i hate how mourinho has turned madrid vs barcelona into such a manichaean affair, as if imparting any grace at all is just impossible and he has to be as much of a cunt as possible all the fucking time

graceless is exactly right

^^^ this (onimo), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

at least he used to be funny sometimes, now he contests every uncontestable decision, excuses every inexcusable foul and helps rile up his merry band of biddable wankers like pepe and sergio ramos into borderline psychopaths by the end of every barcelona game

nakhchivan, Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

yes that's right, mou alone has poisoned this heretofore gentlemanly kickabout

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

that was his intention and he has succeeded in making the usually dislikeable real madrid into a truly vile load of shit and the usually fractious derby games into vitriolic nonsense (and in practical terms it works to his advantage and the gulf between them has narrowed)

and this is a rather likeable barcelona side, with most of its stars being affable, relatively humble types and only really busquets adding some sinister elements

this disturbs the way things ought to be nowadays, in which 'nothing is clear-cut', 'it's more complicated than that' etc

nakhchivan, Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

I am normally a fan of José but I find him a bit worse than usual at Real, he doesn't take losing well and he's been losing for a while. Mind you I feel like we didn't see him at his absolute worst in England cos his dad Fergie was there to keep him in check.

I find the press conferences increasingly nasty and just full of lies. It reminds me of the ghost goal thing, in which nobody seemed ready to point out to him that if it wasn't a goal it'd have been a penalty and Cech would have been dismissed. Except he's even more in full self delusion mode at Real, and the stuff he says about Barca is truly wild and insane.

I think he prob should just move on if he can't lose with a bit more grace.

LocalGarda, Friday, 19 August 2011 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

isn't this stuff just an effort to make the press focus on him after a tough loss, rather than on the players?

think the telling difference here to what he used to do is that his players are acting just as badly on the pitch, like normally you would have said the aggressive intensity was in aid of a focused tactical rigour but not so here

"Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has a tongue-in-cheek swipe at their fixture list as he concludes his programme notes with: "Let's play and enjoy this big game. Then on Monday we play at The Emirates. Sorry it's not Monday. It is Tuesday. I forgot they gave us 24 hours to recover and prepare for another big game."

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago)

psychologizing always very easy with a player as infantile and demonstrative as ronaldo, even so....

within about three minutes he gets shut out by caceres and leaves his foot in, caceres returns with interest a few moments afterwards

then real madrid get a fk on the right in bale's range which ronaldo arrogates before hitting into the wall and then sending the rebound into the bleachers rather than laying it off or controlling it

it's not even that bale is a serious threat to his pre-eminence yet but he's getting envious already

There had been suggestions that Mourinho could move for the Colombia striker Jackson Martínez, currently at Porto, but the manager said he was happy with his forward options Fernando Torres, Eto'o and Demba Ba.
Mourinho added: "It's not true what I read a couple of days ago, that the agent was in London and was meeting with me or Chelsea directors. It's not true at all.
"In the January market we are not going to buy any striker. We will go to the end of the season with Fernando, with Samuel and with Demba. Nobody to go in, nobody to go out."

You have been having your say on how much Real Madrid will miss Cristiano Ronaldo on the BBC Sport Facebook page:

Joseph Emorut: Ronaldo is the world best player. Yes Madrid are gonna miss him so much.

Crippy Cooke: Not that big at all. Madrid have quality over the park, and Gareth Bale is scoring for fun at present.

Gordon Davie: Ronaldo the best in the world right now yes they will miss him.

Mourinho signed a four-year contract worth around £10m a season, considerably less than he was earning at Real Madrid, to oversee a Chelsea team in transition. "Realistically I hope at the end of those four years we sit, analyse the situation and that will be the point where we both – club and me – are happy to carry on or happy to separate," he said. "But I would like [to stay for], say, 12 years. I'm 51 next month. I'd say 12 years, and then two to go to a World Cup with a national team. I would prefer the Portuguese national team. England second [choice], yes.

"You know, they like to cry," Mourinho said. "That's tradition. But I prefer to say, and I was telling it to the fourth official, that English people – Frank Lampard, for example – would never provoke a situation like that.

"Players from other countries, especially some countries, have that in their blood. So, if there is contact or an opponent is aggressive, they don't keep going. But this is English football. Foreign players are bringing lots of good things. They come here because they are talented. But I prefer English blood in football. English blood in this situation is: 'Come on, let's go.' Mikel's tackle is hard and aggressive but football is for men or for women with fantastic attitude. It's true."

after last night he was talking about formation and contextually it sounded more like the latinate sense of training/drilling/smoothing of rough edges and submission to the author's plan than just the numerical formation

so quite possibly his favourite team right now in an easier game would be the same players but in a different formation, ramires brought into a flat three in midfield and willian wide

he's got another of those sort of crushing two deep cbs & two deep cms that capello favoured in his double pivot or that dunga favoured, like the inverse of the 'magic quadrilateral' as ronaldinho, kaka, adriano and ronaldo were hopefully described in 2006

matic, zouma, a fast reserve winger bought and two intricate but not especially dynamic attacking midfielders sold and more noise about diego costa in the summer, he couldn't play this sort of football at any other major european club and be more highly thought of by fans and hacks

To be a friend with a football manager, a 'friend' friend, it has to be with people with whom you share something. With an assistant manager of mine, or if I was their assistant. Louis van Gaal [with whom Mourinho worked at Barcelona] is my friend because I worked for him for so long. Other managers you know them, you shake hands, two minutes … My enemy? No one. Not a single one."

nakhchivan, Saturday, 22 March 2014 01:32 (eleven years ago)

Van Gaal on Mourinho

He was very modest back then when we worked together. It has been nice to see how he has developed as a coach and he has ended up being this personality that he is. He soon knew that I understood football. I think I educated him a bit. Now he plays just to win. I aim to play well also and entertain the public so my path is the more difficult one but I respect him.

got to give him some respect for continually fucking over the best teams in the epl with his execrable worthless football

even so.....and this isn't directed just at him but the whole chelsea shower....tomas kalas is extremely highly rated, he cost over £5m as a 17 year old playing in the czech republic, and yet mourinho hasn't played him in a single league game this season

combination of the cynicism in hoarding the best u-20 players in the world, piazon kakuta etc and just letting them rot in the reserves or shuffle them between their biddable franchise teams in holland or whatever....then hiring a manager who won't even take the slightest risks in giving game time to any of them

like how hard would it have been to risk kalas at home to cardiff or whoever? they have another extremely highly rated cb in the reserves, 18 yr old called christiansen who has never got near the first team but is supposedly being paid twenty grand a week

which explains why these kids move to chelsea, it almost set them up for life on their first contract and they will worry about the problem of actually getting near the first team on another day

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Sunday, 27 April 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

that youth situation is down to the roman/jose awkward marriage really isnt it, barca cantera style vanity daydreams vs the harshest here and now pragmatism, a philosophical contest consecrated in the poisoned unholy european cup win, or even maybe just in oscar the sylphlike #10 dog of war

abramovich seems notably absent these days... jose's recent suggestion he would have to ask permission to play a weakened side today quite obv a bullying victor's rhetorical turning of the screw

possibly abramovich was sold on a compromise ticket until the (jose-engineered) mata situation made him bend over, fund matic, and leave the conversation

though it is an article of faith that ronaldo has transformed over the years, the usual narrative of scrawny fannydangler to hench psychopath, that video makes it seem even more pronounced, because he wasn't a kid but already a ballon d'or winner

that was his last season at 'manchester' as he refers to it, two seasons after his major breakthrough as a goalscoring winger and one after his 31 goal/european cup ballon d'or season

to some extent ferguson clipped his wings during the next season, once they both knew he would be off in the summer, because he tended to play in a more fixed formation after the arrival of berbatov

the previous 4-6-0 type of formation which was likened to spalletti's roma of totti/taddei/mancini andwhere tevez ronaldo and twp swapped positions constantly was ditched and it was a little more orthodox and rectilinear

there he is playing quite far wide and hitting a lot of crosses (how ferguson loved rapid switches of play between the flanks) but his basic technique is so different from today to be almost unrecogniseable, so many flicks and backheels and feints and his shooting technique seems slightly pedantic, trying to shoot quickly with no backlift to deceive cech rather than just trusting his own instincts

a lot of 1v1s, plenty against ashley cole who dealt with him better in his winger days than any other fullback, and a lot of stuttering motions where he tried to con the defender from a standing start like ronaldinho, but ronaldo never quite had his instincts and his technique was merely exceptional rather than supernatural

Chetniks in Šumadija kill a Partisan through heart extraction.jpg (nakhchivan), Monday, 3 November 2014 02:31 (ten years ago)

he is a smaller & more modest man in that video, he crosses and passes more, he gets rid of the ball & services the strikers, he is not quite CR7
