success...).

been playing fm10 and i'm into like 2019 or something and every team is playing 5-3-2 and just packing the box. can't find any space within 20-30 yrds of goal. got fucking boring.

start playing 2-3-5 against smaller teams then, just fucking scare them.

my fm10 game is in 2046 atm. 3-4-1-2 seems to be popular. When facing 5-3-2 I either go with one up front which seems to bother the 5 man defense or go with a 4-3-3 where the 3 attackers are all CF's, the central one set to advanced and the 2 either side set to deep lying, I combine this with a standard approach and direct tactics. Works well as long as you have 3 decent CMs.

adapting to the opposition is for the weak of character imo

oh snap. i always adapt to the opposition. my preferred formation only ever comes out when facing 4-4-2.

Play 4-5-1 vs 3-4-3 and 3-5-2
4-3-3 vs 4-3-1-2 and 3-4-3

otm. i have 'the new romario' and 'the new di stefano' and they just don't fucking score. but then my turkish 23m 18 year old already has 60 goals under his belt, so i guess they are just intimidated by his talent. he started at 16, his name is 'oluc koc' so i find myself thinking i love koc too much and he will have a better arsenal career than henry and wright combined. his stats already match spurs's cavani and he is noway near his potential.

My playing tends to be 'open fm while on my laptop, surfing the internet or whatever, check back every 5or10 minutes or every 2hours to see what the score is at halftime/fulltime/go on holiday until matchday.' Only time I get obsessive is a) the two weeks the game comes out and i'm learning the new nuances of it and b) during the in-game summer/jan windows, which in reality is just 2 hours on a sunday morning.

(also when suffering from insomnia is can become a+ fun/intentionally looking at statistics of thousands of free agents can send you to sleep.)
