Looking at this list with the positions surrounding them removed everyone bar perhaps Ashley Cole looks too high in the top 31 to me!

howie was a rock, buddy couldn't handle it (pandemic), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

joe hart or dirk kuyt's inclusion. Gerrard at 20

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

too low: muller, ibby, pastore, vdv, lucio, higuain, cambiasso

too high: bale, rooney, terry, torres, any of the france team

lol how did they make it: gerrard, adebayor, arshavin, diego

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

for year 2010 no way is bale too high

voted rooney at 12 stfu & gtfo

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:24 (fourteen years ago)

Rooney at 12 is silly but Gerrard on the list at all is absolute insanity, a black hole of senselessness that threatens to flatten logic thru-out the universe.

think i'd pick lucas ahead of gerrard. or the whole everton team.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

Who played the least games out of the 100? Was it RvP, by any chance?

His 15 club games and eight international appearances got him to 60th best footballer in the world.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

Also four goals.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

he also got the most assists at the world cup, taking his team to the final.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

If we were going on last season's form then I'd say Rooney at 12 would be alright. No way now though.

Nothing beats Gerrard at 20 though, that's just pure mentalism. Lassana Diarra being in there at all is also kind of lol.

Too low: Muller, Zlatan, Alonso, maybe Dzeko and Cassano.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

arshavin is a very good player and certainly deserves to be somewhere there

malouda too high, robinho too low

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

Malouda has been fantastic for most of 2010, recent Chelsea wobble notwithstanding. Was quite hard done by in the World Cup as well.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

he isn't ~that~ good

robinho is nother lev, but now is treated as a joke in england cuz he scored a load of goals then decided he didn't want to be there

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

Happens at every club he goes to though.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think anyone treats Robinho as a joke, but he's pretty much yer archetypal "supreme talent, questionable mentality" footballer.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

was second best player at madrid but wanted to leave cuz they publically said he'd be sold if they got ronaldo, and they didn't get him in 2008 so tried to u-turn

i'd say he was mentally (and physically) a bit weak but he's not in the cassano, gascoigne level and has generally performed at least credibly apart from when he was trying to leave city

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

oh by the way a hoy, u didn't include pato at 71 which is the most absurd low placing in the 2k10 list

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think there's at least a vague argument to be made for Gerrard on some "talisman" ish, plus he probably is one of the few players who if you did erase them from history the past five years of their club would look totally different.

Arshavin, on the other hand, is a luxury player in a team that really doesn't need one.

Inspector Anthony Slade, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

erase them from history = sell them to chelsea for £40m and buy some players who don't make transformers noises as they run randomly around the playground at 100mph

i like how every time gerrard misplaces a pass it's 'a rare mistake' when he's provided a+ assists for zidane, henry and drogba in the past

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Think Arsh on average does more than he gets credit for but less than he shd. Dunno where that leaves him on this poll.

If by talismanic you mean "sums up the attitude and performance of his team" then no doubt this still held true of Gerrard in the 2K10. Do know where that leaves him on this poll.

Shanty! Shanti! Shanté! (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno, i thought 71 for pato was about right - injury problems all year that also kept him out of the world cup, still not at his full ability in a way you know he will just move up like 15 places a season until he is top 5 by the time he goes to real.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

i don't get nakh's post. when was gerrard playing with zidane, henry and drogba?

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

I believe the "assists" alluded to may have been unintentional, M'Lud.

Shanty! Shanti! Shanté! (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

except maybe for the drogba one

max bro'd (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

'16. Torres' also ridiculous if this is really a 2010 thing. Inclined to cut Rooney slack for an amazing three months. Really, though, it's '74. Thomas Muller'.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

'100. Ronaldo' made me laugh btw, 'til I realised what had happened - then I laughed even more.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

i know this thread doesn't have the full list but who is the most obvious person missing? When did Valencia die? Juan? Dembele? Zamora? Bastos? Hazard? Marin? (Nasri?, ben Arfa?) Niang? Kolo? Kompany? dan mentioned Donavon which seems otm?

Valbeuna, Bastos, Donovan, that cracking Valencia player whose name I can't remember right now, anyone who plays in the Americas, some Koreans maybe

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

mata? neymar and paulo henrique (called 'the next zidane' on an article on the bbc that is like 'shouldn't hype the dude too much guyz')?

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

tino costa?

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

Yup, mata - excellent player. Atlético have some tidy lads as well iirc. Probably the odd Portuguese. Hulk.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

anyway, agree with ibra and gerrard being the stand outs here.

last years list even more confusing though. santon??

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

santon had an awesome season. people were calling him the next maldini and everyone kinda believed it.

Let us not forget that Benitez's method of treating The New Maldini (TM) during his Inter reign was to ignore him for seven gameweeks, then play him as a roving winger instead.

Inspector Anthony Slade, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

have heard he's a bit of a playa and could do with concentrating a lil harder but reckon he'll turn out ok

often happens to players who make a sudden breakthrough and become complacent, like congrats you are the starting left back for inter, now do the same thing for 15 years

The Onion on some reasons why LD wasn't on this list:

Landon Donovan - A Disgrace To The Soccer-Loving Country Of America
Professional Soccer Player

December 14, 2010 | ISSUE 46•50

In a year when so much went wrong for America, one would be hard-pressed to find a more tragic event than the beloved U.S. national team's elimination from the 2010 World Cup. The humiliating loss—which left millions of enraged citizens rioting in every major city—was universally blamed on disgraced team captain Landon Donovan.

After the U.S. team won its group in the first round, an estimated 300 million Americans, widely known as the most fanatical soccer fans on the planet, shuttered local businesses, declared a holiday from school, and even closed down the New York Stock Exchange to watch the second-round match against Ghana, only to see their collective hopes dashed by Donovan's subpar play. Mass burnings of Landon Donovan effigies and widespread looting ensued, forcing President Barack Obama to declare a state of national emergency.

Despite receiving thousands of death threats and a personal warning from the State Department urging him to stay off American soil until order could be restored, Donovan returned to Los Angeles and was shot 172 times in the chest, head, and feet by an unknown number of assailants—a crime that remains unsolved to this day as police refuse to investigate.

Donovan's decomposing corpse still hangs from the marquee at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, where hundreds of passersby spit on it each day.

dan m, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure Beckham and Big Sol have been burned in effigy, any others?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

figo presumably. maybe baggio in july 1994

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

could make for a pretty tasty XI if we can keep it going. Nobody would bother making an effigy of Jeff Kenna

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

Rooney upfront

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Are the Irish big on burning effigies? You can probably pair him up with Henry.
