they'll prob pick up adrian chiles for a fiver

They seem more like replacements for Keys who hasn't gone anywhere. For tactical analysis and lead punditry I'd have none of them. I think Souness might be the best of a bad bunch. Will finally come good with my threat to watch with the sound off if I have to listen to Chris Kamara for 90 minutes during every big game.

oh i was actually thinking abt this as replacement for keys when i made my post abt them seeming ridiculous

As co-commentator rather than pundit? Wilkins could be alright. Worst case scenario - Souness or Allardyce. Will probably end up being Smith or Kamara though.

Would love Gary Birtles. There's something quite charming about his buffoonery and occasionally surreal analysis. (escalating outrage at minor incidents, getting in a tangle over a penalty incident where he inadvertently convinced himself of the opposite view to that which he had been vehemently espousing, a memorable occasion when he started going on about premiership footballers being out of touch, going round in massive cars, being in the box at Wimbledon, rather than sitting in the crowd, pushing in the queue at the NHS).

But most pleasing of all, and what sets him apart from Andy Gray, he never goes on about what a player should have done. Well not much anyway.

That list? Would agree Souness the best of a bad bunch. Any likelihood of them getting Gerry Armstrong over from Spanish football? (If they get him to stop saying 'for me'?). A move for Pleaty maybe? (Also unlikely I realise). Wonder if they'll want to soften their approach after the furore as well, so suspect Alan Smith might be an initial shoo-in.

Ladbrokes' shortlist is even worse. Andy Townsend, ffs!

Best possible available line-up: Rafa, Big Sam, Redknapp's crotch and a black homosexual muslim lady.

Glenn Hoddle manages a football club so I don't see that happening.

Would they get a straight replacement, or have an analysis bloke (or woman) separate from the co-commentary role?

I'd love it if they had Roy Hodgson as analyst bloke, he knows his stuff.

ailsa, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

oooh i forgot hodgson is jobless

Wilkins used to do the co commentating on CH4 when they had the Italian football didn't he? He was quite good, as was Don Howe iirc

Liverpool fans would disagree.
