Bidone d'Oro, Italian for the "Golden Bin" or "Golden Trashcan", is a tongue-in-cheek prize given to the worst footballer in Serie A each year. A play on Ballon d'Or, the European Footballer of the Year award[1], the winner is chosen through votes by listeners of the Catersport show on Rai Radio 2.[2] The prize was first awarded in 2003 to Rivaldo of Milan.[3]

<3 adriano

legrottaglie kinda deserves this for being a preachy git

schlomo replay (acoleuthic), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

vieri is australian cricket's biggest loss and I cannot vote for him on that account

schlomo replay (acoleuthic), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

when you say "worst" do you mean worst player or least deserving? because i'm not sure melo deserved it in a year when milan bought the american fella to replace one of the greatest defenders of all time. and rivaldo was v. unlucky with his personal life iirc?

even with the ridiculous amount inter spent that year on fake ronaldo and mancini (should have been a joint award imo), really it has to be <3 adriano. that guys career is next level lols.

I always thought this was as much 'worst signing' as 'worst player'. because surely there are a lot worse dudes who got their teams relegated? but then i guess adriano disproves that.

Worst as in "worst player".

Thread could also be a good place to discuss the concept of "the worst footballer" and what quantifies as such. For instance, it'd be hard to argue that Lucas Leiva is a worse footballer than, say, random Wigan Athletic squad filler (Callum McManaman, for example), but in a pub discussion of "worst players in the Premier League" McM's name would never be brought up, while Leiva's would.

Inspector Anthony Slade, Monday, 13 December 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

There's a special category of really good 'worst footballers' that Lucas belongs in with the likes of Fletcher and Mikel - effective players in good enough teams to contrast with showponies, roughly.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 December 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

it is all to do with expectations. Quaresma was injury plagued at Barca but by the time Inter were sniffing around, he was £15m 'next cronaldo'. Wigan players are expected to disappoint so it is not a surprise when they do whereas Lucas was treated as the next Gilberto. Not fulfilling the hype is much memorable to meeting low expectations.

Fletcher and Mikel are essential players in successful teams. You can see parallels in Liverpool's decline with the more Lucas played. (I don't think he is bad enough to be in a 'worst player' convo.)

if his form doesn't pick-up rooney would be a good bidone d'oro for the epl this season.

think i'm going to go for adriano. a player who was great until, admittedly pretty harsh, irl shit fucked him up and he just got drunk and fat and useless.

Other types of "bad footballer"? "Relative of better player" is a perennial, surely? Paul Dalglish, Darren Strachan, Maradonna's brother...

Jordi made Alaves into a good team. Ok he wasn't top 3 players ever like his daddy but he had a p decent career imo.

Another type: 'players unfortunate enough that their biggest howler coincides with their most visible moment'? Massimo Taibi, Ronnie Rosenthal, probably David Ginola in France

Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 December 2010 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

No doubt there are people on the planet who consider Roberto Baggio the worst player ever.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 December 2010 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

dudes who had 10 large on Italy to win the '94 World Cup for a start

la dame aux chlamydias (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

baggio had a funny old world cup in that at the beginning he was vilified by the italian press, then was the best player in the italy team by far, then lost them the final with one of the worst penalties ever taken by someone who wasn't english.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

two in the round of 16 to beat Nigeria (scoring with 2 minutes left of the game sending it into extra time, and then another goal in extra time), one in the quarter-finals to top Spain (the game winner with 3 minutes remaining) and two to beat Bulgaria in the semi-finals

all that plus getting the hook against Norway after 20 mins when Pagliuca was sent off

Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 December 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

if ANYONE thinks Baggio was less than a hero then they suck and should be killed.
