In tribute to Big Chris Samba's goal against Wigan yesterday, where he basically scored because he was bigger than everyone else - which is your favourite pair of big ugly lugs in The Best League In The World TM?

(I'm doing this on the basis of who I think the first-choice pairing is. So some of these may be... wrong. Really, really wrong, actually. Trying to figure out Wigan's is brain-boggling)

It's such an important position but I don't trust very many of those pairings tbh - Chelsea and Utd, probably City, then the best of the rest are just getting by really. There's weakness everywhere. No wonder you get goalfests like yesterday.

Best, as well as probably my favourite, is Ferdinand/Vidic.

Koscielny would be picked ahead of Djourou; Alex ahead of Ivanovic; Dunne is no longer considered a part of Villa's first XI etc. etc.

Yeah, the more I look at it the more glaring the mistakes seem (leaving Carragher out of the Liverpool pairing feels particularly howling), but basically it's Samba and Nelsen all the way for me. There's stories all through the list - it feels like at least one member of each pairing has been written off or under-rated at some point during their career, for instance - but it feels like Blackburn over the past few seasons have basically been built around these two. At £450,000 the pair, there really can't have been many bigger bargains in the top flight in the past... decade, maybe?

The very idea of Spurs having a "first-choice centreback pairing" is lol but it should probably be Woodgate-King, although that's such a fantasy we might as well throw in a hobbit at right-back.
